Well, fellow Geeks, it's that time of year again, where we start eagerly anticipating the end of November and the arrival of BGG Con 2009. For us wargamers, we usually like to do a little planning before hand because our games take so long.

Like last year, this geeklist can be used to suggest wargames you'd like to play, find players, and set up meet-ups.

Please either subscribe to this list or put it on your Quickbar. It is not currently stickied or linked to the main BGG page (since it has to exist first). As soon as this list goes up, I will geekmail Aldie and Derk and ask them to sticky the list and put a link on the BGG Con main page. Until then, it will rapidly fall off the main geeklist page.

For Geeks who used the wargamer meet-up list last year, go ahead and get started. For those of you who are wargamers and will be attending BGG Con for the first time, please keep reading.

If this is your first time coming to BGG Con and you're a wargamer, this list will be invaluable to you to find someone to play games with. BGG Con is open gaming. For most boardgamers, games run from 30 minutes to 2 hours. Of course, for us wargamers, that's almost never the case, and the rules are generally dense enough that learning at the Con can be a pain. This geeklist will let all us wargamers get our ducks in a row before the con so that we can cram as many games as possible into the experience instead of reading rules and looking for four random players who just happen to know how to play, for example, The Napoleonic Wars.

Underneath a game's item, leave a comment of your interest in playing that game. When enough players are listed, start finding out who's going to be in town when, what days work, and where you'd like to meet. Make sure that you discuss who, if anyone, is going to bring a copy of the game. While Aldie's library is HUGE, there's usually only one copy of each game, and there are many, many more obscure wargames that aren't in his library at all.

If a game you want to play is not listed (look alphabetically), just add it.

Last year, lots of wargamers congregated in the Oak Ballroom toward the west wall. One of the days, we even had a big "Don't Tread On Me" flag. Here's a map of the convention space: Hotel Banquet Facilities.

I've listed a few games I'm interested in just to get us started . . .

I tried this game a couple days ago, and it is really awesome. It's my feeling that the campaign game would only be playable in 6 hours IF both players were well-versed in the rules. After playing the Trafalgar game a couple times, I am thinking that the scenario is pretty lop-sided in favor of the Allied player, but the purpose of it is to teach the basic mechanics of the game, not necessarily to be balanced. Er, perhaps I should simply say that to play the British player requires a bit more skill and gamesmanship--and quite a bit of luck. If you have the initiative, you may want to screen French fleets and you might spend more time counting hexes than the French need to. All of which is to say that if both players are new to the game, I think the Allies have an easier time of it in the Trafalgar scenario.

I think the best play for the con would be to play a specific number of turns of the Grand Campaign, or to play until a specific time.

I am purchasing a copy of this game (we played on a friend's copy), and will not be able to bring it to the Con and will be bringing my copy provided it arrives before I leave. BUT, I would be more than willing to teach and/or play if someone else had a copy.

I am available Friday evening after Here I Stand--hopefully free to play around 3:00 PM or 4:00 PM, if there are any takers. If I receive my copy prior to the Con, I will bring it.

I will gladly teach, or play, or whatever. This is a nice, sleek design that really does tell an alternative narrative of this most-interesting of years in naval history.

This may be a bit too heavy for BGG but if someone is really interested I would love to play. It a steep slope to get into but I like the system.

I am thinking Scennario #6: To Rostov. It plays on map R.

To play you would need a rule book(GMT website), and ideally a play book.

I have no idea how long it would take but I would guess around six hours. The first turn would probably take 90 minutes for newbies.

Thursday, November 19, 2009 @ 10:30 to 11:00 AM Start Time(after registration), Oak Ball Room

All Players Welcome, But Please Post If You Know You Want to Play

Currently, there are 4 other players besides myself that are interested. I will only be bringing this game if I get some confirmations from players prior to the Con--otherwise I will save the valuable luggage space.

I will be able to play from just after registration up until about 3:00 PM. I will gladly leave my minis and intro set for any players to continue the game, if they want. The scenario will probably be something with hidden and/or overt objectives with between 4-6 mechs on a side. Possibly a merc v. merc combat, depending.

Complexity: Medium
Players: Variable, Minimum 2
Time: Variable, Minimum 2-3+ hours (more 'Mechs, more time)

Heh. No bites on BattleTech? No desire relive those highschool/college years of LRM-20s and AC-10s? :)

I have the introductory box set, and I'm willing to bring it.

