I'm always perplexed at how difficult it is to find what wargames are being released when. So, I did a basic search for "Wargame 2009" and pulled together this geeklist of the games slated for release in 2009 (or in some cases, 2010), for your review. I have simply copied and pasted the text at the game's page so that they are all easily reviewable. The comments next to each game remain the words of their respective author(s) or publisher(s), not mine. :-)

Unfortunately, lots of the game identification numbers are not automatically linked to the picture of the game, and in some cases, there simply isn't one.

IMPROVEMENTS:

1. The list is now in alphabetical order and is still designed to let you add any others I may have missed and/or to add any games that are later slated for production. I thought that alphabetizing would allow game designers and publishers to easily check if their game is posted here, or not, and to add it, if needed.

2. There are double entries for some games. The main reason for this is that other posters posted their comments about a game, but not the publisher's text at the game page. Since I cannot edit their posts, I had to add another entry.

3. I have added over 180 games (the previous list was about 56 games), and it now totals 246 (but this includes double entries).

If you notice any errors, or incorrectly posted material, I apologize. Please drop me a geekmail and/or just post to the geeklist under the game in question and I will correct it.

STATUS

I would appreciate everyone's help, if you could, by posting a large-font status of the games, as their status changes. For instance, if a game is in playtesting, or final production, or has been released/shipped, just indicate it with a SHIPPED post. Thanks again for all the thumbs!

Hope you enjoy! Drummmmmm roollllllll plllllleeeeeeaaaasseeee.....

From the publisher's website:

You take on the role of Alexander the Great in his world-conquering quest to extend the Macedonian empire and achieve personal glory.

When playing the game, you are placed in Alexander’s footsteps when he comes of age in 338bc, just before the battle of Chaeronea. From that point on, you get to decide where to travel, when to battle, when to negotiate, and when to seek out divine prophesies to guide your actions.

You are supplied with soldiers and advisers to help you navigate the dangers of the battlefield and the negotiating table. These include Infantry, Archers, Phalanxes, Cavalry, Advisers, Scholars, Cortisones, and Spies. You will craftily combine these resources with your own plans to achieve victory, and glorification. And if you do well, you will be remembered as one of the greatest leaders ever to walk the earth.

The life of Alexander is divided into several campaigns, each spanning several years. During each campaign, you are given goals, but how you achieve those goals is up to you. Do you enter into battle? Or negotiate? How strong are you? How strong are they? What can you gain? These are all decisions you get to make, and must make well, if you are to live up to the immortal standards set before you.

The campaigns can either be played stand alone, or linked to play through his entire life. When played as one on-going life, the outcome of one campaign affects your starting situation in the next campaign.

Scheduled Components:
176 Full color counters (5/8”)
5 Full color Campaign sheets (11” x 17”)

mbmbmbmbmb
Fighting Formations is an ongoing series of games, each one focusing on several battles of a particular formation during World War II. The first title in the series is "Grossdeutschland Infantry Division, 1942-43". Future titles aren't yet set in stone but could be devoted to other famous divisions (Big Red One), Corps (Afrika Korps), regiments (442nd RCT), Commando troops, Ranger battalions, etc.

The scale of the game is 60 meters per hex with turns representing about 5 minutes of real time. Units are squads, guns with their inherent crews, and individual vehicles. Platoons are also employed.

The game has card Assets -- including such things as snipers, artillery, air support or demolitions -- but is not card-driven. It is also not the typical Igo-Yougo fare with a strict sequence of play. Instead, the base game engine is an impulse-type back and forth mechanic whereby the various Orders carry with them a certain cost in Initiative, with the person having the most Initiative at any given time being able to take the next action on the map.

This first game has the following (tentative) components:

3 22" x 34" back-printed mapsheets
6 countersheets (almost 700 counters, the smallest at 5/8")
55 cards
rulebook
playbook
an 8.5" x 22" track display
several cardstock player aids
dice: 2d6, 2d8, 2d10, 2d12 & 2d20
16 wooden cubes

mbmbmbmbmb
World at War magazine #5.

