1. Board Game: Die Macher [Average Rating:7.68 Overall Rank:96]
Gigantus Machus
Canada
flag msg tools

Die Macher is an election game where the players themselves are not up for election; instead, players control political bosses guiding their parties through seven stepped elections. Players primarily deal with money, which is channeled in a variety of ways to make more money, bolster support, control media, and harm each other by way of shady political operatives. The game is seven elections long and players can influence the current election and the next one to three elections that will occur after it. Imagine playing seven election games at once where you can really only control one or two games at a time, and, in addition to this burden, there is a larger game concerning the national opinion that binds each election together.

2. Board Game: 1960: The Making of the President [Average Rating:7.56 Overall Rank:109]
Gigantus Machus
Canada
flag msg tools
In 1960: The Making of the President, you take on the role of one of these great protagonists vying for the right to lead his country into the heart of the Cold War. However, it is not just foreign policy that poses a challenge to American leadership; this is also an era of great social turmoil and progress. As the United States continues to build upon the promise of its founding, candidates must contend with the question of civil rights and balance their positions on social justice against the need for valuable Southern electoral votes. Of course, the ever-present issue of the economy also rears its ugly head, and both Nixon and Kennedy will compete to be the candidate with the voters' pocket books in mind.

3. Board Game: Twilight Struggle [Average Rating:8.34 Overall Rank:1]
Gigantus Machus
Canada
flag msg tools
Twilight Struggle is a 2-player, card-driven game where one player plays the role of the US, the other the USSR during the cold war (1945-89).

The game is played to either a 20 victory point differential or until DefCon is degraded to 1 on a player’s turn, thereby triggering globalthermonuclear war. The player who allowed defcon to be degraded on his/her turn loses the game. If this doesn’t happen, the player who achieves the 20 point differential wins. In addition, if a player has control of Europe, that player wins the game when Europe is scored.

The heart of the game comes by establishing influential control of different countries on the map through the use of your cards. Each side starts with some influence in countries throughout the world, and some discretionary influence to use in Eastern/Western Europe respectively. Each side is able to look at their first hand of cards before playing their influence, which can be critical of course.

"A game of political intrigue set in the Soviet Politburo. Players secretly influence politicians, using them to exile other players politicians to Siberia, promote their own, or wheel and deal. The player who successfully gets their controlled Party Chief to wave 3 times at the May Day parade wins the game. Nice balance of chrome and playability, and the theme fits tightly."

A funny thing about this game is: You can win sometimes by doing absolutely nothing after your starting distribution of your influence. Like in real politics!

I've played this a few times but not enough to really see if it works or not.

The few times it's been played there has been a large time lag between plays, so on each occasion it was a learning exercise, rather than a 'proper' game

A recent reprint with much better components just came out from Zman. This is a cool little game that I know own both editions. It plays the politics angle a bit different as each ideology plays different and has different victory conditions. They also interact very differently with other ideologies. A good game that I need to get to the table more.

I think this is still one of the best political games. Uses the box as part of the game. Mainly a card game, where you campaign around areas of the USA trying to poll votes. You place the cards, representing the votes into the game box, under an overlay. In many ways one of the first Co-op games. You can play 4 player where you play as two teams, one player running for President the other for VP on each team.

A reminder of the old saying 'Don't judge a book by it's cover'. I bought this game because I liked Mr President so much (See last geek list item)(Nope one before that). I looked at the components and read the rules and thought it looked awful. it sat in the bottom of a cupboard for several years until I finally got around to playing it.

Guess what? It's actually not a bad game. It's about the primaries rather than the actual election. Your trying to win your parties nomination. If you enjoy bluffing and games with a high screwage factor, this could be a game for you.

From the description:

The Republic of Rome simulates the politics of the Roman Senate during the republic. The players take the part of various factions and control the various powerful families of the time, who compete for state offices, military command, economic concessions and new adherents. To win the player must get their faction to become the most powerful in Rome. While doing this, however, a balance must be maintained. A hostile world situation, and the vagaries of the public of Rome means that the players must also cooperate so that Rome herself doesn't go down under this pressure. If Rome does not last, neither does the senate, and all players lose.

Haven't played yet. Tried once but got voted down pretty quickly by the rest of the crew who decided they were hungry for supper...

Since I haven't played it yet, I'll just include the game description:

Quote:
60 politicians of all colors stand for election in the 15 countries of the European Union: unimaginable benefits and positions of influence await their power brokers, for it is these Machiavellian lobbyists and self-appointed “leaders“ who hold the real power in the palms of their hands.

With no thought for party loyalties or manifestos they pull the strings of their politician puppets, paying only enough lip-service to the conventional rules of politics to keep the voters quiet.

Party scandals shamelessly arranged, press campaigns against innocent politicians, filthy intrigues to bring about the fall of opponents, the sudden favoring of surprise candidates better suited to government or to profitable leadership: these unscrupulous power brokers stop at nothing to form tactical coalitions. Cloaked in phony democracy, it all serves to gain total power over Europe.

Another view on some kind of politics: "Cat & Mouse chase between the police and the students during the confrontations of May 1968 in Paris.
The students player must reveal the "beach under the concrete" (sus les pavès, la plage - see picture below) while the police try to keep the order.
A very nice board and good components with a lot of humor."
