A lot of people have written much about this game and its extensions. I've even given it almost the place of honour on my games that you really can't play on a small table geeklist here.

It's a great game, and how it has about a zillion expansions. What I thought I'd do was create a geeklist with details and pictures from each of the expansions and include a poll so it could collect everyone's wisdom about which expansions are essential, nice to have, or a bit average, and which play nicely with others.

So, thumb your favourite expansion, fill out the polls, and generally have at it! In particular if the polls don't capture things, please leave details in the comments.

Winner: Zelif

This is the original Arkham Horror game included as a historical curiosity. The more modern fantasy flight game includes a lot more chrome, a more sophisticated movement and object system and a lot of housekeeping tokens (and expansions).

The basic theme of the game remains intact, though, and some people have reported a preference for playing the simpler original.

The base game, a remake of an earlier game with quite a few updates, vastly better production values, a lot more theme, and the possibility for lots of expansions.

For those who came in late, AH is a cooperative game in which the players act as investigators trying to get to the bottom of the sudden horrors overwhelming the little New England town of Arkham. If they do not succeed in nipping these horrors in the bud, then their only chance to save the world is to defeat the Great Old One as it breaks through into our universe.

At the moment, the base game is essential to play with any of the expansions. I'll add a poll if this changes.

The first big-box expansion, Dunwich adds the sleepy town of Dunwich to the base game. This expansion had a bunch of innovations including the requirement for investigators to travel to Dunwich by train to deal with monsters there and the Dunwich Horror, not quite a Great Old One, but far worse than any normal monster in the game.

Some new mechanics included in Dunwich are Madness and Injury tokens. When investigators lose all their stamina or sanity they have the option of taking a permanent physical or mental injury card (shown below) rather than losing half their items and clue tokens.

Now as the first optional expansion, this one comes with two polls.

Poll
1. Is this expansion important to getting the best Arkham Horror experience?
Absolutely! This is a must-have.
Mostly, this is good, but you can do without it.
You don't really need it.
Avoid, this doesn't help the game.
2. Does this expansion play well with others?
Yes! it goes well with any other expansions.
No. You should probably avoid mixing this expansion with others

Kingsport is another big-box expansion. This time adding the coastal town of Kingsport as an additional board. This has several locations and can only be reached by railway again.

Rather than adding a new large monster to the game, Kingsport adds rifts, which gradually build up in the town and if not stopped appear and roam around Arkham, spawning monsters as they move.

Kingsport also adds Epic battle cards, which add a series of events to the final battle with the Great Old One causing variable effects (mostly bad) each round of the battle.

The first small-box expansion. This expansion adds the horrific events that occur in Arkham when a strange egyptian exhibit is brought to the local museum. As a nice touch, the extra event and item cards can be mixed in with the main decks or left aside and only activated when the exhibit is visiting.

"A new play is coming to Miskatonic University, and anyone who's anyone will be there for the opening performance. However, there's something sinister about this play, and the people who see it come back a little... different."

This small box expansion adds Heralds who prepare the way for the Great Old One's return as well as madness that can strike old allies within the game, turning them mad or worse. All the new monsters and changes fit within the structure of the play engulfing Arkham

A new cult comes to Arkham. Investigators can become members and try to use the powers they gain to aid in the investigation, but beware the threat of corruption.

Another small-box Arkham expansion that adds monsters and items in addition to the new cult. Plays on the main Arkham board.

Details are a little thin on the ground because this expansion hasn't been released yet, but I'm adding it to the list ready for the moment!

Apart from the coastal town of Innsmouth that features in many of Lovecraft's stories, this expansion adds Personal Stories for each investigator. These require them to spend time away from the main game completing personal investigations to gain benefits.
