Once again I ran the Finnish Players' Picks voting. Every game is eligible, even the old ones, as long as people vote for games they have actually played during the year. Each voter can choose seven different games and must choose at least five.

The number of voters was slightly reduced from last year, instead of 144 we had 135. Those voters gave 855 votes to a large amount of different games. See the complete results at http://www.lautapelaaja.net/aanestystulokset08.html

39 votes. Of course. This year it was definitely a new game on the top, it was just a question of whether it was this one or the one that ended up second... Agricola is popular in Finland, many people have played the German version thanks to the translations available (English or Finnish).

16 votes. Imperial is very popular, too, and I expect this will remain. I wouldn't be surprised if Imperial eventually made it to the overall top-10. Of course, now that I say it the game disappears next year, but still, it's a well-liked game.

12 votes. Ticket to Ride had its peak and has since dropped down. Still, 12 votes is a respectable score for such an entry-level game (I know it can be played quite seriously, but I also know that serious players in Finland play other games).

I suppose the popularity can also be explained by the fact that shunting tiny racers around a twisting track is second nature to any full-blooded Finn... we used to hijack the kids' sandbox for hours at a time to run our races.

As an added bonus, PitchCar can be played all year round, and on a comfortably elevated surface (oh, my aching back).

I'm looking forward to see how Modern Art does in the next vote. Winning the Finnish Game of the Year in adult category was huge but I have to say it was a surprise to me. MA is a great and entertaining game and the Finnish version is cool but I have my doubts when it comes to attracting the larger gaming audience. It's too heavy for casual gamers and too light for those who play more games.

How Finnish do you have to be to vote in your survey?

My father was born while our family was immigrating to the US so I am a first and a half generation Finn.

Besides, your list is badly in need of a wargaming boost.

Soittakaa poliisi!

You don't actually even have to be Finnish, just live in Finland and follow either my blog, Lautapelaaja.net or the Finnish Board Game Society forums.

Highest-ranking war games were Combat Commander: Europe and EastFront 2 with 3 votes and ASL, Here I Stand, Napoleon's Triumph, and Paths of Glory with 2 votes.
