Just some short impressions of the games I played, watched or learned in Essen.

If you want to use this list to know if a game might catch your interest keep in mind that I prefer deeper Euros but can also have fun with much simpler games if they have the special something. Have a look at my ratings to get an impression.

I'll update this list after more impressions although I'm pretty sure I'll be busy tommorrow. So Saturday evening it is...

Update: Well, some might have recognized it. I updated yesterday evening and this evening, as I somehow found the time and was motivated because of the many thumbs. Unfortunately I can't promise the same for tommorrow as our group will meet in the evening to celebrate the birthday of one of us. And I don't know if I'll be able to post anything after 4 days Spiel and a party .

Ok, I haven't played it in Essen, but in Aachen, where we had a chance to play the prototype. Well, now I've bought it without second thoughts, that should tell you enough...

I keep on cheating as I've also not played this at Essen but in my living room about 11 months ago . Adds even more choices to Agricola and I love it (and now also own it).

After reading the rules I bought this one yesterday and used the evening to check if I did right. Yes, I did! Very funny if you like to be evil and don't care to make a lot of mistakes in your first games. I think I recognized about 20 yesterday where I definitely should have done something else but still had a blast. Nothing for people who want to optimize every action, recommended for almost everyone else.

Also bought this one yesterday without testing it (but after reading the rules). Haven't had the chance to play it yet, but I'm quite optimistic. Three friends with similar preferences liked it (very much) and another one said he'd always play it but wouldn't buy it himself (he thought it is a little bit overloaded).
Maybe I can try it tomorrow in the evening.

Update: Well, it took one day longer but today we found a free table presenting this game so we decided to try it there and then as we didn't had the energy for something completely new (last game this day). Although I can see the point of the above mentioned friend I liked it a lot. I think the hidden objective cards (you can choose 2 out of 6) lead you into a unique direction. Your aim is then to build ships which make many points for themselves but also follow the main objective. To do so you can pimp your standard actions and collect money for bonus actions. All in all very nice although we didn't have the time to finish it.

Oh yeah, another game I haven't played yet, but already bought. But I'm completely sure I'll like it. Not because it helps me making an idiot out of myself, but because I like games where I have to recognize patterns or something alike very fast. If I can have a laugh on top of it it's even better.

Looks very nice but it's no game for me. It has something like a stone-scissor-paper-mechanism for fights (which are the central element) and you have to take your time to make good moves. I like playing more intuitively with heuristics as background and this game would cause me to have a bad feeling after every move as I would know that I could have found a better move if I had just taken more time.

Still i can see why this game might be very suited for other players.

I'm not really sure about this one. I din't play it myself but spent quite some time watching a game and listening to the rules. My fear is that there are just too many ways to make victory points so that the game loses its "grip". But so far that's just a feeling and I have to play it myself to make a final judgement. It still has the potential to become a game I really like, but I'm sceptical.

I've missed this until this evening when I more or less stumbled into this one. In the end it was my pleasure as I really liked it. Nothing very inventive or complete new (except maybe the oneway-setin-mechanism which was new to at least me), but we simply had fun. Develope your workers, place your ships and enjoy the game...

I've seen the video, I've read the rules, now I've also played the game. And it lived up to my expectations. I think it will never become my alltime favorite, but I'll certainly buy one (or better keep it as a wish for christmas due to my limited budget). Very hard decisions between short- and long-term revenues (correct word?) and at first you have the feeling that you won't be able to achieve anything. Slowly you fight yourself into the game, develop and in the end it feels as if you've really achieved something.

Only minus: With the wrong persons there will be probably some longer breaks during the last turns as there are lot of different possibilities to perform your turn during which the others can do close to nothing.

Read the rules, saw the video, had a look over the shoulder and friends giving me their feedback after they've played it. Looks really interesting, surprisingly easy to learn, much shorter than I expected and I definitely want to buy it. I just dont know if I can wait till christmas. I think I'll simply hope that one of my friends'll buy it now so that we can play with his copy.

Update: I've played it this evening so that I could form my own opinion. On the one hand I was a little disappointed as I didn't get the feeling of having as much influence as I wished. But on the other hand it doesn't take half as long as most other games I usually play and also I think that I'll start to get a better feeling for the actions and thus more control. As it's also not very expensive I'd still recommend it though not as highly as before.

Yesterday two friends talked about it and both liked it. So this was the first game we tried today. Being 5 persons we divided the group into 2 players (it can only be played by 2) and 3 spectators who had the job to make stupid comments (they were more successful as at least me, because I lost the game. But I still liked it enough to buy it as it is a strategic game which you can still play very fast with just trying some moves.

This one shared a booth with Monkey Dash so we stayed right there. Although the explanation was sub-optimal I think the game was a nice filler. Very fast, no brain-burner but still something to think about. It contains multiple blind auctions in which you also buy cards which you can use for bidding in later rounds and for scoring at the end of the game. Special cards give bonus points for combination. One of us 5 bought it I thought it was ok, but won't buy it because of my budget the others were not convinced.

