I do.

Almost like a manical salesman, I constantly inquire folks I meet if they play boardgames and am dissappointed by how many do not share my intrest.

Like a gentle shrink, I coax situations to include a boardgame session.

And like a crusader, I'll give games I've bought away to people who I feel I have converted into boardgamers, who were kind enough to play, and to anyone as a gift.

If you have given a game away, feel free to share which game, to who and why.

Epilogue: A special thanks to all "BGG give-awayers". Also, its intersting to note how giving games can help heal folks and bind them together.

For Christmas last year, I gave a copy of this to the host of the monthly game days I attend. There was a selfish reason behind it, though. I wanted to free up space in my game crate to bring other stuff.

I bought it and let it sit on my shelf untouched for a few months. My friend who had all the other Descent expansions except this one couldn't find it in the stores. He also helped me do some work on my house so I thought it would be a good idea to give him the game for helping me. We are still waiting to try it out.

Last year in our travels around the country, my wife and I introduced Pandemic to several friends and family members. Almost without exception, everyone really got into the game and eagerly asked to play again. I ended up buying several very slightly damaged copies of the game at Boards & Bits while at the warehouse to pick up some other things I'd ordered, and we sent a few of those copies out to some people who had been particularly generous in letting us park our motorhome in their driveway overnight and doing laundry at their house and feeding us and stuff like that. I get reports back every so often that they're still playing and enjoying the game.

I suppose that's not entirely "giving them away", as we had been shown some generosity on their part which the games were repaying, in a sense. But anyway...

Earlier this summer I gave my buddy and his son an older copy of the boxed set that came with the cardboard mechs instead of the cool plastic minis... but only after I bought a copy of the new Total Warfare version with the cool plastic minis, as well as all the new Total Warefare rulebooks available at the time! So... I also decided to give them my copies of the Battletech "Master Rules Revised" and "MaxTech Revised" to go with it.

This is my next step towards getting them interested in wargaming, after giving them Attack! last year. While it's not the latest CBT game and ruleset, it worked quite well for twenty years and the core game is still the same great game it always was!

I gave this one away last week. A BGG user approached me about a trade for some formula de tracks. After negotiating the trade, I noticed that the other user had Space Alert on his want list. So, I offered to include this in the trade with no strings. My copy had been damaged when my son spilled a drink on one of the red player mats and it warped. I retaped it, but knowing that an imperfection like this would make it more difficult to trade, and that the game flopped with my group, it was simpler to send it to a home that can show it some love.

I decided in 2006 to give my family a board game for Christmas, every year. I didn't like where Christmas presents were going, always getting fancier and fancier and I tried to go to the roots of Christmas (a true family holiday where we can play games and have fun together).

First Christmas (2006): I chose to give them Blokus. It didn't go well with them. They played it but never quite got the hang of it. It was too abstract and intellectually demanding for them (no I'm not saying my family is stupid, just that they don't like those games... my dad does but he's not a big gamer).

Second Christmas (2007): I chose to give them an Icelandic game Draumaeyjan. It got half a play. My sister and I sat down to play it and halfway through she left to meet her friends. Icelandic games are probably not the most well designed. For me they are basically Monopoly with a different theme. That's why I was a bit surprised when my mom said: "Awww you opened it? I was going to exchange it for Monopoly".

Third Christmas (2008): I had spent a lot of time here on the geek and had become better in picking games for the right audience. My family doesn't like intellectually demanding games and they like extremely simple mechanics. I therefore chose to give them Ticket to Ride. It was a huge success. My mom became addicted to TtR online and you can always ask them to play a game of TtR. I now know kind of what games I should give them and I have decided the game for this Christmas.

** I would however like to give them games like the two first Christmases since when they don't like the games they somehow end up in my closet so I benefit. However that's kinda selfish and not really what Christmas is all about.

Burning Empires is a game I've given away recently. Great game, one of my all time favourites, but sososo not a pick-up-and-play proposition. Folks really need to have read some of the rules and be onboard with the spirit of the game. Trying to have a compelling one shot session of Burning Empires is darned hard work.

So I gave the game away to a friend who was a likely candidate to a) read this very beautiful-looking book, and b) subsequently play this awesome space-opera horror-fest of a game with me. Sadly, said friend is in the Navy and has been posted away since then, but we'll play Burning Empires together someday.

Btw, I wholeheartedly applaud and endorse the spirit of this GeekList! I've given many RPGs away over the years, not so much because I don't want them but because I want folks to read them, be enthused by them, and spread the gaming goodness.

My wife will be returning home to Cambodia for a month soon to show off our 1 year old baby. She will be taking a copy of Carcassonne with her. After making fun of my playing games with our 2 other children (9 & 11 years old) she finally played a game and has asked for it to be played again repeatedly. I was thinking of buying a copy of Lost Cities which I have played online and Hive which I haven't played yet as well for her to take. If they prove popular she will leave them there for her family or friends to enjoy.

I remember bringing a copy of Settlers there 5 or more years ago. After about 5 minutes of play everyone fled in terror. Hopefully this time she will have more luck than I did.

