For a long time there was a real shortage of great Space games. There was even a geeklist titled "Where are all the good Space games?" or something like that.

Its been a stunning couple of years for Space games with a lot of really great games being released. In 2007 & 2008 we have had:

Race for the Galaxy
Battlestar Galactica
Space Alert
Galactic Emperor
Supernova
Galaxy Trucker
Warhammer 40,000 5th Edition
StarCraft: The Board Game
Planet Steam
Frontiers
Duck Dealer

I created a poll a few weeks ago to rate Space & Sci-fi games. Since then I realised its really Space games that I'm interested in.

So this list contains the best Space games I could find on BGG. In some cases it was tough to decide whether a game was 'Space' or 'Sci-fi', and I may have got some of them wrong, especially the large number of entries that I haven't played. If you think I've missed a great Space game then feel free to add it.

I've added some useful information on game: best number of players, how popular they are (number of plays), whether they are Free, what their majority rating was on the Poll (with in brackets the % who said that).
I've also included a comment (or two) from a fan of the game. It was interesting to see the number of unfamiliar usernames writing these comments - obviously Space game fans are a niche group on The Geek.

Update: I've included some more detail on the poll results to date.
Poll rating is the average score if Love it=2, Great=1, Okay=0, Poor=-1, Hate it=-2.
Median is what the middle person rated it as.
Love it! is the percentage who ticked "Love it!"

Update: Now this list has settled down I have created a "Weird combined rating" to sort the list by and have re-sorted by this.
The way it works is points are awarded for 4 categories: Rating, Ranking, #Plays and Poll score. The points are awarded based on where that game comes after sorting all the games on this list by each of those scores. Finally a bonus will be awarded for Print n Play games (as they are freely available and cheap). Low points are good and the games will then be sorted by their TOTAL points. You'll get the idea. Where no score is available (e.g. no rank or no poll rating) ratings will be used.
If any new games are added to the list I will score them relative to the other games on the list and sort them on that basis.

Other lists in this series:
The Best Co-operative Games
The Best Alternatives to "Risk"
The Best Party Games
The Best Dexterity Games (or 48 dexterity games that are better than Jenga)

And my full reference geeklist for choosing games:

wlam: "Played lots of times (with 2 to 4 players - or 5 with a prototype of an expansion). As a fan of San Juan, a former Magic player, and an occasional SF reader, I suppose that I am one of the main targets for this game. The simultaneous action selection makes a large difference with San Juan, although of course one still wants to benefit as much as possible from other players' actions. There is a fair number of strategies, or rather bits of strategies which have to be combined (depending of course on your card draws) in order to win the game. Replayability is very good, and scalability as well (the advanced variant for 2 players adding some more subtlety). Additionally, the artwork is great, which is certainly not needed to make a great game, but definitely doesn't hurt."

Jarvis: The only game I scored a 10 with. It has its flaws, but this is the only game I will play anywhere, anytime, but not with just anybody. The true Board Game Geek item that can go for 4 hours and end in a tie. (well not really as I forced the other players to find the tiebreaker in the rules to give me the win)
The complete free range of opportunities afforded by this game makes it my all-time favorite. You just have to realize that not every race plays the same way. You have to change your style depending on your opening draw. But even races I hated at first I grew to love if they are played right.

Habermanm: "Board game crack.
Much more control than some give it credit for. Every attack can be prevented with proper ship building, and there is definitely room to keep getting better. If you get your ship blown apart it's probably your own fault, though you can also luck out and sneak a crappy ship through. I expect as we keep playing, scores will continue to rise.
EXCELLENT rules, theming, and components, all with a sense of humor. Great fun, and absolutely highly recommended if you like speed games, puzzle games, factory fun, or just plain fun.
It's not too long by any means. The last game we played, we extended the game even longer with the 3a ship."

