Last year's list
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/27970

Here's the 2007 list
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/18611

And the 2006 list:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/13367

Criteria for selection include:
Uniquness of the find.
Coolness of the find.
Pure eBay value of the find.
Whatever other whacked-out reasons the judges decide to use...

If you disagree with the judges' decision, please don't hesitate to add your comments, and the judges will arbitrarily make their decisions anyway. laugh

Happy New Year to all of the thrifters! A short week, but one full of fine finds.

The geeks across the pond had a good week, with finds of Space Hulk and an unpunched Gibson's Kingmaker. An unpunched AH History of the World was the initiation for a new thrifter, and minionhunter made a nice Loopin' Louie find, (extra chicken tokens!). Thunder Road was found, and Ticket to Ride was a contender. Auf der Flucht vor Tyrannosaurus , which, by the way, is very fun to try to pronounce certainly got the prize for most unusual find, and amazingly, the Longest Day seems to have lost its cachet among the judges, (though this judge thinks it should always win). But what better way to begin the year, than with the #1 game on the geek getting the #1 spot on this year's list. Dogmatix takes home the first FOTW with his craigslist find of Agricola!

Another tough week full of awesome finds. Let's take a look at some of this week's top finds.

Junta was found by two different thrifters, and there was a bog-box Diplomacy find, as well as an old Gibson's version. There were also a pair of Advanced Civs found. Niagara got picked up, as well as Caylus. Nexus Ops for two bucks is pretty sweet as well, as were two copies of Epic Duels, (one in shrink), and Battle Cry. Balancing Aliens gets a shout out for its cool Alieneeples, and rescuing an Empire in Arms from the rubbish bin deserves some accolades.

In the end though, it came down to a showdown between El Grande and Boxcars. Rail Baron's progenitor would have easily taken the statue, were it not for the fact that the judges have no idea when it was actually thrifted, and the fact that it is missing its payout chart/spinner. So this week's FotW goes to E. Decker for the 3 Euro find of El Grande, as classic Euro-style games continue to dominate the 2009 awards.

A pretty fantastic week all around. We had great Euro-finds like Richochet Robots, Tikal, Bohnanza, Carc, O Zoo lo Mio, Ticket to Ride and a first edition Reef Encounter. We had your Ameritrashy finds like Buffy, Heroquest, Mutant Chronicles and the unplayed GOT:Clash of Kings expansion!
and we had the unusual, with the Japanese version of Action Attraction. In the final tally though, there were three finds that stood out. My own Plague and Pestilence, an unpunched Mighty Empires, and mr_mrholmes winning find of the Tresham classic 1829.

My goodness what a week. Perhaps one of the most impressive weeks in a long time. Let's take a gander at what the thrifters pulled in this week. Page 1, over 100 thumbs for Herman's Power Grid! It was the week of Acquire, with about 12 of them on the list, including Kevin Wood's tale of stick-to-itivitiness which got him a Hasbro copy. You want hauls? How about IrishAlum's find of Wildlife, Survive!, and C&O/B&O, or NJAnge's haul of China, El Capitan, and High Society?

You want Ameritrash finds? FOTW has em for you!
WoW, Battle Cry, multiple King Oil's and Cashflows.

From Across the pond we've got my 2nd Edition Kingmaker with the VArian cards included, and a Games Research Diplomacy. And a Wiz-War was a pretty sweet find as well, (despite the impending reprint). Lots of foreign-language copies made their presence felt, with Zug um Zug and Niagara leading the way. How about standard Euro-games? I hear you cry!
New England, Aladdin's Dragons, AOE:Age of Discovery, Modern Art. Unique finds included Bumps and Grinds, BattleBoard and my own, vastly underthumbed The Game of Yertle.

But in the end, it was the huge Talisman bonus find made by Schraml that takes home this week's statue!

After the Bohnanza that was the previous week, this one felt a bit lacklustre. Oh there were some nice finds, but overall, the quantity of excellence was way down. Patrick got the uber-cool Orbit find, the evil former king got a nice Lost Cities pickup, frankenfletch got a loopin Louie with all chicken tokens!, and DuckofDeath got his Carcassonne back. Frankenfletch also snagged a Torres, and a Tikal was found as well. Samurai Swords and Mutant Chronicle snagged the plastic bit game prize, and there were the usual ton of HeroQuest finds.

