In the Wargames forum, someone is always coming along asking which game to start with--which one to buy as a first-ever wargame. That generates a thread, and several games end up being recommended. But I've noticed the same games are recommended over and over again.

So, this GeekList is a place to compile all the good "starter" wargames we can think of. If it turns out well, we can refer newcomers here instead of having to rethink our recommendations each time.

Consider: Which wargame(s) would you suggest to someone just starting out in the hobby? Or to a whole group of newbies with different period and scale interests?

This is a great game,2 to 4 players, only 8 pages of lavishly illustrated rules with multiple examples and dice less combat.
It's a point to point with blocks game specialized cards adds flavor such as events, replacements, orders allowed and combat modifiers. It can be played in about an hour for the smaller intro secccccnarios.

Can't believe this one hasn't been posted! The classic intro wargame by Jim Dunnigan.

He talks about it extensively in his wargame introduction/tutorial in the book, The Complete Wargames Handbook

You can find copies of the book very cheap on Amazon. Or, you can read it online for free here:

http://www.hyw.com/Books/WargamesHandbook/Contents.htm

The game you can find at Victory Point Games website or here on the geek. The book and the game go hand-in-hand.

Central Plains war 1930 China

This is the big civil war within the KMT which weakened the KMT and led the Japanese in invading Manchuria in 1931.

Basically from May to Nov. 1930. around a total of 2 million troops fought it out mainly in central China between the KMT Central Army factions of Chang Kai Shek and Ho Ying Chin vs. the anti Chang Kai Shek KMT factions of Yen Xishan(Shansi faction), Li Tsung Jen(Guangxi faction) & Feng Yuxiang(Northwest Army faction).

The way the war was fought was no different than the preceeding warlord era(1916-1928) with poorly armed and trained infantry being the king supported by some armoured trains, some airplanes and artillery(few heavy, some light and a lot of mortars). Also a few tanks and armoured cars.

Chang Kai Shek's forces had the advantage of better coordination than his foes but his foes had more manpower. While the war was stalemated for months, Chang was gradually losing the fight. What tipped the balance was the entry of the KMT Northeastern faction under the Manchurian warlord Zhang Xueliang who's forces effectively saved Chang from defeat.

Both sides lost like 500,000 men and effectively bankrupted the KMT. This miliary and economic weakeness prompted the Japanese in taking advantage of the situation by invading Manchuria in 1931 and trying to takeover Shanghai in 1932.

What no Dragon Rage in the list ? wow
One key reason to reprint this classic gem was that it's a good initiation the the wargaming hobby. Hex and counter with a healthy dose of chrome yet simple enough rules that noobs can master it easily.
Special effort was made to complement the full rules manual with an introductory 'game manual' to guide players during their first few games.

Both historical and fantasy wargames that can be played in half an hour. They use tiles instead of stands of miniatures; movement is a bit abstracted and simplified.

You will get a proper feel of being a warchief, choosing where to attack, supporting your troops under enermy attacks, using reserves, etc.

Easy, fast, cheap, tactical decisions... Do you want more?

Another fine foray into intro wargaming using the tried and true Mayfair block system.

I usually detest abstracted scenarios and hypothetical situations (i.e. this only has the basis of the WWII era), however I really enjoy this game! Loads of fun.

Simple hex-and-counter mechanics, but with significant chrome historical details ... like the German option Waffen-SS Ruthlessness (and consequential GI Rage).

I've just started playing this on hexwar.net. It takes Strike Force One to the next level. There are only about 20 units on each side, and only 7 turns, but the play is evenly balanced and it's quite replayable, due to unpredictability about Egyptian bombardment. I've been playing it with fog-of-war on hexwar, and I don't know if that is an option with the paper game. FOW definitely adds to the fun and replayability.

I would go with Strike Force One first to learn the mechanics of hex and counter wargames, followed by this.

17 Russian, 1 Polish, and 20 German units in an 8-turn dual (or traditional German vs. Russian) command game with a fast, simple game-turn sequence and combat odds system.

From the Oder-Neisse to Berlin. Zhukov must pound through the thicker defense lines and greater number of defending German units, but he has the units (including shock armies) to do it, and Koniev down south has farther to go.

The Gazala Gallop - Basic Game, which is the active one - uses the popular 1st Alamein/Battles for Alamein game system. It is regiment to division unit level, 5mis/8kms per hex, and has 14 2-day gameturns. (The Advanced Game is still there for its map, for anyone curious.) It plays in about 1.5 hours.

The Afrika Korps has superior speed/maneuverability, while the British 8th Army's 2nd and 22nd Armoured Brigades (which had the notoriously unreliable Crusader tanks) are subject to the British Breakdown Rule. The American Lend-Lease Grant medium tanks are the backbone of the most powerful British unit, 7th Armoured Brigade, while Valentine and slow, plodding Matilda British infantry tanks are in the 1st and 32nd Tank Brigades.

Airpower is abstractly modeled, as in Battles for Alamein.

The Allies have the option of a nonhistorical deployment, but are penalized in victory points for utilizing it.

As historically, Allied units are slow to activate/respond, so the Axis Player must hit fast and hard to flank and/or penetrate the Allies' Gazala Line and finally take fortress Tobruk, to win.