Aristophanes: "Wow!
Dune has it all. Bluffing. Risk. Alliances, Traitors. Sacrifice. Leadership. Bidding.
Few games ever made have had as many positive attributes as Dune has. Sure, by today's standards it is overly long and some of the rules (BG co-existence) are laborious, but once players have mastered the rules, the game has more dimension and tension than almost anything on the market today.
Key to play are bidding, bluffing and collection. Players bid for cards that allow them to perform various functions in the game or, more importantly, triumph in battles. You bid to risk your wealth acquiring the tools to triumph...or not!
Conflict resolution is a bluffing system unlike any other game. Leaders make the difference but each player secretly allocates how many precious troops they are willing to sacrifice. Too few and they lose the battle and all is lost anyway. Too many and the victory is Pyrhhic in that other factions will exploit your depleted position. Leadership most often makes the difference in battles, but beware traitors.
The economics of the game revolve around the collection of spice from the surface. Too little collection and everyone is poor and desperate. Too much and some factions (Emperor, Harkonnen) become overly powerful.
Dune is a game of balance and subtgerfuge.
The theme is so much in line with the books that you really take on the mechanics of a faction as if you were the fictional characters.
The real standout of the design is the assymetrical structure of the factions. Some factions are far better than others, but often it depends when in the game: beginning, middle or end. The ebb and flow of power really is like sand dunes shifting. Sweet victories come from sacrifice and risk, but mostly from just simple outmaneuvering and outthinking your opponents.
I don't reccomend the Spice Harvest expansion. The Duel expansion is better but the one-on-one fighting is boring. You can opt out of that portion and simply use the leaders and new cards/rules to enhance the basic game.
Last point: No game in this database deserves a remake like this one."

The Barefoot Killer: "It has a great sci-fi setting, a foreboding atmosphere, well-differentiated characters that are true to the show, a cohesive narrative, and, refreshingly for an FFG game, it's a fairly simple design that's easy to learn and teach.
I've liked Konieczka's previous designs that I've played, but often with some reservations. He absolutely nailed this one out of the park. An instant favourite."

shawn_low: "Battlestations in COOP mode!!
This game is a crazy hoot to play. The setting: a spaceship that is scanning the area that it has warped into. Players listen to a series of prerecorded alert sounds that trigger off events. They then program a hand of cards (ala roborally) in order to deal with the threats. This includes moving around, firing weapons, powering weapons etc.
Once the 10 minute soundtrack finishes, players then resolve all the threats and programmed cards. This is where the fun begins. Erroneous and uncoordinated programming, ship damage etc all add to the tension and agony as players see if they manage to survive the threats.
Great looking components. Fairly easy turn structure. Quickish game. Lots of replaybility. Pity it's so hard to find in English! CZG had a hit with Galaxy Trucker last year and they someone manage to top that this year! Well done."

martybgsj: "After 10 plays this game is incredible. It has all the stuff I like - A theme that fits, a variable setup, too much to learn quickly. I love playing a game that I have to 'discover' as I go. For instance, the same race on the same starting planet may have to played totally different since the other planets and races will change. The components are worth the price of admission - great minis, very durable cards, and big planets that fit everything they need to without being cumbersome. A minor quibble is the organization of the rulebook is not intuitive (for me) and the index very incomplete (a good start, though!). I doubt I will tire of this game soon and I know there will be expansions coming to spice it up even more. This is a 10 in my book.

This is the most addictive boardgame I can recall playing. Just one more... just one more... Reminds me of Magic the Gathering without cost too much $$$

And for those FFG haters - the game came with a broken piece that was promptly replace (so there, nyah!)"

crackedlcd81: "Derivative or not, NEXUS OPS is one of the absolute best American games of the past decade. When it first came out I gave the game an 8 and over the past couple of years it's slowly increased in stature and now I can't imagine not awarding this masterpiece of efficient yet exciting design full marks. Sure, it's basically a distillation of ideas from RISK, AXIS & ALLIES, and even to some degree TWILIGHT IMPERIUM but the balance between economy of rules, easy and accessible playtime, and full-tilt theming that doesn't skimp on direct player interaction and conflict add up to a tremendous game that really should have been the beginning of a system rather than a TANGA cast-off. The mission system has never worked better than in this game and it manages to single-handedly solve a lot of problems that this type of game has typically experienced. Expansions (such as additional players, assymetrical player powers, and more terrain/units would have put this game so far over the top it's not funny. Some games lose their lustre over time, others you get tired of, but Nexus Ops has what it takes to stick around and I think it'll be with us for some time to come."

