I got done playing a game of Risk the other night and was a little frustrated.

A) The game took about 3 and a half hours to complete, which was too damn long
and
B) I just felt like we were going through the motions of every game of Risk I've ever played (surprise surprise, I won having conquered Australia before anyone else had a chance at a continent)

So, I figured there needed to be a list of games that didn't feel so... samey. I want to have fun with my friends, not roll my eyes during my friend's turn because I realized that him winning a particular battle just extended the game another hour. I've researched some picks from around BGG, but I want everyone else's opinion

Certainly looks similar with a dice-roll combat system.

The phrase "like Risk" has come up a lot when playing this in our group. Depends on how close you are looking. But if massive land grabbing conquest and ever changing empires is what you are after, I would recommend you check this out.

The AH/Hasbro combined version brings in plastic figures. I don't like Risk so much, but I really enjoy this game. Takes about the same amount of time as you won't finish this in under 3-4 hours most likely. However, what I do like is that you take on the role of a different empire in each era so you aren't just extending one empire over time. There are various mechanisms in place to help rein in the leader to some degree. It is a dicefest but with more chrome. It is also OOP and really expensive if you want the plastic figure version. The older, AH version, cardboard chit version can be had for less.

Good luck finding this one out there ^^
imo it is a LOT like risk, as you have different units distributed among provinces, you get reinforcements depending on the size of your empire (bigger size = more ressources = more reinforcements) and you'll have lots of dicerolling.
Sure, there are differences: different dice, different combat system, ressourcemanagement ..
However, whenever I play this, I get a feeling, that I'm playing a Japanese themed Risk ..

I'm surprised this hasn't been added to the list yet. It is considered by many, the best Risk-variant out there. I personally like Risk: Godstorm a bit better than this... but that's probably due to theme more than game play.

This game (along with Godstorm) has a set number of rounds, so the game does not go on forever. Throw in variable start order, generals, and special action cards... it's a winner.

You get 2 games in 1 with this game! The original rules are a very simple step above Risk, and the version II rules provide a more complex and completely different play experience.

An older Milton Bradley game that is a sister to Axis and Allies. As much as I like Axis and Allies, I think I prefer this game even a bit more. While it can still take time to play, there is a definite ending to the game as the invaders get dwindling forces and America becomes stronger. Sure, the script is the same each time, but the random cards, placement of lasers and initial choosing of invading forces give each game a different flavor each time. Plus you get bombers, SDI, helicopters, partisans, and hover tanks... how cool is that.

Asymmetric forces with different goals: the Empire must wipe out all the Rebels, the Rebels use to Force to find and capture the Emperor, and the Hutts are quietly trying to spread out through the galactic backwaters, hoping nobody notices them.

Plus, there's a fully operational Death Star that reduces planets to asteroid fields, but is susceptible to desperate Rebel attacks! What more could you ask for in a Risk game?

There are mixed reviews for this game, but generally people seem positive about it.

One thing that interests me is that killing an opposing king seems just as important as conquering his terrritory. I think one person on this site described the game as four player chess.

Check out Attack!, or the new and improved 2009 edition Attack! Deluxe Expansion. A comparative comment from my pictorial overview:
Quote:
After playing Attack!, I don't know why anyone in their right mind would go back to Risk. The step up in rules complexity is not significant, and yet look at what you get: much nicer miniatures, different military units, less luck, more strategic possibilities, and a better combat system. And a cheaper game! Attack! is currently selling at many online retailers for only $20, why would anyone in their right mind spend more money on Risk when it's clearly inferior? Clearly, the only reason that someone is at this very moment buying a copy of Risk at Walmart, is because they don't know about Attack!