Great Manzinga got the less common Warlock of Firetop Mountain, and Gregarius pulled victory from the hands of jerkish defeat with his haul of Midway, A_I Wars, Guadalcanal and Battle for the Ardennes. Nice!
Monsters of the Midway was also pretty cool. But in the end, it came down to a couple of standout finds. First was a TtR: Marklin, which is an EPIC find. And then, there was ChonChuck's wholly disrespected by the judges find of Up Front, (srsly? have you all played this? it's like, the best wargame evar). But in the end, jchaugen's find of the OOP classic Union Pacific takes home the statue this week.

A huge week, and the first of the post 2.0 BGG era! Not such a great week though. Yes, there were quality finds. Wildlife Adventure, Zertz, Epic Duels snagged right in front of some other potential thrifter, History of the World and Formula De Mini, (missing bits), the "free pile" find of Shear Panic and all. Samurai Swords, Ace of Aces, 1830 and Pillars were all fairly epic. Star Reporter was a cooler than cool find, and vastly underappreciated by the judges, IMHO. Still, the Kings demand their tributes, and so King minionhunter takes it home this week, for his find of the bit-a-licious AH/Hasbro version of Acquire

It was the week of Netrunner, and odd finds. But very, very difficult for the judges, as some people have forgotten the rules.

How is this: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/39521/item/865270#item...

more deserving of FoTW than: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/39521/item/863830#item...

???

So lets look at some of the weird finds this week. We got your Poppin Hoppies, (Hippies would be a better thematic choice, I agree), See Queue, and Mercanauts. Then there was The Action Man Game, and Grand National Steeplechase Game. Tons of Netrunner showed up this week, as well as favorites like an unpunched (old AH) History of the World, Broadsides and Boarding Parties, Diplomacy (Big box AH), the usual slew of Settlers, Carc versions, Victory in the Pacific and RoboRally. There were also the above-referenced Galaxy Trucker find(s). And there were a couple of nice hauls from King krazygit, (Warrior Knights, Fury of Drac, Struggle of Empires), and stephenstover snagged a whole slew of obscure Clash of Arms wargames. New England Railways got a lot of pull with the judges, despite low thumbage. But in the end, it was dogmatix' haul of AH classics that took home the statue this week, (either the posted game OR Empires in Arms, take your pick).

Haters be damned

A bit of an easier wekk this week, though a bit of a close call at the top end of things. What a first page! Magic Realm, Wizards, Daytona 500, Wiz-War and Aladdin's Dragons all on the first page. Dogfight and Mutant Chronicles were all solid finds, as were an unpunched Samurai Swords, Formula-1, Vinci and Ace of Aces. Armed and Dangerous was a serious contender, but it couldn't overcome King krazygit's find of Power Grid, which, even though I don't like the game at all, I'd pick up for a buck fifty!

After the previous week of awesomeness, this week was a bit lackluster. Pretty much the B&N sale for most of the week, but there were a few sweet finds. Montgolfiere is pretty nifty, as is Ricochet Robots. A pair of Pirate's Coves and a Mystery of the Abby took care of the DoW for us. A pair of Take it Easy's surfaced, as well as Dragonland, Freinds & Foes and Thunder Road. In the final judging, it came down to three finds though. 1830, Medina, and this week's winner, eldrwyrm, with his find of Hammer of the Scots, (which I admit, would have me soiling my armor...)

Another crazy week, with a bunch of truly unbelievable finds. Who gives Stone Age, Tannhauser, Age of Napoleon and Niagara to the thrift store? WHO?!?!?!

El Grande is always nice, as was a French Puerto Rico, and a Tumblin Dice, (one I certainly wouldn't have a problem thrifting). A West End CE was pretty sweet as well. How bout a pair of expansions, one for C&C Ancients and one for Combat Commander? Ridiculous finds. In the old-and-weird category we had Pursuit, Pro Soccer, The Test Driver Game and Space Marine. But this weeks winner goes to ol' King EvilTimmy for his find of an unpunched A Game of Thrones...(I thought he had retired?!?)

