This is the traditional weekly thrift and bargain finds list.
These lists may start empty but as always: add your items.
Put in what you consider a bargain, tell us how much you paid and the place you got it from. Bargains can be thrift store finds or any second-hand purchases or discounted games bought new. Don\'t forget to add your encounters with the Thrift Store Irritant Squad™ and any other embellishments in order to make it even more interesting.
Our GeekGuild: The Ancient and Loyal Order of Thrifters. Enter the halls of thriftdom at your own risk. Do mind the stacks of prized games. Don\'t mention the musty smell and try not to sneeze. Be sure to bow before our King Krazygit I, and pay your due respects to previous Kings EvilTimmy I and Blackwind I. http://www.boardgamegeek.com/guild/193
The Order\'s Anthem:
Important Notice Data will be collected on the 19th of January in order to determine the 2008 King of the Thrifters (and other associated positions). While the exact method of determination is yet to be set, it is almost certainly going to be a variation of last year\'s and will include a combination of number of finds and thumbs received. You have until then to campaign, connive, and convince others to thumb your finds. Good Luck!
And the 2009 thrifting year starts just like the 2008 year ended -- with a game for the kids.
Another item I was somewhat interested in was a Carly Simon LP. I almost thought it was just for me, but then realized that vanity is not a trait I possess.
Sorry for everyone who wanted LOTR to take this spot. If one pops up, I'll reassign it its rightful spot.
El Grande for €3.50, courtesy of an auction site. Complete and essentially like new, but there was a bit of strange scum on the box. Wiped it off easily enough, though. (But if you hear about an unexplained anthrax outbreak in Austria on the news, you'll know what happened.)
Been wanting to try this for a while after seeing all the praise on the Geek. Looking forward to getting it onto the table.
I found a couple good ones this time around. Found the German version of this game. Complete less the rules which I guess is OK since I can't read German anyway.
I recently purchase a set of Lord of the Rings checkers for just such a problem... They're hideous metalic plastic rings, but at least they're vaguely golden, and have the wrting on them.
Also, my set is missing one red die. Just the one. On the other hand, the cards were unused...
The box on this one was in really rough shape but when I opened it up all the components were still factory sealed. I wonder what kind of shape the box was in before it got to VV.
For some reason I got it in my head that this sold well on ebay. Looks like I was wrong but before realizing my mistake I picked up 2 copies for a dollar each. One complete and one just missing the green cardboard piece.
Found this at a GW. I almost never see games there, unless they are a Target return, which this apparently was. It was also much more than I wanted to pay @ 9.00 for in shrink bits, but opened box. I know I've been thrifting too long when 65% off retail on a new release makes me hesitate to buy a game I actually WANT to play. EDIT: Left behind a Sorry Sliders (store return and Tape Monkied) for 8.00, if anyone's just dying to get this.
Yah, that's what I tried to tell myself, but I didn't want to wait. I know I'll eventually find one for $3, but at least I've got a complete copy for myself, guaranteed. Oh, I also wouldn't have paid $15, but $9 was close enough for me.
On the same run I also found this for 2.70. I normally dodge Trivia games, but the game bits look great. I'm thinking they'll go good with Techno Witches which I've been eye-balling every time I go into Little Shoppe of Games. Maybe this is the excuse I need to pick it up, next time.
Both games for less than half of what they usually sell for? I consider that a deal. Now I just need to get rid of my first edition one I picked up for $38.00 last year. Now I just need to wait for it to arrive. The seller was making room for a new baby.
Both for $60 (and more recent printings to boot) is a good deal...
I have a friend who would be interested in your spare Med copy; perhaps we can work out a trade. [My list is woefully out of date but I'll check to see if there's something I can tempt you with off your wants]

I guess my post was a bit misleading. I have a First Edition Europe, not Med. Sorry.

Ah, bummer. I, too, have a first ed. Europe [found the last copy in NoVA as far as I could figure, buried in one of my FLGS when it was between printings--don't really feel the urge to upgrade it, though I wouldn't mind getting heavier-stock cards if they ever go that route]
$20 for a New in shrink BSG from Borders for 1/2 of the original FFG 39.98 retail (before the $10 hike!). They still had another copy. Only other decent sale game was a Wits n' Wagers.
1/2 off at Go! Games, not a STEAL, but hits my sweet spot for something already on my want list. $22.50. $25, oops, thought it was priced the same as Khet. Where's the "Duh!" emoticon?
Bought TWO copies of this for friends that wanted them. (I called to check, as I thought somebody wanted this.) Both were also Half off @ Go! Games. $25 each.

Got tired of waiting to find this @ thrift, so I SPLURGED! and bought it for 1/2 off @ G0! Games for 14.95. I gave it to my GF took it to give it to me for Valentine's day. I'm not sure how that works.
my GF took it to give it to me for Valentine's day. I'm not sure how that works.
How 'that' works 'goes' like this...You "go along" with her idea of a Valentine's Day present, OR Valentine's Day presents itself as nothing more than a Giant Pain in your sad, lonely backside.
1/2 off @ Go! Games, yet again $22.49 for Frickin' Laser Beams with an Egytian theme. I just can't sit around and wait for true Thrift to deliver these kinds of goods, unlike those in the Holy Land.
I like funky dice. 1/2 off $5 and last of the Go! Games Marathon. Hope these deals have been worthy of thrift listing, as I was pleased to find them! As penance for this pile o' games, I was forced to watch the unending Austrailia. http://www.australiamovie.com/ Probably not worth a separate listing, but I also got "Mexican" Train Dominoes with an electronic train station and little plastic trains to play with my prospective in-laws. They love dominoes, but I don't. I figured it'd give me something fun to make noise with and irritate the other players.
I got this too at Go! Games for 50% off. I played it with my daughter last night. It's a great "school night" game. I also picked up Fluxx, Advanced Mastermind, Carcassonne, Go and Ingenious for 50% off. I love after Christmas sales!
Hey Keng Ho. I'll take a look and see if they're still floating around at one of the local bookstores. I've got a small cache of dice already collected for you, so what's one more; check your GM toward the weekend [since I won't be able to get out before then]
yah, many party games take this disquise, but are thwarted by their own garish coloring and moronic graphics. Sadly this was one of the most cleverly disguised land mines, I've seen. Anyone tried this? Is it really so bad?
Sounds like someone needed pawns for another game. I had the same problem and ended up subbing some pawns from another game into my copy just so we could play. I like this game, but it's more fun with six players than with 2 or 3.
I have a lot of spare parts for this game (except pawns, of course) if anyone needs something.
Ahhh I wish I could find a copy (at a reasonable price) of the Sinking of the Titanic; I had that as a kid and it was pretty fun for a roll & move.
Just to be clear, my thumb is for the mention of one of my favorites, The Sinking of the Titanic which not to be confused with the one that was found. Of course, even the Sinking of the Titanic is broken once you hit the water and are waiting for the rescue ship.
Sorry for jumping the gun on the list and seeding it with a find from last week (yesterday, in fact....), but I wanted to make sure that the Important Notice made its way into the header.
I will be running some automated scrapers on the 19th of January to gather info for the King of the Thrifters (and other associated positions). After that, there will be the usual bickering about how to determine the rankings, but it will almost certainly include number of finds and thumbs given as it did last year.
