This is the 2009 edition of the Thrift WTF Find of the Week. In contrast to that other FOTW list, this list is reserved for thrifted games that make you say, "WTF?" Also in contrast to that other list, winners of the WTFFOTW will receive a prize in geekgold from my personal stash - determined in part by how loudly I said "WTF!" when I saw the item and also by how many tips the list receives.

Criteria for selection include:
Uniqueness of the find.
Bizarreness of the find.
Offensiveness of the find.
Whatever other whacked-out reasons the judges decide to use...

If you'd like to help the winners get a bigger prize, please tip this list or the items on it.

Don't forget to subscribe to this list so you can always get the latest updates about what's happening in the world of WTF?

Update: Do to my time restrictions, which have gotten much more sever this year, I am assing the WTF FOTW responsibilities over to two fine geeks who have volunteered to manage this list. From now on, entries will be handled by Jason Monroe (belial1134) and Kevin O'Hare (Bacchus). I may still pop in occasionally as a guest judge from time to time. But other then that, I leave the World of WTF in their capable hands! Please to enjoy.

It was a close call between this and Nun Bowling but in the end I had to give the award to Guts because of the sheer number of people who commented on the item saying they didn't want it. The game also earns points for being newly added to the database and for being an economic game that comes with the clown horn. Congratulations to me and my find of GUTS.

October 5 - 11 2009

As I scrolled through the pages of thrifty treasures, I saw a couple WTF-ish finds. First up was K_I_T's find of a Monopoly dedicated to Fish-Eye Camera Lens Shots of Dogs... Why is this needed? Of course the real WTF with this find is why he bought it...
WTF Candidate 1: Monopoly: Dog Artist

Next up is another K_I_T find about nose picking... I don't think the game is terribly uncommon but it is pretty disgusting and I say WTF every time I see it. Apparently if you pull the wrong booger from the head his brain explodes. WTF?
WTF Candidate 2: Gooey Louie

Next up was Caliburn's find of a safety hazard disguised as a game. Apparently, it is quite easy to cut yourself while setting up the game. And I thought the hand cramps I got from Crossfire as a kid were painful!
WTF Candidate 3: Balyna football

I found a good WTF candidate this week as well. As mentioned in this geeklist's previous entry, I found a copy of game dedicated to the Art of the Fart. In this game, players Fart whenever they land on a square commanding them to do so. The other players rate the fart based on audible quality and odiferous strength. Players win by scoring 25 total points or by clearing the room with a fart. WTF? WTF? WTF? Anyway, I can't wait to play.
WTF Candidate 4: Fart The Game

But none of the other candidates could compare with this weeks winner, Pete Belli's find of Sperm the Game. Well, that may not be the actual name, but it is certainly the aspect of the game that stands out the most. In this sex ed game, players move sperm and eggs around a board trying to get them to meet so they can make a baby (spoiler alert - that's how its done). If there is any human function turned game that out WTF farting, it's sperm. This game just gives me the creeps and easily beats the others for the WTF FOTW.
WTF Candidate 5: Humanopoly: The Facts of Life Game

Pete has won 5 !

Attention thrifters, the WTF bar has been raised!

October 12 - 18 2009

This week's list had a couple of games with very WTF titles such as negativsteve's find of Cosmic Cow, and Great_Mazinga's find of The Ball and Chain Game.

Then there were bizarre special interest items like the Elvis trivia game (Meat's find of The Legend Lives), the British post-WWII era house building propaganda piece (Caliburn's find of Housing Drive), and some sort of Monopoly clone road building game (Meander's find of STOP Road Hazard).

If this was an award given to the game with the worst pun in the title, my find of Tower of Babble would win for sure. Players are racing to build a ziggurat by talking nonstop. I'd explain it in more detail, but who cares...

davex's find of Class Struggle is worth mentioning just because the Marxist-loving rules for that game make Glenn Beck and Keith Olberman look nonbiased.

There were two games that include a WTF IS THAT THING component. First was sharkE29's find of Electronic Pictionary Man.

Next was K_I_T's find of Dungeon of Doom.
What the hell is this thing?

But I think the final prize this week has to go to Okiedokie who found a deck of Strip Poker playing cards that is perhaps the most tactless board game object ever made. Seriously, take a look at the "art" on these cards:

That's just all kinds of WTF wrong.