Carcassonne was my second gateway game, after the Settlers of Catan. The only person that would play it with me was my mom, and she loved it. The problem was, I wasn't really that into the game, so years later I ended up trading it in a math trade about a week before my parents were coming to visit. Right after I had sent it away, she asked me to bring it to my sister's where they would be staying so we could play. I didn't have the heart to tell her I had gotten rid of it, so I bought a new copy, punched it, and brought it to my sister's where I gave it to her to keep.

Gave this
- to my mother on christmas
- to my brother 2 weeks ago.

Great family success. Its one of the few family games my mother enjoys (and which are not yahtzee). And my brothers son likes it too. He wrote today. He played with grandma and she won by 174 to 173 points. Oh he is 11..

They have several other games going on, together with the boys mother for example. A carcassonne is a gift that keeps on giving.

For a while I ran a part time business buying and selling CCG's. I used to regularly attend Comic and card shows all over the UK. There was one family that used to come and see me at most of the London shows. They had a daughter who was about 8 or 9. I used to have a large box of common cards that were 5p each and uncommon cards that were 50p each. She used to love to look through them and would buy maybe 8 or 10 cards a show, I usually gave her a few extra ones as well.

I decided to give up the business and told her family at a show that the next one would be my last. To my surprise at the next show she bought me a card wishing me luck and saying she would miss me. I told them to come and see me at the end of the show. When they came I gave her all the commons and uncommons I had left plus a few decks and boosters from some of the other games I was selling.

I have more games than I can comfortably store or have the opportunity to play, so I generally try to unload the stinkers.
Selling or trading them is more hassle than I want to deal with so I tend to just give them away.

Arkham Horror was probably the most extreme case; I gave that away on two conditions: one, the person I gave it to must never ask me to play it, and two, he doesn't try to give it back.

Other games are okay, but I know I'll never suggest playing them because I have something better (Blue Moon) or they're just not my style (Traders of Osaka.)

Occasionally, games are bad enough that I'll throw them out rather than inflict them on someone else. Grave Robbers From Outer Space, I'm looking at you.

The games I can think of that I've given away (for no occasion) were Cosmic Encounter & Orcz.

I gave Orcz away to a friend of mine simply because he got more enjoyment from it than I did. Simple, boring reason.

The reason I gave CE away is a bit more complex. I saw it at my FLGS, used of course, for $8. I couldn't not buy it...even though I already had a copy of this ed. After taking it home & looking at it, my buyer's remorse kicked in. I also went through the components and realized it was missing a couple of counters and a few cards. I looked at the "users wanting" list and geekmailed them. I got a response, emailed Mayfair to see if I could buy blank cards (I couldn't, but they found one and sent it to me for free. Thanks Mayfair!), put some blanks in the box & sent it to a geek I have never met

Payment? I gave it away...remember? I did make two requests though. First, if he ends up at GenCon, meet up and play a game or something. Second, if he can do the same for someone else, do it.

Giving games away is a standard practice for our family. As I have many friends, family, and folks that I deal with on a regular basis that do not play designer games I am, like many, looking for folks to sit and play with. Especially being a Minister we are constantly having folks stay with us or different social functions and I like activities that promote social interaction. Hence my joy with this hobby.

Many converts lie under the belt.

One of the things that I do is teach a couple a two player game. Many times we play a four player game but the couple will say, "This is fun but there are only two of us..." I bring out Mr. Jack. Has not failed yet. When the couple really enjoys a game, a new gaming couple, I usually will buy the game and send an appreciation card along with it just to say "Thanks."

Even throw in websites where other games can be had.

There are games that are on my shelf that just do not get played, especially word games right now. I find myself giving these games away. Builds great relationships with folks.

The foundation of this hobby in my humble opin.

Enjoy the list. Thanks!

I've given away two copies of Lost Cities, one to a friend and one to a cousin. With my friend, we had spent an afternoon playing the game together in a cafe. She really enjoyed the game, so we played repeatedly. With my cousin, I taught her and later her husband, and they played a few games in succession. In both cases, they were females who enjoyed playing board games and wanted to share the experience with their husbands. Lost Cities is relatively inexpensive and always available, so I knew it would be easy to reacquire, and I knew it was easy enough to be likely to see actual play by the couples.

My friend later went on to ask about other relatively light games to acquire, and she played more games during some of my later visits with an eye to scoping out likely purchases. My cousin had less success getting her husband into more games (they just had a child) but did manage to play Lost Cities with him from time to time.

All in all, I think everyone got a good amount of enjoyment out of the game, and it was such an easy thing to give away. It's a quick game that's portable and that doesn't look too expensive, so people are more willing to accept it graciously. It's not a bad start, I think.

Got this one cheap from a local seller, and decided it would make a perfect Christmas present for the brother in-law & his family. They're familiar with Carcassonne, and will even appreciate the somewhat (but not really) religious aspect to the game.

Of this one I gave quite some away:

- a friend
- a colleague
- my brother for his children
- another colleague.

Its always a blast and when You show it to somebody they ask for it. Show it - lose it.