An interesting week, with a lot of "breadth" in the finds, but fewer peaks and valleys. Thrifty Modern Art to start the week? Sweet. Sky Galleons of Mars? Nice! Putting two other games on that same item, without adding those items? Judges say: "lame thumbwhoring"!

Viktory II? First off l2spell!!! Second off: Local Wargamer: "Very random game...It's better than risk in that it wont last too long, but that's about the only positive thing I can say about it."

NOT ELIGIBLE FOR LOTTERY!

Rail Baron? Duplicated. TtR? Ditto!

Ingenious and New England? Very very nice solid finds. A complete Epic Duels? Unheard of! And a Samurai Swords that's complete and unplayed? Nearly a winnar. Civ and Supremacy also got strong support. But then there was the controversy, (say that in a British manner please).

Twilight Imperium 3 and Arkham Horror. Now both were horribly missing bits. But, we are talking Fantasy Flight here, and, wonderful folks that they are, they replace dang near everything you could ever ask of them if they can. So it's a gray area. This judge was ready to give it to them, seeing it as a tribute to FFG's customer service, that finding an incomplete game generally = a complete game, but the cries of "down that path lies anarchy!" prevailed.

And so Dejah_Thoris takes home the statue for this French Find of Dune!
And it appears the winner is French, so there you go...

So this looked as if it were going to be a tough week for the judges. First page alone found a Java and a Palazzo Paletti! That's a crazy tough set of nominees to crack. But how about Nippon Rails, Athens & Sparta (in SHRINK!), and Torres? Or Chainsaw Warrior or A Game of Thrones with A Clash of Kings for a buck? For pure eBay-age, it's hard to beat Fire in the East, un-freaking-punched no less. That's a few hundred bucks right there, (and deserved more respect from the judges IMHO). And not one, but two 18xx finds, with both 30 and 56 being found. But in the end, it was the huge haul by kathy1, topped off by Le Havre, which took home this week's statue.

Apologies to all for my lack of entries lately. Been crazy busy. So what do we have this week? A ton of duplicate finds, and some really sweet ones as well. Multiple Carcassonne's, Conquest of the Empires, SPI War of the Ring, and HeroQuests, (thought the "in shrink" copy was my vote for FOTW). We had your Mutant Chronicles, your Cashflow, and your Dark Tower. Civ, Rail Baron, 1830, and Kremlin + Revolution represent for the AH crowd, with Pacific War thrown in for the VG side of things. Eagle games got some finds, with both American Civil War and Napoleon in Europe being found. ON the Euro side of things, how about Through the Desert, Dos Rios, SAn Juan and Tzaar? There was a huge Car Wars haul, and a Hit the Beach. But in the end it came down to two games, Erik's find of first edition Space Hulk, and this week's winner Caliburn, for his page 1 find of Pandemic.

It was the week of giant hauls, (and Quarto!). Jtabler got things started with a huge run of old AH wargames, quickly followed up by Dizzy2D's pulling in a ton of Euro-finds and munchkin's. Shawn_solo then snagged a ton of Settler's. Dizzy2D then retorted with Shadows over Camelot and East Front II, (which deserved far more love from the judges than it received IMO). Battle Cry, Cashflow, Daytona 500 and a Heartland Trefoil edition of Civ deserved mention as well. But the creme du hauls was Dizzy2Ds find of RoboRally and Armed and Dangerous, which coasted to victory this week...

It was the week of the Big Boggles! AT least three of these were pulled in this week. Also, a couple of Rail Barons and at least three Carcassonnes. Other notable Euro-type finds included Pirate's Cove, Samurai, a nice haul from Erik of Torres and Medieval Merchant, a bunch of Blokuses and some Ingeniouses. There were a pair of Civ finds, as well as my own Adv Civ with the Western Extension map. X-Men Alert and a Fortress America represented for the AT. In the end though, this was my week, with my huge haul of basically unplayed, perfect condition games. I chose the one with the most value, though I was a lot more excited by 2038 than this beast...