Finnish Front, 1941-42 (TFF), is the fifth game to be published in the “They Died With Their Boots On” series (S&T#236 & S&T#242).

TFF’s “Boots” system simulates what might otherwise appear to be hopeless campaigns, in this case the first stage of what the Finns call the “Continuation War.” It was fought between Axis (Finnish and German) forces and the Soviets during 1941-42, much of it north of the Arctic Circle. During that war the Finns recaptured the territory they’d lost to the Soviets in the Winter War of 1939-40. They failed to take Murmansk, however, which would have seriously hindered Allied Lend-Lease shipments to the Soviet Union.

TFF is played in sequential “game turns,” each of which is composed of interactive “phases” and “sub-phases.” During each Operations Phase, the players alternate picking markers from the command pool; each such pick thereby indicating which sub-command will be “activated” for movement and combat at that time. The High Command marker causes the Orders From The High Command Table to be checked. The player controlling a selected sub-command receives reinforcements for it, if any are available that game turn, and then moves and conducts combat with the units of that sub-command.

The armies in TFF are divided into “sub-commands,” each of which operates as a semi-autonomous force within its overall army. Sub-commands are defined by abbreviations and colored stripes on the unit-counters. Pulling certain markers will allow a player to conduct operations simultaneously with more than one sub-command.

From the publisher:

The second game of the trilogy is the largest. Now the Germans make an entrance with a wide variety of units and special rules. The Soviet side gets the Guards units as well as numerous of new air unit types. The grande campaign 1941-1944, can take up to 155 turns! Relax, in the middle of the campaign, approximately from Jan. I '42 to Jun. I '44, there will be a special feature, called the Position War (Entrenchment War), which will speed up the playing considerably.

There are also two shorter scenarios included, that suites very well for introduction; the 1941-scenario (Jun. IV '41 - Dec. IV '41 = 26 turns) and the 1944-scenario (Jun. II '44 - Sept. I '44 = 12 turns). In the 1941-scenario, the Finnish/German side has an advantage, while in the 1944-scenario, the Soviet side has an advantage.

Preliminary Release Date: 2009.

Other games in the series:

* The Finnish Trilogy 1939-1945: Winter war 1939-1940 (vol. 1)
* The Finnish Trilogy 1939-1945: Lapland War 1944-1945 (vol. 3)

The Coat of Arms of Clan Montgomery - Scotland. Yes, that's a woman with the head of a savage in her hand, and an anchor. No clue what it means, but it's cool.
mbmbmbmbmb
Strategy & Tactics magazine #255

First Battle of Britain (1BoB) is a two-player wargame of intermediate complexity covering the 1917-18 German bomber offensive against England. The objective is to score more morale points than your opponent. Historically the bombing inflicted little real damage on British cities in general or industry in particular. The attacks' psychological impact, however, was enormous: the campaign demonstrated Britain was vulnerable to outside invaders for the first time in a millennium. Victory is therefore determined based on the German player's ability to panic the British populace.

Each air unit represents a flight or squadron of aircraft. Each hexagon represents five miles from side to opposite side. Each "operational turn" represents one month. Each "flying turn" represents 20 minutes of flying time.

1BoB has three scenarios. Scenario 1 covers the situation in 1917, with both sides racing to build up their airpower. Scenario 2 covers 1918, with both sides at full strength. Scenario 3 covers the entire campaign from 1917 through 1918. Players who want to get right into a head-to-head contest of strength in the skies over England are advised to begin with Scenario 2. Experienced players will need about four hours to finish one of the yearly scenarios, while the campaign game will take about eight hours to finish.

