I'm slowly making the transition from Non-Gamer to Gamer. A few months ago, if anyone had asked me "name a board/card game", what would I have been able to think of?

Many of the games on the list are children's games, probably because many of the things I like are erroneously thought of as degenerate by people who don't understand or appreciate the field, such as comics and animation.

Not long ago I would have thouht that a Eurogame would be European Monopoly and I wouldn't have had a clue what a meeple was!

So, anyway, on with the list! I've tried to suggest "Gamer" alternatives from what I've learned in my limited research and would appreciate any other suggestions.

Or something much simpler than Acquire, how about For Sale? It's sticking with theme, and is a great filler. You could easily play it a few times in the amount of time it takes to play a regular game of Monopoly.

Or Rail Baron. Sure, it doesn't *look* like Monopoly, but it is similar in many ways: you buy specific "properties," and collect "rent" when other players use them.

I am inclined to agree, but I also think that Monopoly is just fine as a 'gamers game' as well ...

Best Gamer Alternative for Monopoly would be the Monopoly Deal Card Game.

It has Monopoly's theme, is way more fun, and only takes about 15 minutes to play.

I wouldnt say alternative -- but variant -- Chutes and Ladders the Drinking game. Take a shot every time you go down the chute. Works like a charm Though I have a nasty habit of getting stuck on one chute repeatedly until my friends take pity on my and rig the spinner.

What can I say -- my non gamer writer type friends don't like my other games. I have tried. So we play chutes and ladders. and Fact or Crap. :shudder: gulp

Betrayal at House on the Hill doesn't really work here because you're not deducing anything, you're just wandering around until you KNOW who the bad guy is.

A twisted alternative would be Kill Doctor Lucky, but I agree with Jarred on Mystery of the Abbey. You could also try Scotland Yard, The Name of the Rose, Garibaldi: La Trafila, or Mr. Jack.

Yinsh is a great deal heavier than connect four! I would recommend that old Knizia classic that was recently republished by Steffen Spiele: Tiku. It is a very nice light abstract.

But so is Connect Four. There's really no need to replace it unless you want variation.

I think fits the bill nicely. Not really a Gamer's game but enjoyed by more gamers than Mouse Trap.

You're killing things, and you get to use cool plastic props to do it

Timewellspent got some in recently but they're already sold out again.
Go to the animal upon animal page at timewellspent and click on email notification.

It really works and I got some of my rarer items by doing it.

Try German Boardgame Company, it's in stock right now. I've ordered a few things from there. I don't know how this Canadian company compares to some based in the USA.

I've tried to find a good alternative to Risk, and don't think Axis & Allies is really it, as it's best as a 2-player game.

I created a GeekList on the subject of finding a Risk Replacement and here are some of the listed suggestions:

Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition
Risk (Revised Edition)
Condottiere
Nexus Ops
Twilight Imperium (third edition)
Viktory II
Conquest of the Empire
El Grande

All of these are games, so how are they not for gamers?

Not a bad list of non-gamer games -
except in America, these games are hardly even known at all:

Ker Plunk
Buckaroo
Snap
Top Trumps

For USA, obvious ones to substitute for them would be

Bridge
Boggle
party games - perhaps Scattergories, Cranium, or Taboo

That's really interesting. Yes, my list is very biased towards games played in the UK since that's where I'm from.
Top Trumps is absolutely massive here. You can buy sets on anything from Tanks to Marvel Heroes to football (soccer) teams to almost anything you can imagine.
I used to make my own out of cereal boxes as a kid to play in the playground, and recently knocked-up some custome made packs about characters from Hayao Miyazaki's films and Gerry Anderson's UFO if anybody's interested.

I think another obvious choice that should belong on this list is Stratego, for which the gamer's alternative would be Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation (although Stratego still holds up pretty well as a gamer's game).

Another favorite of mine has always been Mastermind, for which the gamer's alternative would be... ??
