Many games have caught my eye and my imagination, causing me to think, this could be really fun. So I buy it, I open it, I admire the board, the pieces, the rules. I gather the game group and we give it a go....nothing. No fun, no imagination, no good. Here are my top 10 disappointing games. I am sure many of you will disagree, and may even take offense. Post your thoughts, list your disappointing games, and remember, we all have differnt tastes. It goes from most disappoining #1 - 10 so if you want a countdown, go to the bottom.

Not once, but twice I have been duped by this game. I remember when it first came out. A great theme, ships, treasure, Kings Commissioners, Pirate Ports, Hostages, Ransom; what more could a player want? Interaction, Adventure, Tension, Action. This game had none. Either time. This, due to its double offense, is my most disappointing game.

Standing in the game aisle at Toys R Us my friend and I see the box. We love miniatures. We love Fantasy. Knights, goblins, ogres, castles; we thought we had died and gone to heaven. We each buy a one. Our minds are blown when we open the box. All the miniatures...tooo cool. Then we played the game. It had its moment of fun, but the number of totally imbalanced games because of the shuffle of the deck made for a great letdown.

I picked this one up on Ebay. I had seen it in a store window on vacation but the store was closed. But through the window I saw Egypt, tombs, sculpted play pieces, a beautiful game board, wonderful art and cards, all in a gigantic box. When we played it the first time we wondered if we missed something. After the second time we knew we had not. This was one lame game with really nice makeup.

This monster had all the promise. Nice maps, a blending of two popular games from a decade earlier. With some creativity the blending would make a nice comprehensive WW1 game. Instead there was no time spent on modernizing the game. While claiming to have step loss units, with few exceptions, it did not. While having random event chits, they were vastly under utilized. The combat systems were out dated and the whole game felt like two old and out dated games packed into one nice new box. Actually, that is what it is. It just could have been so much more.

This game had me going with the map. The map is beautiful. The setting is ripe for a good war game. The rules, the play testing, and the pace of this game all left a bad taste. This needs more than just house rules, it needs new rules on the scale of the Napoleonic Wars on first release.

Don't get me wrong. This game is not bad. So don't air me out yet. But I bought this game based on the cover. Giant troll, party of adventurers. Fantasy Flight Games. What could go wrong? Yes, I know the adage about covers. But I am constantly looking for a cool dungeon quest game. This was not it. It is a good game in its own right. But it could have any theme and be the same game.

Read a lot about it here, thought I would love it. Played it at GenCon this year with strangers to me. We got it at the game libarary and I hated it. Just not my type of fun.

But I really had my heart set on liking this one so I played it again and found it just as dull that time also. I don't really think it is a bad game, just not my style of game at all. And for the record I still want to like it

I signed up for a game of 7 Ages at the first bgg.con based on its exciting premise: a massive civilizationish game about the rise and fall of many different empires over a 6000 year period.

Had I known the truth - that it's a game where all you do is fight over territory, and where the draw of a single card can undo three hours of work - I wouldn't have bothered.

My wife asked me what game I wanted for Christmas - this and Battlelore were both being released about the same time, and I plumped for this. The idea looked great, the pieces looked fantastic. Christmas came, and that afternoon we sat down and opened this up. I read the rules. Then I read them again. I set the game up and we started to play. Now, it wasn't that the rules were complicated, they were just bad - lots of ifs, ands, and buts to worry about with the whole package just lacking any kind of elegance. Over the course of the holiday we tried this three times, and each time the rule book was thumbed through a dozen times a game, and each time we came up with an exception we weren't quite sure how to deal with. Even when the game did 'flow', it lacked any level of excitement or tension.
So honestly now, I really can't stand to look at it. I feel let down.

This is one of the only games for which the info on BGG led me astray. Huge ratings. Cool setting/theme. Neat wood pieces and tiles. Knizia. I thought I'd love it!

But it turned out to absolutely maddeningly abstract and difficult. I couldn't really see the relationship of the theme to the gameplay, and couldn't really figure out how to not get destroyed by any player that had played the game more than me.

