If you're anywhere near my age, you recall the days of Swatch watches, slap bracelets, peg-rolled jeans, and Saturday morning cartoons.

Of course, I can remember the games I was introduced to at the time. Those particular games that stuck with me over the years well into my gaming adulthood.

So, I put it to you BGG. Care to reminisce with me?

The games in question don't even need to have been originally published in the eighties, just so long as they were available during that time and you remember them.

Let me drop a few to get us started...

This one is for Ronaldo.

Don't know if you've ever come across this little gem, but since you mentioned you had some love for DK, feast upon this piece of eighties goodness.

I owned the Milton Bradley version of Scotland Yard in the mid-80s that had the tombstone shaped detective pieces.

I loved this game then, and this is one of the few 80s kids games that I still enjoy today.

Unfortunately I don't still have my original MB set (for nostalgic purposes only), but the Ravensburger set I own is much nicer anyway.

I loved Lost Treasure. That Merlin-like consol was the coolest electronic game part I owned (after the Dark Tower of course). I remember playing with family and friends, and when there was no one around to play with I would play it solo.

I doubt if the game play would hold up today (unlike Scotland Yard above), but the components were top notch. I still think the board is fantastic. The nautical chart look really draws you into feeling like you are a SCUBA diving treasure hunter.

Since so many have commented on this game, I decided to add it here (even though for me it's a 70's game rather than 80's). After I rediscovered boardgaming a couple of years ago, I picked up a decent copy on ebay. The magnetic storm still works! Nice board design, too, for an older game. While the game is a little random, the real thrill, as others pointed out, is waiting for that "click" which signifies your ship's doom...

THE game. The one that started it all for me. What boardgamer in my generation has NOT played this classic?

Given the choice by my friends to play either Conquest of the Empire or A&A one day, I picked this one and never looked back (I still haven't ever played COTE...). Long hours of enjoyment, followed by similar experiences with Fortress America and Shogun/Ikusa.

Settlers of Catan does not improve with your house rules. The best option if you don't like the rules as written is to just select another game.
mb
First, if you believe the original Car Wars came in a Pocket Box, you are not a true eighties gamer - it first came in a zip-loc bag.

Second, if you didn't spend three times as much time designing your own vehicles as you did playing the game, you aren't a true Car Wars player.

Third, if you believe Steve Jackson Games has updated this game since 1981 or took advantage of the change in technology since then to make design any easier, I have a bridge to sell you.

Still a great game though.

Published in 1977, this is a game that I thoroughly enjoyed playing in the 1980s but that I would probably never consider playing now. Boardgames have come a long way in 30+ years, but in its time, Rail Baron was a good, if overly long, game

Although published in 1979, I have many fond memories of this game from the 1980's.

My friends and I would laugh our way through the entire game, not really caring who won; besides, the whole point was to lose all your money anyway!

Avalon Hill's printing brought this game to the hobby masses, and created the cult following it still holds onto today.

I remember many wasted Friday nights playing this at the campus game club when I was in college.

Another of Steve Jackson's pocketbox gems. This, and the follow-up G.E.V., were lightweight wargames that were simply fun to play.

This aforementioned game was one of several MB combat games in my closet, years before I discovered proper wargaming.

Looking back, I was ready for wargaming when I was 9, since I picked up on the mechanics of this game fairly easily back then. It's a shame I was 13 when I finally got my first Avalon Hill game.

Unlike Magic Realm, I was actually old enough to understand the rules when I bought this giant box of game pieces. I played it a couple times, but my opponents were disinterested tweenagers and I spent most of my time imagining battles on my own. This was my first introduction into tabletop wargaming, maybe if it had been a better game I would have joined the grognard camp.