So congratulations to Dwayne. He is this week's recipient of 5 shiny Geekgold for picking up the the most WTF game of the week!

October 19 - 25 2009

Perhaps the most WTF-aspect of the week for me personally was that I went an entire week without setting foot in a thrift store. Things have been very busy at work and I've been working on a consulting project at night so I just haven't had time to hit the stores. Based on the finds of my fellow SLC thrifters, I don't think I missed out on a ton. Nonetheless, this is the first week in a long time where I posted no items to the weekly thrift list - WTF?

This week presented the most difficult decision I've had so far in choosing the WTF FOTW. There were several truly bizarre games found this week with many deserving of the award.

First candidates on the list are some goofy finds by pete belli. This week he found Melvin The Looney Gooney Bird Game and a copy of Rocky Bingo, an educational game about rocks. Learning through Bingo... shake
This thing is WTF nightmare fodder!

Although you didn't win this week Pete, I am still looking forward to your review on this oddity.

Next up was soltan gris's find of No Peeking!. Apparently this game is somewhat well known on BGG as it appears in several geeklists, including the famous Creepy Pictures on the Geek list. However, its new to me and the freaky cover on the box definitely qualifies it for consideration on this list.

Moving on up from the list of good candidates to the list of great candidates, we have alfonzos's find of Stoner City. While it's basically just a Monopoly clone on a round board, it does come with some of the most bizarre bits I've ever seen in a game, including bong playing pieces and marijuana dice.

The money for the game features pictures of US Presidents smoking week, the chance cards include such gems as "Your bud is featured in High Life Magazine" and "Your girlfriend gave you crabs", and the Real Estate cards are for places like Dime and Nickle Street, Hydroponics Systems, and Doobie's Smoke Shop. Yes, this game is bizarre and on any other week it probably would have won, but amazingly this week it takes only 3rd place.

The runner up for winner this week is SurfinDecoy's find of Let's Bomb Iraq. This game is one of the best examples of the immaturity that often runs rampant in today's political discourse. The game is clearly anti-Bush and revels in this position with 3rd grade humor like distorting the heads of his administration.

As SurfinDecoy pointed out, the agenda cards are meant to be satirical, but they really aren't very funny. Just saying, "Ban Gays in the Military" or "Teach Creationism" when you hold the opposite view doesn't really make for biting social commentary.

The game also delights in the Republican's sex scandals from the last few years with that being the primary way of lowering another player's influence. (But don't worry, Rush Limbaugh can provide an alibi for you if a player accuses you of infidelity!) Whether you agree with the politics or not this is a truly bizarre game and I can't even imagine the most far-left liberal democrat actually wanting to play.

These were all great WTF finds, but the winner this week has to go to davex's find of Public Assistance. This game indulges in the same juvenile practices as Let's Bomb Iraq but falls on the opposite side of political spectrum and manages to be ten times more offensive and ugly. The goal of the game is to make as much money as possible from welfare or a cushy government job. Getting a real job is a sure-fire strategy for losing and thus if you are ever unfortunate enough to get one you should try to lose it as quickly as possible so you can get back on Welfare. Gee, do you think the designer had a bit of a chip on his shoulder?

Card samples from the game include:
Quote:
WORKING PERSON'S BURDEN
You are up for a high-paying promotion, but Government 'Affirmative Action' rules require that a 'disadvantaged' minority, homosexual, Buddhist female be promoted over you. Lose $500.
and
Quote:
WELFARE BENEFIT
Your fifteen year old daughter is pregnant out of wedlock. Collect $200 benefit when you reach or pass 1st of month.

The game board features many ways to make money as well including stealing from the collection plate at church, stealing social security checks, robbing a sandwich store. There also spaces that require you to spend your government money such as gay bars and prostitutes.

Now don't get me wrong, I am no fan of the current welfare system and I believe that it needs some serious overhaul to fix it. However, this game's racist and homophobic overtones are just disgusting and the implications that everyone on Welfare is avoiding getting a real job are flat out stupid. Politics aside, this game is just disturbing.

The only hesitation I had in nominating this for WTF FOTW was that the game gallery has only a handful of pictures, most of which don't provide any detail of the board or cards. I'm hoping that davex will upload a few to celebrate his win this week. Congratulations to Dave! He is this week's winner of 5 !

