Inspired by people asking me for a list like
this i’m gonna start it now.
Additions will be made more or less frequently.
The order is chronological.

One of my characteristics is that i am curious -
i like trying things to do by myself.
So this brought me sometime also to game designing.

I started with game designing around 1988/1989 when i was working over years
on an own computer game for the Commodore Amiga with the name "Nach der Flut" (After the flood).
Finally there was a shareware version of this one.

Some time later i made a session over some weeks designing my first two board games ("Taxi" and "Charts").
All that wasn’t very professional (f. e. testing just with friends) but fun.
And i was lucky because both games had some kind of release.
And from that point on i was infected ...

Punch-out sheet, released by Goldsieber Spiele/Spiele aus Timbuktu 2001.

Although i keep things i don’t use in mind for probably later use, most of my expansions are created after the release of the basic game.
Same here.

I was insisting very strong at that moment for the release of the "Kardinal & König Kartenspiel" (Web of Power card game) by Goldsieber Spiele.
They didn’t want to but at least they made the little expansions for "Kontor" and "Web of Power".

Punch-out sheet expansion, released by Goldsieber Spiele/Spiele aus Timbuktu 2001.

This was a fair special. There also was a little tinn figure of the King (from the cover).
I used this idea later also for the 3 and 4 player expansion for the basic game.

Punch-out sheet, released by Spiele aus Timbuktu 2001.
Rereleased as board game by Spiele aus Timbuktu 2005.

This one is themewise inspired by the classic computer game Populous.
Sometimes i do like to integrate some of my preferences. Even if they are just small details.
During the process i made a lot of experiments with different kind of tiles: triangular, rectangular or two-sided as a just-two-player-version.

It was a hard decision to realise this one as a punch-out sheet.
This one was defentely at the limit.
Especially if you use card board.

Punch-out sheet, released by Spiele aus Timbuktu 2001.
Rereleased as "Richelieu" by Ravensburger 2003.

For those who know the two-player game "Richelieu":
Suprisingly the parent "Kardinal & König Kartenspiel" (Web of power card game) was for 3 to 5 players and not for 2 players at all!
For two players it would have needed a special variant rule.
Nowadays i tend offering variants like these in the final release.

My idea for the translation from the board game to a card game was not to do it one by one.
I wanted to keep just the spirit to have in the end a connected but different game. Not a clone in just a different format.

There are some more differences to the remake, i will tell you a little bit more about later in the "Richelieu" section.

Board game, released by Queen Games 2001.

In the beginning of the production i was also involved in the graphics.
Finally i had to quit this and the before blue cover got redrawn and red.
Some of my work especially in the board remained basically.

The starting point was again a concept for strict simplicity.
And i wanted to have it good to plan, therefore the frequently moving figures without any exception and the bonus cards appeared.

I remember working very long at the covering idea to get it working as i wanted.
I liked this very much from the start and so i had to kill another nice idea.
I hope i can pick up sometime for a different design.
That happens very often. A lot mostly small ideas are waiting for a second or third chance.

It was he first big game where the time until the first prototype was extremely long. This effect still lasts. A bit risky, if you spend too much time and then when playing the first time the prototype the game idea could be too weak.

Update: I just reworked this one. Stayed mainly like the original release except a better balancing. The rats from "Rat hot" didn‘t make it in the game. Nice plan but didn‘t fit well.

Expansion, released by Spiele aus Timbuktu 2002.

Again the problem was the less interest by Goldsieber Spiele to release this one. So, i had to release it by my own again.

I experimented a lot with multiple player versions after the release of the basic game.
But suprisingly just a few restriction and the needed additional card sets for the 3rd and 4th player were enough to make it working.

Bidding card game, released by Spiele aus Timbuktu/Agentur Vielfalt 2002.
Rerelease by Riogrande Games in preparation.

When i get asked which of my own games i do like than "Mogul" is always part of.
From the designers’ point of view i am a little proud about the bidding mechanism:
paying a coin into the middle to stay in the auction or taking the money out of the middle.
It is always very difficult to find something that simple but already resulting big fun and tension.

In a posting before i already mentioned that i’m not a big fan of tables or other helping constructs.
In Mogul is an example of my kind of tea:
the value of stocks is just regulated by the number of the cards owned by the players.
If someone sells stocks the value declines automatically.
So, sometimes my games look simple but i always spent most of the designing time making it look simple without loosing the game depth.

