Finally made it to a Saturday meetup. I was surrounded by 18 other fellow gamers. While I nearly helped close the library down, I may have missed some early games-please annotate/correct as needed.

This was an ambitious game. Korea map plus Power Grid: The New Power Plant Cards. Looked like Jean, Scott, Marcus, Afshin and 2 others were having a fun time of it.

Finally, I get into a game. I joined Chris, Jason, Don, and Aaron in exploring and conquering Small World. I had played Vinci a couple of times, but this was my first go around with the fantasy retheming/update.
I drew first and promptly set up shop w/ the Stout Ghouls. Here are the race/abilities in order for each.
DavidO: Stout Ghouls-->Alchemist Giants-->Diplomat Wizards. The Ghouls went to town early, and declined on turn 3. They hung around until turn 7. The Giants had a hard time taking mountains as the Flying Trolls had lairs there. The Diplomate Wizards were able to make some last turn inroads, but too little too late. I Diplomated Don's Hill Sorcerors to preserve my gains. I got seduced by the ghouls and really couldn't do as much w/ the Giants as I liked.
Chris: Wealthy Skeletons-->Merchant Amazons. Kept a low profile and then rode the Amazons to the end.
Jason: Flying Trolls-->Fortified Ratmen. Good combos and solid play by Jason here.
Aaron: Bivouacking Orcs-->Dragonmaster Halfings-->Commando Tritons. Aaron played a very aggressive/attacking game throughout.
Don: Forest Elves-->Hill Sorcerors. Don also played a quiet game.
Chris: 102 Jason: 83 Don: 83 Davido-59 Aaron: 63
Overall, the theme, production values and cleaned up rules make this a MAJOR improvement over Vinci, which I recall as being fiddly. Small World flowed very nicely. I dig it, and it goes on the wish/Secret Santa list.
Chris and Jason have been playing this a LOT, but were surprised and excited to hear of the expansions that are out or forthcoming.

Yeah, there is a justice in this world, and we were blessed with a game of Railroad Tycoon
I drew the Jay Gould (fewest shares) Tycoon, but still bid 11K (3 shares off the top) to get start player. I did the 1 space/1 link connection of lexington/louisville to get the first connection bonus. It took a while to get going, but I built up that southeast midwest section. I was joined by Jean and Aaron and marcus in the midwest. Scott took Southeast/east coast. david m went for the NE corridor. I did better than I usually do, but still maxed out at 5 train and got outcompeted towards the mid-game. My 7 shares were fewest and canceled out my bonus-but I did make it
Scott: 83 Marcus: 72 David M: 66 Jean: 62 David O: 46 Mike A.: 44
but I got to play my binky

DavidM. really wanted to table this new title. It borrows elements from other games (e.g. Puerto Rico to name one obvious inspiration). I found the tracks and options to be fiddly and tough to wrap my head around. I got a barracks early on and enjoyed breaking out the 'boomsticks'.

We wanted to finish with something middling light and David M. and I agreed on Vegas Showdown. Scott and Jean were new, but picked it up quickly. I got locked out on slots more often than I like, so I went with the Hotel/people/VP route. It was a pretty loose game and we all got plenty of bonuses. I suck at getting 3/4 and full diamonds and that made the difference.
David M.: 70 Scott: 67 Jean: 64 Davido: 55
At least I had fun introducing Scott and Jean to this fun favorite.
