Many games have caught my eye and my imagination, causing me to think, this could be really fun. So I buy it, I open it, I admire the board, the pieces, the rules. I gather the game group and we give it a go....nothing. No fun, no imagination, no good. Here are my top 10 disappointing games. I am sure many of you will disagree, and may even take offense. Post your thoughts, list your disappointing games, and remember, we all have differnt tastes. It goes from most disappoining #1 - 10 so if you want a countdown, go to the bottom.

I imported a copy of this game since it was described as having a similar play style to Groo: The Game which is my all time favorite card game. Our first game was terrible! It was so random that one player never got anything going on his kingdom while some of us got lucky to get resources we needed. All the cards were in one deck and you had to draw resource generators or you were basically screwed. So it was all luck since without recources you couldn't grow your kingdom and defend it. Plus Groo has so many cool building and event cards that this one didn't have. Just a really, really watered down version.

To be fair, there's updated rules now that drop the randomness of card draws down a lot. So want to see how it plays now. But with the original rules it just doesn't work.

I was SOOO wanting to like this game. But setting it up is a major pain. Literally. Should have come with band aids... Widening the holds a bit helped somewhat but still, the game was disappointing. Traded away. soblue

Pirates - Check
Cool ship mini's - Check
Dripping wtih theme with stuff like fireships and chain shot - Check

What, this is a race game?!?! WTF?

The game play didn't match the pieces. Its all about who can ge to the treasure islands and back to base first, not who can out maneuver and out gun each other. Find ht ebest combination of ship speed and crew that add speed and you win.

Now to be fair I haven't played since shortly after REvolution came out so maybe the new expansions have helped.

I saw them and though: Cool! It's like Pirates (A fun little minature game I happen to like a lot) only with Star Wars themed ships in space!!

Eh... no... It's like an overprices MagicTG light with three-dimensional cards, and added randomness.

Not a bad-bad game, but compared to what I had hoped, its light, gimmicky and to add insult to injury, to fiddely and prone to breakage.

Luckily the ships themselves are nice just as ornaments a top a PC-screen

Was hoping for a fun race game I could play with my kids. Couldn't be less unimpressed... There's not even a board! Oh well...game purchases can't all be winners. (I traded for this one but had I paid retail for it I would have been severely cheesed...)

This was one of my first tools to reintroduce us in boardgaming after some years in blank. We bought it for it's great fame and being a 2 players game.

Finally we find a simple card game with number-based strategy. OK, I respect other players that find it really good... but I must say it's, IMHO, like any other public game you could play with a common card deck. Yes, it's fun, but not so great.

Just plain sucked! I was expecting an adventure game. What I got was an adventure game without the adventure. The quest cards don't add to the story (if there is a story), all the battles seem more or less the same, the movement dice was not intuitive, the characters are marginally different and overall just a repetitive mess.

The only thing redeeming about the game are the amount expansions available. However, it would have been nice if they made the base game good the first time around without the expansions.

I bought Dracula because it looked interesting, 2 players, and has a theme that my partner love.

My disappointment is that one of the two side seems to always win, and there are IMHO too many winning condition. In the end we don't play it often.

I bought the Z-Man version on a whim after hearing good things about the original. It has beautiful components, but I was rather disappointed with the game play. There is too little decision-making and virtually no player interaction. Sometimes results make no sense, such as becoming shipwrecked whilst crossing a desert. The pages of the Book of Tales are flimsy and probably will not hold up well to multiple play with all the necessary page-flipping (maybe some enterprising person could make a file for the Ipad?). Overall I think the game system (now over 25 years old) has been rendered obsolete by computer RPGs.

This is a game that I want to like. The components are beautiful and functional. The political control aspect is nailed down completely, if in an abstract fashion. The designer clearly is passionate about the game. It plays in two hours or less, just as promised.

In the end I am left disappointed and a bit flustered.

First, the game is as close to being a Euro as any wargame I have ever played. This will draw in some fans, but I find it too abstract to faithfully represent what it claims to represent. Everything in the game is stamped with generic. The cards that influence battles can be played over and over (with the Arnold exception). The strength point counters might as well be wooden blocks (but without the neat Columbia stickers). Don't let the names on the generals fool you: there is nothing original or real in how they are represented. They do the job the designer intended, but in a flavourless fashion that has sucked all the cardboard life.

Second, most of the historical events give one the impression that the AWI was one of the dullest rebellions in the history of such things. Then again, the mover and shaker events, as such, may or may not get played. Imagine the AWI without the DOI?

Third, the ratings on the generals defy history even if they fit the game design. To claim that the ratings' numbers of a set of generals is justified because it works in the overall scheme of the design while warping history is not something I would post on ads to sell the game. In the end, it is the fallback excuse that justifies a mulititude of gaming sins. "It works in my design, so shut up about the history." General Washington becomes the Ubergeneral who receives special advantages over every commander, even the ones who always defeated him on the battlefield. He has the ability to repeat Trenton & Princeton in any winter just because it is worked into the design. General Greene is the equal to the man--Cornwallis--who defeated Greene in every battle they fought.

There is more, but this is enough. In the end, we can be thankful for Mark Herman's original contributions to CDG's even if none of his solo projects quite work for me. His designs have lead to other games which are among my favourites, even if his name is missing from them.

Read some reviews, looked at the pics of the components, immediately thought:

"Man, my daughter is going to love this! Those sheep sculpts are amazing, the game looks like it has a lot of humor and should be great as a gateway/family game."

Ordered it from a FLGS, got it and read the rules.

Discovered that it was an abstract with lots of really fiddly rules, pretty much exactly the opposite of what I was expecting it to be.

Still have the game and some components. I did get one thing right - my daughter loves the sheep, so I let her play with them and make up her own games, pretty much all of which are much more fun than the actual rules to this game.
