xlhrider started an interesting thread asking the question of which historical battle is the topic of the most wargames. As the thread demonstrates, this is difficult to determine. The idea of this geeklist is to use a 'wiki' strategy and let several users contribute so as to get as complete an accounting as possible.

There will be some debate on which games belong. As a starting point lets use these rules:

If a game is on some aspect of the battle, it belongs on the list. For example, a game about the 20th Maine or Little Round Top belongs on the Gettysburg list, since it obviously indicates an interest in that battle.

If a game is focused on a broader campaign, but simply includes the battle in question, it does not belong on the list. Only if the battle is the primary focus of the game, does it belong. So, for example, A Victory Lost, which includes Stalingrad as abstraction only, does not belong, but Stalingrad Pocket II does, since, while it focused on the outskirts of the battle, the clear design focus is on portraying how the battle on the flanks impacted the overall battle. Obviously, then, games focused on the entire multi-year Eastern Front do not belong on the Stalingrad list either.

Go ahead and include mutliple entries if a game has multiple editions. I think if a game is popular enough to get revised and reprinted, it demonstates an enduring interest in the topic.

We'll have to debate the games a bit to firm up the crieria I think.

The complete list of geeklists in the series can be found here:

Most of the game map is outside the city limits, but the battle within the city is included, and what happened on the flanks pretty much drove what happened in the city.

I also thought about some other titles that might not include "Stalingrad" in the title, but perhaps some geographical references - in this case "Volga". There are some other games with Volga in the title, but I was not familiar enough with the games to add (or dismiss them).

This and Battle for the Factories are "halves" of the original Phoenix Streets of Stalingrad. The two NOVA titles are made with 1/2" counters, rather than 5/8" and the maps are of correspondingly reduced. The problem is that the two halves do not add up to a complete SoS. One of the more earnestly sought grails is the expansion counters that allow you to play the last three scenarios of SoS.

The games differ from the Third edition of SoS primarily in the combat system. In the original the defender gets first fire against one attacker, the attacker then totals his fire factor against ONE unit in the defender's hex and rolls to see if he kills the target. If the defending target survives the combat is over, but if the defender is killed the attacker can initiate the combat routine again (defensive fire, attacker loss, attacker fire) until he wins, fails or gives up. The decision of what to target may not be trivial (unless there is a sniper involved, always kill snipers!).

Surprisingly good game with spectacularly bad graphics. Rumour has it the designer was on a tight deadline and couldn't finish the "polished" version of the map in time - so ended up with the play test map becoming the actual map. Neat, quick, and tense though...

Not strictly a Battle of Stalingrad wargame per se, but the Eastern Front expansion for Memoir '44 provides a scenario (#41) called "[Stalingrad] Red Barricades Factory Complex". The victory condition for the scenario is a whopping 10 medals. That's quite a bloody affair for the M'44 system, quite bloody indeed!

[Note: The image to the left depicts this scenario set up and ready to play.]

If this counts, then Panzerblitz will count. And then Panzer Leader will count for the Battle of the Bulge and D-Day. A scenario alone probably should make a game about Stalingrad.

What is ment by poorly. Do you mean there was a tough to overcome the Russian defense and that the game usually turned on one or two die rolls. No Nazi supermen in this one. Their Russian campaign was no different. The Nazis looked like they were taking a lot of ground but they could never win against a smart Russian player. I once took Berlin in 1943. Some of us played these games to death and didn't give diddly about the poor supermen. We hated Germans because our fathers had to fight them. I can't stand some of the listed games here because of their serious Nazi-itis.

I got this one in the '70s along with its sisters: Moscow Campaign, Kursk, Destruction of Army Group Center, and Breakout & Pursuit. They all used the move-shoot-move mechanic pioneered in France 1940. The games were easy to learn and very enjoyable.

Most of the games after this point are really not about Stalingrad, but the campaign of Army Group South. Though interesting, they probably don't belong on the list, as they are not about the Battle for Stalingrad.

No insult intended, just pointing out that the geeklist is supposed to contain games about the actual battle, not the campaign.

This points to an issue that I raised here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/39227
in the 'companion' Waterloo Geeklist, which is regarding the 'scale' to be considered. For Waterloo, examples were given of games that cover a small part of the Waterloo battlefield, the Waterloo battlefield itself, the slightly wider 'campaign', encompassing Ligny and Quatre Bras or even the large scale campaign in Belgium. Similarly, for Stalingrad, is one to consider 'tactical' games / scenarios covering a small part of the fighting in Stalingrad (e.g. counterattack of the Guards in Squad Leader)? Games covering the fighting 'in' the city itself, or the wider German offensive to Stalingrad and the Soviet counterattack on the flanks surrounding the 6th Army?

Memoir'44 should be on here as well, I recall there are Stalingrad scenarios in it. It's added to the Bulge list for this reason as well, that's why it should be here too then.

About half these games cover the winter 42-43 campaign in southern Russia, not specifically Stalingrad. This compares poorly to the Bulge list, which has only a handful of games that fall outside the parameters. I'm wondering if there are actually that all that many games on Stalingrad proper rather than just the entire campaign.

I think the first three scenarios of Squad Leader almost qualify the game here, since anyone who came up through the SL-GI system almost always has fond memories of learning the system with "The Streets of Stalingrad". The memories of the game are probably better than the actual scenarios.

Being part of the Programmed Instruction didn't hurt either...
