Everyone's played some of them. There's always more of them. What are they? Card Game Fillers!

Yea, that's right. The games you pull out while waiting. The games you play in the evening.

Those games that take the magic 20 minutes. The games everyone can learn no matter how tired they are.

What are the best of the best in this category? I've played a ton of them. Here are my picks. Fill in yours!

(Examples of non-fits:

RftG: I love it. It does not take 2 minutes to explain.
Dominion: Setup and Teardown throws this one right out the window. And heck, it's in a huge box with 500+ cards. No.
Uptown: I'd count it if I didn't call this "Card Fillers"
Bottle Imp/Poison: I was avoiding trick taking games.
Great wall of China/Citadels: Seems more than a filler to me.
Bohnanza: English edition takes too long for a filler with the expansions built in. But that's just me.

Edit: I was also avoiding pure 2-player games, but forgot to mention it. A few have been added that are darn fine games. (Battle Line, Ka-Ching, Lost Cities.) Add more if you like.

Still, these are my non-fits. Go ahead and add them if they work for you.

This one's definitely light and quick enough to be a filler. And all you need is a standard deck of cards (or more than one, if you have lots of players).

Oh--and hey, it's not just for kids. There's a pinch of strategy to be found in this simple game.

Players randomly draw a card from their deck and they have to name the vegetable that's on it. It can either be lettuce, tomato, cauliflower of pepper.
But, a vegetable can't be named twice in a row, so the second player to draw the same card, has to lie.
But, in case someone lied, the next player can't name the vegetable shown on the card or named by the previous player.
But, when a cockroach turns up, the vegetable on that card cannot be named at all, instead you say cockroach. Again, cockroach cannot be called twice in a row. When a second cockroach turns up, that vegetable cannot be named, while the first one is allowed again.
You can't stutter, pause of hesitate. When you make a mistake you add the played cards to the bottom of your deck. The player who runs out of his deck, wins!

It's fast. It's loud. It's fun. laugh
It's not easy at all! angry

Treasure Fleet is a great card game filler! It's kind of like a trick taking game, but not really.

Everyone has the same set of Cannon cards, including a Boarding Party card. Each round (or "sailing") there will be some ship cards laid out, those are the Spanish treasure fleet returning to Europe laden with gold. Each round goes like this:

- Deal out Treasure Fleet cards (worth various values)
- Load guns - each player chooses 3 of their cards to play this round and sets aside the rest
- Play cards (one at a time)
- Collect ships (player with the most cannons played on a ship collects it)

That's it. A Boarding Party card counts as infinite cannons. There are 4 rounds and then each player will have 1 card left over which they use to ransom off the Governor... so whoever saves the most cannons gets some extra points there.

It's a very clever game, and I've been impressed with it every time I play it.

Out of the Box Games has a variety of "fast play" games, many of them which rely upon how quickly players react.

Wheedle is my favorite. It's based on Pit, but you only have to collect a *majority* of each suit (business) in your hand. Also, you can always trade with the one face-up card in the center of the table. However! If you hold in your hand a card of the same suit (business) as that one card, the business is bankrupt! You score no points for the cards in this suit. It makes a fun, frentic, game, very playable by the non-serious and the non-gamers.

Qwitch, My Word, and Blink are other games in this series. All of them are under ten dollars, and are fun for kids, too.

If your crew already knows the basic Poker hands, this games takes about 1 minute to teach and 5 minutes to play.

Fun, very quick, handles 2 to 6 players, and features some tough choices to be made.

And, oh yeah, it's played with a standard deck of cards (no jokers).

The ideal filler.

I realize Sheamus was looking to avoid trick-taking games on this list, but Watten, despite having a trick-taking mechanism in place, is more about betting/bluffing than it is about capturing tricks. Also, the game is not as simple as some of the other games on this list, with its unusual trumps and card rankings but, for veteran card players, learning this game's eccentricities will be a breeze.

Watten is a Bavarian trick-taking game for 2-4 players that is listed as taking 30 minutes to play, but that time is highly variable - a game could be over after a single deal due to betting. Here are my comments on the 2-player game, which is all that I've played but which I think is excellent:
Quote:
Reading the rules, doesn't really tell you what it will feel like playing the game. The two player game is like a highly distilled form of head-to-head Poker. But better, since you can mold the power of your hands thru the setting of the trump rank and the trump suit, and the not needing to follow suit makes your card play highly flexible. Since you only see 10 of the 32 cards, there is lots of uncertainty, which can make the betting wonderfully excruciating. And being in the lead can sometimes feel worse than trailing, especially when your sitting at 9 points: with only 2 points left to win, your opponent can really start upping the bids hard and fast, since they've nothing to lose (either you win by a little or they risk letting you win by a lot) but you have little to gain. It hurts, but in a good way. The hands and the games can be over pretty quickly with the constant threat of bets, counter-bets, and bald-face bluffing. Watten is one of the very few truly enjoyable two player games that can be played with a standard deck of cards.