October 26 - November 1 2009

Another week has passed and once again I find myself tasked with the difficult challenge of determining which thrifter purchased the most bizarre game. If you ever find these titles on your dance card at some future game party, think of me when you exclaim, "WTF!?"

First up this week is a really stupid game that I picked up called Middle Age Crazy. This is really basically an Ungame for the mid-40s set, but it somehow manages to be even more awkward then you might imagine from that description. Check out some of these questions that players are meant to answer:

Quote:
I'm going Middle Age Crazy because my 14 year old daughter wants us to buy her a subscription to Play Girl magazine. What would you say? Why, why not?

I'm going Middle Age Crazy because my husband and I have been trying to have a baby for many years but I have not been able to conceive. My husband had suggested that I have an affair with one of our single friends who he likes and conceive that way. Would you do it without the friend knowing that you intended to get pregnant?

gulp

Most of the questions are fairly benign but there are several like the above ones that seem like they could drive the game to a screeching awkward halt.

Here's a question for you. I'm hoping to sell this game on eBay for extra Christmas money. WTF am I thinking?

Next up was MK-Ultra71's find of Quick Jump It's a Skunk!. Any game that features a motorized spinning skunk is a surefire candidate for WTFFOTW but Mike earns bonus points for his description of the game.

MK-Ultra71 wrote:
Its a Looping Louie with less loop and more skunk.

Next up, Great_Mazinga makes a bid for the WTF Title with find of the fart comedy classic, Gassy Gus. To learn more about this game, let us turn to the inexplicably detailed review by Todd N.
Furunkulus wrote:
The top part of his head acts like a pump, so when it is pulled up and pushed down it pumps his balloon belly up. After being pumped up a few times Gus "passes gas" thus deflating the balloon and making a fart noise in the process.

The interesting thing that surprised me is that Gus doesn't always pass gas on the same number of pumps. In our several plays he has passed gas anywhere between 4 to 14 pumps. This makes it nice since it is unpredictable when he is going to fart.

If you are looking for a fun party filler or just something funny to play I would recommend this game; on the other hand if your looking for something deep like Caylus with farts then your search has not ended.

Check out this box cover.

I was sorely tempted to give this game WTFFOTW, but Dan H made a very good argument against it.
Dannysland wrote:
I don't know, there are a dozen or so flatulence games in the DB, so it seems like a pretty obvious joke to me -- very "Spencer's Gifts", if you know what I mean. I don't say "WTF" when someone makes a fart joke.

So, we move on to the 1st runner up which is davex's find of Political Asylum. Honestly, this game may have taken first place if I weren't still recovering from the ham-handed knee-jerk politics of last week's winner and runner up. And really, after Public Assistance, the political "humor" in this game seems downright tame. Conservative cards feature noble eagle, Liberal cards feature ugly pigs. Liberals love to not have jobs and get free money whereas conservatives are hard working and moral. It does receive a bonus point for this certificate which is used to nominate a player to the liberal party's presidential candidate.

An award for "Outstanding Achievement in Politically Correct Social Activism?" "Tyrannical puritan ethics initiated by our hopelessly misguided founding fathers?" Yeesh! Over dramatic much?

Finally, this week's winner. Two times lucky, pete belli found a copy of Oops and Downs. Not only does it win WTFFOTW, it also wins Bad Pun of the week. The game is a pretty simple kids' game in which the goal is to rescue the kitten on the top of the firehouse. Apparently it is basically a remake of Chutes and Ladders. However, there is one aspect of this that makes it a little freaky in my mind.

Pete describes it as such:
pete belli wrote:
These plastic firemen...

... make odd kazoo noises as they slide down a clear plastic tube inside the multi-story cardboard firehouse.

Weird

Yes. Weird. I guess it may be entertaining to children, but I think this is one of those childrens' toys that would haunt my nightmares. As Dan H describes it:
Dannysland wrote:
Whereas, firemen sliding down tubes making kazoo noises is like something out of The Forbidden Zone.

The game may not be freakish at all... but the noise those firemen make in my imagination is very WTF.

Congratulations to Pete. He now takes another 5 of my hard earned Geekgold simply by buying something weird. (Insert lame liberal/conservative joke here.)