Quite a tough week for the judges, as there weren't any runaway winners. It was the week of Blood Bowl, with a first, second, and third edition all being found. Three Cashflows and two King Oils got picked up, as well as a pair of Ticket to Rides. Trevlix had a nice haul of AH wargames, including an unpunched Crescendo of Doom, WS&IM, VitP, and Trireme. Manhattan was found for the second week in a row, and Torres and St. Petersburg represented for the Euro faction. So in the end it came down to three games. Advanced Heroquest would have been a winner, but missing parts and a vague description ruled that one out, leaving Ave Caesar and this week's winner to fight to the death. Wolverine ate the horses...

Another tough week for the judges. Soooo many duplicates. Rail Baron, Ticket To Ride, Big Boggle, Fireball Island, Heroscape, RoboRally, Raj...

But a lot of good single finds as well. fastfrank had a huge CL haul including one of this judge's favorites, Age of Napoleon, as well as a 40th Anniversary Risk, and a bunch of other Phalanx/Mayfair goodness. His audacity in posting trades stuff though appears to have displeased the judges, however. I found a perfect Civ, there was an Ingenious, an Epic Duels and a Wits & Wagers. And so it came down to four finds, fighting it out for the statue this week. The Republic of Rome find, (hurt by the impending reprint I guess), the StarCraft find, (whould have won IMO but a bit pricey I guess at $25), And then there's PatK's find of five copy of Snifty Snakes, which despite the former King's blessing, didn't score well with the majority of the judges. And so, we are left with this week's winner, colonywars, for his find of Buck Rodgers, with the bits still sealed.

Despite a huge number of finds and quite a few nice hauls, finally, an easier week for the judges. herman had a very nice haul of 3M goodness, subhuman made a nice haul of Supremacy and expansion, and Dizzy made a nice Civ/WotR haul. THe screaming castle also snagged a Settlers CArd game haul, along with Carc expansions, which was pretty solid. Blokus Trigon, a shrinked Lowenhertz, Stellar Conquest, HotW, WoW:TBG, Kreig & Freiden, and Niagra all got consideration from the judges. But the hotness always will out, and so boscorooty takes home the hardware for this week, with his find of Dominion!

The judges just wish someone could find an Epic Duels...

Quite a nice week, with some solid thrifty finds. Like I'm the Boss, Ticket to Ride, Talisman, Fire in the East was looking very solid, until its expansion was found by someone else later on in the week, (which is pretty weird). Republic of Rome was looking solid, but perhaps the finder's calling it "eBait" put them off. Punct was a great find, as were Britannia, Fortress America +extras, and Palazzo. Haul-wise, Dizzy had a nice 3M haul, subhan got a double 3M Bazaar find, fishmountains had a nice little euro-haul, as did Erik. diehard4life did well with Betrayal and Nexus Ops, but sadly for him, all were eclipsed by YosT's find of a metric butt-load of ASL stuff, unpunched, all for the price of what any one of them would pull in the open market.

Despite a whopping 17 pages of finds, this week was a pretty easy one for the judges. First off, it was "Wooden-tile Acquire Week" with not one, but two finds of WTA. Other notable finds included an I'm the Boss, and old AH Titan, Formula De, Tikal, a HeroQuest Master Edition, Puerto Rico, Liberty, Gloria Mundi, multiple Civs, and a complete Epic Duels. Victoy in the Pacific and Thunder Road also were pretty nice. AN Up Front was found, but alas, incomplete. But there's no beating an in-shrink Dune, just a part of a ridiculous haul by Dumasclub, which included the aforementioned wooden-tile Acquires!

A pretty flat week, with far more chaff than wheat being reaped. A lot of very nice finds, but only a few outstanding finds. The nice finds: Ticket To Ride, Puerto Rico, Starship Catan, Samurai Swords, Conquest of the Empire, Civ and Runebound. Slightly better than nice but not quite there: Age of Napoleon, Waterloo, Kingmaker (with variant event cards), Shogun.

Which left us with the big three, Nexus Ops, Hammer of the Scots, and Merchant of Venus. AS MoV is one of my grails, I would have given it to that in a heartbeat, but the judges had a different opinion, and Hammer beats out Nexus Ops by a nose to take home the hardware.

