This is a list of as many games designed by Martin Wallace (my favorite game designer!) as I can find. The order is according to 1) their BGG ranking; and 2) their BGG rating. I will attempt to update this from time to time.

This man it's great and has a very good heart, too.
A month ago, or maybe a little more, I wrote to tell them about a charity campaign that is carried in my country (Chile), which helps children with disabilities (Teleton) and ask him if he wanted to participate by donating any prize for a Game parallel event to be carried out to collect funds for the campaign.
Without hesitation he sent one of his last Games (After the Flood).
The event turned out very well and the prize was gave to the happy fortunate who participate in the demo of one of the games of Wallace that we call Wallaton.

For those who haven't played it, this really isn't a train game in the strictest sense of the term. It is however brilliant and fully deserves to be ranked second only to AoS as a Wallace design.

In no way is it a train game.

It is a game of production, supply, demand and economics.

Agreed. And I think this game's mechanics present all three in a very clever way. Love playing this, have a hard time finding opponents though

As much as I like Brass, it's neither a train game, nor a game of supply, demand and economics. Like most other euros, it is for the most part a game that plays according to the designer's abstracted mechanics that often defy economic intuition and reality. I'm hoping though that this situation would change with MW's next economic game, Automobile.

For me, this game did not click and I have to say it's my candidate for Wallace's most overrated game here on BGG. Played once and have no great desire to play it again. I found the game mechanics to be overwrought, clunky, strategy a bit unclear, as opposed to my favorite from this list, the very elegantly simple and logical and well-themed mechanics of Automobile. The two things I recall that I particularly didn't like: (1) having to decide on discarding a card from a city that could later be reopened and available based on someone else's play and (2) the "development" action that had you discard two tiles just to get to something more efficient -- why not just eliminate the action entirely? So, based on these issues and concerns, I found Brass to be a relatively poor design. Will be interesting to see how the recently-announced Age of Industry compares.

In regards to the Standard Game, I like the City Growth mechanism much better than the old Production. I like having to choose between VP and Income. I like having to pay for the more powerful jobs.

Don't like the double-sided complex/town tiles. Not a killer, but pesky.

In general, I am enjoying the new version quite a bit and I'm able to get new people to play it because it's pretty.

I'm loving Steam, but I do agree with the folks who feel that there are too many "great" roles so the auction is not as important. Too easy to skip being in the top 2 in the aution and still pick up a nice role in the third spot.

I bought this, along with the subsequent Steam Barons as well as the similar Railways of England/Railways of the World newer version of RR Tycoon after previously obtaining the original Age of Steam and Eagle Games' original RR Tycoon. The problem now is the with the proliferation of all these derivative games all of which have similar mechanics, pick and delivery, stock market aspects, etc. which variants sometimes within each game (as is the case with Steam), is keeping track of which game is which. Unfortunately, this has got me to the point where I am not sure whether I want to play any of them, although many of the games are quite good.

Well you could play this withh negotiation, but your likely to find it just devolves into optimisation anyway. If a move is not in a player's interest he generally won't do it. Well I wouldn't anyway.

Would you consider moving for 4pts instead of 5 a benefit if i were threatening to ride a 3rd players rails? or making an agreement with him that we would share points when possible for the entire game?

I think it is too 'heavy' to really be a Euro-game. Also there is the chance of player elimination which also seems foreign to Euro-games.

Is it really a Euro?

I don't see where your negotiation is; I still go for maximum points while you share yours with another player? Where's the threat?

If there is a threat, I alleviate it by shipping your cube for you - at minimum profit to you. That's why it will always devolve into optimisation - players simply work around your threats/bribes/deals.

Well, if one feels compelled (as some do) to divide everything in to "Euro" and "Ameri-christ-let's-not-start-this-argument-again", then it definitely falls on the "Euro" side of the fence.

RRT is a pretty good game, but a major problem is that it does not allow for a sufficient number of strategy options. As mentioned by a few people here, a considerable portion of the large map is usually untouched because there is no viable strategy to build your railroad empire there. Another problem is that the game over-penalises issuing of shares. You have to repay $1000 every turn for every $5000 issued: which company pays 20% dividends?? What makes this worse is that borrowers are further penalised with VP deductions at the end of the game. Further, a player may earn bonus VPs for issuing the least shares. These combine to make an agressive borrowing and expansion-for-the-long-term strategy unviable. Strategy simplifies to a simple "try your best not to issue shares, only do so if there are clear tangible benefits to doing so". Euro gamers may like this, but as an economist by training, I would prefer to explore different corporate strategies in an economic game.

Very good game. I've played it once, in a group of six with much gaming experience but little experience with this game. We all enjoyed it. The final score was VERY euro. There was a three-way tie for first at something like 57 points, I was fourth, ONE point behind, and fifth was one or two behind me (he lost big time on unrest at the end), and sixth was maybe four behind fifth.