The remake by Riogrande Games is long time on the schedule and i hope it finally will be released this year.
The graphical design is already done and i made some nice changes making it a medium size boardgame.

The scoring track from the original prototype.

Small board game, released by Spiele aus Timbuktu/Agentur Vielfalt 2002.
Remake of the same titled release of 2001.

Three games with the same theme: trains.
That was the idea when releasing "Mogul", "Crazy Race" and "Station Manager".
And also the continuing cover artwork through all three boxes.

Therefore the parent "Crazy Race" which dealt with monsters doing a race had to be changend themewise.
Others i didn’t really change.

This project was only able to be realised because of a friend supporting it.
When we had to decide for the three games the later by Winsome Games released "Inter Urban" was also one of the candidates.

The third one in the train series is a bit dry in the graphics.
That is clearly one thing which could have been better.

Childrens game, released by Haba 2002.

At nighttime i even sometimes dream of designing games and sometimes i remember a little bit of the just dreamt idea the mornig after.
Unfortunately usually very silly and useless stuff.
I remember the idea of making a figure with your hand inside a black bag and the other players have to guess what figure it is.
Very silly as i said before.

"Grab bag" also deals with bags and hands in it. But does it much better as my dream idea.
The whole game works with nearly one idea nevertheless it needed two designers (my wife and me) to create it :-)
The rules are that simple that a 3-pics-summary printed on the bags which describes the whole game.

Reaction game, released by Goldsieber Spiele 2002.
Remake of "Zock!" released 1999.

One of my designing preferences are reaction games.
Which i do also like to play from time to time.
Because of the very different abilities of players in that type of games it is always dificult to find ways to compensate that general problem.

The differences to the parent "Zock!" is quite big.
With no restrictions in the material (in opposite to the parent) it was able to add different kind of exercises to fulfill.
From easy to difficult and from extremly fast to slow.

Board game, released by Clementoni 2003.

An interesting cooperation by surprise.
I had a compete finished prototype called "London Underground" (!) with easy gameplay and was already offering this to publishers.
By chance i showed this one also to Leo Colovini although his company wasn’t really able to release a game like that by there own.

Leo was interested but wanted to make something more complex out of it. So, we both started changing the game dramatically.
The result was the most complex game i was involved so far.
The funny thing is that just 5, 6 years ago complex games were difficult to release and
we finally found in Clementoni a quite unusual publisher for that kind of games.

Unfortunately they did some faults in the pre-production. Most of them could be solved, the yellowish board coloration remained.

Two-Player card game, released by Ravensburger Spiele 2003.
Rereleased as "Drive" by Simply Fun 2005.

Sometimes you’re lucky that you can find the ideal publisher for a specific game.
With "Crazy Chicken" i had the hope that this will also lead (with some more luck) to a classic game.
Classic games are that hard to have.
Just a few games make it over the time.
Unfortunately the just started two-players series worked but was very controversial at Ravensburger
and they stopped it just after 2 years.

Later the development person asked me for a 3 and 4 player version for a relaunch as a mulitplayer game.
This was possible (with 3 and 4 players you just have to modify the game end conditions).
Nevertheless the plans were discarded.

For the prototype them i had no idea, so i made medley of animals from my published games.

Bidding game, released by Days of Wonder 2003.

Another co-work with Bruno Faidutti dealing with our preferences for cards with a lot of text.
Because of the pre-history of our first game "Draco & Co." was mainly a Michael-game,
during the development "Dragonstones" got more a Bruno-game.
It was also dealt a little bit as a follower for the great "Citadel".

At the time DoW was quite short in business but already invested a lot in game material and graphics,
what became fastly a kind of trademark for them.
So, the material was absolutely fantastic, something designers dream of ...
There was also a contest for additional cards which to really nice ideas.
Some got painted and released as pdfs and one even got printed.

I think DoW was quite happy with the sales althought they decided to concentrate on their bigger games.
Therefore Bruno and me even designed a board game version of that one.
But didn’t get released until now.

A lot more infos about development:

Card game, released by Abacusspiele 2003.

Coloretto took a long time although i was not working all the time on it.
I had a vague concept that got more and more focussed during the development: An always changing situation depending on the just played cards.
Sometimes it should be better to leave early and sometimes not.

Over the time i had several different games dealing with that idea.
The games got discarded but the concept always kept in mind until the next try.

Finally i was really happy to have a good result because of all the investment i did in that.
It happens again and again that you have an interesting concept but never have a good working game in the end.

