Thanks for bringing your addled butt in to teach and play this Alan.

It's a strange one, where there are deep, brain-burning things to think about--punctuated by wild and crazy Events. Wha?! Not sure what I think yet.

For a fairly thinky and AP-prone game, the random elements seemed really out of place, especially how extreme they can potentially be. (I don't think any of them were insane in our game, but they definitely could've been.) Has some interesting ideas, but overall I'm not especially impressed. (In other words, it's not too bad and I'd play again if someone wanted to, but I wouldn't seek it out.)

This is the first time I've played this game where I felt like it really "worked." When you have players that are aggressive with pricing plots without being ridiculous, the end result is a very interesting and tense game. One thing I think this game has working against it is that you really have to play it many times to be able to develop strategies that work. Lots of games are like that, but this one takes a long time to play and until you "get it," it's not quite as fun. When you're looking for a mid-heavy 2-4 player euro, you have a lot of choices. For me this is a good game that I might choose sometimes if I am with 2-3 other players who at least have experience with games having a "set your price" mechanic, but it's not a sure thing I'll pull out every time.

edit: oh yeah, this game should have come with components to help you keep track of who owns what parcels, so that you don't have to be continuously looking around. This would be an excellent PBEM game as you could just overlay all the boards.

Played two games of Donald and Kenny versus Jason and I. I'm starting to wonder if I'll ever get to play any other big games again. When I've arived lately this is the one thing that seems to be starting. Oh well..it's a good game.

D&K won the first game, was a slow start then they took off..but we came back a bit near the end. J&I won a kinda quick second game as we ran away with it.

Heh...Kenny usually can't make it these days since he has a leadership thing at our church most Tuesdays, so I'm not surprised he and Donald took the opportunity for a few games of Tichu :-)

The main problem with this game is that it can get really convoluted (and thus, very AP prone - not just for me), and it's a light enough 'screw-your-neighbor' sort of game that this is rather out of place. Didn't see how this specific game went, though.

Yeah, not my type of game. There's not enough "there" there - no real content to make it worthwhile.

I don't usually toot my own horn, but dangit, I played this really well last night.

I have never had so many hands with so many high cards. I thought I was going to get wrecked...but I pulled them all off.

I don't usually point when I played badly, but dangit, I sucked this up ridiculously last night. =)

Yeah, I dunno. I wasn't paying proper attention and was mostly playing awfully, and a few poor hands multiplied the issue! For some reason this seems even harder than, say, Khronos for me to figure out how to play properly, arg.

Very interesting game; more complicated than you might think. The Japanese held on pretty well, but the Yanks pulled off the win in the last turn.

Kenny and I played 2 games well we were waiting for others. He beat me the first one, and then pretty much let me take the rest of the points I needed on the second so we could go play something else. Still..always a fun game. Thanks again for bringing your board and letting us use it Dan.

"That Bidding Game"

Dan - turns out they weren't just being awkward, they actually did not know the name of this game at all. Introduced by Shane L. I think, and pretty much universally hated ;O

Can anyone comment on the rules? Even knowing whether it was exact bidding or not, and whether or not there was declarative trump would go a long way toward narrowing down the name of the game (unless Shane just made it up.)

I don't think anyone that actually played in that game posts here regularly. Best bet is to ask someone next week (Jason, Luke, or Shane L.) Possible that Shane or someone he knew made it up, dunno.

If I could remember much of the game, I'd comment on the rules.

Things being as they are however, I must admit that while I appeared in all aspects to be playing the game, in fact I was in Hawaii at the time, on a warm and sandy beach, doing fun things to Elisha Cuthbert.

Each trick is worth a point, ten tricks in total. You only get one chance to bid. Someone is your partner based on something you name. (Can't remember, blame Elisha)

I hated it.

"WTF"

Luke casually mentioned that this was a game he thought Dan should try, and ended up convincing Shane S., Jason, and myself to play last night.

Not a bad little trick taking game. Basically each hand starts with everyone bidding how many points they think they can get (one at a time), or passing (and placing a card face down on the table). Winning the bid (other 3 players pass; whatever you bid stands) gives you several advantages, but also incurs the most risk.

Whoever wins the bid can declare the trump suit, gets the 3 facedown cards and then discards 4 from his hand + those cards, and names a specific card to be a super-trump. Whoever has this specific card will be his partner for the round, but is not announced; it will only be revealed once the card is played.

Decent overall; not amazing, but worth some plays, and goes fairly quickly.

This was an interesting trick game. Kinda fun with the hidden element of who your partner is. But I think only once did the person that won the bid actually made it. Think Jared never won a bid but ended with the most points when we stoped. And I came in second and only ever won the first bid, which I lost 10 points not making it. I would try it again though.

Yeah, that's what Luke called it. I would guess that it is a variant of some other more well-known trick-taking game, though it's not that similar to any I know. I checked Pagat too, and tried Googling some of the specific rules/point values and such and didn't come up with any site anywhere that talks about it :P

Luke said he's probably be coming next week, so if you stop being so disease-laden you could stop by and give it a try...

And I should've remembered, because Luke had me down to 1 die when he still had 4 and I ended up pulling off the win!
