My buddies and I have found this to be a game that we play over and over again. It is a lot of fun for a quick two hour war game.....in fact it has taken the place of We the People.

The award winning game from Columbia. It is the ground breaking merge of cards & blocks. My love for the American Revolution keeps this from my top spot.

I own and like this game, BUT, I find that it does not really use either the card driven game mechanism or the block game mechanism to their full potential. One of the great things about using blocks is the fog of war provided by not knowing what unit is where at and what strength it is. However, in HOTS, because most troops always return home for the winter, there really isn't much fog of war. I rarely find myself wondering what troops are in a given area, or wondering what the probable strength is. Also, the cards could have been done much better. The cards in HOTS are one dimensional. In a truly great game like Hannibal: Rome vs. Carthage, the cards have multiple uses and every turn sees difficult decisions and trade-offs being made in deciding whether to use the card to move an army, invoke a political or historical event, or politically influence a province. I can't wait to get my hands on a block game that uses both mechanisms to their full potential. I'd be in heaven.

Gregory,

I believe that Hellas will have dual uses of events and ops with the block game. I am definetly pumped about that one.

The block game that introduced me to Columbia Games. It is a good game with varying strategies that can be played in a couple of hours. Truly a classic!

I prefer this game to Victory of the Pacific. The only problem that I have is viable winning options for the Japanese player.

The AH classic that got me playing block games. It is a fun game that can be played fairly quickly with the fog of war. I haven't played the CG version though.

I liked it though most of the scenarios are a little unbalanced. I would like to seesome more specific cards with spells for the individual wizards/leaders blocks.

I have this one and it was ok. I prefer Europe Engulfed and never moved on to the other Front series games.

Perhaps the best part of this game is Spanish Civil War scenario, which is well thought out and presented - one of the few games on this subject.

I am usually a big fan of all ACW games. This one didnt do it for me though. Good thing I have played Quebec or it would be on the bottom.

What about Settlers of Catan - The Card Game? It has two blocks, one for the biggest army and one for the biggest trade power...:D

East Front.....don't have it....played MedFront and decided to pass on the rest of the Front games.

Diplomacy could be on the list as it used blocks first....I do like Settlers though.

The old Diplomacy (the version I have) uses plain blocks as armies and navies (just differently shaped blocks), but it's not a block game in the same sense any of the Columbia games are. Bit of a stretch, I'd say! :p
