Like the last couple of years, I am putting together a list of games, released at (or at least around) Essen, that I think sound interesting, based on descriptions, pictures, the theme alone, etc.

I generally prefer heavier euro boardgames with a historical theme, so very light games, card games, pure abstracts, and plastic bit/big box fantasy games will probably be quite underrepresented here. I do like wargames, though - traditional, old-fashioned wargames that is; with cardboard counters or at the very least wooden blocks - so if any of those will be presented at Essen, you might find them on this list too.

Have you played any of the following games, been involved in development and/or playtesting, or are you just dying to voice your opinion, please leave a comment. And if you think I am missing a potential gem, feel free to add it.

For much more complete lists of games (used as the input for this list), see the excellent Essen 2008 Canonical List here on BGG, as well as Spielbox's great Essen game list.

Certainly in the have-a-closer-look-before-deciding category, this Kramer/Kiesling mining game still looks pretty cool. Yellow "track" tiles on a hex board makes the game look vaguely 18xx'sque.

I am a sucker for anything that has to do with the Ancient Near East, and After the Flood looks fun. It also seems to be fairly complex for a Warfrog game - in the same league as Brass, I would guess.

I had a chance to play this and my initial impression was favorable. It's kind of an odd, area majority type of game, with a little more conflict than most due to some back-door ways of taking objectives. Aspects of it remind me of Shadow of the Emperor and Stuggle of Empires. If you are the perceived leader, you put a big target on yourself.

Nobody seems to know much about the game yet, but a deduction game set around the Umberto Eco novel sounds, well, potentially great. But how involved will the game be? How about German text on the components?

I edited the English rules, so you know they're spectacular.

My understanding is that the game's nearly 100% language independent save the Event Tiles, which I believe are printed double-sided (German on one side and English on the other).

I can't say tons because I don't have permission to do so, but basically you're trying to maneuver monks about the board. One of them is 'your' identity and you're trying to keep that monk as non-suspicious as possible. The rest you have no problem moving to places where they'll look odd. Of course, you have to do this carefully lest it become too obvious who you are. There is of course a fair bit more to the game than that, but that's the general gist.

From the rules, it looks like a good 'un.

Tribune is one of my favorite games from last year, so an expansion is almost a must-buy. Not necessarily at the messe, though, but I do look forward to seeing what the expansion contains.

Fragor Games, stand 9-19

I haven't bought any of Fragor's previous games (cute components alone just don't do it for me), but Snow Tails looks very interesting. Dog sleds racing? Yeah! Preordered.

Ystari Games, stand 9-38

With the exception of Mykerinos, I have felt mostly so-so about Ystari's games so far. Still, they always sound interesting and Sylla, with the implicit promise of somehow fulfilling the dream of eurogame-meets-Republic-of-Rome-light, certainly sounds like just my kind of game. Oh, and you get cool blingy coin thingies if you preorder? Consider it done. :-)

Yeah, that would be great.
Unfortunately I don't think Sylla will be the one.
Good game, but not RoR-lite.

So.. keep on dreaming

The latest game from designer Mac Gerdts, this time with an Incan theme. Reports so far make it sound great, so it will definitely get a closer look.

The recent controversy with everything Winsome-related aside, seeing what Queen Games will make of Wabash Cannonball certainly intrigues me. A possible buy?

They did a beautiful job with Thebes and there's only one way to go regarding the art on this game and that's up. I'm looking forward to seeing what Queen does with this.

The title "Wabash Cannonball" may have a strong connotation for Americans, but in Europe it means very little. Since Queen is producing the game for the European/German market, choosing a title that helps potential buyers realize that they are looking at a train game makes good sense.

Haha, no, it doesn't have any connotation for the vast majority of Americans either, including myself. I just think it sounds much more unique, and it caught my attention enough that I did some research on the game.

Wait a minute, are they not producing it for the American market? I've been hoping this would be available at some point...

To be honest, I don't know if Queen will make CE an international-including-English edition, like they do with some of their games. Could be...

I know I'm a big whiny baby but "Chicago Express" is the generic and acceptable type of name that one would expect from a mainstream company. But I'd prefer a little more personality. In other words, I don't want "Chicago Express" I want "Wabash Cannonball!"

You have to understand that in the European market, few people know where Wabash is let alone Aurora, Joliet. Products have to use a "Big City" name as their catch, preferable one with a storied history. So Chicago it is.

I'm sure Queen will do a fantastic job, but unless the game looses its bizarre stock mechanism I'll give this one a pass.

It will be interesting to see if it costs less than the Winsome version - but given today's dollar I doubt it will.

edit: wrote this, and then read Jen's comment :/

Interesting list.

Personal points of curiosity from your selection: After the Flood, Diamonds Club, Dominion, Veritas, Le Havre, not forgetting the Tribune expansion & Sylla (yes, Rome version euro certainly has its enthusiasts).

I noted your expressing a general preference for what you describe as "heavier euro board games with a historical theme". That's the most fitting categorization of my own taste (& I suspect, of a distinct number of other gamers) that I've seen so far.

I hope Essen lives up to expectations! meeple
