~Update~
November 2011

Finally! This has been our dream for years and now it's here!

~Update~
October 2010

Some new games that were all over the room, so time for a little cleaning.

~Update~
August 2009

Less room now, but I kinda like them sideways. And more games are moved upstairs...

~Update~
November 2008

Update! Not the best quality, but the wetter is bad these days. One game missing: Revolution is set up upstairs. The Catan games had to go after Essen and are in the Room Full of Stuff with the other NotSoGreat / NotMuchPlayed Games

February 2008

I really should update this picture, but I'm also thinking about reorganizing the whole closet. I can't get any more shelves of the closet right now; initially it was supposed to be books only. So quite a few games moved upstairs now. According to my BGG Profile I own 171 games & expansions.

November 2006:

Tikal:

I choose Tikal, because it was My First Real Boardgame. It's the game that started my addiction hobby.

You can see The Queen's Gambit in the lower half of this picture, and it's a freakin' awesome game, so that's why I picked it.

I also want to point out a shelf that I have in my game room. I saw it at Ikea, and knew immediately that it would be perfect for the Kosmos big-box boxes:

Compared to many of you here at BGG, I am fairly new to the hobby. I discovered Settlers of Catan on Xbox Live last year and fell in love with it. I bought a copy of the game at Gen Con '07, and our evenings in the hotel were spent playing Settlers. Gen Con '08 was largely spent playing demos of various board games, and we spent our evenings doing some board gamin' again.

Since August I've been trading in leftovers my old Magic the Gathering collection to build my new board game empire. My wife and I game after putting our daughter to bed 3 or 4 nights a week, and I've been having friends over for game days once or twice a month.

I've been taking a picture of my gaming shelves/collection once a month since, as sort of a nerd documentary.

This is the collection in August after my Gen Con 08 purchases. I brought home (among others) Gangster, Cities and Knights, and Carcassonne: The Discovery.

September 08. The old wholly inadequate shelf is upgraded to a much less inadequate one. Arkham Horror and Puerto Rico have been added to the collection. Arkham Horror is the first game I purchased without ever seeing it played. Not coincidentally, I also found BGG this month.

October 08 after I discovered that I can trade my old Magic cards for credit at CoolStuffInc. After much research here, these were added: El Grande, Power Grid, Ticket to Ride (and Switzerland,) Last Night on Earth, Agricola and Citadels among others. Also pictured: my daughter who goes right for the Rock Band drum kit as soon as she enters the room.

November 08. My current setup. My parents brought me a second shelf, and more trading resulted in Thurn and Taxis, Fury of Dracula, Mr Jack, Carcassonne and more.

I chose Settlers as it was the game that started me on the hobby.

I envy those people who can display their games neatly and together in one place - i.e. Shelf Art rather than Shelf Gr0t. Me, I lack the room. Hence the title chosen for this entry in the list (though, unaccountably, one which doesn't feature in my current collection).

Most of my Eurogames are in a metal shelving unit in the living room, displayed proudly for the world to see:

However, the bottom part of the rack and adjacent floor-standing piles are usually hidden behind a footstool. That's been removed for this picture, since I guess my fellow geeks are more interested in the games than the soft furnishings:

There are more games in the storeroom, ones either newly-acquired, or which just didn't fit into the rack:

And yet more, including some family games, older games and jigsaws, atop a bedroom wardrobe:

While in the same room is a box of (mostly) card games in want of shelving:

Finally, the ones that got left behind. This is the stash at my parents' house, some of which date back to my boyhood:

(Edited 2008-12-31 to add the final two photos.)

This was one of the earlier games that sealed my conversion to German games. Back then, you couldn't get US editions, only imports, direct from Adam Spielt, or a trip into central London to Just Games.

And now, on with the pr0n...

New readers can jump to my thread with video.

This is the front room after I successfully remodelled it. The back room also has tons of excellent games, it is the game room infact, but the pr0n isn't so good. There's another room upstairs with a lot more, and shelves around the house too.

These are the shelves in my game room. The photos don't do it justice, it's quite a beautiful room.

