This geeklist covers everything to do with the "Pasteboard and Plastic VIII" all-day gaming fest which was held on Saturday 7th March, 2009 at the Scout hut in Saltdean (Brighton, UK).

The parent list for this event is the Pasterboard and Plastic Metalist. You can reach information about all the P&P events from there.

Thanks to all the gamers who attended for making it such a successful day. Special thanks as always must go to Dick for organising another smooth running, intensely enjoyable Pasteboard & Plastic event.

All additions and comments are most welcome. These geeklists work best when the attendees take a few minutes to add games played or bought, pictures, comments and so on.

The remaining Pasteboard & Plastic events planned for '09 are...
PnP 9: Saturday July 11
PnP10: Saturday November 21
I hope to see you there!

The entry fees from all of the P&P events support the 42nd Brighton (Saltdean) Scouts.

Pasteboard & Plastic is itself attended by The Board Game Club. Thanks guys - it was good to see that (one of) you could hang around this time!

Our first game of the day. I arrived to find Dick explaining this game with Helen, Jim and Damon in atttendance, so I got a cup of tea in and joined in.

This is a really neat screw your neighbour type of auction game, but there is also an element of co-operation as your tile and worker placements go best when some of you are co-operating and some players have missed the boat - just like Carcassonne.

I was new to this and got battered. Dick won with 95, with Jim on 91.

This game was recommended to me by a fellow geek who has repeatedly told me since I first met him that this game has been in his top 10. A glance at the geek some time ago reinforced his view that this was a great game.

I tracked it down a few weeks ago, and this was my second game. I agree with Steve, this is a great game. What a combination - a screw the others auction game!

We hadn't even finished Santiago when we had to have a break for new game excitement when Pete from The BoardGameClub turned up.

This was the first game that I'd ordered from the BoardGameClub guys to deliver to P&P8. I have a few people lined up who I think will play this with me, including some work colleagues, so I figured that I could go the whole hog and buy my own copy, rather than just playing someone else's!

The good news is that I already had 2 games of this tentatively planned within a couple of hours of owning it. It's always good when that happens!

My second BGC purchase, this game looks absolutely fantastic and plays well too! It's a light game, but the look and feel of it mean that serious gamers can pick it up easily and it may well be one of those games that looks interesting enough and fun enough to snag new players.

I played Al's version of this - as my last game of the day.

A huge laugh of a game - as massive statues were left abandoned in quarries by locals who couldn't count to three. Stone hats were hauled across the island only to find the workers couldn't remember which statue to put them on. And the last trees of the land were cut down just for a few more VPs.

A great end to a really good day.

Played my fourth game of Giants at P and P and, once again, had an excellent time.

I am hoping that soon I will play a game of this where I don't make a monumental error of some variety, usually based around my inability to count to 3!

I really enjoyed this - fun game, but needing some thought and tactics too and really nice pieces to boot. Will happily play it again. The fact I was a joint winner with Keith in no way influences my opinion. Just wish the hats didn't remind me of bottle stoppers from our school chemistry lab.

A new game for all of us, Gihan taught us how to play and Al, Ron and I were keen learners. We got through most of the situations and rules that you would encounter and then pretty much had to call it a day due to other pre-arranged commitments. We're now all primed to play the full game on a tuesday night, which was exactly what we wanted.

Plenty of buzz about this at the moment, on the Geek, on recent podcasts, Counter magazine, you name it. The good thing is that everyone is saying good things about it, which may come as no surprise as this is another quality release from Martin Wallace. This was my 3rd pre-order from The BoardGameClub. A couple of the army guys legs have come off in transit, but I should be able to get them replaced easily enough.

I am really looking forward to playing this as the 3 player aspect is intriguing. So Dick, who's our 3rd player and when do we want to play this?

Mike bought this one along and rounded us up for a game. It's Talisman without the dice and appears to have quite a bit of depth to it - we only played the basic game. Mike trounced us, getting his 5 cards with Ron on 3 and Gihan and I on 2. That flying carpet was pretty neat!

I'm not a huge fan of this sort of game, but as the genre goes, this was a decent enough job.

True enough. It was "The Game of P&P7" for sure. This time, I didn't even see it (other than my copy, of course). It still gets played on our Tuesday night meetups, so I reckon there's life in it yet (fortunately).

I'm quite interested to see who stumps up for the "expansion" and if they already own the original game!

Whilst my Mrs was trying to work out if I was going to be the taxi service for the night, I figured I'd better get another game in. I'd not played Wasabi! before, but Miguel and Al had, so they quickly showed me what the game was about and we got stuck in.

