It is coming up to my 10th birthday and I am starting out in the online world. I registered here on BGG and my Dad suggested that I might create a geeklist with my current top 10 games.

I have over 5 years of boardgame experience. :p

and so here is my current top 10, listed in order from 1 to 10...
(not this crazy backwards stuff)

Top of the list.

Why?
I like the fact I am a bandit and I get to shoot at people. I enjoy finding out what role I play and what person I am.

(Dad: only played once, but the cowboy nature got him excited)

I really like this game, because when I play it with my friends we really get in to character. Towel round the neck, a little cigar in the mouth and a real "howdy mam" accent. And then "Bang" Fun guaranteed!!

By the way congratulations with your first list !!

Good taste, Ethan: Bang! is a great game, and I like it for the same reasons you do. Guessing roles is a fun idea for a game. If you like that part of Bang!, you might also like it in Citadels, or (if you want something simpler to play with a REALLY large group) Saboteur.

I love this for the same reasons. If you like finding out the roles you'll love this too Ethan: Werewolf. There are many different sets out there. Here's another: Werewolves of Miller's Hollow and they do take a lot of players, but if you can get them together it's a fun game.

Great list by the way. :D

Well then you're quite lucky. I've played my game probably 10 times or so, and every single time but one I was the traitor, and that one time was the only time I WASN'T the doctor or priest.

Pedant Alert

I'm guessing Dad might have attempted to tidy up the young one's grammar; however....

From the Guide to Grammar and Style by Jack Lynch:

"One tricky case comes up from time to time: is it "a historic occasion" or "an historic occasion"? Some speakers favor the latter — more British than American speakers, but you'll find them in both places — using an on longish words (three or more syllables) beginning with h, where the first syllable isn't accented. They'd say, for instance, "a hístory textbook" (accent on the first syllable) but "an históric event." (Likewise "a hábit" but "an habítual offender," "a hýpothetical question" but "an hypóthesis.") Still, most guides prefer a before any h that's sounded: "a historic occasion," "a hysterical joke," "a habitual offender" — but "an honor" and "an hour" because those h's aren't sounded." [Entry revised 21 April 2006; revised again 10 December 2006.]

Sorry, it's just one of my pet peeves. And I'm not accepting being Australian (or British) as an excuse. It just sounds silly, and that's coming from someone who prides himself in sounding silly and/or pretentious by using correct grammar.

In many regional accents in the United Kingdom, the leading 'h' in words is rarely, if ever, sounded. It's probably the same in Australia. It's just the way some of us speak.

P.S. Great list Ethan! Keep on gaming!

that's true indeed. I'm Northern Irish and I would say "eating jellied eels is a horrible idea" whereas an East Londoner might say, "eating eels fried in butter is an 'orrible idea". Both sound correct to me.

I'm in two minds on the (bad) grammar issue. I can see how very bad grammar can be awful to behold, and good grammar should be taught. On the other hand regional dialects are much more interesting than the 'proper' grammar I was taught at grammar school. In N.Ireland you might hear someone say, "Howl on d'yer drawers" = hold on to your trousers = wait a moment. To my ears that just sounds great, and to my eyes it reads well, as does "wai the nu" in Glasgow or "point o soyder" in Frome, or "gis the lather" in Tralee.

Proper grammar does have it's place but incorrect grammar gives colour and individuality.

Ethan, I have to say that I am impressed that such a tight tactical game is high on your list and that you are doing so well playing it. This is definitely a favorite of mine because to win you must do a lot of things well: manager your hand, pick up the right colours, plan wall placements, watch your opponents priorities, etc.

Ethan, glad to see you participating; and welcome to BGG. This is a place where people share opinions on EVERYTHING. It is a microcosm of the larger world wide web in general - but a fairly safe place to 'cut your teeth' (i.e. get your start).

What you are witnissing, first hand, is what we call a... a... 'poopie storm'. This happens in all open forums all over the internet!

A 'poopie storm' happens when someone has an opinion (like me) that other people don't agree with.

Mister Cranky is ripping into me for, well, for being cranky. And that is AWESOME!

One of the nicest people to ever post on the internet 'Tom Vasel' called me an 'idiot'. This is almost unheard of and something I will cherish for a long time.

The discussion is fraught with chaos and misunderstandings: all typical occurances in a 'poopie storm'.

I think you are a very lucky 10 year old. Happy gaming.

-BrewB

Tom didn't actually call anyone an idiot. He said most people playing board games are NOT idiots. He then said some people get their noses out of joint about thumbs and grammar, but he doesn't call ANYone an idiot.

I have to agree on the thumbs/grammar issue. Thumbs don't really mean anything except a warm fuzzy for the person being thumbed. And the grammar issue here shouldn't have been one anyway because as many have already stated, it isn't actually a grammar issue. It's a matter of opinion and there is no agreement on a hard and fast rule.

Other than that, Ethan, welcome to BGG and I hope you have fun with all the really interesting and awesome people here!

I asked him to teach me the rules one day when I was 8 because I suspected that the kid who 'taught' me the rules was cheating. My old man taught me the rules and played me 'straight-up'. I probably lost 20 or 30 games (I don't really know how many) before I beat him for the first time. It was a real win. It gave me a real sense of accomplishment.

And that's the essence of my original comment here.

Well, if you really distill your original comment down to its essence, it is just pettiness. You may think that the important accomplishment for Ethan is logging himself onto BGG and crowing about his gaming prowess, but I'm going to toss out that I think his father's actions here demonstrate a much greater accomplishment on both their parts than anything dreamt of in your philosophy, Horatio.

Look, good for you for beating your dad at chess. I'm sure that when you post the GeekList of all the games that you ever excelled at against your parents, the world will trip all over itself trying to shower you with thumbs, GeekGold, precious spices from the Orient, and perhaps even a baby lamb. Or is it because this will almost certainly never happen that forces you to rain on this particular parade? What did your dad teach you about being a grouch? (I only ask because I am a self-taught crank, and I'm hoping you didn't rely unduly on the churlishness of others to arrive at your current level of same.)

Joshua,

You magnificient bastard! That is a great idea for a geeklist. Sadly, as I may have aluded to in my post: "the only game my old man man ever played with me was Chess" therefore it would be a one-entry geeklist and I think they are getting really strict about those things around here.

As for my crankiness tutelege, much like Chess, my dad taught me some of the basics - but not much else. I have taken crankiness to a new level: instant rage. I can rage on and rage off at will.

I think you need to work on your crankiness as it seems to have waned; or at the very least change your online name to Mister Smarmy.

Cheers,

-BrewB