Coming back to it after over a decade, though, I did find the system somewhat cumbersome, but it all came back quickly.

I'd be up for a lance-on-lance, which would accommodate 2-8 players. Hell, we could make it a free-for-all.

So, we've got three or four. That might be the perfect number for a quick game, each of us take a 'Mech and start smashing at each other. I know there will be some rules-look-ups, and I just don't want to drag the game on and on during the first day of the con with so much other stuff people will want to do.

I expect the game to be a rather "quick" one. If we have more time, maybe do a lance v. lance. I have another game set for 3:00, and I have to squeeze in lunch...

If worse comes to worst, I can leave my game and minis with whoever wants to play. I will make sure to have have two copies of each mech's sheet and some pencils.

See you guys at 10:00-ish on Thursday morn (after registration).

Cheers.

I'm trying to get together all the stuff I need for the Con and compile a list.

I am going to bring my Intro Box Set, some painted minis, and my rules. I will also bring two copies of each mech listed in the intro set.

Just so I don't end up setting this up for nothing, do I have some confirmations for this game?

We've got interest expressed by me, as well as:

Junius Stone (tstone)
skippen (cscottk)
Quinn Munnerlyn (Lothartvni)
Sean McGrath (daehtloeht)

Per Lothartvni's request, I will try to drum up an interesting scenario with some possible hidden objectives.

As soon as I get done registering, I will head over to the OAK BALLROOM and commence set up. Registration starts at 10:00 . . . so let's plan on getting started at 11:00 to make things easier for everyone.

Depending on who shows up, I will either play and/or just be ref/rules guy.

I have to leave at the latest by 3:00, but I will leave everything so that everyone can keep playing if the game is still going, even if I have to leave for another game.

Currently, I am thinking something along the lines of Lance v. Lance (possibly a hodge-podge of 4-6 mechs per side) with a little narrative and history leading up to the battle.

If you are a DEFINITE, please let me know. If no one confirms prior to the Con, I will NOT be wasting luggage space to bring this game. :)

Cheers.

Hope to see you all there.

Please Post Here If You Want to Play--An Appropriate Scenario Must Be Selected and Ships Must Be Prepped Prior to the Con

PRIMER: Any person wanting a crash-course primer to the game, arrive half an hour early for a quick overview of movement, sail setting, gunnery, and other mechanics

Definites

Chris Montgomery (cmontgo2) (Me)
Skippen (cscottk)
Ben Vincent (SabreRedLeg)
Andy Linman (Varus)
Junius Stone (tstone)
Sean McGrath (daehtoloeht)
Dr. Glaze

MAYBES

Rusty Ballinger (kuhrusty)
Brad Andrews (andrews777)
Sean Brown (King Mob)
Joe Belanger (joebelanger)

Please let me know if/when a maybe becomes a definite, otherwise, you will be considered as an alternate. I will be doing the prep for this one. Though I will likely be relying on SabreRedLeg for rules questions.

In any case, the right scenario with the right number of ships is a must.

Game Information

The sine qua non for boardgaming at the single ship level in the Age of Sail. We played a scenario on the last day of the Con last year. Kuhrusty was crazy.

Complexity: Medium
Players: 2-20 (scenario dependent)
Time: 2-10 hours (scenario dependent)

Wouldn't that be Kuhrazy? Though that means he might not know Karate, if James Brown is any indication.

You can play, Brad. It's not too hard and the rules are pretty intuitive. Even if you make mistakes it's not (usually) fatal. And even very experienced players often make mistakes. Just let me know if you're playing, and let me know soon, because I want to close out this list in the next few days so that I can prep the ships and minis well-ahead of the con.

So, are you in?

Because I only have a week or so to get ready for the Con (I'm flying out early to visit with friends prior), I am going to close out this list in very near future. Right now, we have seven (7) interested players, which includes myself.

We will be running Scenario 20: Remember Nelson! The Battle of Lissa from the Basic Game Scenario Book. This scenario involves four (4) British and seven (7) Franco-Italian ships. Per the scenario, the ideal number of players is 8, which will accommodate everyone who wants to play, plus a couple more players. If we have enough interest, I will help to ref the game (with SabreRedLegs rules help, of course!) and we might have one player per ship, possibly.