November 2 - 8 2009

This week's thrift list were surprisingly short on WTF finds. Nothing really so bizarre as to me make my jaw drop in disbelief like we've had in weeks past with Humanopoly and Public Assistance. Also, I didn't find anything WTFable at all, but I did pick up ASL SK1 which I'd much prefer to find to Guts the Game anyway.

First off, okiedokie recommended that hawkeyept's find of Nix be nominated for this list because he claims it is weird. I went through and read the BGG description and thought it was more boring then weird so I'm going to need more details on the game.

As usual, there were several games with vaguely WTF Titles. kenchan13 started things with his find of Escape the Mad Mummy. Weird name, boring gameplay. Next up, autumnweave found a game dedicated to Garden Gnomes with some of the cheapest components known to man. Rounding off the list of stupid names, soltan gris found a game called Cogno: The Alien Adventure Game and kingmaker fan picked up Horses are the Best!. Congratulations, you all get an honorable mention award.

Let us move on to the actually nominees! First we have Celinashope who found Mary-Kate and Ashley Friendship Connection. She claims that she needed the game for a Print-and-Play project, but I believe she wants to see if the power of friendship will be able to counteract the negativity of wargames. If she puts this game in a room with Squad Leader, the two games' combined powers could create a space-time vortex that could destroy us all!

gulp

Next up, we have kenchan13 who picked up Goth: The Game of Horror Trivia. The Goth game primarily gets its nomination because so many of the questions resolve around things like how long did it take police to discover Layne Staley's dead body. Horror film trivia, sure, but making a trivia game about actual dead people is pretty F'd up.

Fellow thrifter, pmboos recommended that kingmaker fan's find of Pinocchio be added to this list. He thought it was odd that game play revolves around Pinocchio's clothes, which he is correct about. But he neglected to mention this picture, which I find a little disturbing. Pinocchio gets 3rd place.

In second place is Robrob's find of some custom dice that are used for math problems... that glow in the dark. Because everyone loves playing math games at night. I'm not sure what I can say to add to the weirdness of that. Unfortunately, RobRob has not posted any pictures of the dice so you'll just have to imagine doing division at night.

Finally we have this week's winner: lostdog and his find of The World of Tank Girl. Now, I am first to admit that I am pretty ignorant when it comes to RPGs so this sort of thing may be perfectly normal over on RPG Geek. Also, this game's description seems to indicate that it is some sort of a joke. However, when the back of the box reads, "How does a mutant wallaby stand up against a Ripper? How fast can Tank Girl's tank go? What happens when Jet Girl crashes her jet into Sub Girl's sub? Who fills out the insurance claim?" it leaves no question in my mind that this game beats the competition to claim the inglorious title, WTF FOTW.

lostdog has been awarded 5 Shiny GG.

November 9 - 15 2009

I apologize for being a few weeks behind on this. Between Black Friday and CyberMonday, I've been swamped at work plus I've been working on my yearly eBay sale of thrifted games. Selling 90+ games is great to get some Christmas spending money but it is very time consuming!

Anyway, I've finally got some down time so I took the opportunity to start getting caught up on my WTF duties.

First up, we've got the stupid name of the week with kingmaker fan's find of Rainbow Riders. A close second is Meander's find of Globopolis. It certainly wins best box cover:

We've also got another find of a previous winner, Public Assistance, found by joewyka. I think this game is weird enough to win more than once but I decided that probably wasn't fair to the other entries.

Honorable mention this week goes to ozak and his find of Hip Flip, some sort of joint Hula Hoop game that may have some value for 14-year-olds on group dates but probably has little value outside of that.

In third place this week is Great_Mazinga and his find of Monster Mash. In this game, players get to whack monsters with sticks!

In second place, we have MartinStever making his first appearance on this list (which is amazing considering the amount of questionable games he purchases ) with his find of Save Our Bureaucrats. This is another political game produced by some right wing nut cases in which the goal is to lose your job and collect all the welfare money that the government will hand you. (Just like in Public Assistance although apparently this one isn't quite as spiteful.)

Sadly, this is the only image for the game.

This one almost got bumped into the number one spot just because I saw that the publisher was S.O.B. of Montana. Being a Montana boy myself, and knowing that there ain't no right wing nutbag like a Montana right wing nutbag just about gave this one the edge - but I just couldn't bring myself to award this coveted prize to another political game.