I would have problems to rate this game. I really liked the central mechanism, but think I'd never propose the game for a play.
The mechanism is that you place tokens in areas on the bord and at the same time influence which areas will be scored next. If you set into an area it raises in the rating list, if you leave an area it sinks.
The problem I have with the game is that I don't enjoy area-maority games with complete information that much because (again) I always have the feeling of missing the optimal move.

This game has a lot of buzz going around it and also some good comments so we decided to give it a try. As there was noone available to explain it I took the role of reading the rules and explaining it. And this is already the real downer. I think the rules are really, really bad. They are very redundant and the most important things are explained at the very end so that you only then get the big picture and now have the feeling you have to repeat all other rules again to understand the game.
Exactly when we finished the rules the table beside us became free and as we all were annoyed by the rules we decided to switch and play Machtspiele.
I think we will try Opera again another time as it might be an ok game, but the rules really discouraged us.

This was on the neighbour table and we were quite motivated. The rules were already really funny if you like the sarcastic/realistic view on the operations in businesses.
After the rules were finished the first rounds lowered our enthusiasm as we had to concentrate on our very many options and had to reduce our stupid comments.
It took us quite some while to realize the interactions between the different actions. In fact I think we only realized them at the very end although some of us did by chance or by intuition choose quite some good combinations. With bribing, firing people and trying to bug the opponents it seems to be a game I'll also enjoy in the future. I'll either buy it myself or hope that someone else of my regular group will do so.

This was our last game on the fair (I hope this evening some will follow) and we really enjoyed it. It was explained by the lady you can see on the cover of Loyang . It has an interesting mechanism of choosing your actions and the order in which they can be performed. Even more interesting is the area where you can place your ships. The mechanism with which the ships are moved within the area is very interesting and you have to get used to it before you can really profit from it.
All of us enjoyed the game quite much and it's another game I hope to see again in the collections of my most common opponents .

More later this evening or tommorrow.

Update: This seems to become the big surprise of this Spiel. At 16:30 it was at the top of the fairplay-ranking. This was even more surprising as it was not part of the original list handed to the voters (Subscribers of Fairplay get a list with a table of nearly all new games except some games which somehow were not announced early enough. So Usually you just have to enter a ranking number like German school marks for each game you played. Games not on the list have to be entered manually in free lines before you can rank them.), but still received at least 25 votes which made it quite comparable with other members of the top ten.

5 minutes later: One word about the rankings in general: This year there are three major ranking locations on the Spiel which rate quite differently. For me personally Fairplay has the highest information value as chances are good that they meet my taste.
The BGG ranking is very different. One the one hand obviously mainly non-germans vote there. This means that there'll be more war games and the like on the list. That per se is ok for me as I can privately "filter" it. A little more difficult is that I am a German hardcore-gamer who still prefers different games than hardcore-gamers from other countries (sure, a generalization, but I'm pretty sure it has some truth in it). Many games rated highly by non-germans are here seen as "family games" which is nothing negative at all but usually not at the top of the list of Fairplay subscribers. These usually want less luck and more new mechanisms.
Additionally the BGG-ranking is (stronger than the Fairplay-ranking) influences by blind buyers. To take Loyang as an example: I'm pretty sure there have been quite some people buying Loyang or similar games without testing it and he thus also didn't rate it. The ones rating it were the ones who were sceptical from the start. Something like this could be seen with Le Havre last year which steadily climbed in the rankings later on.

That said I should mention the third ranking from Hall9000. Here only the members of hall9000 vote which results in a relatively low number of votes. They tend to meet my taste but there are more than once so few votes that it can be just the "wrong" persons voting for a game so that I certainly don't rely on these ratings.

This was our first game today. As we are group of around 7 people (changes during the day) it was quite nice that it could be playe by 6 of us. I was the one watching as I saw a friend on the neighbour table and wanted to have chat during the game.
But during the half game that was played I replaced two players (not at the same time ) which had to leave for -eh- important business . So I could have a look at the game from quite different angles. I'd say it is quite nice. Definitely nicer than I expected. There's almost nothing really new in it but the concepts are mixed into a good cocktail. The only mechanism worth mentioning is the following: As seen before you place workers (often multiple workers per action). These workers stay occupied until after the same action one turn later. This was new for me and I liked it. Still I certainly won't buy the game as it is definitley too expensive for what it contains and represents.

(To further explain my criteria: Colonia is about 5 euro more expensive than Loyang and contains more components of the same quality. So far I'd see it as a tie, but Loyang has a really new mechanism and is the first game by new publisher taking a high risk. This settles the case for me...)

Was this the next game? I honestly don't know anymore. Too little sleep the last nights with too much input during the day. But I do know that I played this one and was very positively surprised.
Published by Amigo I suspected it to be not that deep and also after listening to the rules I wasn't convinced. But while playing I (and the others) did have fun and the end was pretty close and exciting.

