Instructions (you WILL need to read them):

The first five items on this list are five choices between two famous games. Each choice will result in a score which you must add to a running total (beginning at zero). The running total may go negative so be careful of your arithmetic! Get a pen and paper if you need it ...

At the end (item 6) you will get instructions on what to do next, which will result in two lists of games: one list will be the games which are under-rated on BGG and you should consider giving them a go (given your preferences in the five choices) and the other list will be the games which are over-rated, and you should avoid them.

The results are based on average ratings on BGG. Obviously the thing is not infallible - there will be games on each list which you totally disagree with - but hopefully not too many!

Remember, the games in each list are NOT meant to be the best games, but the games which are better (or worse) than the BGG averages indicate. They may still suck, just not as much as you thought.

Anyway, hopefully you might discover some games to try which you had not considered before!

Note 1: the pictures of the games in the recommendations items are kind of irrelevant - I just picked a game near the top of the list

Note 2: there are TWO games called Axis & Allies and both appear on some of the lists. This is not an error.

Note 3: want MORE game recommendations? Try my other great list:

Pretty much what I was thinking - thought this would
be something which covered the gamut of games, yet it
seems to be entirely tailored to a segment of gaming
which I've always viewed as fluff and filler.

Both are great games. Where is my thumbs down for the previous poster - looking frantically at the interface. They are perfect for families, couples (Carcassonne), new and old gamers, teenagers etc etc. Obviously a gaming collection needs both not one or the other.

What if I've never played one of the two games? I'll try it by not including a sum for this one. I strongly believe PG would be my pick, so I'll try it that way too. Then, I'll try it the other way, in hopes that I end up liking T&E better than PG (because who wouldn't want to find a game they like better than one of their favorite games)? Also, if I end up being able to choose T&E, I can be all snobby and say things like "People who chose the subtraction option for each choice are clearly very high class gamers," and similar obnoxious comments. A smiley probably belongs here to denote sarcasm, but I am far too snobbish to use smileys. Wash, rinse, repeat...

OK, now its time to GO to your results.

First, remember your total? It will be somewhere between 7 and 22, with a positive or negative sign.

Ignore the sign for the moment, so your total is between 7 and 22.

Go to the item on this list with that number (the picture of the game for the item is kind of irrelevant - I just picked a game near the top of the list)

You will see two columns of games (plus a summary of your choices at the top).

If your sign was positive, look at the LEFT column for the games you should try and the RIGHT column for the games you should avoid.

If your sign was negative, look at the RIGHT column for the games you should try and the LEFT column for the games you should avoid.

GO GO GO!

On the surface, your system works quite well for me! This is my category, preferring the RH column.

I've rated 4 games in the LH column, with an average of 5.5.
I've rated 17 games in the RH column, with an average of 6.8.

I'd be interested in hearing from someone whose preferences are for the LH column tho... Looks to me like the games in the RH column are generally rated quite a bit higher by BGG as a whole.

Exception in the LH column: StreetSoccer is a great game, I rate it 8.
Exception in the RH column: Stone Age is junk, I rate it 4.

Interesting that both of these exceptions have a lot to do with theme - the mechanics of StreetSoccer are so smooth and simple that it almost plays like an abstract, but I like it because it really manages to pull off the theme. On the other hand, a big part of why I don't like Stone Age is the pathetic theme integration.

Impressive! meeple

Settlers vs. Carc and PR vs. Caylus could have gone either way for me, but this list looks like the closest match. I've played (and enjoyed/rated highly) nearly half of the games listed in the right column, but have played only four or five from the left column. Not only that, but of the RH games that I haven't played there are several that I'd like to, but on the LH there's almost nothing (not that I'd be opposed to trying a number of them, but nothing stands out as a "must play").

Works for me, although I've only played 3 of the 10 games I guessed which ones I'd like more.

LH - 2 games, average 7

RH - 9 games, average 9

And I agree with Jonathan on Streetsoccer, even if I haven't played it F2F I've played it online and really enjoy it.

I'm on the right hand column in this and I have to say that of what I've played I agree...except for one glaring error. I HATE Chicago Express.

One other thing...why would Vinci be in one column and Small World in the other? Aren't they "essentially" the same game? Just curious.

Thanks for doing this.

Not really, i liked Vinci, more about the game as a civ building exercise, where the different types of civ's are at least plausible.

Small World I didn't like, it's the same basis but with the emphasis on the races to make it fantasy themed, where the races have special powers and stuff.

I think they would definitely be polar sides of this sort of comparison.

I am a -9 as well. And at first blush, the list on the right looks great as I enjoy most of those games and like to play them regularly.

But there are just as many games on the right that I despise as there are games on the left that I love. And the games on the left that I love, I love as much, if not slightly more, than most of the games on the right.

About the only thing consistent between the lists is of the games I have NOT played, the ones on the right are the ones I have researched the most and the ones on the left were not on my radar.

Maybe I screwed up my score when I said I liked Agricola better even though I never played Le Havre.