At least not when I saw this...

krhorneman takes home the prize of 5 shiny this week for his find of scary head the game, Let's Face It. Not only does this try to accomplish the impossible task of making Mr. Potato Head into a game, it also apparently sells on eBay for upwards of $130! WTF indeed!? But whereas Mr. Potato Head just looks like a potato (or is just a potato in original versions), these things look like the freaky dolls from Halloween Spook Alleys!

Last month, my wife and I went to a local Salt Lake Halloween attraction at This is the Place Village. The opening room was filled with scary dolls and a toothless hunchback man trying to shove one into your face. I think if you were to ask her what the scariest part of the attraction was, she would say the doll room. And if you asked her to play this game, she would start having flashbacks and start to cry.

So congratulations to krhorneman! He wins this week's WTF FOTW prize!

November 16 - 22 2009

I'm still working on playing catch up since I got a few weeks behind on this. I'm hoping to get another entry up this weekend and get caught up to the thrift lists quickly.

I had a great time going through this week's thrift list as there were several games I marked as potential candidates for this week's prize. There really wasn't anything that jumped out at me demanding to win (but then I've been desensitized by Humanopoly) and I actually had a hard time picking this week's winner.

As this list has evolved, I've noticed certain traditions forming in the way I put together the entries. One of those is that I always begin the list with the thrift game purchased with the stupidest name. This week, that prize goes to davex and his find of Steve Jackson's Battle Cattle: The Card Game. I don't know anything about this game, but it looks like it falls more on the Munchkin side of the Steve Jackson product line rather then the Ogre side. But then, I probably don't have too much room to talk since I wrote a computer game in Jr. High called Cow Man (GWBasic!) - it was about a Cow who was banished from his home planet (a planet where cows walked like men) and eventually found himself on Earth where he foiled the plans of a girl named Carla (a classmate of mine) to destroy the Prodigy Network and force everyone to use Compuserve. (I was a Prodigy fan back in the day. Click here kids and learn how the interwebz used to be! Or click here and dare to enter the Mad Maze!)

Next up we have two games competing for ugliest components. First is Great_Mazinga's find of Impact Zone which is closely followed by Thosw's find of Murphy's Magic Island. Or maybe it's the other way around - I can't decide which is worse because I can't stand to look at horribly contrasting colors for long enough to come to a decision!

Honorable Mention Awards:
1.) Bacchus's find of Audit - The Tax Game. I read the description for this and it sounds like it's about as much fun as you'd expect from the title. The game involves people who are trying to cheat their way out of taxes changing their taxable money into tax-free money by dumping it into tax shelters and such. More of a painfully sad simulation of real life then a game I'm afraid.
2.) pete belli's find of Foreplay. I think I've seen this game mentioned on a few geeklists before but can't remember anyone actually finding it on the thrift lists. This is a game for lovers along the lines of An Enchanting Evening which is more of an excuse to touch each other and whisper sweet nothings to each other then an actual game. When I married JonnyLawless's sister, we got something similar as a wedding gift. It was called Sexy Dice or something. One dice told you what to do and the other dice told you where to do it. We actually found it incredibly unsexy as one of the dice sides was "ear" and that just opened the door for a lot of WTF interpretations. All of these types of games are, in my opinion, really sort of WTF ideas for board games.
3.) goalie4hire's find of Body Language. This might not normally make the WTF list since it is basically Charades, but WTF is Lucille Ball doing on that box!?

shake She deserves better.

The Top Three WTF Games of the Week
3.) Bacchus earns his second mention of the week with his find of Snakes in the Grass. Aside from the fact that this game looks to be about on par with Monkey Auto Races in terms of quality, this is perhaps on of the most brazenly WTF examples of the "Dad in a Suit" 1960s box covers that I have ever seen.

Dear Marketing Department: WTF is wrong with you? No one ever wore a suit to play this game! I simply can't imagine Don Draper ever coming home and playing this - much less in his work attire.

2.) mitzufuss earns second place this week thanks to his find of Hugs & Tickles. In this game, each player is trying to escape "The Blues" which they do by hugging and apparently tickling each other - which make The Blues go away. If you can read that description without gagging, congratulations, you are a 7 year old girl. Go watch Twilight while the rest of stammer out, "WTF" through our disgusted retching and tears for humanity.