The game nipped along quite nicely, I was making a fair lot of dishes, but I was not benefitting from the wasabi cubes like Miguel was and that was the difference in the end. Miguel and I both needed only a 4 and a 5 when the board had filled up, but Miguel ended on 27, I had 23 and Al had 22. Nice tight game!

A great fun frustrating game! This was the second time I'd played (previously a 4-player) and it was definitely better with three! Having more space and turns means making dishes feels considerably more possible. As usual, Al and I realised that we'd missed important rules the previous time we'd played... Reading rulebooks. Tchoh. What a pain...

Although I've only played the once, I have to agree about the player numbers. I think that it'd feel way too crowded with 4 players, it as it felt pretty tightly packed with just the 3 of us on the board.

This game's not been released in the UK as I understand it, but we had it and played it. I think that it was Mike's copy, as he's recently come back from the States.

This is a simple enough dexterity game which took about 15 minutes to set up and play. We were split on technique and were not sure if sliding or flicking was the best and there was a wide variety of quality evident in our attempts to get the sliders near the middle of the target zone. We played the version where if you get in the hole in the middle then that slider comes off, so that was an added twist.

Miguel's skill came out on top, with Al and I vanquished.

I played this one against Tom and George - I'd expected my years of experience to easily overcome their youthful enthusiasm. I was wrong - I lost easily.

It's a fun game for 15 minutes - but not one I'm going to be adding to my collection.

Also - The picture on the box is misleading. If someone flicked a slider that hard, the opponent would not be smiling, they'd be covering their face shouting 'Stop it, you nutter!'

(And thanks to Mike for the use of the game).

I found this game highly entertaining, requiring the light touch of a surgeon, the tactics of a general and the violence of a mindless thug. OK its mini bowling but with twists. I need a break from the brain burners. I was later Gric’d by Keith so good job my brain had some rest.

Oh and when I went off to grab quick break all the other players had scored maximum points upon my return – suspicious.

I played a couple of games of this and enjoyed it. Thanks Mike for importing it. I can't think why it isn't available here. I would imagine it would have wide enough appeal to sell through Woolies. Er...well not Woolies (RIP) any more but not just specialist game shops. I described it as the poor man's Crokinole at the time and there is a big difference in price for a good little dexterity game. Played a couple of different variants both fun.

Well - this one should put those youngsters in their place.

Tim and Heidi joined in for their first ever game of the Trucker; and I explained the rules as far as I could remember them (which probably wasn't quite far enough). All the expansion tiles had been mixed in as well - so that meant lots of pieces which I wasn't really sure what they did, but for those of you who've ever worked in interstellar spaceship design that's par for the course.

After the three trips into deep space, the George and Tom team won this with about 45 credits, with Heidi coming a close second. Tim came in a distant third with about 3 credits, and somehow I managed to get even less.

Still a fun time for all involved as far as I could make out.

Distant third is an accurate assessment. We played a rather loose interpretation I think. I'm not sure any of us knew what ALL the tiles represented. In my case it didn't really matter as most of them were quickly wiped out by pesky meteors. Tom kindly pointed out that my first ship would just have spun in circles if fired up and that was one of my better attempts. My final ship was systematically eroded by disaster until it vanished up its own rocket exhaust. Somehow my invisible ship still got a point or three though. Chaotic but very funny. It would have been a different story if fate had pointed the nasty stuff at my one bit of solid shielding but they missed it every time.

After a couple of hours break - I was back in the evening for some grown-up games with grown-up people. Well, Miguel and Howard seem to fit that description - and so to my first ever game of this supposed classic, using the original German version (with real named actors).

The verdict was very good. I'd certainly play this one again - and a possible future re-theming was discussed with gusto.

One of the things I like about Pasteboard is the chance to play brand new games AND the classics that for a variety of reasons don't often get a showing at the regular weekly sessions...and I'm very pleased I got to play this one. Plays quickly and as usual with Knizier games, it all fits together so very neatly and pleasingly.

End scores were pretty close at the end, I know I came last with 79 but definitely will be looking to play again!

(oh, and in terms of retheme...I can't reveal too much, I'm sure you'll NEVER guess what we had in mind...let's just say, unicorns and pixies WERE mentioned...)

I didn't play this but I have to comment. I drag this along to every PnP 'cos it's my favourite game and I am ever hopeful. Crabro gave me a nudge to alert me to you lot playing it, literally behind my back. How could you? This heretical talk of re-themes is just rubbing salt in the wound.