Units include bombers and fighters, both carrier and land based, as well as Zeppelins, Royal Navy seaplane tenders and aircraft carriers, anti-aircraft artillery, aerodromes, civil defense and early warning. German formations and aircraft types included in the large-size iconic counter-mix (176 total), by famed artist Larry Hoffman, include the following: Albatross D-I, Fokker D-VII and Pfalz D-III fighters; the elite "England" and "Kagohl 3" bomber squadrons; along with plenty of Gotha and Riesen bombers. On the British side there are: Avro 504, Be-2, Be-12, Fe-2, Sopwith Camel, Sopwith Pup and Se5A fighters; along with DH-4, Handley Page and Strutter bombers. All planes are rated for air-to-air combat, pursuit, bombardment and speed.

Collins Epic Wargames is planning to offer Frontline General: San Pietro Infine for preorder in May 2009 at a significant discount for early orders. Entirely tactical, this wargame covers the WWII Battle of San Pietro in its entirety through a series of challenging scenarios. New US, German, and Italian units represent the full historic strength of the fighting forces that struggled for control of the mountains Sammucro, Lungo, and Rotondo, and the small village of San Pietro Infine located in the foothills of Monte Sammucro.

Collins Epic Wargames is working with artist Mark Mahaffey to produce a functional and beautiful large, mounted 32"x27" full color map at a scale of 1"=500'. Each 1.2" hex represents 200 yards with platoons and sections as the basic maneuver units. All terrain modifiers are conveniently printed right in the hex to provide even more terrain representation flexibility and ease of reference during the game. Large 7/8" counters are easy to read and pair one for one with the game’s Unit Cards - Cards that handle all of the important combat and maneuver stats, track earned experience, and provide a step-loss reduction to easily track damage.

More information will be released on Frontline General: San Pietro Infine once it is available for preorder. Also planned is a series of videos to preview the game’s components and gameplay once the artwork is refined.

Assault the Beaches of D-Day and Beyond!

Frontline is a tactical WWII ground combat card game for 1 to 6 players. The game covers small unit action during the D-Day beach assaults and the steady stream of conflicts as the Allied troops advanced toward Germany.

Each player commands a squad of 4 to 10 British, American, or German soldiers and vehicles. Each card represents one soldier or vehicle. Each unit has inherent actions each turn including moving and attacking with different modes of fire. An action card deck enhances basic actions, and provides units with spur of the moment options.

The game uses counters to illustrate vital game information such as wounds, range, ammo, command, and morale. The range system is easy to use and simulates the movement of forces on the battlefield.

Frontline can also be played solitaire using the enemy Tactic cards. These cards give general, specific, and conditional orders to the enemy troops based on the current battlefield situation.

You can create battles by purchasing your starting forces, playing pre-made scenarios, or using the balanced randomized engagement rules.

The Glory That Was is a series of games depicting several different battles from the ancient world.
Volume I, Greece, depicts a number of battles from the Persian War to the War of the Successors, while volume II, Rome, will have different battles from the Early Republic to the Late Roman Empire.
After the Peloponnesian War, Sparta was for around three decades the uncontested military leader of the Greek Poleis, and considered almost invincible in an open field battle, for the strength and the courage of their Hoplites.
Since 378 BC, a coalition of cities from the northern part of Greece, led by Athens and especially Thebes, starts to disrupt this power and for a short period of time, under the leadership of two great generals, like Pelopidas, and especially Epaminondas, the small city of Thebes gained a clear spot in ancient history, making the acropolis of their city (called Cadmea and for a long time subject to the control of a Spartan garrison) a sort of paladin of freedom against Lacedaemonian power.
This game scenarios, Leuctra and Mantineia, depicts the rise and fall of this short but sweet "empire", being an eulogy of one of the greatest military leaders of all time: Epaminondas.
Map scale will be variable, depending on the battle depicted, while each unit will normally represents from 100 to 1.000 infantry and from 25 to 250 cavalry or missile units.

Contains:
2 11x17" full color maps (2 8.5x11"pieces)
148 counters and markers
14 Cards
10 Page Rules in English

The God Kings is a new wargame covering the ancient wars of the Near East, from the 15th to the 13th century BC. Players control the armies of Egypt (New Kingdom), the Hittites, Mitanni (a long-forgotten hurrite kingdom), and the Babylonian Kassites. The resurgent Assyria also makes an appearance in the game.