1.) davex also gets two list mentions this week, thanks to his find of Do the Urkel. I was really torn this week on which game should win and this game came very close to taking 2nd place to Hugs & Tickles. However, when I read the description of what came in this box - I simply couldn't not give it the grand prize.
Here is Dave's description from his thrift entry.

Thanks almost entirely to the Urkel Finger Puppet (seen above), davex wins this week and joins pete belli in the multiple winners club.

Lucille Ball isn't the only comedian forced to make a buffoon of themselves on a game box this week. The above image actually makes me feel a bit sad for Jaleel White. (Although not too sad since he probably made more money then I have ever have for this routine.)

Anyway, congratulations to davex! He is this week's winner of 5

Ug, obviously, my goal of getting caught up on this list over Christmas break didn't quite work out. Nonetheless, I promise that this list is not dead and I remain committed to highlighting the WTF games that show up on the weekly thrift lists.

To be completely honest, I wasn't totally blown away by the WTFness of the finds this week. The lofty heights this list has seen in weeks past were sadly lacking from this week's collection of good finds.

Starting off the list with this week's stupidest game name is pete belli's find of Bee Bopper. Though I have to admit that the Beeples look pretty cool and would fit well if Agricola ever added a honey harvesting expansion.

The award for game with the weirdest components for this week probably has to go to Great_Mazinga and his find of Piranha Panic. The orange and blue overload of this game might appeal to Boise State fans, but I can't imagine anyone else wanting to look at this game long enough to play it!

Honorable Mention Awards:
None this week. There were barely enough games to populate the top three spots!

The Top Three WTF Games of the Week
3.) For the 2nd week in a row, the Charades game, Body Language shows up on the list simply because of the humiliating photos of Lucille Ball plastered all over the box. I hope she got loads of money for that. This week the game was found by Randy Cox.

2.) Number two was Kilgore_Smores's find of a die spinner in his copy of Zero Zap. The die spinner doesn't look like it actually came with the game. Obviously, finding a spinner is nothing unusual in a thrift store, but a spinner with actual die faces!? WTF!?

1. Kilgore_Smores takes the 1st and 2nd place this week thanks to his find of Boohbah Get Up & Giggle Game. I don't know what the hell a Boohbah is, but it definitely looks a little freaky. I'm not sure I'd want to Get Up and Giggle with those blob-like things.

Congratulations to Kilgore_Smores! He is this week's winner of 5 !

November 30 - December 6 2009

I was a little more impressed with some of the WTF finds this week then I was last week. Way to step it up on picking up the weird and unusual guys and gals!

WTF Game Title:
First off, as always, we'll award the game with the stupidest title. This week, actually, the award goes to the game with the stupidest subtitle. Last week's winner, Kilgore_Smores, picked up a copy of Freshwater Fishing Card Game: The Next Best Thing to the Real Thing. Yeah, I'm sure it is. shake

WTF Game Components:
The most WTFable components award is a tough one this week. Several games qualify made my potential list (including a few that show up in the top three candidates) but I think I'll have to give the prize to Great_Mazinga and his find of Tipsy Towers. The little dudes in falling positions definitely make the scales tipsy in his direction! (And the award for worst pun of the week goes to me!)

Honorable Mention Awards:
Starting off the list the list of games that almost but not quite made the cut was fastfrank23's find of Drinkers Wild. Frank specifically mentioned that he purchased the game for WTF Secret Santa - and I think it must have made an excellent gift! Who knew Avalon Hill had a drunk games department!?

Next up is a game that has already been nominated before on this list, Pinocchio, this time found by K_I_T. This game will always have a special spot on this list thanks to this classic image:

Finally, we have ReignsEternal's find of Pollution Solution. Once upon a time, I was lucky enough to find this game and submit a few pictures to the database. While I appreciate the game's "Don't Litter" message, it gets a little heavy handed and just skimming the rules makes you think that Al Gore is pretty moderate on the global warming stuff when compared to the game.

The Top Three WTF Games of the Week:
3.) First up this week we have an odd little Villa Paletti/bunny hybrid thing, ChonChuuk's find of Tower of Bunnies. It looks like a fairly standard stacking/dexterity game, but who in the world came up with the idea of replacing regular blocks with rabbits? And a follow up question, Why?