This battle takes place long after Trafalgar, on March 13, 1811. After the catastrophe (from Napoleon's perspective) of Trafalgar, Napoleon in 1806 funded a naval build up nearly everywhere he had a port. By 1811, in Venice, he had built several frigates and corvettes with which to try and wrest control of the Adriatic Sea from the British. Britain detailed a sqaudron of a couple frigates and a few smaller craft to counter this new threat.

This battle was one of the few battles where the Allied navy had nearly all the advantages: the wind gage, a superior force numerically, and they had the British trapped against a shoreline limiting maneuverability. This battle was also unique in that none of the ships involved were ships of the line, the largest vessels being French 40-gun frigates.

We will play from 10:00 AM until I have to leave (probably sometime around 2:00 or 3:00). If, for some reason, we have fewer players than necessary, I will have to modify the scenario on the fly.

The British have superior crew quality and speed. The French have numerical superiority. There are also special rules prohibiting sailing off the map edges (which will be the equivalent of running aground).

Finally, I will try to get my minis painted prior to leaving, but there is no guarantee--if not, I may ask Sabre Red Leg to bring his, or we will use counters.

If you have a preference for which side to play, please post! :)

Cheers.

Not much can be done . . . having a passing familiarity with the rules would be nice. Sabre Red Leg is the real rules guy for this game, but I have played a couple times--I usually forget the more obscure stuff.

You can skip all the intro material about setting up ship logs, since those will be done prior to game day. Just read about weather, wind, plotting, sail states, and gun fire, if you can.

For those who can't, don't sweat it. We'll figure it out. The game in action is much more intuitive than the rules might suggest.

I still have no idea when I will be getting in. If I am in early enough, I will take a spin around the lobby and possibly the banquet hall area to see if there's any spontaneous games breaking out. I love to get a game of CC in, if I could.

I am scheduled to arrive at 5:15 on Wednesday. After checking in, I am planning to check out the lobby for pick-up games, so would be happy to be the evening CC game if you don't find any takers.

Soon to be superceded by Conflict of Heroes: Storms of Steel (to be released in September, I think), this is a Euro-type wargame on WWII tactics. Very popular amongst many at BGG.

I'd be happy to play either or both CoH games at the con. Currently, I only own the original version, if we need extra copies.

I'd love to get a game of either AtB or SoS in at the con - my schedule isn't firm yet, but the weekend days are likely to be better for me (but avoid the Flea Market and Math Trade times).

If you'd be willing to put up with a Noob maybe we could get something together. I'll throw out Thu 2100 but I could play Fri/Sat instead if that's better for you. This is my first BGG.Con so at this point all the rooms are just meaningless names on a map so feel free to suggest a location or just meet in the lobby or whatever. I can probably recruit a 4th if we need it. My buddy and I are the founding members of our local Fat Guys With Beards (FGWB) club so we should all get along fine. :)

Sure thing, I'll be working the library Thu @ 21:00 but possibly a late night game or just prior to that will work. Otherwise sure, Fri?sat is fine. If you will have cellphone/e-mail access drop me a geekmail with your contact and we will figure it out. The game is pretty darn simple so I'm sure you will pick it up just fine.

A buddy of mine is arriving at 10 a.m. or so on Friday and is only staying through Saturday night, and we're going to try to meet up and make sure we get in some games together.

I'd like to schedule something in the 8-10 a.m. slot Friday morning before he gets in, but it seems like the people I've spoken to don't want to get up that early! Not that I do, but I have to keep a "regular" schedule at the con or I'll be wiped out for the flea market and the drive home.

If you're looking to fit in a short wargame (or AT game, as well) in the 1- to 2-hour range, feel free to message me. I especially like WWII or science fiction/fantasy-themed wargames. D-Day, paratrooper and commando operations are a particular interest. I'd love to play Nexus Ops or The Creature that Ate Sheboygan, or a Metagaming Microgame (or other pocket game). But I'm open to suggestions, so long as they fit in the 2-hour window.

Anybody who mostly does wargames but is looking for something non-wargamey, I'd play Race for the Galaxy, Pandemic or something like that.

EDIT: The Friday 8-10 slot is now filled (Battlelore!), but all the rest is still true--I'm open to suggestions/challenges for shorter games between the longer games I've already scheduled.
