The music world, and the city of Cincinnati, lost one of its cheerleaders yesterday: Erich Kunzel, conductor of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, passed away at the age of 74.

The symphony had scheduled a meeting yesterday to announce his naming as "founder and conductor emeritus." He died before that meeting took place.

Please feel free to add your favorite memories, recordings, etc. of this wonderful man.

(This is my first geeklist. I know some people don't like memorial geeklists, but if that's the case, please be respectful.)

p.s.--Thanks to Janelle Gelfand of the Cincinnati Enquirer, who wrote today's front page article. I used information from her article to help me compile this list.

My husband and I used to attend the ones at the Procter & Gamble Pavilion in downtown Cincinnati, with the Ohio River flowing in the background. These were free. According to a CSO violinist in today's newspaper, some of these concerts (each year they occurred at a few venues, some larger than others) would attract 30,000 listeners.

First recording with Telarc: Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture."

If you haven't heard this recording, you're missing a treat. When it was put onto CD, it had a warning: "CAUTION: DIGITAL CANNONS"! That was necessary to prevent blowing out your speakers.

The college they recorded the cannons, Baldwin-Wallace in Berea, OH, was not so fortunate: the English Dept. building had some of its windows blown several hundred feet away!

On a personal note: I'll never forget the time he conducted at Riverbend, and our then 2-year-old daughter was happily dancing to the music, when all of a sudden that first cannon blast KA-BOOMed! She ran back to us, crying, "Mommmeee!"

The inaugural concert of Riverbend Music Center.

I have many fond memories of attending concerts at this facility, located on the banks of the Ohio River. You can't attend a concert there without hearing a passing barge or seeing a pleasure craft drift by.

One tradition (which I've never experienced) is/was an annual cruise with Kunzel to the Riverbend site, where he would conduct later that evening.

A unique moment for Cincinnati: instead of conducting the National Symphony for PBS, Kunzel broadcast "Fourth of July from the Heartland." My husband, our daughter and I were there that night. We got to see Rosemary Clooney in one of her last appearances before she passed away.

I also regret deleting this year's Capitol Fourth from my DVR. He loved celebrating the Fourth of July, and his concerts were always fun to watch.

Fall, 2010?

For years, Kunzel has had a dream of expanding Cincinnati's School for the Creative and Performing Arts. The new building is currently underway. When completed, it will educate students from kindergarten through high school in a facility located close enough to Music Hall that musicians, guest conductors, etc. will be able to interact with the students when they're in town.

Hopefully, his name will be attached to this one-of-a-kind school. He worked so hard for it.

August 1, 2009

Kunzel's last concert was held at Riverbend just last month. Though afflicted with pancreatic, liver and colon cancer, he was able to conduct the second half of the show.

I'm sorry that I didn't attend. My kids' art teacher was there, and she told me that when he came out on stage and announced, "Hey, I made it!", that there wasn't a dry eye anywhere.

I heard that one of his themes that was sung was "Sing" from Sesame Street.

A child at heart, he loved having the Sesame Street characters at the Capitol Fourth concerts. I remember how excited he was when, a couple years ago, Elmo was able to ride his tricycle on stage. (Quite a feat, when you think about it.)

"The Pops Plays Puccini" is the CD that got me to give Italian opera a try. The orchestral pieces (i.e. "opera without words") that Kunzel chose for him to conduct and for the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra to play, on this CD, are stirring and memorable. And, of course, the Telarc sound recording is excellent. This is my favorite Kunzel CD.

Kunzel and the Pops did another "opera without words" CD; this time, using Verdi's operas. But that one isn't as good as the Puccini one. (I think it's more because of Verdi's music compared to Puccini's, than it is because of Kunzel and the Pop's performance on the one CD compared to the other.)

The first Kunzel & the Cincinnati Pops CD that I ever bought was "Grofé: Grand Canyon Suite; Gershwin: Catfish Row". The Grand Canyon Suite on this CD is pretty interesting, but it's the "Catfish Row" orchestral suite from Porgy & Bess that's outstanding. I eventually ended up buying the complete Porgy & Bess opera; in fact, I ended up with two versions of that opera: one conducted by Simon Rattle, on EMI, and another by John Demain, on RCA. But it's the conducting of Eric Kunzel and the playing of the Cincinnati Pops, on Telarc, that keeps me coming back to the "Catfish Row" orchestral suite on this CD, again and again.

"Selections from VICTORY AT SEA and Other Favorites" is Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops doing dramatic (and sometimes bombastic) "naval" music from the titular documentary, and from the movies The Winds of War, The Battle of Britain, and others. It's pretty good, but this is one of the early CD's that Kunzel and the Pops did for Telarc, and the sound quality isn't quite as good as the later ones.

"Master and Commander". Of the CD's with Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops doing dramatic, naval adventure music, I prefer this CD over the other ones. Maybe it's the better sound quality of this one. But more likely, it's the better – more romantic and adventurous, and less bombastically patriotic – music itself, which includes tracks from the movies Master and Commander, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Buccaneer, The Sea Hawk, and Mutiny on the Bounty. Some really great movie music, here!

About this album, Erich Kunzel said: "Cincinnati Pops fans know that I am very fond of sailing, and they are familiar with our popular 'Victory At Sea' and 'Sailing' albums, on the Telarc label. Our latest musical adventure, 'Masters and Commanders', tells all kinds of tales of the high seas and captures on one album film composers of different generations and styles."

"Gershwin: Rhapsody in Blue; An American in Paris". More of Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops doing Gershwin. With this CD and the "Porgy & Bess Suite" CD (listed above), you have the very best of Gershwin's jazzy orchestral music, conducted/played by one of the U.S.'s finest conductors/orchestras, and with Telarc's incredible sound engineering.

My personal favorite of his is Time Warp, which was the only place you could find a theme to Battlestar Galactica (70's version) until SciFi (bah humbug on SyFy!) revived the series.

Considering the way that my roommates in college blasted that track, I'm surprised I'm not deaf. (Although my wife might dispute that assessment.)

Oh yeah....

The CD Miklos Rozsa: Three Choral Suites makes good background music for playing Ave Caesar, given that the suites are from the films Ben Hur, Quo Vadis and King of Kings.

Having the Mormon Tabernacle Choir as the backing vocals doesn't hurt, either.
