Many games have caught my eye and my imagination, causing me to think, this could be really fun. So I buy it, I open it, I admire the board, the pieces, the rules. I gather the game group and we give it a go....nothing. No fun, no imagination, no good. Here are my top 10 disappointing games. I am sure many of you will disagree, and may even take offense. Post your thoughts, list your disappointing games, and remember, we all have differnt tastes. It goes from most disappoining #1 - 10 so if you want a countdown, go to the bottom.

This one has been a let down to everyone I've shown. I'd agree with them, the first game of this wasn't the best, but as I play it it's gets a bit better.

The idea of time travel sound great, but in reality the rules can be VERY fiddly, and I really don't like the luck of the card draws.

I was hoping to like this more.

Hopefully I did this right - my first time adding something to a GeekList so please forgive me if I botched it.

Anyway, my good buddy Paul introduced me to Settlers which I'd loved and then pitched me on El Grande and I just hated it. Theme was boring (for me, it's of course a subjective thing) and the gameplay reminded me of playing Rook or Spades ::: shudders ::: where after a while if players learn the game and are experienced, there's really not much variety or excitement. This game was an example (for me) of how the abstract Euro game-style isn't always something I enjoy. Just not a game I'll ever want to play again.

Unfortunately it's been so long since I had to suffer through playing it that my memory of everything else I disliked has faded to some extent or I'd do a much more specific and better job of explaining my utter lack of interest in this boring game.

(I'm sorry if I have offended anyone who dearly loves it - I know it's held in high-esteem, for some reason, here on the Geek and I can respect that even if I completely, utterly don't agree.)

Everyone told me this was a light, random kid's game, and I believed them. So when I rented it from my FLGS and played it with my kids, my expectations weren't too high. But then I got playing and started to enjoy trying to find a balance between powder and food in my holds, and calculating where to move my ship, and attacking my kids and piling up all of those powder chits on the table and trying to blow each other away. In short, I was seduced by the theme, the pretty graphics and the game play that coyly hinted at a real pirate game. Then the winner was determined pretty much by random, and I found myself disappointed that there isn't a real pirate game that can be played with my kids in less than two hours.

I thought I would love this game. I loved LOTR, both the books and the movies. I enjoyed co-operative games, and I especially liked the Knizia game I'd played previously. (Ingenious, which I knew would be nothing like this). The game had gotten good reviews on the geek.... and best of all it was NZ$5, or about US$3.

And I was still dissapointed. I've played it 3 times, and each time everybody has been dissapointed. The game seems to have... no charm to its play. Your decissions feel 'scripted' and its only at the end of the game does doom seem to approach.

Maybe I missing something I'd liked to have missed something, but the game seems so flat without any of the interesting decissions that other games have.

So, i love adventure/rpg style boardgames and this is the grand-daddy, so what if the rules are complex, i've coded computer games for 6 years of my career (And designed stuff for the other 7), i laugh at complexity... I'll trade some cool stuff for this bad boy...

Then tries the pc conversion.. STILL don't understand how to play it. Traded it away.

This makes Die Macher look like Ludo...

So very disappointed... Still on the look out for the ultimate dungeon/rpg style game, TOMB is currently the closest, still room for improvement.

We bought this game fairly early in our return to board gaming last year, after we'd had many great experiences with LNoE. We love horror themed games, and this was our third, after Arkham Horror. Ok, so maybe LNoE and AH had our expectations high, but we both love vampires, Gothic and Victorian themes, and literary connections, plus I'd played Scotland Yard many a time as a kid, so I thought the hidden movement system for Dracula was a sure-fire winner. Oh, so wrong. So terribly terribly wrong. This game has theme all over it, but the implementation is so dreadfully boring, rereading the book would be more fun. As it usually played out for us, the hunters spend the first hour or more staggering around the board, trying to get a grip on Dracula's location - by pure chance! If the Dracula player is any good at all, it is not hard to elude the hunters. And the hunters get very frustrated, naturally, and quite bored. Dracula can have more fun sowing his minions around, but I have to say, this game is not nearly balanced enough, as Dracula really has all the advantages, as I see it. We played it a few times, then shelved it, waiting for more players. Well, we eventually played it with 5 and had the same results. Sold it, and don't regret it. We're still waiting for someone to do the vampire theme right. Can't understand why this is so highly ranked on the 'geek.

