Elkhart, Indiana game night report 08-15-09

Only had 3 players this week, as curiously the two Seans were absent. The group was: Russ (LordBullingdon), Josh (numskully), and Chris (teeaniknik)
Josh walked away with the combined victory winning 4 of the 6 games played.
Ok, lets get it on.

The first choice of the night, Chris brought this out. I had been wanting to try this because I'm all for games with dice, and getting to roll dice and build a civilization at the same time just sounded like pure fun.
The first game came to a victorious conclusion for Chris since he managed to build a large monument, and Josh had like 15 disasters or something so he kind of had an embarrassing first try as he chose to starve his people the whole game. I had a pretty bad game too, because I had zero disasters but only ended up scoring 3 more points overall than Josh. Oh well, it was my first game, we chose to play again.
The second game had a bit more action. I think all the players were dragging out the game a bit more this time by not purchasing every development they could get right away. This gave more time for players to build monuments so the final scoring was higher for everyone at the end. Josh finished the Pyramid and bought the Empire development for big points, he was the winner of game 2.

We moved on to another first try game for me, but this time I was at a severe disadvantage as the other 2 guys had ample experience with this game.
My first spaceship was a complete disaster, as my opponents managed to pick apart at least half of it before we even started the round. Seriously, I had one battery powered engine, two cannons, 2 cabins and one cargo bay. 6 or 7 tiles for my starting ship, it was a wreck from the get go. I luckily didn't have to give up somehow and still made it safely to the end of the round, but didn't make any money.
Round two was funny. I made a slightly better ship, but realized that I had 4 battery powered engines and only 1 single engine. I had 6 total batteries, so I could fire up all my thrusters 1 time. The other guys ships were built like tanks and every space on the sheet was used. They were really gaining a sizable lead on me in space bucks at this point.
Round 3 I actually built a decent ship and finally had an income but it just wasn't enough, so I came in last place. I'd like to play again, but I'm kind of torn on the real-time component grabbing phase. It gives me stress. I would definitely play again though.

Another selection from Chris' tub o' games he brought over. This game actually took longer to explain than Galaxy Trucker, I thought it was a bit confusing at first, but after the first round it was pretty self explanatory.
I actually started out very good, building a few small islands, and getting my nobles built up quickly for fast scoring. At the 4th round and there after I was hamstrung by a lack of starting islands, so I was buying Vikings and having to throw away the tiles because I just didn't have anywhere to place them. The other players never faced this dilemma and were both able to eventually pass me by overcoming my lead in islands.
Josh had some huge scoring at the end because he had 6 marauding ships in his tableau, and managed to ferry over just enough warriors at the very end to block them all for big victory points and dollars. Chris had a very steady game, with consistent scoring, but Josh simply came on way too strong on the final round, winning every category of final scoring. My game pretty much petered out during the 4th round. I had a good lead at that point, but I realize now that I shouldn't have boxed myself in. I want to play again.
Score: Josh 66 Chris 56 Russ 42

This is a recent acquisition for me, but I wasn't sure if we should play it with only 3 players, considering the amount of negotiation in the game. But, we played it anyway.
I love the components and the theme right off. And, it has loads of dice. I think that the game really showed how it can lack in gameplay when you don't have alot of players because the Men of Action cards are limited. If you have more players, there are more MoA cards to choose from, and there will be more fighting over the speakeasies etc...
We managed to open 3 speakeasies between the three of us, so that was another problem, because each player had controlling influence in 1 of the bars, so we simply lined our trucks up to 'Our' bars each turn and gained profit.
The dice rolling was a problem for Josh because he thinks it screws up the whiskey production phase too much, and it also affects the whiskey buying phase due to the randomness of D6's. I tend to think this is a problem that would be remedied by a 5 or 6 player game, due to the fact that more still improvements, and speakeasy improvements would show up.
I liked the game overall, and wasn't bothered by the randomness of dice rolling. I hope to talk these guys into giving it one more try if we can get at least 5 players minimum.
Scoring: Josh $100 Gs Chris $84 Gs Russ $62 Gs

Final game of the night. I don't remember the score but Chris won, and I came in 2nd. Josh lost. He didn't lose much this night.
The game has a tedious set-up, bordering on ridiculous for a card game. It was pretty fun though. I didn't get any of the special cards though, so I didn't have much opportunity to mess with other people really. Would play again.