I kept the game very clean of special cards, there are just two in.
Nevertheless there might be space for more of them.
So, at the moment we’re doing a little contest for special cards on Boardgamegeek:

Someone was asking for this one.
Well, every fair i’m trying to meet a publisher i never met before.
It rarely leads to releases but it is always fun
because there are a lot of nice people around.
So, meeting John Bohrer was an impressive example for that :-)

InterUrban was a game which missed shortly being part of my train game-trilogy.
The development with WG was very straightforward.
John just wanted to make some small changes to my original prototype
which were ok for me.

In the end it became my game with the least number of copies sold (50 or 100 i don’t know the exactly "print-run").
But i like projects like that!

Board game, released by Abacusspiele 2003.

It is a little bit confusing when i look in the early prototype box of "Paris Paris".
The reason is that i started with a Hanse-theme
So, if i look into the box i always double check if the label is the correct one and not holding the later designed "Hansa" in my hand.
The reason was that Paris Paris got lighter than expected and a touristic theme became the better option for me.
But i loved the Hanse-theme, so i pick it up later when creating "Hansa".

On the box is a hidden self-portrait.

We also made a complete more antique looking redesign but it wasn’t published.

Two-player card game, released as "Richelieu" by Ravensburger 2003.
Remake of the "Kardinal & König Kartenspiel" released 2001.

At that time Ravensburger was looking for 2-player games to start a new product line.
So, i reworked some multiplayer games/prototypes especially for two (Richelieu & Crazy Chicken) and offer these.

Due some circumstances Stefan Brück from Alea overtook the development work.
We left Crazy Chicken as it was (I still like his decision for the chicken artwork very much).
But we made Richelieu in a big session a even a bit more straight than i had reworked it before.
More Ravensburger-style.

Since last year i’m offering on my site a 3 and 4 player-variant for Richelieu.
So, history-wise this wasn’t a big deal because it was a multiplayer-game before :-)
This variant can even be played on yucata.de

Board game, released by Queen Games 2003.

This was already my second try for a game about industrialization.
One of the themes that interests me personally more than others might.
The first idea finally went in a totally different direction and lead to "Dschunke," released by the same publisher.
But i will pick up the basic idea again for a special project: A one-copy-game just for me (and my friends). Perhaps i’ll have the time this summer.

An earlier board, at that moment splited in different boards and with water ("Wasser") as resource - gives the hint to the more complex resource management in the beginning

Industria was originally a card game and i added the board afterwards to get a better overview.
This can be still seen - there are some redundancies left.
The original prototype name was "Industialization".

The layout of the illustrator Hans-Jörg Brehm

The rerelease will be in may 2010 by Ystari with the name "Industry". There are several changes especially including no text elements on the board and a easier handling.

Just added a new entry for "Industry" at the end of the Geeklist.

DSCHUNKE - DAS LEGESPIEL

Download, released by Spiele aus Timbuktu 2003.
Rereleased as "Rat hot" by Queen Games 2005.

As often there was something that kept me beyond the release.
This time it was in "Dschunke" and it was the stacking mechanism.
so i was thinking of doing something else with it.

In "Dschunke" the stacking thing was a bit reduced.
So the idea was to expand it and make a whole game out of it.
The result was "Dschunke - das Legespiel" for two players.

Collectors box, released by Spiele aus Timbuktu 2003.

It would be nice for designers creating games as simple like this one ;-)
Because it is just an empty box!
Made for collectors of the Spiele aus Timbuktu edition of punch-out sheets.

Or like this ...
Just empty cards!
(for prototype designs)

Two player game, released by Queen Games 2004.
Remake of "Dschunke - Das Legespiel" from 2003.

This one i really one i like to play on holidays.

The rats i added in coparison to the parent game.
This was an addition which made a really big difference.
Soon i will start to work again on the "Dschunke" boad game again,
perhaps it could be even a nice addition for that as well.

Kids game, released by Haba 2004

When i get asked, where a designer gets his ideas from i usually talk about "Lucky sock dip" as an example for ideas updated from real life.
Of course sorting socks is a thing everybody knows (especially a problem if you have just socks of one colour like us :-)) and if you do it as a race you already have a game. So, that’s nearly the whole game.

That’s the second question often asked: "how long will it take to design a game?" This is a good example of developing a game in just a day. But - of course - it can take years as well.

The second most successful game i made.