This game bridges the wargame/Ameritrash game and the area control/euro game, with die rolling that usually doesn't make a lot of difference but makes the wargamers happy. The game is actually simple in concept, but has a lot of tiles to choose from as an action that spices the game up, and always gives you that feeling that "I'd have won if I'd just done THIS thing!"

That's a good thing.

Wallace's best game ever and best new game of the past year or two, IMHO. It did get voted into this year's WBC as a new "trial" event (along with Brass), hope everyone coming brings a copy, given the recent sad news that the US-based Mayfair/Phalanx edition is being delayed even further, sad news indeed for a game that is heavily themed based on the early years of the US automotive industry.

That, as always depends on what you find "fun". Most of the "light, fun" game I have tried I found dull, repetative and boring.

Age of Steam on the other hand never fails to keep me on the edge of my seat, fully engaged and giggling with delight.

This is a game I'd love to have, but not at the $59.99 price tag. Cut that price in half (that's really about what it's worth) and I'm in.

Ditto. This is the only Treefrog game I don't have, and I'd love to have it to complete the series...but it has too much luck to justify paying $70 for it

Well as there is no description given, I'll write something.

This is as good as a game of intrigue and influence gets; players represent powerful Italian families of mercenaries (condotierre) who spread their influence about the major cities in the country by investing in them and fighting on their behalf.

The key to victory is getting other players to do what you want without them even realising it. A game sorely in need of a reprint if ever there was one.

I myself won't play Liberte without the Dagger variant, which in my opinion solves the problem beautifully.

But are you still playing the game? Same goes for Babel.

No, I'm not, but I would (with the variant) if someone wanted to play it. The game's lack of table time is due to our love of the new and the tendency for games which are merely "very good" to get shunted aside, not because we're allergic to house rules. In this particular case, the Dagger variant got almost universal acceptance, since the game clearly didn't work without it.

As for Babel, I assume you're asking about it because I like to play with the Aleknevicus variant. When I was playing two-player games regularly at lunch at work, this got played a lot. That situation is no longer available and I don't get many other opportunities for two-player gaming, so I haven't played it much recently. But I'd play it in a heartbeat if I could--it's one of my favorite two-player games. In this case, the game is good enough to play with the rules in the box; I just think it's better with Greg's variant.

Very thematic game with some fairly unique scoring options that was unfortunately marred by some color-matching problems, plus those brown and purple tokens that look so much alike that made the game virtually impossible to play with a full table of six (similar problems with the colors used in StrataMax's recent reprint of Tammany Hall). Of course, if Valley Games is doing the reprint, there's similar cause for concern given how badly screwed up the color of the components in Container were.

Too bad, it's sad how a really fine game can be pulled down by poor component manufacturing.

Have to say I bought this one without trying it first or even really reading through the rules and was really disappointed. The one innovative mechanism, the mirror action turn, didn't really work for me and seemed artificial. Also felt, as with Brass but unlike Automobile, that the game mechanisms didn't really reflect the theme very well. Hate to say this, but I am using the nice wooden bits from this game with a print and play cycling game (2 Wheels) I downloaded here on the Geek.

On another subject, I know the Brian Reynolds referred to in the prior post, not through computer gaming but through face-to-face boardgaming from the EuroQuest convention here in MD and want to say he's a great guy and a really strong player at many games, notably Princes of Florence and Settlers of Catan.

Man, I loved this game! It does feel a *bit* like TTR, but has considerably more depth!

I like the bidding mechanism in which the amount you bid is also the amount you get to spend for the company/companies you control that round. In this game it isn't always a good thing to win a bid by the lowest possible margin.

I also like the screwing factor if you cut off much needed routes for companies you don't own.

Great, great design that's pretty light on your braincells (for a MW game at least

Have played this a few times now and keep noticing different depths and strategies.

The bidding is a great example as it is so tight - you know exactly who has the ability to outbid who (usually by one cube), but will they go for it and which shares do they want, and which shares do you really not want, and remember the last player may get something really cheap, unless you keep some cubes back and so on......

Not as light as the simple rules make it seem. Great game.

Man I hate seeing people compare this to Ticket to Ride. Its much deeper. I think the depth of the decision-making is maybe a little opaque at first. But the auction phase, especially with timely passing, is very well done. Then the jockeying for control, shares and endgame draft position....it starts very early in the game. This is a game that won't probably be fully appreciated until its OOP and hard to obtain. This is one of my favorite Wallace designs....right up there with Brass and Age of Steam.

The elections are the more interesting and elegant part, but the battles tend to take more time because that part of the system is a bit clunky and the rules/examples are less than awesome. If you look in the files system, someone has worked out how to reduce the multiple d6 roles into a single percentile dice roll - really helps to move things along.