The God Kings is a card-driven game, a system modeled on Mark Simonitch's Hannibal: Rome vs. Carthage. Each kingdom and its army is led by its King, and there are many Kings included; some great and some not so great... Ramesses II, The Pharaoh Queen Hatchepsut, Thutmosis III (the Napoleon of antiquity), Amenophis IV (better known as Akenathon), and of course Tutankhamon all appear for Egypt's greater Glory ! Discover also Suppiluliuma, greatest of the Hittite kings, terror of his enemies, and Muwatalli II who would face and defeat the Egyptians at Kadesh.

The object of the game is to establish the greatest Empire of the time, dominating provinces that will pay the Empire Tribute and provide you with timber, while defeating the armies of your neighbors and the Barbarians that always seem to appear at the worst possible times.

The game is playable by 2 to 4 players, with numerous scenarios - playing time from 15 minutes (Battle of Kadesh) up to 6 hours for the complete campaign.

BREAKING NEWS : This game is to be published in 2009 by Compass Game http://compassgames.com/

Black Waters is a 64-page book supplement for the Great War at Sea series based on American plans to fight Germany. Most of the scenarios take place in the Caribbean Sea, but some actions are also placed in European waters.

There are 210 die-cut and mounted playing pieces, the same pieces that originally appeared in our now out-of-print U.S. Navy Plan Black. The Americans get ships ranging from three examples of the South Dakota class through the first American dreadnoughts, the South Carolina class, and the last of the American pre-dreadnoughts, the Connecticutt class. There are also a pair of light carriers based on American plans to convert big armored cruisers.

The Germans add three of the GK4531 battle cruiser design and three representatives of the GK4251 battleship. And of course Germany receives an aircraft carrier, the proposed conversion of the huge liner Imperator. Argentina and Brazil receive part of their fleets, and there are two hypothetical Mexican battleships and small contingents from the Netherlands, Venezuela and Colombia.

The Caribbean map originally provided in Plan Black is included as well, making this supplement playable with the use of any other Great War at Sea game. There are over two dozen new scenarios, including the War Plan Silver set based on Woodrow Wilson's very serious threat to go to war with Italy in May 1919, plus revised versions of most of those originally seen in Plan Black.

This is not a stand-alone game; ownership of any Great War at Sea game is required to play some of the scenarios and Mediterranean, Jutland and Plan Red to play all of them.

mbmbmbmbmb
During the first half of the 20th century, the United States and the Japanese Empire constantly made plans for a naval war against the other rising power. Each believed that the U.S. Navy would fight its way across the Pacific Ocean, with important clashes taking places in island chains like the Marianas and the Carolines.

Pacific Crossroads is the new introductory boxed game for the Great War at Sea series. It's based on the actual plans of both the United States and Japan for naval conflict at the close of World War I and immediately afterwards. Players try to seize and hold bases to either enable or stop the American drive across the Pacific.

While the game is intended for new players, there's plenty here for old salts, too. New ships like the American 1910 battle cruiser design are present, as are the battle cruisers the Americans feared Japan would acquire from the Royal Navy. There's a lot of naval warfare in this small package, which also ushers in a new edition of the series rules.

The 22x17-inch operational map covers waters around the Mariana and Caroline Islands and the coast of northern New Guinea. Players maneuver their fleets on this map and search for one another with aircraft, submarines and surface ships. When contact is made, player moves to the tactical map.

The tactical map is a generic blue field of hexagons, used to resolve surface combat. There, ships maneuver and fight using their gunnery and torpedo factors. Each player rolls a number of dice according to the ship’s capabilities, hitting on a result of 6. Gunnery and torpedo damage tables give the results: ships can suffer damage to engines, hull or armament. The combat systems yield results rapidly but in a historically accurate fashion, giving a good balance of fun and insight.

