I was intrigued by the game WordSense and wondered what people's opinions of it might be and also what other great classics I may be missing. I love wordgames (although my true vocation is abstracts; I consider go to lie at the pinnacle of games) however for purposes of this list I am trying to find candidate games my wife would enjoy. All comments welcome.

Interesting... This appears to be a deduction game much like Mastermind or Zendo with letters using a pad & pencil as its only components... and we have a 5 hour car trip coming up next month.

Thanks Lyman

Jotto (we'd always spelled it "Giotto") is a fantastic game. My friends and I would play it on long subway rides. Needless to say the game was much more difficult on our way home from the bar...

The classic. We actually don't play this all that often. To be honest I find trying to come up with words from the limited subset of letters available at one time somewhat constraining (I am only speaking for myself here).

This game is on my current wish list (probably as a present) and inspired this list. It occured to me that slogging through all the "word" related games in the database would be pretty onerous, and so I thought I'd open the floor for comments and suggestions.

I highly recommend this one...my family is also addicted to Jotto and it is usually one of the first games my teen-age daughter wants to play when I suggest a game. The other word game she loves is WordSense. It is cheap & fun; and a great contrast to Jotto (a quiet game) because WordSense is fast, furious, and can get raucus - never nasty, though.

The compactness of this game is really sweet, and I must also recommend the Travel edition of Play-on-Wordz for that reason.

Perquackey is my favorite word game. Played by the rules there is down time while someone takes their turn, but we usually can't keep quiet when someone gets stuck or we see a particularly good word. This is harder than Boggle, which I also like, and not as boring as Scrabble.

This game really shines with a one minute timer. Without it, it's rather pedestrian. With it, it's a brutal push your luck game. If you don't push your luck, the next player will probably outscore you. Good mix of risk, word skill and lots of fun. And like all good word games, tense as hell with a one minue timer.

I really enjoy Bali. There's the potential for a screwage factor that doesn't exist in a lot of word games. You have to think about combinations of letters that can be used in words. As you're working toward a certain good word, someone can come along and take your letters. It plays well as solitaire. I think that's a plus.

Just played this for the first time. I love it. If you like word games you will love this. It's a fairly quick game (at least with two players). We played with the main rules (my wife and I). Knowing when to buy letters is key. The round before, I sold a word for 196 and the next round I drew a lot of five letters that would have cost me 169. I passed as the mix of letters wouldn't have scored me enough cash and I would have wasted my big word from the previous turn. My plan is to make sure I have a Scrabble dictionary to go with it, for challenges. If you are really good, you can form up to 14 letter words. I plan on playing this game alot.

I enjoy Up For Grabs quite a bit -- you need to be quick with making words from the tiles as they appear. Actually quite a bit like My Word from Out of the Box, but using tiles instead of cards. However, you can also steal opponents' words by using the letters from their words to create wholly new words.

In our gaming convention (Mucca Games), we play our "Word Whiz tournament version": we removed the "Jungle Speed" feeling with some modifications to the rules.

- All players have to find in the same time (in 15'') a word in compliance with the rules (i.e. containing the 3 consonants)
- All players score points with the vowels included in their word
- After 10 rounds, E&T winning conditions are applied: the player's score corresponds to his lowest vowel score.

The image I choose is from Mucca Games: you can see 2 gaming authors playing Word Whiz, Andrea "Wings of War" Angiolino (grey shirt) and Silvano "Dancing Dice" Sorrentino (blue shirt).

This original wordgame is an instant hit with anyone I've played it with. I'm not quite sure about availability in the US (the design is Dutch, but the nature of the game allows the same set of lettercards to be playable in English, French and German too; rules are in all four languages), but if you can find it, get it. This game deserves widespread recognition.

I have always been a big fan of Scrabble but my wife and friends sometimes finds it takes a little too long when one of us fall into AP to create the perfect word that scores on the triple word score. Upwords and Boggle are two other word games I own, but don't really get any table time and the reason is...

Syzygy! I have played this with all age groups (15 - 80) and it has gone over very well. It is a fast paced game where you concentrate on building your own crossword-like puzzle while your opponents do the same. When someone depletes their tiles, they would say "draw" and everyone takes three new tiles to add to their puzzle. Once all of the tiles are used and someone has included all of their tiles into their puzzle the game is over. Everyone reviews the words to ensure spelling and points are scored, though in recent games it has been more about the fun and as long as the person who finished first spelled everything correctly we claim the game over.

So, if you enjoy a fast paced open-ended games, this might be for you.

I've always been a fan of Foil from the classic 3M game line. First you have to create words with your hand of letter cards, then scramble them and try to unscramble the other players'. Word length requirements get bigger in subsiquent hands.

There's no shortage of copies available on ebay or BGG Marketplace, and can be had cheap. Comes in the classic bookshelf format, or the smaller gamette size. I prefer the bookshelf version. It comes with card holders that make the larger hands easier to manage.

this game has led to the biggest laugh we ever had gaming. In this game you build a word and everyone else has to guess it (like hangman or wheel of fortune). My youngest son was in 1st grade and his word was _ _ _ _ _.

After a few guesses he now had P _ N _ S

We were stumped, so we started guessing vowels. Pretty soon his board displayed P E N _ S

hmmmm. I finally guessed the letter I. He said, "You guessed my word!" I asked if he would like to read it to me & my wife.

"Sure. It says 'pennies'" We still embarrass him with that story.
