Two games of this were played on Friday, July 3d. People seem fascinated by the dice.

After a membership meeting, game play for July 4th started with the first of two games of Agricola. After playing several games, my impression is that, in part, your success depends on which occupations and minor improvements you're dealt. People can get carried away with these cards, though.
Following the second game (played as the last game of the day), group consensus was that fewer commodities would make the game more manageable without detracting from the play experience.
Oh, and Scot McConnachie finally won a game in a tight finish - two people were just one point behind him.

A learning game for most of the players, so it will take a few more plays to get a firm sense of the game. The mechanism for gaining money is interesting but it seems difficult to improve your train size given the length of the game. And, as always, I find the track selection a bit limited compared to 18xx.

While Euros dominated one side of the club, Scot (Spain), John (Britain) and Victor (France) whipped out a game of Wellington. From the chatter, the two battles of Madrid didn't go well for the French.

In a moment of indecision as to how long a game various people were looking for, a quick game of GtR took place. I still haven't made up my mind about this game, but I'm not convinced it's so much better than Race.

Monday we played Agricola again. I had Wood-fired Oven, Baker's Oven, Turnwrest Plow, and some card that gave me grain and vegetables, so I went for a baking strategy. I never cooked an animal (and never could) but I maxed grain and veggies, and I had a lot of animals at the end.
Victor had Charcoal Burner which gave him food and wood when anyone built an oven and Bread Seller which gave food when anyone baked. He got a lot of food off my actions and those of others, but I had an easy victory. Final score was something like 37-28-26-25-22.

Gaming on the 11th started off with another game of Steam. Players had a better handle on what they were doing, so there were no disasters as in last week's game. Some very heavy bidding for turn order as players fought for selection of train upgrade and urbanization.

Another five-player game of Agricola broke out, where none of the players really ever had a firm course of action. On the other hand, no-one wound up begging for food and final scores were reasonable, so something worked out.

Tuesday, July 14, a four player game of Steam. It appears that the player who capitalizes the the most finishes first or second and the player who capitalizes the least finishes last. Not that you can't kill yourself taking too much, but we are still taking too little.

Played this again the other night. Humans came within 1 turn of making their final jump away from Kobol but the damn Cylons managed to prevail by utterly crushing our morale.

Saturday the 18th started with a couple of three player games of Race to fill the time.
Later in the afternoon, the three people not playing wargames got at least one more game in. But maybe they played two. It's hard to tell sometimes when you're busy berating someone in The Napoleonic Wars.

Then a slightly different group of three played a couple of games of Glory. Boy, but Bill ran away with that second game.

Five of us spent most of the day engaged in a game of Nappy Wars. It ran four turns until a second appearance of Europe Exhausted brought an end to the game through the peace die-roll. For the first two turns, Russia held a slight lead, though by the end of the second turn the forward Russian army group had gotten eviscerated. Then in the third turn, Prussia entered the war on France's side. This is usually very, very good for France and not so good for Prussia. In this case, some good fortune in die rolls and lack of Russian troop strength allowed Prussia a lead at the end of turn three. He had managed to grab Grodno, Lublin and Krakow. France hadn't been able to make as much progress in central Europe as might be expected. However, things went down-hill for Prussia and France in turn four, which ended with the conquest of Prussia due to a Russo-Swedish army group in Berlin and British and Austrian flags littering the western end of the board. Britain wound up winning the game.