I'm shocked no one's listed this game yet.

I had a quick learning curve to temper my opinions about games solely on the hype here. I traded for it without knowing much about the game, only seeing its (then) #2 ranking on BGG.

When I finally played it, it seemed more tedious than it's really worth. And particularly frustrating was the inability to ever be anywhere near competitive again after having one bad turn (that may be the exception, rather than the rule, I'm not entirely sure).

I've played it a couple more times since, and still got the same vibe.

I still have the game. It's just not a first choice game in my collection.

I absolutely am a TimJim Games groupie. I have spent many evenings playing a lot of their games and enjoyed them tremendously and so have my gaming friends. 2038, Age of Exploration, Outpost (still looking for my own copy of this), Fast Food Franchise, Time Agent. They're all great, fun, brilliant games.

And I've always liked Twilight Imperium and we've all had a lot of fun with that game as well.

So, when I first saw Throneworld, I thought "Oh boy!! Twilight Imperium done by TimJim Games, this is going to be awesome!!" I couldn't wait to get this game!

Then I played it. Sigh. Take everything that was fun about Twilight Imperium (cool minis, political phase, flavor), remove it, add rolling 40-50 six sided dice for each round of combat (and trying doing that without knocking chits all over the place!) and you have Throneworld.

The ONLY TimJim game I never liked. That's why it was such a huge disappointment for me.

Unfortunately this game was nothing like I expected. The luck element is frustratingly prominent, kingmaking hangs like a shadow over every move, and once you get behind or stuck in a corner there is little hope of coming back. This game turns into an exercise in tedium and hoping for the right tile.

I was expecting economic engine building and long term planning. This is no Civ-lite.

This game looked a little like Risk when I was introduced to it. Trying to conquer the world was fun, so I figured trying to conquer Europe would be too. And I'd get to use fleets as well as armies. Cool.

Then there was all this frantic discussion every turn, and the writing of orders. And finally--the stab in the back. devil

I was too thin-skinned for that. cry Too stunned to say anything, and feeling kinda sick, I bumbled through the rest of the game somehow. I could tell some of the other players were feeling a little sorry for me.

I played a postal game once again, years later. Hated that too.

I read a review that sums it up nicely. The reviewer said this is just the opposite of a "feel-good" game; it's a feel-rotten game.

A boring game I can handle. But not a game that makes you feel bad when you play it. This one not only condones but pretty much requires deceitfulness. Must take a certain kind of player to enjoy it.

Yeah I know everyone is going to hate me for this but I was really disappointed by Ticket to Ride. I have a 10 year old and a 17 year old, it takes a really special game to appeal to them both. This was not that game. The components were high quality, the map was beautiful but it was just too boring for us. Nobody felt any tension about any part of the game win or lose nobody cared. We played it twice before I sold it on ebay.

When I first noticed this game on bgg I read all these reviews of what a great but simple to explain game this was. At that time my kids were 5 and 6 and I figured I would be able to play it with them. Sure you can play it with young kids but there is just no gameplay. After playing the game I reread the rules thinking I missed something but no. That same night I played it with my wife and she was giving me this puzzled look halfway during the game and I could see her thinking: "why in the world did you spend your money on this?"

This was the first game that I really wanted before it was out. I was so excited for this game as it looked really cool and the pieces looked great. I loved the idea of a co-op game but with a secret traitor.

But it just never lived up to the excitement. While the bits are great, the game play is horribly boring. Run around the board and play cards. There is never any tough decisions to make. There is no real reason to stay hidden as the traitor, you simply should reveal and just go and start throwing catapults out. In short, it was a cool idea that just did not live up to the hype.

This seemed like it could be, or at least come close to being, the civ-lite holy grail that many, including myself, have been searching for. Nope. It turns out to be a game with glacial pacing, an odd resource/trading mechanic and uninspired combat. What's missing is that feeling of epic-ness and that you are building and improving your civilization. The game always seems to end right when you think things are starting to get interesting.