In June 1919, 11 battleships, five battle cruisers, eight light cruisers and 50 destroyers of the German High Seas Fleet attempted to scuttle themselves in the British anchorage at Scapa Flow. Most of the crews succeeded, and the enraged Allied Powers soon stripped Germany of her remaining modern warships as well.

The mass sinking at Scapa Flow did clear up one diplomatic flashpoint: Some American naval staff officers feared they would be incorporated into the Royal Navy and used in an Anglo-American conflict. As punishment for the German act of defiance, the Allies seized all remaining German dreadnought battleships and modern cruisers, plus 400,000 tons of floating cranes and drydocks and other equipment and all submarines. Germany's new Wiemar Republic would have to build its new Reichsmarine around a core of aging ships already docked as obsolete by the old Imperial Navy.

Reichsmarine is a Great War at Sea supplement exploring the alternate history possibilities had the High Seas Fleet not been scuttled. Just like Second World War at Sea: Imperial & Royal Navy, it comes as a .pdf download: You get everything right away, but you will have to assemble the playing pieces yourself. It has everything you expect in a naval game supplement: scenarios, ship data sheets, and playing pieces.

The supplement includes ten scenarios, or separate game situations, based on battles that might have been waged by the Royal Navy or Weimar Germany. The ships lost at Scapa Flow are all present in British colors; those surrendered afterwards are in the colors of Weimar Germany. Plus, one-inch "long" pieces are provided for Royal Navy destroyer leaders. This module is not playable by itself, but requires ownership of Jutland, Mediterranean, U.S. Navy Plan Gold and Sea of Troubles to enjoy all of the scenarios.

Reichsmarine is sold exclusively via .pdf download. The playing pieces are not die-cut-and-mounted, nor are the scenario book or the ship data printed. Instead it comes as a series of .pdf files that will need to be assembled into the game's components.

Feature game in World at War magazine #6

Greater East Asia War uses the much-liked system pioneered in the earlier Twilight of the Ottomans: World War I in the Middle East design in Strategy & Tactics magazine.

Greater East Asia War (GEAW) is a two-player, intermediate-complexity, strategic-level simulation of the World War II campaigns waged across China and Southeast Asia.

Each hex on the 34x22” map represents 74.5 miles (120 kilometers) from side to opposite side. The map extends from Korea and Manchuria in the north to Indonesia in the south, to the Ganges River delta and Mongolia on the west. Each game turn represents three months. Units of maneuver are corps, armies, divisions and brigades, and they’re presented in the form of 176 large-size, NATO-style counters, with the following types represented: infantry, light infantry, garrison, armor, mechanized, marines, airborne, special operations, cavalry, fortress, headquarters, tactical airbases, strategic airbases, supply, naval bombardment task forces, carrier task forces, and amphibious task forces.

The concept of “victory points” (VP) is central to play of the game. Players begin each scenario with a designated number of them. They expend them to gain reinforcements and carry out actions. They gain new VP as a result of achieving objectives; they lose VP when they lose units in combat. To win the game you must have more VP than your opponent; so play becomes a balancing act between expending VP and attaining objectives.

There are 12,446 words in the game’s basic rules, and another 10,886 in the optionals (which will only be presented in the on-line eRules). That means two experienced players can complete the shortest of the game’s three scenarios in about six hours. The game has been designed with two-player play primarily in mind, but solitaire play is doable.

Guelphs and Ghibellines simulates the traditional clashes between XIIIth century armies with an original system, allowing to reproduce typical tactics of the battle of the era, and focusing on progressive combat fatigue and loss of cohesion of formations on the battlefield.
All the main protagonists of the battles and all the different types of troops are considered, included cavalry with various level of armour protection, infantry, archers, crossbowmen, palvesari, the Comunal Carroccio, etc.
The 3 battles are Montaperti (1260), Benevento (1266) and Campaldino (1289)