As seen in many games you have to receive resources which are then used to build different building which improve your possibilities in some way etc. Sounds like a thousand games before. And in fact in some way it is. But I'd say it distilles the interesting aspects by reducing them on the most relevant point and then mixing them:
Building and expanding the different building levels just takes as many different resources as the number of the level is. Depending on the building you receive more resources, more movement, more building units (which always have to start at one point of the map unless you've build another building which provides you with a new entry point), general military strength or a military unit only responsible for the field they are in.
Finding the right order to build is crucial and is even more interesting as you have to pay resources if you want to build in a (limited) area where another player has already built before you. Also the fighting is interesting: You don't fight directly, but every building action might make the local population more angry which then attacks each player in this area. So your military strength in this area should be strong enough. Attacking buy building my own building is an interesting concept.
In my eyes this game is worth a look.

Well, this was an accident. We were all tired and decided that we should stop walking around and just sit down at the next possibility. The next possibility happened to be this game table. "Age 8+...?" Well, who knows, let's have a look at the rules. Then the first two sentences contained obvious grammatical errors... I don't want to be a nit-picker here but that's a downer for me. If you translate it (and I'm perfectly fine if you don't - like Monkey Dash or Sumeria) then please do it right. If I read the first sentence of the rules and have to shake my head because of the grammar my motivation is gone.
Ok, so we decided to just rest our feet for some minutes. Or so we thought because a friendly Dutch entered the table, asked if we knew the game and started explaining as we said no. Being polite (and of course tired) we said nothing and listened. Don't want to go into details, but while I like the basic idea of the game there was just no tension for a lot of moves. I'm pretty sure close to the end there'll be some interesting moves (especially with a no-luck-variant the Dutch told us) but we were not patient enough.

I feel a little bit sorry for the one explaining as he wasted his efforts but this game simply didn't catch our interest.

One of my friends was really interested in this one. He hoped it might fulfill the high expectations he had in last year's Professor Pünschge as a nice deduction game.
Well, I'm afraid I spoiled all his enthusiam...blush While you definitely have to deduce in the game I had the feeling that in the end it's luck dependent. You have a list of cards in your hand and (hopefully) with some of them you can score points by limiting the possible places for crime scenes. This is done by deduction like: This card says it was beside a river so all these listed scenes are impossible and I get a point for each place I excluded. But this deduction doesn't seem too hard so everyone who is at least a little bit experienced in something like this should find the optimal card on his hand (-> luck to have the right cards).
Drawing new cards is nice as the back gives you hints what the card is about so that you can better guess if this card will help you. But in the end it's still luck if you draw a one you can use.

So my hopes for this game (quite similar to the ones of my friend) were destroyed and after I told him my arguments he also didn't buy it...

Although I'm quite sure about my point of view I should mention that we didn't play this one (as we couldn't - it was just explained to us with a built up game scene).

Right now I don't remember any more games I played today (I think I don't but currently I don't trust myself ) so I use the opportunity to say something about some other games which are new editions of known games and thus are also on the lists of new games for this Spiel.

The first one would be Alcazar (previously Big Boss). I already liked Big Boss and after reading the rules of Alcazar I'm sure that they have even improved it. The elements which we critized to be too luck-dependent are removed or changed to be less serious. I'll definitely get this at some time without further testing as i also looks really great and I don't own Big Boss. Probably christmas...

This is a new version of Metro (link is my older review of the game) which I like quite much. Graphics seem to be improved and the new mechanism of investing into colors (= betting on them to make long tracks!?) might be interesting. Probably won't buy it though as I own Metro but I'll try to get informations about the investing-variant.

Not a new implementation but another game I've played about two weeks before Essen. As this is highly rated on BGG I think I should add my opinion especially as it is different from most others.

Our group agreed not to like the game very much. While I enjoyed our second game more than our first one it's still a no-buy for me. What is positive is the feeling of building something which is somehow catched very good. I don't know why but I really had the feeling to build something up. The big problem for us was that while the game suggests that you can influence it a lot it is in fact very luck-dependent. The effects of the events are very strong and you have at best a rough idea when and in which order they will occur. So in the end the order of these event often decides about winning or losing as some buildings offer you protection against one kind of event. If this event hits last, right before the scoring at the end the one owning this building usually wins. Earlier in the game when the building was offered to everyone you had no chance at all to know when this event will occur (unless it already occured in which case the building is worth much less).

So in the end we invested a lot of time and thinking in the game and in the end we "roll the dice" to get the winner. Unfortunately not my kind of game.

I'm very sorry, but this entry has the only purpose of satisfying my need for complaining about some kind of "marketing".

I really like Powerboats! It's a fun game comparable with Formula De (I like it even more than Formula De). But what I don't like is that I can't buy this expansion! Instead I should buy other games of this publisher and for each 10 Euro spent I can get this or another expansion. In my eyes that's close to blackmail and will be treated this way yuk.

As far as I've heard from others the expansion is a nice gimmick adding small elements to the game. Nothing special but nice to have. (Just to say at least a little bit about the game of this entry itself.)