Unimpressed by the base game, I bought the expansion based on the recommendations here on BGG. For my group, the net effect of the expansion was to add even more cards, which bogged the game down. Every time a player discovered a Wonder, he had to select a card, which means he had to go through the entire deck and read each and every Wonder card. I think the problem is that the expansion provides too many choices for a player to calculate and consider in a reasonable amount of time.

Traded the base game and expansion away in a math trade, and I'm just a bit more jaded about ever finding a civ-lite.

I had heard a lot of great things about this two-player game, so when I got a copy as a gift, the wife and I eagerly dove into it, only to discover: it's Stratego. Big freaking deal. And it's actually worse than Stratego because in Stratego I don't have to remember all the weirdo special powers of each number, just which integers are larger than which other integers.

I guess if slapping a Hobbit on something gets you engorged then there's a wonderful game here, but we played two miserable games of it and then I traded it away.

Shortly afterwards I borrowed Hera and Zeus and saw that it was the same damn thing again. That one didn't even get past reading the rules.

I now own Stratego, but I doubt I'll ever get the wife to play it.

OK, I'll admit my expectations for Clout weren't all that high: a quick dexterity/board position game, with solid components and artwork. A more portable version of Diceland, perhaps. Collectible is a downside, but for a light game there's no need to get a complete collection or anything.

But this game didn't even meet my expectations, sadly. Starting with collectibility: I can live with some, but this game a) requires all pieces used to be the same faction, and b) adds in a "chase" faction, with about 3 pieces per booster box. ('B' is "mitigated" by the fact that the chase pieces were packed on the same side of every booster box, IIRC... shake ) The initial set was huge, so you needed a large investment to get enough synergistic pieces. Gameplay seemed lackluster too: you threw your piece, something happened (maybe), and then it sat there. None of the maneuver I saw in Diceland, and the game was generally over too fast for me to feel like I'd accomplished anything. It just seemed like a vehicle to print collectible artwork.

The thing that really mystified me, though, was that it had a loyal following at my FLGS for a while surprise . I would watch games, and everyone seemed to be having fun...I tried several times, but just never saw anything to it.

i saw this at our daughter and her finance's place during a visit and only had time to go through the cards. the artwork was great, the accompanying text was light and humourous and the gameplay seemed okay... a bit on the weak side, but okay.

in the months between visits the idea took hold that i really wanted to try this game out. i'm not a dress-up/halloween kinda guy, but the characters seemed to just cry out for overly dramatic card placement and readings.

unfortunately, when we did play it, everyone else at the table just sort of blandly read the cards as they placed them and then looked at me a bit oddly when i tried doing them in character.

ah well. at least we all ganged up on the fiance and ensured that he'd lose so it wasn't a complete loss.

Good game lost in symbols you can't remember, which is unfortunate. The first game wasn't terrible, but there has been no requests to play again.

Only game I ever pre-ordered.

Components are a little bit dry. All the pretty pictures on little square chits. No figures. The map feels unnecessary and looks more like a grid then an actual dungeon.

The game play isn't exactly heroic. Instead of dungeon raids, it feels more like a race to feed the heroes to the meat grinder. Hard to be attached to any hero when you are constantly swapping out the dead.

But again maybe it's just my expectation.

I was predisposed to liking this game.

Light wargame playable in an evening. Check.
Medieval subject matter. Check.
Mark Mahaffey art. Check.
Part of the excellent IGS line from MMP. Check.

However, the leader death rules can render your plans moot at any point. Yes, you can somewhat plan for things, yes there are ways to mitigate the pain, but a bad run of dice (who hasn't had those?) can literally destroy your position in an instant. This makes all your prior work effectively useless and costs you precious time in recovery.

I got ripped to shreds in my negative review of the game (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/345141) as I "didn't give it a fair chance." It's entirely possible that my opinion of the game will improve if I gave it more time, but the initial pain was so bad, and there are so many better games playable in an evening, there is no way I'm spending more time learning how to play this game "properly."