Even in extremely unbalanced games, there's a real delight in thinking up a good move. Expansions -- all the powers, lucre and the extra cards are good (including kickers). Flares, moons, and reverse hexes aren't necessary, but can add a bit of flavour."

ynnen: "The Mayfair version, without the $#%@ lucre expansion rules, remains my Favorite Game of All Time... depth, options, variety, replay... it's all in there. And lots of backstabbing, to boot! The Hasbro/AH version is an inferior, lackluster offering, and rates a lowly 4/10 -- nice production quality, but limited 4 player games, 1/2 the alien powers, no flares and lack of reverse cone (and other rules) detracts from the game."

m_r_tyler: "Merchant of Venus is a race to acquire a net worth of $2,000 by finding lucrative trade routes among alien cultures. You pilot a spaceship with a couple of cargo holds for transporting valuables such as 'Space Spice' or 'Rock Videos' from one planet to the next. You make money by buying goods at a low price from one culture and selling them for a profit to another culture. The game features 14 cultures (each on their own planet). The tricky part is that your newly acquired goods can only be sold at a few other locations. For example, goods purchased from culture #1 can only be sold to cultures #2-4. And to really make things interesting, at the start of the game all cultures are randomly distributed facedown. So early exploration just to find a good trade route is key.
There are plenty of strategic decisions to be made such as whether or not to upgrade your ship, build factories or spaceports, search for valuable relics, attempt to take the shortcut through the clouds, etc. There is also a fair amount of luck since your ship is fueled by die roll. The strategy vs. luck factor is well balanced to the point that an experienced player should beat a rookie, but if enough breaks fall just right, a lucky player could pull off an upset.
The game plays well with 1-4 players. More than four tends to bog down as player turns take longer and longer as the game progresses and decision trees grow. To speed things up, I provide each player with their own set of dice and a box lid to roll them into (throwing the dice on the game board could be disasterous).
Be cautioned that this game takes 15+ minutes to set up so a good host will take care of that before the guests arrive. Playing time ranges from 90 minutes to three hours but you can tailor that to your group's needs by adjusting the victory conditions between $1,000 to $4,000. My favorite is to play to $3,000 as it makes the slow freighter worth consideration. Our group also likes to sweeten the '?' markers with all the relics, telegates, and few penalty markers. Don't bother with the combat version of nova balls and lasers, as this plays best as an economic race, not a wargame."

Flows smoothly, with little to no rule problems; excellent and concise rule book; Game can get stalled on occasion (Naboo player captures palace while Trade Fed player captures battlefield turns into a bit of a waiting game) but almost ALL games seem to come down to just the last second. Worth seeking out."

wunoke: "This must be one of the best implementations of theme in a game ever. The game plays out with the feel and events of the movie, but with the possibility of an alternate ending that is not only believable but quite fun to play out. Darth Maul taking care of business with both of the Jedi and then cleaning out the palace single handedly, sorry Mike. That damn shaky palace is a bit of a headache but still can't topple this game from being a 10."

smithnewz: "One of my all-time favourites. Real depth of strategy, it combines wargame and resource utilisation in a way that was years ahead of its time (and a forerunner to all the Command & Conquer-type computer games). And yet the rules are simple and elegant. Varied terrain, and even that changes with the tides! Nice metal miniatures (but they're better when painted IMHO - see picture). Way OOP, and totally stupid prices to buy one - but probably still worth it."

willdesigns: "We love Settlers of Catan the Card Game. We play it every single day with the expansions. Eventhought this game has the same system it is different enough to say we found a second great game to play everyday or take turns
The system is very much like the SOCCG but you have to explore sectors of the space, fight pirates, TRADE A LOT and build a better ship. You have to quest for the galactic council and establish trade and commerce posts. It's very refreshing to see they just didn't change the theme and kept the system but made a whole new game with a very solid system. A must for anybody."

