After spending 3-4 days trying to figure out how to play Ghost Stories, I have decided that it has one of the worst rulebooks that I ever had to deal with. However, it is still not the worst that I have encountered. I am interested in finding out which rulebooks have puzzled, frustrated and just generally annoyed the BGG community.

Our Toss Up! rules are just xeroxed sheets a few inches across. They weren't folded or cut straight, which drove us nuts. LordDillon refolded and re-cut them to make them passable.

This one is a favorite on the site. However, so many problems with the rules often lead to player arguments and rule deciphering (followed by a vote). FAQS and Errata were posted but this game was poorly planned. Wonder if it was playtested.

For the most part, I like the old AH rulebooks. Numerically ordered, logically structured. Good stuff. This one though made it painful to decipher the game. I held on to the game since I bought it [over a decade] ago with the hope that one day...it would just...just become clear. It didn't. I traded it away a year ago as a result.

I cant stand the rule book to this. It seems to jump around willy nilly, when all I wanted was a simple game play example of turns. Is that too much to ask? My friend has owned the game for 4 years now, and we still cant bring ourselves to play it.

Another one who's rules I despise. So I read the first rule book, am told to play a simple game, yet have no idea what the cards are or what they do until I read the second book? WTF is that?

Horrible rules. Badly worded and organised by a sadist. The only thing that came close to redeeming this was the example game-turns given in the back of the rulebook.

I thought such a short little instruction set would be easy enough to sit down and understand. That is if they wrote it with an ounce of clarity. It's been a while since I sat down with these rules, but I remember it being a rough go that I haven't revisited since. It's been kicking around for over two-years now and it still hasn't been played.

I had no idea how to play this with the rules that came in the box. The online rules are an improved presentation, but there's still way too much command & control chrome. After a couple of tries, I was still not sure that I ever managed to work through the activation of Wellington's army as intended. Too bad, as it's a different, interesting scale and I think it's an attractive game.

I'm surprised that Grass isn't listed yet.

The rules are so bad that the game comes with a second "Reference SHeet" that has its own list of rules on it. SOme rules are on one sheet... some are on the other. It's a fairly simple card game cursed with an incomprehensible rules description.

Tried to learn/teach this one at GenCon 2005. Two of us gave it a shot, and the entire group was just exasperated. This is not a complicated nor heavy game. The rulebook actually referenced pages much later in the narrative, rather than just explaining the rules in a straight forward manner. This rulebook taught me to check the Geek whenever I buy or know that I'll soon be playing a particular game. Sometimes I think the publisher should just use one of the excellent Geek reviews, and simply burn the ones published with the game itself...

We were able to struggle through this one, but it is now referred to by my friends as "Conquest of the Rules of Pangea"! Liked the bits, and the moving continents, but any suggestion of playing it just brings out comments like, "Ambiguities will be decided by pistols at ten paces".

Ok, this is the worst rulebook I ever read. I really, really wanted to play this game so bought a used one on eBay. I tried for over a week to wade through the rules. Every night before bed I'd read abit more and get more and more confused.

But thankfully rktboy rewrote the rules and printed a wonderful new PDF and rip track. The game isn't that hard at all thanks to his rewrite!

I sometimes wonder if the game had a great rulebook it might of sold well enough for the planned expansions to come out.

The talk about 4th Ed on the forums reminded me about how much of an improvement the 4th ed rules are over the 3.5ed rulebooks. Important information and tables in those were hidden in amongst everything else and it took forever to find anything when you were looking for it. Wasn't even that good for learning the game, either.

A long time ago (in a galaxy not too far away) I tried to program this as a DM's aid for running a PBM game. Couldn't do it! What with holes in the rules and unclear definitions of terms I eventually gave up.

Hopefully the reprint has addressed these issues, but I can't afford the $1,000,000 cost of the new version of the game.

Got this game at the same time as ASL SK1. Worked on figuring out both games at the same time. Figured out ASL, and was annoyed to death by Federation Commander.

Maybe I just prefer the structure of the rules from ASL (not without flaws, but readable) but it seems that these rules are missing some key elements (like more graphics on game play) and the rules seem to make informational assumptions about what the reader knows, that I assume may become clear after the game is learned.

Am I alone here or just selectively stupid? Probably both...

How has this game not made it on the list yet? This has got to be one of the most famously bad rulebooks, leading to first plays mired in confusion. I've read through it three times now, cover to cover, and I'm pretty sure I'll still be lost when I sit down at the table... My plan is to play 2-3 solo games before I even think of inviting an opponent.

On the plus side, this rulebook has spawned one of the most thriving player aid markets on the geek! Check out squash's excellent geeklist on increasing playability.

The original published rules with this game made the game unplayable. I am considered as a rule dictator with the group of people I play with and have even been told they can't play games unless I am there as they can't figure out the rules. This could be because of my training as a soccer official, but still the game was unplayable with the original rules... I had no idea how to even start the game and nothing was ever happening poorly organized and designed. HOWEVER, the new released rules were wonderful in comparison, and made this game playable and even fun. Galactic Destiny has hit the table many times and is always a lot of fun once you get over the learning curve and play with the new rules.

I can't tell you how many times I got up and walked around and vented my frustration on this rulebook. The worse part is knowing that there's a game that sounds somewhat interesting somewhere in it all.