Next P+P (if not, before) - we'll make it the first game of the day if you like.

Miguel should have his 1980s Goth bands of the West Midlands re-theme done by then

13. Board Game: Le Havre [Average Rating:8.09 Overall Rank:6]

A good friend brought this back from Essen for me, and I have only managed four games of it, and those in the last three weeks.

I now understand why the rules warn against a five player game with new players, but what the heck, everyone there (at that time) were big boys and girls, and so we went ahead with it anyway :-)

Ok, I exaggerated for effect when I pointed out that a particularly slow (7th) round took 20 minutes, and there were 13 more to go - it actually took 16! However, my comment had the desired effect, the next round took three minutes, and from then on the game picked up.

However, I agree with the general opinion that this is a game NOT for five players. The geek 'number of players' poll indicates the sweet spot is 3, so I am now looking forward to a 3-P. I do not think that any of the others were put off by the experience, as it is easy to see that the game has plenty of potential.

I'm happy to give this another outing - though next time I would like to sit with the board the right way up. With lots of rules it is hard to take them all it at first so hardly surprising 2 of us scooted over the bit about "resources only score if you ship them". Still, I wasn't last which I count as a hit in a new, heavy game. Mind you, as I came 3rd out of 5, then playing with less players next time will see me in my usual place.

This game has fascinated me, and was one of the four games that I bought on Saturday.

Our only game was fun and frustrating at the same time. Fun, because it is good to frustrate another player by playing a card to complete your rules, whilst screwing his/hers/theirs. Frustrating, though, when another player screws your rule whilst completing theirs...

Overall I thought it was a great little five-player and I hope to see a few more plays soon.

I was presented with two fivers during the day which I had forgotten were owed to me. I have also been watching Monty Python again, so when I saw Monty Python Fluxx in BoardGameClubs box, I 'invested' my tenner into a copy. I appreciate that this is a somewhat relaxed use of the word 'invest'.

The fourth game was Mike's Lancashire Railways.

Nice little game which was new to me. Good fun, easy to learn and simple to play. What's more I managed to win (despite messing up the last turn) so I have fond memories of this one. Winning wasn't exactly a consistent theme for my PnP VIII

I have only played this game a couple of times, and yet again enjoyed it. This is on my 'mental' wish list - I would buy a copy if it was cheap - I already have far too many unplayed games.

I create a good early lead (I was lucky to be pointing in the correct direction when I was dealt 4 x 3 forwards) but as always, Jim managed to out think me and create a small but significant lead. Good win, Jim!

I was involved in a rather disjointed game of this but despite some misunderstandings (I didn't realise that WAS a pit blush ), being shot to bits by a robo tag-team and terrible cards which didn't allow for forward motion at all at times, I really enjoyed this game. It was great fun and I would think of buying it despite this disastrous first outing The game wasn't helped either by being broken up by at least two other games and a meal.

This has become a bit of a tradition at PnP. We had two games; 9 players in the first, and 17 in the second.

The second game was one of the very best we have had. The werewolves were close to winning, but suspicions were aroused! Werewolf Al realised this and sacrificed Werewolf Mike to throw the villagers off the scent. Villager Gihan spotted this, and sadly for the villagers, could not talk the rest of the mob into believing him. After stringing Gihan up, the villagers lost... Cries of Whooooo-oooo filled the room, even the dead Werewolf resurrected himself to join in the celebration!

This amounts to Pasteboard and Plastic heresy but Werewolf is not really my cup of tea. I prefer board games myself. Still I can see the attraction and as my list on the first PnP probably shows I did enjoy my first outing. In this one, despite admiring the skill of some of the other players belatedly, I didn't feel all that involved. Maybe because I was a humble and blameless villager each time and no-one suspected me of anything else. Much to enjoy in the antics of the others I concede but my overwhelming memory is of shame for contributing to the lynching of Helen and Gihan who put up very lucid cases which I stupidly distrusted.

I've got this one tucked away somewhere - I've only played it a few times mainly because of those tiny icons.
Rule one of play testing - get some old blokes to try to read it without squinting.

Not the first time I have played this but I wasn't prepared for how fast Jim assembled his dice and won. This time I failed to get an extra die from my first turn and never caught up. I was first player and it was over before that got round to me again. I don't remember having any real problem with the cards in either game I've played but then I work mostly from the player aid. If you know what you want someone with sharper eyes can find it for you. By the way short sight is not restricted to old blokes, I might be one now but I've been myopic since infancy.

The last game of the evening, played as a filler whilst the last table completed their game.