Kids Games and Ameritrash

Abstracts and Word Games

Euros

Over time I have been accumulating more Euros and fewer kids' games, so now Runebound and Arkham Horror have moved to the Ameritrash shelf, and the Ticket to Rides have moved down. In the second image on the left you can just see into my study where the Carrom boards, Crokinole board and Go board are on the floor. There's also another small shelf with the Settlers treasure chest and some wooden games. The drawers under the shelves contain big games such as Heroscape, the C&C series, and some trashy old games and the trade pile.

I chose "I Don't Know, What Do You Want to Play?" because that's the question this room inspires.

My collection as of November 2008

Merchant of Venus

I choose Merchant of Venus since I've always been a Sci Fi fan and its one of my favorite games. I never knew about it until a few years ago when I stumbled across it here on BGG. I knew I had to have a copy so I watched eBay for several months waiting for an unpunched copy to show up. My patience won out and I got a beautiful pristine copy for about $100. I spent the next week punching and reading to get the rules and game down for our next gaming session. I was nervous that my friends wouldn't like it and I'd blown $100 for nothing. But luckily they loved it and we played it again the following week!

My collection

Last Christmas I bought the 2 half height shelves since I was totally out of room. So over the last year I went wild buying new games. Currently have 160 entries based on my BGG collection listing. If you look closely at the Enterprise print you can see BGG on my computer monitor reflected in the glass!

Sadly you can't see my copy of Merchant of Venus since it his hidden by Risk 2210 A.D.

I occasionally beat this mess back into some semblance of order but it just takes a couple sessions (and a UPS delivery or two) to unleash the forces of entropy once more.

Here's the main wall:

A pillar shelf unit that divides the room; there are slide-away trays built in to allow for storing games week to week:

That's all neat and tidy but every corner looks something like this:

The gaming table itself:

This end of the room holds mainly books but it serves as a playing area as well:

I built the place about ten years ago and it sees anywhere from six to twelve gamers every Tuesday night. It's holding up well to all the traffic but I think I'm going to have to cull the game herd at some point!

2008

Here is my collection so far. 134 games. I've had a lot of fun with my obsession with board games. Always looking for a new favorite. I love games I can introduce to friends. Most of my friends are not gamers, so it's up to me to do my research. Which includes being the one to read the rule books and explain everything to the new gamers.

Hive has been a great game in my collection. It is easy to take with you almost anywhere. I've brought it with me to outdoor events, parties, and traveling on vacation. It's easy to teach new people and introduce them to gaming. I've roped in a few friends by playing Hive with them. It doesn't need a board. I've played in the sand, next to a hot tub on wet cement, on a sloping hill, and grassy parks. Wind is not a factor. These pieces aren't going anywhere. Hive is a great, easy to learn, fun to play, with great replay value. One of my top 10 games.

Thanks for checking out my collection!

It's not as impressive a collection as some and there are some games missing from the picture.

I chose Age III as it's one of the games that's AWOL from this photograph, others missing include Warhammer Quest, Betrayal at House on the Hill, Elfball, Merchant of Venus, Necromunda and Bang! (which is technically in the picture but concealed behind that red deck box.)

Also present in this picture is some RPG pr0n, specifically Call of Cthulhu, a complete set of 7th Sea (my pride and joy), Deadlands, WFRP (both versions), Dark Heresy, Judge Dredd, Mutants & Masterminds and World of Necroscope. There is also some normal book pr0n, cd pr0n and soft toy pr0n (Where's Cthulhu?).

Sadly I don't have a lot of space in my place so I have to make do with what I can.

Stop poking me! Ow! I mean it! That hurts!

I picked this game because much of my shelving is currently loaded up with several years' worth of thrift store rescues that I just know I'll get around to eBaying eventually... The image is because I took it and, well, this is about game shrines, right?

There are a few other games hiding in the other half of the gameroom, so we'll start with them first.

This is the main half of the room, with a couple of games kicking about. I'll have to update the shots as several new games (including Essen haul) have since entered the collection. I had to buy a new shelf - that's not even in this pic.

The main wall - note the bottom shelf is missing.

The 'other' half of the room, i.e. the Realm of the Thrifts:

I'll update the entry when I finish uploading pics of the revised shelves.

My entire collection still fits on a closet shelf! Woohoo!

I chose Lexio as my representative game because it is both fun and a great reminder of the year I spent in Korea.