2.) Next up, Bacchus takes home the 2nd place prize with his find of Rapelli. Surely, you've heard of Rapelli, it's the awesomely fun game about pushing and pulling caterpillars through a piece of bamboo. You know, like you do.
The game wins bonus WTF points for having the one and only component picture submitted by Jason Matthews, the designer of Twilight Struggle. Who knew this was included in his spare time hobbies.

1.) The winner this week has to be K_I_T, for his find of the Nauseating Blue Pancake: The Game, otherwise known as Flippin' Flapjacks. Seriously, anytime I am skimming through the weekly thrift list and I see an image that makes me ill to my stomach, I know we've got a strong WTF FOTW contender! Green, Blue, Red, Pee-Yellow - what appetizing colors to choose when making a food related game! Just to top it off though, the pancakes all have furry faces on them! gulp

Congratulations to K_I_T, he may have grossed me out with his find, but he nonetheless wins this week's prize of 5 ! And just to be a little extra nice, from now on the 2nd and 3rd place winner will wine 2 and 1 respectively! So congratulations to ChonChuuk and Bacchus! (And apologies to everyone who won 2nd and 3rd place before I came up with this idea! )

December 7 - 13 2009

Woo hoo! I'm getting caught up! Two of these in one week! My goal is to get caught up with the actual thrift lists and then not fall behind again. Somehow I imagine that it is not quite as much fun to find out that you've won the WTF FOTW prize a month after purchase.

WTF Game Title:
We'll being with the most WTFing Game Title of the week, an award I think I have to bestow upon mirrordude for his find of Therapy: V.I.P. Edition. From the sound of his comments, he actually enjoys the game, so I wish him many happy plays - despite the stupid name.

WTF Game Components:
None of the games on this list were really jumping out at me as having weird components and I almost thought I'd have to leave this section unawarded this week. However, one game caught my eye on the list and as I dug through the game's images, I decided it would qualify. I've had a long love/hate relationship with Steve Jackson games. They have made some truly excellent stuff over the years but they have also put out some absolute sh*t. Judging by the rating, I'd say slapymcgee's find of Greed Quest, is in the latter category. Now maybe this style of artwork is your thing, but it sure isn't mine (and I'm the judge) so most WTF Game Components goes to these:

Honorable Mention Awards:
Starting off the WTF Honorable awards this week are two games based on crappy TV shows. The WTF probably stands more for WHY the F--- in this case though, as in WhyTF were these made in the first place and WhyTF did anyone by them? So soltan gris and Bien, congratulations on getting a not for your respective finds of The Love Boat World Cruise Game and All My Children (despite the former's favorable comparison to Hannibal: Rome vs. Carthage.

Finishing off the list of honorable mentions is Meat, who found another copy of last week's 3rd place winner, Tower of Bunnies! It's still every bit as odd as it was last week!

The Top Three WTF Games of the Week:
3.) In third place this week, we have (if I'm not mistaken) the first female to win a nomination in this list, scoutmom for her find of Doorways to Adventure! I suppose that as VCR games go, this one really isn't that unusual, but the box definitely earns it some WTF points. Terrible 80s fashion, check. Terrible actor in terrible costume leaping from TV onto the gaming table, check. Terrible 80s "photoshopping," CHECK!

2.) In second place we have davex making his return to the list with his find of Ghettopoly. I don't think there is much I can say that hasn't already been said. This game is fairly well known for it's offensive racial stereotypes as well as being seized and destroyed by the government in 2004 for violating Monopoly's trademark. (Though I think most people agree that the trademark violation wasn't the primary motivation since the other 10,000 monopoly rip offs remain mostly un-destroyed.) All of these factors make the game a pretty valuable collector's item as well. Dave earns a bonus point for his joke when posting his find.

1.) In first place this week is phragged for his awesome find of Wabbit Wampage! This game not only has a bizarre name (it almost won both 1st prize and most WTF Game Title this week), it also has the weirdest theme this side of Devil Bunny Needs a Ham. Rabbits vs Farmers - weapon of choice: Chainsaws! How awesome is that!? There aren't a ton of component pictures on the site (you can help with that phragged! ) but it looks like it has sort of Bugs Bunny feel to it. (Though with the chainsaws it is perhaps even more violent then dropping anvils on heads!) I think this is the WTF game that I would enjoy playing more then any other game that has won thus far.

