No, not the Top 50 Ranked games. These are the Top 50 games played by Unique Users for the Month of October 2009. These are the "Hot" Games being played by the users of BGG.
UPDATE
I decided to pull stats for this list a week after the month ends, and on a wekkend, so the numbers are closer to "final" numbers (obviously someone could enter more plays a year from now, so I try and pull the stats at a time where the games don't change their rankings). It seems many people log their plays on the weekends so I think it will be more accurate, and gives a chance for the numbers to "settle in."
These lists will come out about a week after the month ends in future months.
This Month:
ESSEN
This month is all about Essen, and the new games that were either released there, the first place where many people got to see them, or buy them, or play them.
Waiting a week to pull the stats, plus trying to figure out these new games, took a little longer to get the list out this month, but I finally got it done.
It will be fun to watch what new games will stay "Hot" in the coming months, and what will fade away. Definitely the "Essen" games this month were probably the creme of the crop, and were "Hot" this month.

About these lists:
I decided to do a weekly list of my favorite stat: Unique User Plays like a weekly Top 20 Music countdown. After making a few of those lists, users recommended I expand the list.
I took up the task of expanding the list by doing a monthly Top 50 list as well was my weekly Top 20. It is Top 50 games played by Unique Users (without Expansions).
I have always found this is a good list to see what people on BGG (who record their plays anyway) are playing. I have used this statistic as a good measure to see what the current hot games are, and especially what the up and coming games are as more players start playing it.
You can see some of the older great games that still hold their own and have real staying power, and the newer hot games that might fade away or become an all time great.

Dominion: Intrigue had 626 Unique User Plays (-43).
Dominion: Seaside had 297 Unique User Plays.
The #1 game was again Dominion. 1458 Unique Users in a month. 1458 Unique Users all time is about #155 all time for BGG Unique Users, and the #1 game this month had that in a month. Dominion is supreme right now for BGG users. Dominion: Seaside made it's debut this month on the list.

Pandemic: On the Brink had 349 Unique User Plays.
A NEW #2!!!
Pandemic was #5 in July and August, and then moved to #4 last month. Pandemic: On the Brink also made it on the list this month. That is probably helping it rise up to #2, but it's rise to #2 is still impressive, and it will be interesting to watch it next month.

A strong increase in players this month was enough to jump over Race for the Galaxy, but not enough to get to #2. It stayed at #3 for the fourth (4th) month in a row.

Race for the Galaxy: The Gathering Storm had 260 Unique User Plays (-20).
Race for the Galaxy: Rebel vs Imperium had 228 Unique User Plays (-38).
Lost some more users this month, and it finally caught up with Race for the Galaxy as it fell to #4. Steadily losing users this month, and also lost the #2 spot in the Weekly Lists.
One (1) month is not enough to make any big judgements, but this month at least, Race for the Galaxy was not "Hot" and it looks like it is cooling off. BUT #4 is still a very good spot to be in, and it would have to fall a great deal more to drop to #5, but it is definitely something to watch.

The classic Eurogame was in the Top 10 when I started these lists, but fell out last month. The oldest game in the Top 20 (if you don't count the original Arkham Horror) is still a major played game, and went up a spot closer to the Top 10 this month.

Nice increase this month. In my Weekly Top 20 lists, someone mentioned Halloween might be a factor for an increase in players for this game, and that might explain the rise this month.

That is a major loss for any game. Was it overhyped, is the limited production hurting more players from playing it, or will it rebound next month?