No fun whatsoever. Sold.

Ok, I know there really isn't much that I should have been excited about in this game, but I loved the artwork and the premise. Red Dragon Inn was also very good so I gave this one a shot and picked it up at my FLGS.

Well..... It is pretty much Chutes and Ladders where players use cards instead of you falling on a Chute, mixed with....well.....I don't know what, but it wasn't very fun at all. Everybody that I played it with just wanted it to be over.

Now before people jump all over me, I should remind everyone that this is a list of disappointments, not bad games.

I perhaps expected too much. I read the rules and thought it would be amazing, basically, Twilight Struggle, but with some clever luck mitigation. So perhaps I had over hyped in my mind.

Once I played it a bit I severly let down. While it was easier and shorter than Twilight Struggle, it really lacked the depth of play. Much of the game was about simply playing out your hand efficiently, it lacked the ability to cycle cards and so event luck was maximised as well as removing all the delicious long term planning. Add to that only endgame scoring, and basically a higher luck factor in general (I know this is up for debate, but you can certainly argue, skill is less of a factor).

I don't want to bag this game too much, I've played it quite a bit and it isn't terrible, but it wasn't the earth shattering game I unfairly expected. It is still a good game and I do enjoy playing it, just not as much as Twilight Struggle.

The hype surrounding this game is insane compared to the mind numbing experience of play.
At least Pillars offers more options than:
1st player - food track
2nd player - breeding hut
3rd player - axe
4th player - resources, cards or huts
And I thought Puerto Rico could get formulaic.

This is what almost everyone plays for over half the game. It's not until well into the game that people consider other options initially.
This is a pretty piss poor excuse for a worker placement game.

In which I get lambasted...again...

I always have to drag this one out for the biggest disappointment. Love the books, love the movie. I love the epic nature of the game and all of the production. I read through the rules multiple times before buying and felt confident that it would give me that meaty game of LOTR. Oogled over the board, units, and cards. Even played a sample turn with my then girlfriend and seemed to work out.

Once we played the actual game, nothing but frustration. Seemed too easy to overlook the non-intuitive rules. Didn't play out as expected on either side. We let it go in frustration and tried to pick it up the next night with a fresh persepective and it just got worse. We were both so angry with the game that we quite a 2nd time and only returned a 3rd night to finish it out.

I want to return to it since I invested the money and everyone tells me there is a gem of a game here. Convincing my girlfirend-turned-wife to give it another shot is an uphill battle though.

I was expecting something akin to Sims: The Board Game, only with real players, and interesting situations brought on by the goals.

Nothing of the sort. I still feel like the part of the game with making friends and the phones are totally broken.

You have to work the game to make it work; and that's just too much work.

It's a crying shame too cause everything is there for something fantastic.

I really enjoy railroad-themed games as do my family and friends (Ticket to Ride, Empire Builder, TransAmerica, Railroad Tycoon, On the Underground, plus I have 6 others still to get out of shrinkwrap), and Metro sounded like a lighter and fun game of the Paris subway system. I played solitaire to learn it and wasn't too impressed, then I talked my wife into trying it and after 10 minutes of play she said she was dizzy and she ran from the table crying. The board really is a mess of spaghetti and I can understand her physical reaction. I'd have to say that any game that has one of the players running from the table crying after just 10 minutes qualifies as a disappointment.

I was really excited about this game. A highly social deduction game that plays 6, woohoo!

We've played this thrice now, and all three times it has fallen flat. The deduction element isn't just weak, it's non-existent due to all the card-passing and other chaos. Asking any question you want seems fun at first, but it's nigh impossible to ask a question which helps you and not everyone else. Add to that the incredible imbalance of the library cards, and the lethargic pace caused by slow movement, and it just didn't work for us.

I'm still not completely ready to give up on it, just because it still seems like something that should work with our game group. Maybe we need to throw in a couple house rules or something. Plus, we already laminated a set of six deduction sheets--we've got to get some fun back for that investment!
