I like movies, but honestly, I don't usually seek out scary movies that much. I'm especially not a fan of slasher flicks, I'm more into the psychological terror, or thrillers.

This October, I'm interested in seeing some good ones, So educate me! Tell me what scary movie you still can't sit all the way through. What shows destroyed your innocence!

My experience has been limited, show me what I should check out this horror season!

I'll start out with a few, and my general impressions. I know not everyone has the same movie tastes, so I welcome any perspectives. Show me why I should love the movies I haven't seen!

I'm off to play some games, but I'll be back to add more, and see what has been added!

THE CHANGELING

I had never heard of this movie when it was shown to me. Holy Freaking Terror. I don't know if this is the scariest of all time, but it is up there.

It's all in the setup. There's a scene with a wheelchair that taken by itself is cliche, maybe a little cheesy, but with all the setup through the movie, it was about the most terrifying thing I've seen.

The Exorcist

The Exorcist didn't turn out to be my style of movie either. It was all shock value. Although the girl going backwards down the stairs was pretty cool.

Since this is generally hailed by many as one of the top scary movies, does this mean I'm not qualified to talk about horror if I didn't care for it?

TREMORS

This movie isn't that scary. Unless you are sitting alone late at night, and you are under age.

This is the first movie I couldn't finish because I was too scared. Now it's more of an adventure story for me than a horror, but still a classic for me.

Watched this one last year as a recommendation from my sister-in-law. Wasn't nearly as scary as she made out. Maybe just because I'm not the target audience?

Word has it the new one with Nicholas Cage was nominated by the Razzies for the best Comedy award.

Audition

There is some gore but only in like 10% of the movie. Without spoiling anything, it's about a man who tries to find a new wife under the guise of a casting audition for a tv show. The woman he ends up picking seems great but....

Even though it is Japanese, the movie and director are well-known enough that you could find it in many American stores.

Nosferatu, A Symphony of Horror

If you like classics, this is pretty much the defining film of early horror for me. No gore. All scares are purely based on visuals, implications, and most importantly the perfect casting and performance of Max Schrek.

This one offered so much. There's the depth of space. The sense of quiet and vastness and awe and then closeness and "OMG WTH is that?! Get it off my face!!"

That one blurb was repeated a few times, but it never got old. It was always done different each time. It's all so much better in the Director's Cut.

My first pick was taken, but even though Aliens is more of a "bug hunt", it still has enough boo moments in it to make it scary.

Also the single most quotable movie for great action lines.

The Haunting is the scariest movie I've ever seen. This is the 1960s one, with Julie Harris, Tab Hunter, and Lois Maxwell. It's the typical cliched story of people staying over in a haunted house to see if it's really haunted, yeah, but this film is thick with creepy, eerie atmosphere, so much so tht it is the paragon that defines the cliche. There are at least two scenes that are so scary that, despite having seen the movie six or seven times, I have no idea how they actually resolve, they're just so incredibly tense. It's certainly the movie I'll be watching on Halloween.

The magic that is Hitchcock is that the horror is almost entirely psychological. The Birds in the film attack for no reason, in a town that could be anywhere.

Watching this film does for crow caws what Psycho (another must-see) did for showers.

I am going to have to go with the original Halloween. Great music. Great story. Great killer. The tension keeps building throughout. This is one of the last hollywood movies that was actually scary. Not bloody, not gory, but scary. The remake by Rob Zombie totally ruined the whole thing by having you feel sorry for Michael. When will people learn to leave good things alone?

Or the remake: The Ring

Personally, I thought the remake was scarier. Others think the original is scarier. Either way, both are good.

Ju-On:The Grudge 2

There is some semi-confusing title translation, since this movie is technically the 4th movie in the Ju-On series, so if you are interested check out the dvd cover pic on wikipedia.

Regardless, creepy children crawling towards the camera generally scares lots of people. This particular movie in the series is my favorite because one particular scene stood out majorly(If you've seen, the knocking on the wall part). I barely remember the story and probably for good reason, but it is still high on creep factor.

I haven't seen the American versions so I can't comment on those.

Hello, I am a 30 year old male, and I couldn't make it through Fatal Frame alone.

Not a movie, but for anyone who likes scary stuff and has a PS2 or Xbox I highly recommend checking out Fatal Frame or a sequel. I've only played the original so I can't comment on which is the best.

I haven't really been scared at a movie since I was a kid(Poltergeist, eek!) but this game got me good! The thing about movies is they become predictable. If you've seen enough you can usually tell when a sdcare is coming and even which will be false-scares(OMG the killer is here, WAAAH, oh it's just my boyfriend who is dying next!). For a game, not only are you more immersed, but because the game doesn't have a strict 90 minute script, it becomes way less predictable. The game can toy with you by not throwing a scare when you swear it's going to and really getting you by genuine surprise.

There is a sequel in the works for Wii.

I'm going with Dario Argento's Suspiria.
Superbly directed set pieces and the most hideously brilliant soundtrack from Goblin. In fact, it was the soundtrack that I found the most frightening thing about this movie. I remember sitting and watching this one and gnawing at my fingers because the music was so freaky. Banging, shouting, screaming, whispering, melodious and haunting. Now, thinking about it, Deep Red and Tenebrae (also Argento/Goblin collaborations) would also squeeze quite nicely onto this entry.

SALEMS LOT

This scared me witless when I watched this aged around 12-13. It was aired sometime later when I was around 17-18 and I had to flip the channel over to something/anything easier on the nerves, as certain scenes still utterly terrified me.

I can watch it now, but a little bit of the fear still remains. Reggie Nalder as Barlow makes an absolutely terrifying lead vampire. He still occasionally crops up in my nightmares.

The script is top-notch and although not as close to the book as the dreadful 2004 remake, it is a far superior, chilling, memorable film.
