Two questions that I often see and find difficult to answer are some variation of "Which expansion should I buy?" followed closely by "How should I mix and match my expansions?"

Arkham Horror falls in the category of games where mixing all of the expansions is not necessarily a good idea. Most of the expansions were developed and tested to interact with the base game and so frequent issues pop up when mixing more than one expansion. In addition, the "big box" expansions also serve a "tool box" function where certain components can be added to the game without incorporating the enitre expansion (a common example is Injury/Madness cards from Arkham Horror: Dunwich Horror Expansion).

This GeekList attempts to gather the most common ways to play Arkham Horror based on community input. I hope it finally answers the questions so many have had when entering that strange Massachusetts town.

Note: The Poll function and GeekList function still have compatibility issues. When you first look at a poll, it may appear to be filled in already. This is typical. Please "Clear" the answers and Vote for your own answers. It will then record normally (though may not refresh very often).

Feel free to add your own polls at the end of the list (you can add a poll in this thread and paste it here). Expand upon any answers in the comment section under each of the entries.

To kick this off, we need to get started with the base game. Since my typical questions apply to the expansion interactions with the base game, I am skipping most of the questions on this entry.

I also assume if you do not own the game, and have no plans to purchase it, there is no point in contributing to this GeekList anyway! But thanks for stopping by!

Question 1. Generally, how do you use This Expansion? (select only one)
The intent of this question is to determine how you generally use the expansion. Is it always mixed in with the base game? Do you occasionally use it? Have you shelved it?

Question 2. This Expansion is best mixed with the following other expansions? (select all that apply)
Looking at just this expansion, which expansions mix well with this particular title. A question at the end will attempt to come up with the best combos of all expansions.

Question 3. Considering the expansion as a "tool box," how do you use the components of This Expansion? (select all that apply)
Some items are standard usage (like Sanity or Money) and I purposefully left them off the list. Some items are designed to go with other components and I had a gut decision to make. Some I left on(such as Blight cards and the KiY Herald) while others I removed (DH tokens without the DH). If you feel I missed anything, please select Other and "explain" below.

I also tried to standardize some answers though it may not make perfect sense:
- Always Use - means you leave it in the base game and never/rarely remove it (Injury/Madness cards, for example). What I also mean is if you keep it in the game even if it doesn't get used that often (like a Bank Loan that is available but not taken out).
- Mostly Use - means you use it when you use that specifc expansion though it may not necessarily come up in a game (Sheldon Gang cards, for example)
- Occasionally (deliberate selection) - means you purposely use an item when not using that particular expansion but only sometimes (such as a Epic Battle cards)
- Occasionally (random selection) - means you occasionally allow for the use of the component but not always (such as Heralds/Guardians, which might not be used in a game)
- Never Use- does nothing for you but take up space in the box
- Special Use (explain below) - in case you have a houserule you use
- Not Applicable - you can leave the answer blank but this is here in case you want to click something!

Question 4. On a Scale from 5-1, how does This Expansion impact the game? (select only one)
Does this expansion make the "Arkham experience" better or worse. It can be in terms of theme or game play. Highly subjective.

Question 5. On a Scale from 5-1, how would you rank This Expansion? (select only one)
[i]If the base game is a perfect 3 on this scale, how would you rate the expansion? Please select Not Applicable if you have not played the expansion.

The first of the "small box" expansions.

Arkham Horror: Curse of the Dark Pharaoh Expansion introduced the idea of a theme specific set of decks. I wasn't around when it was first released but it seemed to be a welcome addition to most players at the time.

The concept of Exhibit Items was included as a new small card deck. Not only granting special abilities, the Items were sometimes required and rewarded during encounters. The expansion introduced one way to setup multiple Allies that was subsequently overruled by Dunwich. However, many still use a system similar to CotDP when setting up extra Allies in the game.

CotDP is the most maligned of the expansions. But for a first stab at an expansion, most people welcomed the small box. Some issues were addressed when FFG posted a new Herald (a concept introduced in The King in Yellow) on their website.

The first of the "big box" expansions.

Another expansion introduced before I was playing the game, Arkham Horror: Dunwich Horror Expansion was the first in a series of "new city" type expansions. A new board, approximately a third of the size of teh Arkham board, introduced new locations and items to track. Rail movement was established so investigators could travel between the boards. A new mechanism for tracking monsters was created in the Vortices.

Along with the new locations, DH contained extra Arkham encounters making 14 cards the standard size of every location deck. New investigators and Ancient Ones were introduced along with a lot of new card concepts. Though not typically seeing a lot of game time, the Dunwich Horror was brought in as a new monster type with his own set of changing attributes. Eventually, a Herald was also created for the Dunwich Horror and posted on the FFG website.

Dunwich is generally regarded as increasing the difficulty of the base game. With new GOOs and more territory to cover, it takes more effort to win. In addition, the conept of Gate Bursts were introduced on Mythos cards that could blow open selaed gatesd and clearout the Sky.

The second of the small box expansions.

Arkham Horror: The King in Yellow Expansion was a mini-expansion created by the designer of CotDP, Robert Vaughn. Further components were introduced in this set, most notable of which is the Herald concept. The Herald is a "mini" Ancient One that has some global effects before the real GOO shows up at the end of the game. The concept was so well received that FFG released new Heralds for the previous expansion and have included new ones in every expansion since.

The KiY also increased the difficulty by including Act cards that were activated by certain Mythos cards. The curtain could randomly come down on the game if the investigators didn't act oon tough decisions through-out the game. This mechanic seems to be the biggest casualty of mixing all expansions as it waters down the frequency that Act cards activate.

A final concept introduce was Blight cards, in essense an Anti-Ally. These well-known townfolk finally go aff the deep end. When they are drawn, a new global effects enters play. Anytime these chracters are met in an encounter, their insanity rubs off on the investigators!

The second of the big box expansions.

When Arkham Horror: Kingsport Horror Expansion was first announced, fans thought "Innsmouth Horror" would finally be released. But FFG wanted to release another big box expansion before the presumable finally of IH.

Much like DH, KH includes more investigators, decks, GOOs and a new city board. KH also introduced the Elders in a form of anti-Herald, the Guardian. These new gods are played much like Herlads with their global effect on the game until the Ancient One awakens. But these guys help the investigators, makig the game a bit easier.

KH is unique in that all locations in Kingsport or stable and do not spawn monsters directly. However, the concept of Rifts are introduced and the only way to remove them is to vist Kingsport locations.

The most utilized feature that can be used outside the expansion is the new Epic Battle cards along with the Ancient One Plot cards. This allows a more unique battle between the investigators and GOOs. All GOOs from the base game and DH, along with KH, are represented here (with the exception of Azathoth, of course).

The final feature is the use of aquatic movement and locations. This is a forerunner to what inevitably points to an Innsmouth Horror expansion.

The third of the small box expansion.

Arkham Horror: The Black Goat of the Woods Expansion came as a surprise to most of us. With the release of KH barely complete, the last thing we expected was another expansion so soon. Even more surprising, to me at least, was that Kevin Smith actually designed this small box expansion, his first.

Following in the footsteps of CotDP and KiY, BGotW injects a shot of flavor into the game without adding too many components. As witht he other expansions, new large card decks are supplimented while new small deck cards are introduced.

Most notable is being able to infiltrate the Cult of the 1,000 Goats and the possibility of being Corrupted along the way.

The "global" cards introduced in BGotW are the new Difficulty cards. These add quick ways to tweak the difficulty with very little setup. the final score is modified by which card is in play.
