Bobby Mercer (1946-2008) Former New York Yankee Centerfielder and Broadcaster

"Bobby Murcer was a born Yankee, a great guy, very well-liked and a true friend of mine," said Yankees owner George Steinbrenner. "I extend my deepest sympathies to his wife Kay, their children and grandchildren. I will really miss the guy."

Murcer first came to us in 1965 out of the same rolling hills of Oklahoma as his boyhood idol, Mickey Mantle, and with the same lofty expectations. But while that, too, might have been considered a curse for most any other ballplayer, Murcer - who like Mantle was signed by the legendary Yankee scout Tom Greenwade, and began his professional career as a shortstop before shifting to center field - felt honored to be compared with the great Yankee slugger.

DICK MARTIN (1922-2008) Co-Hoast along with Dan Rowan of ROWAN & MARTIN's Laugh-In

FROM CNN.COM

"Laugh-in," which debuted in January 1968, was unlike any comedy-variety show before it. Rather than relying on a series of tightly scripted song-and-dance segments, it offered up a steady, almost stream-of-consciousness run of non-sequitur jokes, political satire and madhouse antics from a cast of talented young actors and comedians that also included Ruth Buzzi, Arte Johnson, Henry Gibson, Jo Anne Worley and announcer Gary Owens.

Presiding over it all were Rowan and Martin, the veteran nightclub comics whose standup banter put their own distinct spin on the show.

Like all straight men, Rowan provided the voice of reason, striving to correct his partner's absurdities. Martin, meanwhile, was full of bogus, often risque theories about life, which he appeared to hold with unwavering certainty.

CYD CHARISSE
Born: March 08, 1921 Died: June 17, 2008

She was the leggy beauty whose balletic grace made her a memorable partner for Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly in classic MGM musicals like "Singin’ in the Rain", "The Band Wagon" and "Brigadoon"

From the New York Times:

In "Bandwagon" Astaire played a fading Hollywood song-and-dance man hoping to make a comeback on Broadway and who finds himself cast in a show opposite a snooty ballerina (Ms. Charisse). The couple do not see eye-to-eye until they take a nighttime carriage ride through a moonlit Central Park and wind up embracing languorously to the strains of "Dancing in the Dark."

Aoki was an improbable success story who came to the United States from Japan on a wrestling scholarship and got his start in business by renting an ice-cream truck in Harlem, N.Y. He saved $10,000 from his ice-cream sales to open the first Benihana on New York's West 56th Street in 1964. He quickly built it into an international corporation that, at its peak, had about 100 restaurants worldwide.
