I've been interested in gaming the Mexican-American War ever since I read "Gone for Soldiers" by Jeff Shaara (his best in my opinion). One of the most interesting aspects of the Mexican-American War is the cast of characters that will become famous years later during the American Civil War. George Meade, Ulysses S. Grant, Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson and of course Robert E. Lee.

Unfortunately, there aren't that many games that cover this interesting period in the history of North America. This is changing, however, with two games shipping soon from GMT (see below).

I was hoping to start a list of the games that cover the Mexican-American War AND also list books that cover the subject. Please feel free to add.

I was hoping Bowen Simmons would design a Mexican-American War game to transition from Napoleonic warfare to the American Civil War (although I'm not too unhappy, The Guns of Gettysburg looks like it will be awesome!).

My Interest in the Mexican-American War has recently been sparked again by the release of Halls of Montezuma(pre-orders should be shipping now!!). I'm a big fan of card driven games (Wilderness War and Empire of the Sun) being my favorites) so I'm really looking forward to this one!

Playing time and complexity of Halls of Montezuma is supposed to be along the same lines as We the People so it should be relatively quick playing compared to other card driven games.

After reading Gone for Soldiers I looked into gaming the war and found this gem of a game.

Gringo! is a great place to start if you're interested in Richard Berg's Great Battles of the American Civil War series (GBACW).

The game covers most of the major battles of the conflict including:

Buena Vista,
Monterey,
Cerro Gordo,
El Molino del Rey
and Chapultepec.

I really like this game. The scenarios are small and play quickly (2-3 hours) and the GBACW system is lots of fun.

If you are interested in Gringo! then give it a try for free with a print & play scenario Battle of Churubusco (www.gmtgames.com/cwgr/churubusco.html). This scenario was included (complete with map and counters!) in C3i Magazine No. 16 (2005).

This expansion covers the battles of:

Puebla (first Cinco de Mayo!) battle vs. French forces
Contreras,
Palo Alto
and Resaca de la Palma.

This should be a great expansion for Gringo! and pre-orders should be shipping soon from GMT.

Published in S&T 127. There's some good ideas in this game but the map needed lots of work to be accurate. There's a article at Web Grognards that allows one to fix many of the map errors if one wanted to make a whole new map.
