Word Game Suggestions Solicited

I was intrigued by the game WordSense and wondered what people's opinions of it might be and also what other great classics I may be missing. I love wordgames (although my true vocation is abstracts; I consider go to lie at the pinnacle of games) however for purposes of this list I am trying to find candidate games my wife would enjoy. All comments welcome.

One of my wife's favorites and a good game to play on car trips. My daughter has also become addicted.

The classic. We actually don't play this all that often. To be honest I find trying to come up with words from the limited subset of letters available at one time somewhat constraining (I am only speaking for myself here).

This game is on my current wish list (probably as a present) and inspired this list. It occured to me that slogging through all the "word" related games in the database would be pretty onerous, and so I thought I'd open the floor for comments and suggestions.

Perquackey is my favorite word game. Played by the rules there is down time while someone takes their turn, but we usually can't keep quiet when someone gets stuck or we see a particularly good word. This is harder than Boggle, which I also like, and not as boring as Scrabble.

Word Thief is a fun word game with a bit of nasty thrown in as you steal words from other players.

Try this one ... sort of a 'make up your own crossword' using letters selected communally (as in everyone take a "q") and only score for real words.

Another game by the makers of Word Thief. Not quite as good as Word Thief, but still a very good word game. It brings an element of gambling and "pushing your luck" to a word game.

This is the game my wife, mother-in-law and I play pretty regular. Very fun. Emphasis on a vocabulary of short words, but a dash of skill (finding creative ways to build up a word) will see you victorious.

A very good word game that makes you looks for words like in a word search. It really makes you think and it is amazing some of the words you can find by moving letter tiles in the right position. Shouldn't be hard to find on Ebay.

A very relaxing and engaging word game that plays like solitaire, but scales from 1 to 4 players well. Another game that shouldn't be hard to find on Ebay.

A nice game by the same company that makes 5 Crowns and which is similar to 5 Crowns. As a bonus, the art on the cards is beautiful!

Palabra - THE PERFECT WORD GAME (kinda). My Wife is an avid Scrabble player but "I'm not a strong speller." This game combines Scrabble (or more acurately LETRAS), Rummy and Poker. Check it out! (Plus it's only about $16)

I enjoy Up For Grabs quite a bit -- you need to be quick with making words from the tiles as they appear. Actually quite a bit like My Word from Out of the Box, but using tiles instead of cards. However, you can also steal opponents' words by using the letters from their words to create wholly new words.

In our gaming convention (Mucca Games), we play our "Word Whiz tournament version": we removed the "Jungle Speed" feeling with some modifications to the rules.
- All players have to find in the same time (in 15'') a word in compliance with the rules (i.e. containing the 3 consonants) - All players score points with the vowels included in their word - After 10 rounds, E&T winning conditions are applied: the player's score corresponds to his lowest vowel score.
The image I choose is from Mucca Games: you can see 2 gaming authors playing Word Whiz, Andrea "Wings of War" Angiolino (grey shirt) and Silvano "Dancing Dice" Sorrentino (blue shirt).

This original wordgame is an instant hit with anyone I've played it with. I'm not quite sure about availability in the US (the design is Dutch, but the nature of the game allows the same set of lettercards to be playable in English, French and German too; rules are in all four languages), but if you can find it, get it. This game deserves widespread recognition.

I have always been a big fan of Scrabble but my wife and friends sometimes finds it takes a little too long when one of us fall into AP to create the perfect word that scores on the triple word score. Upwords and Boggle are two other word games I own, but don't really get any table time and the reason is...
Syzygy! I have played this with all age groups (15 - 80) and it has gone over very well. It is a fast paced game where you concentrate on building your own crossword-like puzzle while your opponents do the same. When someone depletes their tiles, they would say "draw" and everyone takes three new tiles to add to their puzzle. Once all of the tiles are used and someone has included all of their tiles into their puzzle the game is over. Everyone reviews the words to ensure spelling and points are scored, though in recent games it has been more about the fun and as long as the person who finished first spelled everything correctly we claim the game over.
So, if you enjoy a fast paced open-ended games, this might be for you.

I've always been a fan of Foil from the classic 3M game line. First you have to create words with your hand of letter cards, then scramble them and try to unscramble the other players'. Word length requirements get bigger in subsiquent hands.
There's no shortage of copies available on ebay or BGG Marketplace, and can be had cheap. Comes in the classic bookshelf format, or the smaller gamette size. I prefer the bookshelf version. It comes with card holders that make the larger hands easier to manage.

I haven't had a chance to play this one, but it looks like fun. You have to fight for the letters you want, and struggle to slide them through the tracks to get them out. All while the others are doing the same.

I have this one for trade. It allows you to fill in a crossword style board, but you don't have to intersect word, but you do get more points if they intersect. It's combined with a very simple trivia format that could be very interesting.

this game has led to the biggest laugh we ever had gaming. In this game you build a word and everyone else has to guess it (like hangman or wheel of fortune). My youngest son was in 1st grade and his word was _ _ _ _ _.
After a few guesses he now had P _ N _ S
We were stumped, so we started guessing vowels. Pretty soon his board displayed P E N _ S
hmmmm. I finally guessed the letter I. He said, "You guessed my word!" I asked if he would like to read it to me & my wife.
"Sure. It says 'pennies'" We still embarrass him with that story.
