I first started putting together this list in Summer 2008 because I thought much of the criticism about wargames on BGG was somewhat unfair. Having been here since 2004, I know all about the rush to the great next goodie, the slick way some games are promoted, and the way opinion is formed. For a BGG ranking, you need 30 votes. Many wargames - especially those with a limited audience - have less than 100. In fact, most on this list are in this situation, so a few snide remarks on a geeklist and some tag-alongs can kill it off.

Massive errata is one of the primary faults these games tend to have. Another is crappy components - including bland counters and bad maps. Rulebooks that are unintelligible also prevail. Balance issues abound. Not every one of these games has all these problems. Some have none of these problems, but aside from misplaced scorn, many of these games often earned their way here by having real problems.

Are these really the worst games on the block though? Well, actually these are still the elite in a way. BGG has at this time (Sept 2009) 421 pages (each page having 100 entries in my preferences, so about 42100 games) of games and the lowest ranked with a geek rating is Tic-Tac-Toe. You can find it like this, right now in the list:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/browse/boardgame/page/358?sort=...

This means however that there are 357 pages of games with no geek rating because they don't even have 30 user ratings. This allows Nero & Tactics II to snub their noses at the vast majority of games on BGG. At least 30 people felt enough passion (one way or another) to say something about them.

This search:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/browse/boardgame?sort=bggrating...

gives a more discerning result. From this result we see 71 pages (about 7100) wargames. Of these results, we only start to see games with geek rating's around page 55. This means about 5400-5500 wargames don't have enough user ratings to warrant inclusion in our list. So, I guess it could be worse even for Kriegspiel and Nero.

When I finally saw the games in the list, I wasn't at all surprised to find quite a few I enjoyed. I think maybe some of you will as well. For the games I've played or even watched played, I'll comment about what I liked and didn't like. I invite you to do the same.

Maybe you will even find a new game that you will enjoy!!!

Note: I have 105 entries on the list because some games have graduated (because they have been voted higher - yet their infamy lives on here). In fact, the top 5-10 games often move back and forth in ratings. I plan to buffer this to 110 games soon. Jim Dunnigan's American Civil War and Global War will then enter the list.

Not the SPI version, but TSR's enormously ambitious take on the Napoleonic Wars. There are numerous errata on the grognard site including suggestions from Chris Perleberg ("The Corsican Ogre Rides Again") in Wargamer #18, Jan-Feb 1990).

It's an S&T magazine game with fully functional counters and a decidedly ugly map. Aside from that the problem was mostly errata and there was plenty. See S&T 65 (also available on grognard.com for text of the errata).

Naturally, the one time we played, we didn't have the errata. I think this happens a lot with games like this. People give them a chance (maybe just one chance) and then move on. I've always regretted moving on in this case.

Unowned and played.

I really can't say enough good things about this game. If you compare this to "Back to Iraq" or "Oil War", this one is better by a landslide. The rulebook is pretty solid, the components are about standard, and the game itself is good. It has lots of scenarios and a pre-game that sets the situation for the war up (including available forces, which depend on the allies available).

This looks like fun. It has cute graphics and is themed to revolution. It's described as Junta for 2, which seems to make it look a bit paler to me (imho, a big part of the fun of Junta is all the backstabbing with many players).

This is a game that is themed to the Napoleonic War campaigns. It supports 2-4 gamers and uses a square grid. The components look first-rate for the period (cerca 1970) and the game seems like a nice light game for introductory play. It does involve randomization in the movement roll and there is a helpful suggestion to circumvent this by Josh Cork:

By Marc Miller who has designed about 30 games.

2001 by Avalanche Press

Highly anticipated, but the results were not satisfying to those who waited. This is the remake of the very good game Imperium, published in the 80s by GDW. This remake is by Avalanche Press and - like many others in the list - had rules issues upon release. These were corrected after publication but the damage had been done.

Some contend that Avalanche's fixes do not address all the issues and gamers have also made suggested fixes. Here is a link that addresses the rule shortcomings:

http://www.io.com/~hcobb/i3m/

The changes are extensive. About half are clarifications and half address game balance.

I've actually sat down to play this, but we never got started.

Quite a cool game of negotiation and diplomacy. It's not a very complicated game and it's definitely not a simulation, but that shouldn't matter too much. The components are substandard, including a map that is way too small for the full set of players. Players can suffer early elimination so you need to be careful how you budget your oil and not be too greedy, too timid, or too aggressive. Of course you need to be all those things to win.

Played and Owned.

This is a mass of information about tanks along with a really flimsy rule system that has been the subject of revision since it was published. Its value as a data repository was more than the price of the game, but it is frustrating to try as a game and feel like you are doing anything even remotely like armored warfare.

This is not the Battleship you think it is, though many (most?) of the ratings on the geek are for the popular beginner's game. This is a hex & counter game that makes a serious attempt to explain the role of the battleship in naval warfare.

I think there are a lot of games on this list that don't deserve a place in the bottom 50, but the only one I am CERTAIN that doesn't belong here is this one. This is here because it's called "Battleship" and people trounce it in the ratings.

This spacey terrain is supposed to really depict feudal Japan, the same setting as "A Most Dangerous Time", "Samurai & Katana", or "Feudal Lords".