This game can be really nasty; at one point I was reduced to two cards by another player. Unfortunately that player did not know that one of my two cards enabled me to swap hands with any other player. Of course, when I played that card, it only left me one card in my hand to swap! Not that it did me any good - I still lost...

Ideal finish I thought. Hardly any rules to teach or learn. Simple gameplay and a bit of fun. This was the other one I won but as Crabro kindly pointed out, I should have as it was my game. We also learned a little about the French revolution. I am still ignorant as to the part played by "P*ss Boy" though. Shame on Sir Percy Blakeney for rescuing all those darned aristos from The Terror and leaving poor little PB to his fate. Crabro's attempt at psychological warfare by attacking my supposed francophilia failed from lack of ammo as it transpires he knows even less about the nation across the ditch than The Simpsons

I'd be up for a rematch anytime, I'm even sufficiently impressed to consider getting my own copy (it's my birthday next month).

Well, who would have thought that the most laughs of the day would come from playing Guess Who!

Miguel had done another wonderful job converting a game into a sci fi bonanza, replacing the usual characters with a host of intergalactic stars from Darth Vadar to Johnnie 5. I won my games, though Miguel may call issue with my answer to his question "Does your character need a comb at all?" I mean, really, asking me about the necessity of brushing your hair, what were you thinking Miguel!?!

I had great laughs with this too, but was 'gutted' to lose my games after my opponents failed to play correctly! Rules were that questions were primarily based around film/tv plot and character, with questions about appearance allowed in moments of desperation... Ian forgot that Yoda HAD died on-screen, and Al somehow claimed that Sulu does not need a comb! See pic below and make up your own mind!

In case you missed the game in action, here's the rest of the images...

There's a lot to be said for that. We spend a fortune on games (I can't even imagine the combined value of all the games we had assembled in the scout hut last Saturday, let alone the price of the ones we all left at home) yet the game that got the biggest group reaction and the most laughs, most banter etc. was some kids game from the seventies.

Sorry Pete - looks like the next P&P will be supported by the local charity shop, who are busy sourcing downfall and buckaroo as we speak!

Dave had brought this to one of our Tuesday nights just after last years Essen and I thought it was a cracking game...I was very happy to be able to get in another play of it, along with Andy and Paul (from the Piddinghoe Gamers?) and Dave.

I'm not sure if my game had improved at all having played it once before, all long term planning tends to go out of the window when it comes round to your turn again for some reason...must keep up! Must keep up!

Dave won by a fairly comfortable stretch, a good two or three turns ahead of the rest of us. I'd very much like to play a series of these in a campaign type setting. I'm sure there's more accurate racing terminology than "campaign" but I'm as sporty as a bowl of thinly cut potato wedges.

As the evening drew on, Howard held up this box and Ron, Gihan and myself gathered round to play.

Despite a board that looked a bit like Gloria Mundi crossed with a card driven wargame, this was more fun than either...

Although you need to make as much money as you can, the aim is to own as many vineyards as possible... along the way, you specialise in different grape varieties, sell wine and try to influence the market price. If you're lucky, you get handed free vineyards by the government, but this isn't as great as it sounds, because in order to qualify for free vineyards, you have to be losing! Turn order and how it changes is very important in Vino. Sometimes, it helps to make less money one turn in order to gain the upper hand in the selling order onthe next turn...

I somehow ended up winning (after the cash tie-breaker) but I may need to share the gold medal with Ron who made a couple of shifts in the market that earned me some hefty profits...

Thanks to every who turned up to play, help at and support this event. We raised £100 for the 42nd Brighton (Saltdean) Scout Group.

The nice thing for me about this event is that it is now well enough established that it more or less runs itself. That means that I have more time to play games!

And thanks to Dave for creating and maintaining these PnP geeklists.

Dick

Thanks for organising a great event Dick. I’m looking forward to the next one and catching up with the crowd again.

Thanks again for a great day. This time I seemed to loose everything I played, sometimes quite spectacularly, oh well there's always next time...

Thanks Dick and all who helped make it another successful PnP. I had a great day, playing ten games in all. There was much hilarity and an acceptable number of cups of tea and chips I also went away with a new game (Battlestar Galactica) and an expansion thank to Board Game Club: That has become an essential part of the Pasteboard and Plastic experience as far as I'm concerned. As always I have got new games to add to my wishlist too. There were some being played that looked great (Conan, Munchkin Quest, Giants, Leader 1, Guess Who? ) but I didn't get to play... Roll on Pasteboard and Plastic IX.