An excruciatingly difficult week for the judges, primarily due to the fact that there were 19 pages of finds, (most of which were crapola, BTW). It was the week of Starship Troopers, with about five of these bad boys found. Also quite a lot of AH and 3M games it seems. Multiple Ploy's?!?!?

But there were some nice finds amongst the chaff. Carc: The City and a big box Acquire represented for page 2, along with a Beowulf: The Legend. International Movie Maker came through from across the pond. TI3 + SE was a craigslist catch, but didn't impress the judges too much, strangely. Zertz and Dungeon Twister did. Multiple TtRs and LOTR:TC got some love, and near the tail end of the list, there were some nice finds as well, such as Torpedo Run and Space Crusade and the Mission Dreadnought expansion for same. Which leaves us with three finds. Herman "always the bridesmaid never the bride" the German's find of the Queen's Gambit, and waaaaay back on page 17, a Dark Tower and an unpunched Gangsters. Despite the best efforts of the thrift squad, German's QG appears to still be woefully incomplete. In this judge's opinion an unpunched Gangsters, (which is a pretty darn good game), beats out a worn out Dark Tower any day of the week, but the rest of the judges disagree. slbyron takes home the statue for this week, for his working Dark Tower!

OMG...23 pages!

A despite their being more junk in here than I can shake a strange-smelling aisle lurker at, there were some very nice finds this week. Quo Vadis? for 1 Euro was pretty solid, AH represented with many, many nice finds, such as Rail Baron, Civ, Tactics, The Russian Campaign, Machiavelli, a mildewed Magic Realm, and a pair of Dune's. matthan had a very nice Heroscape find, and Ingenious, Ricochet Robots, Formula De and Empire Builder all received consideration. Lots of big boggles, Uno Hearts, a 50th Anniversary Risk, and a Cashflow weighed in on the eBay side of the aisle. Mutant Chronicles is always a good find as well. But nothing could sway the judges minds, as they overwhelmingly gave the nod to Ken's Pandemic find.

An interesting week, with tons of dupes, and quite a few "ethical" questions for our judges. herman got things started with a LOTR: Confrontation find, followed quickly by the avalanche of Ticket To Ride Europe's in several different languages. Risk 2210s and Heroquests also got duped. AH represented with a HotW, Raid on St. Nazaire, VitP, and Cuzzle's huge haul of ASL stuff. No details, no statue.

Carc: H&G and Niagara represented for the Euros, and a complete Samurai Swords was looking pretty strong. Then came the big dilemma, Ken's wooden tile Acquire. He "completed" it, with some handcrafted parts, which threw some of the judges into a tizzy. I felt that irishalum's find of the teapot cover High-Bid to be the find of the week, but what do I know.

But sneaking in on page 18 of 18, was this week's winner, shenderson02's find of an in-shrink A&A Anniversary Edition!, (which is going for ridiculous amounts on eBay)...

Another 19 page week! And a really good one for the wargamers out there. Let's take a look at the best of the loot. First out of the gate was Marvel Heroes, (with a great "stalker" story to go along with it. Formula-1 and Daytona 500 were great finds in the racing genre, with Mississippi Queen showing up for the riverboat racing fans. Space Crusade was a consideration worthy find, as was a 1st edition Talisman. davex had the haul of the week, with TtR Marklin, Empire in Arms, and Betrayal at house on the Hill. And remember when I said it was a good week for wargames? This Empire in Arms was but one of two EiA finds, which is just insane. Other dupes included Civilization and Ticket to Ride, along with about a hundred copies of Quarto and Quoridor. Tikal, Zertz and El Caballero were stellar finds, and Fortress America and a not-particularly-thrifty Queen's Gambit also got some consideration. Up Front and The Civil War, and a pair of Moseby's Raiders were all very nice wargame finds. A butterbox Venture also left this 3M afficianado drooling a bit.

But in the end, it came down to a battle of three epic finds. Charlie C's find of an unpunched Dune, Matt's find of an in shrink We The People, and brinksw's find of Twilight Imperium 3, with the Shattered Empire expansion inside. While this judge understands the magnitude of walking down the thrift isle, and going "OMFGBBQFFGBIGBoXOMGOMG!!!111!1!", the statue goes to another clearly epic find, electricvomit's WtP in-shrink find!