Congratulations to this week's winners!
phragged takes home 5
davex gets 2
and scoutmom wins 1

December 14 - 20 (16 pages/376 games)

AS Chris mentioned, myself and Kevin will be working on keeping the WTF FOTW awards alive and well. Chris will still be handling the awarding of I hope we can do as good as job as Chris did (and he'll still be making appearances so keep an eye out for them)

WTF Game Components:
There are currently 7 different Zobmondo games so it's not uncommon and even readily available in stores today but if you ever get the chance, check out some of the questions - guaranteed to illicit a few WTF. Unfortunately, there are no up close pictures of the cards in this edition's entry but nevertheless an honorable mention for hawkeyept's find of Zobmondo!! Would you rather...? Twisted, sick and wrong. Late night.

Honorable Mention Awards (in no particular order):
Although I have seen this game a time or two, it wasn't until I took a closer look at Great_Mazinga find that I couldn't help but think seperated at birth?

Other honorable mentions include Bacchus find for Rushin' Russian, Kilgore_Smores find for Pig Pong which might be a familar site to many of us, it's still a good WTF for someone who has not yet seen it. Last but not least, it would be an injustice to not give respect to soltan gris' find of No Respect: Rodney Dangerfield's Game

The Top Three WTF Games of the Week:
3) soltan gris' also picks up 3rd place with his find of the Twilight Zone Game or more specifically the game board for it.

After looking how much a complete copy of this game goes for, I'd be wonder W(here)TF is the rest of it? Still, a worthy find and I'm a sucker for old board games based on TV shows.

2) It's a party game for women, or a fashion accessory for well, anyone as pete belli illustrates with his find of Go Goddess

1) In the end, first place came down to a scarf or a Smurf, and the Smurf takes home the prize of 5 bag K_I_T's find of Smurf Spin-A-Round Game is the WTF FOTW winner

I believe Chris will still handle the awarding of so keep an eye on your geekgold account for the deposit

December 21 - 27 (11 pages/266 games)

Despite only having 266 entries this week, there were quite a few candidates for WTF FOTW.

A few specific awards:
WTF Box Art: Press Ups for this edition's cover:

WTF Game Components: Group Loop (and to think I passed on this!)

WTF Celebrity Endorsement: Ed McMahon for Guest Host

WTF Movie Tie-In: Shag, Marry, Kill (Austin Powers variant of Marry, Date, or Dump)

And now the honorable mentions for the WTF FOTW:
Because someone loved Boggle and Twister so much, we get Body Boggle

Schaper was apparently hoping The Twizzle Game would catch on like Cootie

I've been called this before Sleeping Grump

And onto the winners:
3rd place: Trivial Pursuit meets Operation in Caliburn's find of a Euro game game from Europe in Dilektron. A game about questions on European Traffic Regulations that features this thing

2nd place: pete belli trades in his scarf for an elephant this week and takes 2nd place in back-to-back weeks for his find of Nutty Elephant

And in case you are wondering how it plays, check out Pete's Review

1st place: KenToad takes home the WTF FOTW with What the F*ck?
Yes, apparently there is a game named that. It looks to be a drinking version of Zobmondo (not that Zobmondo isn't already one as well).

December 28 - 31 (13 pages/301 games)

A few specific awards:

WTF Box Art: A little retro look from Milton Bradley's reprint of Mystery Date.

It's just not possible for a girl to be as skinny as the one opening the door...or is it?

WTF Game Components: Milton Bradley trying to create a new "Twister-like" game in the early 70s. Unfortunately, there are no pictures of the actual game components but I thrifted this once and it would certainly qualify. Having said that, if anyone should have this game, here's a chance at some quick bag

WTF Game Name: KooKooNauts but it was also a contender for WTF Game Components

And now the honorable mentions for the WTF FOTW:
A late 70's game by Hasbro which is also lacking pictures is Smack-it. The French version which shows the game board

I just know some of you are waiting for Squatter to get re-released to get sheepmeeples but until then, these will have to suffice

And onto the winners:
3rd place: Not to be outdone by sheep, chickens (and our Thrifty King) take 3rd with Chuck-It Chicken!.

2nd place: soltan gris makes another appeance in the WTF FOTW top 3 with his find of The Shirt Tales Game.

Remember those guys?

What about now? Then you are one of the lucky ones...

1st place: With his find of Anima , Meat takes home the winner of this weeks WTF FOTW