BradyLS: "This is an excellent "movie skirmish" game set in the Star Wars Universe. Play is quick, the rules easy to learn, the pieces excellent, and the maps thematic.
The robust rules can easily take on house rules and some tweaking. The pieces and theme encourage collectors to do something with their action figures other than let them sit on the shelf.
Thanks to the scale, it's a fairly simple matter for inspired players to make their own maps and scrounge figs from old RPGs (or adapt exisiting ones from the original game and The Queen's Gambit) to expand the number of characters and locales to play with."

The Aliens come out of the walls and make for a tense game. Hicks, Vasquez, Drake, and Apone really rock. Playing this game with the 25mm lead miniatures from Leading Edge Games makes it an even better experience."

PopeBrain: "(25+ plays) This is my favorite game because it has plenty of strategic depth, a great theme, and I can play it with anyone. There is less luck involved than Settlers because of the number of options/choices available. In 3 and 4 player games, we play with the house rule that the Trade Partner bonus is only worth one point. We found that any player that happened to build/receive the first 3 trade ships would storm to victory. This is common, because you either have good numbers on the exact 3 right planets or not. With this rule, the Red Missions, Trade Ships, Colony Planets, and Fame Points are all equally balanced paths to victory, but it does add some time to the game."

Thrylos: "Mix Citadels with Twilight Imperium and you get a better game than both of them. It is simple, it has nice components (dreadnoughts are impressive), it is well balanced (I was surprised with this since there 7 roles and plenty of different strategies). It is a great game that will please gamers looking for something along the lines of Twilight Imperium that ends in 2 hours. The game is unique on its own way, I am just using Citadels and Twilight Imperium to indicate what to expect). There is a lot of tension up to the end. Be prepared the first time that you will play it to spend 3-4 hours (6-payers) since you need to explain the roles, etc, but if all players know the game then a 4 player game can be finished easily in 2 hours."

sos1: "Clean system, easy enough to understand and with minimal record keeping to control many space ships, and yet still return "realistic" results. (It *is* a science fiction game, so I'm not sure what "realistic" would really mean, but I mean the vector-based movement "feels" like spaceships should feel, unlike something like Silent Death, which feels like tanks moving in the desert.) See my review."

dodonna: "Fixes the flaws of the original "Risk" by imposing a five-turn limit and doing away with the massive army build-up. Some of the card effects are a bit random, but I find that aspect appealing. The sea zones open up the traditional world map, and the moon adds more options for would-be conquerers."

The Hutt's play a large role in the outcome in this than in the first version we played. It works a lot better, making the 3rd player have a more important role in the outcome."

cheeseontoast: "Awesome! Very similar to the Starship Troopers miniatures game (except they are pre-painted figures) but the rules are certainly not as complicated. Dead easy to learn as the rules book gives you six scenarios to work thru with each one adding a little bit more of the rules. Fantastic! And as stated above, they are pre-painted! Also, it isnt collectable such as Star Wars miniatures so you wont have to spend hundreds of pounds - just buy the forces you want (of couse, after the inital set) and youre away.As a note I got mine from www.zonzab.co.uk, good price and quick delivery."

Ogma: "LONG time admirer (from afar) of Star Fleet Battles, but because of that game's complexity, I never took the plunge. Federation Commander is EXACTLY the game (in the Star Fleet Universe) that I've wanted since I was 10 (when SFB was released). Easy-to-understand rules, terrific game play (this game is just dang fun) and it all looks great to boot. Of course now I'm addicted to the minis and that's another reason I'm so pleased with the game! I hadn't painted a miniature in well over 10 years and now I'm painting ships for FC almost every day! Thank you Amarillo Design Bureau!"