Combat system is one of best I've seen - it really gives the more potent side the advantage but it leaves enough uncertainty so that you can sweat a bit during rolling. Work of genius, I tell you.

Right. if I remember correctly the major change in this is that instead of having all of the chits available for purchase at the start of the game they become available randomly. I would probably label this a re-implementation, much like Railroad Tycoon is a reimplementation of Age of Steam which is in itself a reimplementation of Volldampf and the Early Railways games.

This is one weird little monkey... The dice mechanics are too random, though. Thankfuly, Larry posted a variant that I'll try and post my opinions on it.

I enjoy every MW game I play, but I've played this one 5 times now and still have yet to truly enjoy this. For me aside from the artwork it never feels thematic. Players just hop around the board and take towers by rolling dice. I'm still waiting to find the good parts. It lacks the intrigue of his other gems, although I can see where the intrigue was supposed to be, it's just not there when I play it.

I'm not sure the "playing both sides of war" thing works so well here. But don't worry, I'm still playing it, waiting for the awesomeness light bulb to turn on.

#2 in Treefrog line.
#1 was Tinners' Trail.

After the flood has a few of Wallace's trademarks: unique battles and area conquest. The trading aspect adds a lot to make this game more than the average offering; It adds a lot of the depth. The armies and empires do battle, but it is not a game that will be won from the battles alone. Typical Wallace: lots to think about and many, many options each round. Had this been the first in the Treefrog line, imho I believe it would've made more of a punch than did TT, but on the negative, starting with a 3-player only game might've been a bad idea. Either way, all 3 of the Treefrog line have been engaging till the end.

In my book this is the best Wallace title in years. The fact that it is a 3p only game is even more impressive.

I think once more people start receiving their copies of this and get to play it finally(I'm still waiting!) we'll see it move up quite a bit.

One play, did not like it. My complaint was the wide variance between getting third and second on the first turn, which made it virtually impossible to catch up if you screwed up. Of course, I was a newbie playing the game but it left a bad taste in my mouth. I thought the much lesser-known but similar (in terms of the location and mechanics) One More Barrel was -- despite flaws -- a much stronger and more interesting game. Obviously, you also have the possibility indeed likelihood of two ganging up against one which is also why I don't three-player PR games much any more.

An area conquest game.

This one didn't work for me. WAY too much hype and a much-delayed printing probably didn't help.

I've written before that this game probably had just about every unlucky thing occur to it that you could imagine for a new design. I think that's the primary reason for its mediocre average rating. It really is quite a good game, as long as you're not expecting the latest "Civ Lite" title. And ignoring the "3 hex rule" (which, by all accounts, was inserted very late in the design process) is probably a good idea as well.

Actually since amphibious assaults are not allowed, plenty of the map is safe even after reaching the sailing era. Still this is a civilization theme game that I have not yet solved, thus it is still challenging and fun for me.

Have not played the published game, but once played a fairly finished prototype and it got late and none of the players wanted to play the game to completion, so a big disappointment. Interesting that a number of the nay-sayers on this one are people I recognize as huge fans of most of MW's games.

Both of which you can get directly from his designer page (which, unlike your list, automatically updates), the very first item in your list!

I did not feel like I was entering a competition by posting this geeklist and I never promised any sort of critical analysis. I would say on my behalf, however, that this list has sparked some pretty good discussions and has therefore far exceed any expectations I had about it.

I admit I didn't sound very friendly.

And no, this is not about competition, but about information management.

As said above, there are other, easier ways to do that. But apart from the benefit to you, it is hard work for other people who are interested in the works of mr Wallace to sift through various geeklists to find one with extra information on the games. Sometimes you and others are better off working on a single list together.

Ah well, just my futile attempt to inhibit the entropy of the internet. Lost cause. shake

Phew! I never imagined anyone would have anything unkind to say about my geeklist. In fact, I never thought more than about 10 people would ever even look at my list! I guess I need to respond to a couple of issues raised.

First, the designer page does indeed list all of the designer's games and it can be sorted by title, rating, or rank, but I like the geeklist anyway because I get to see the box art and I can make comments (as can others).

There is another interesting thing about the two forms of listing and that is that the ranks are different! For instance, if you look at just the top three games on my list (Age of Steam, Brass, and Railroad Tycoon), the rankings are 12-15-23 respectively, but on Martin Wallace's designer page, they are 11-22-23 and RRT outranks Brass. I wonder why the discrepancy?

As to the five better Martin Wallace geeklists, two are done in chronological order of release date and one is a statistical analysis that I didn't understand. The other two were 1) a list of games pertaining to William Wallace (Braveheart) and; 2) a tribute to the late author David Foster Wallace. I believe my list, which is based on BGG popularity, provides a different way to view the designer's work than any of those lists.