The result I got was pretty interesting, at least in my opinion, because a vast majority of games on the left I played and enjoyed, but I've only played two games on the right (Ys and Himalaya) and I absolutely loved them! Though, interestingly enough, I had no interest in most of the rest except Tinner's Trail because my group has a lot of Wallace fans (And I suspect I'll enjoy it as well) and Kingsburg because again a lot of people are playing that in my group right now.

I also want to play the World of Warcraft boardgame, not because I think it'll be one of my favorite games, but I play the MMO and am pretty curious to see how the board game turns out.

I ended up on the right-hand side of this one first time around. Problem is, some of the ones I am basing it on has to go with where I think my interests lie. Example, I've played T&E a couple of times. I like it, but Power grid, which I haven't played yet interests me more. Both Agricola and Le Havre interest me, but Agricola more ot the point I bought it, but it hasn't yet hit the table.

So what I did is change the PowerGrid to T&E and I get to #19, which feels more like what I like. But then, El Grande (#12) left hand side is where I feel my heart truly is with the exception of Magic being in there.

I had to guess my way through some of the unplayed choices to get here. So it's hard to say if this worked perfectly. But I'm sure the right side is more my style.

I've only played 5 games on the right; and two of those are Poker and Chess. I didn't like Jungle Speed; Basari was good (though I wasn't good at it); Kingdoms was okay but mathy.

I've played and enjoyed 8 games on the right side; but 5 of those are Ticket to Ride games. The right does have several games on my radar though.

I guess I just need to play more games.

Hmmm, recommendations list seems potentially good. I base this on the fact that I've played (and enjoyed) 17 of my recommended games already! I've only ever played 4 of the games on my 'avoid' list and I pretty much think they're average or just below. So yeah, guess I'll have to check out some of those other recommendations.

Pretty good! The right side correctly includes many games I like and play a lot: Ticket to Ride, Command & Colors, Combat Commander, Age of Empires III. The left side correctly leaves me cold, except for Diplomacy and Entdecker.

This is where I came out, with a positive score. The left hand "good" column recommended 17 games which I rate a seven or above and only four which I rate a four or less. The right hand "bad" column recommended I avoid two games I rate a seven or above and one which I rate a four or less. That was rpetty darn impressive.

Saw some of my favorite games on the left -- my "good" side -- and was impressed. Looked at the right side, which started with what is probably my second favorite game -- Hmm.

Checking the whole list vs. my ratings, will update with results.

Update:

Here's what I get. Good list has: 1 10; 3 8s; and 1 7. In addition, 3 games are Positives -- either games I like but for one reason or another haven't rated, or games I'm very interested in. 6 games are Negatives -- games I don't like but haven't rated (Go, for example), or that I wouldn't be interested in in the least (the GIPF series.)

The Bad list has: 1 9, 1 8, 2 7s, 6 Positives, and 2 Negatives.

So I looked back at my answers to the original question. In all fairness, I've never played Le Havre, and rated Agricola above it as a guess. So I recalculated what my score would be if I changed that answer, and got +10. Checking that, I get:

Good list: 1 10, 3 7s, 1 4, 2 Positives, 3 Negatives.

Bad list: 1 9, 3 8s, 1 7, 3 6s, 4 Positives, 1 Negative.

Maybe I'm just ... weird.

Interesting concept, though. Wish it were a bit more predictive for me, there are a lot of games on these lists I'm unfamiliar with.

I must be one of the 'outliers'. (yeah I know this isn't scientific).

-12 was my score.

I have rated just 2 games a 10 (out of close to 1,000 games). One of them is El Grande (as well as Wallenstein and Ra at one point in my Top 10). But, I rather dislike Confrontation, Colossal Arena, Liar's Dice, Modern Art and Poker).

Conversely, on my 'good side' I quite dislike Small World, Mare Nostrum, Zooloretto (I don't like to trade away my games, one of the few I've ever gotten rid of), and Fire and Axe. OF course a few of may favs are in this list too, Containter, BSG, and Indonesia. I have played MORE of the right side.

Interesting list though.

+edit+
Leftt side average 6.363636364 (on 22 games)
Right Side Average 6.925925926 (on 27 games)
So the right is a bit better for me.

Although there are fewer unrated games on the rleft side that I'm still interested in, then on the right side

I agree with Mike. The reason might be I like 9 of the 10 games that the calculations were based on so maybe almost all lists are more or less good for me that don't prefer RftG over anything. This list has certainly good games on the left side but I really like some on the right side.

While I admire your work on these lists I'm thinking this list would have worked better if you chose 10 basic games that are more different.

Interesting. I pretty much adore the games in both lists, would never avoid the games in the right list in favour of the left--that would be a disaster (my score was positive).

It's problematic for your system when people are omnivores, like me, I suppose. I like abstracts equally but differently from highly thematic games, which seem to be divided between the lists here. As I like theme and abstraction equally, I suppose my reasons for choosing one game over another would have been related to qualities which you have no way of using usefully--that I despise icons, or that I like the physicality of many wooden bits, or that I like ancient historical themes.

what's interesting is that your 10 'base games' are all really similar type games, and preference of one over the other doesn't seem very meaningful for me--it's as if you listed all of the GIPF games and then came to conclusions based on preference--possible, I suppose, but challenging. In my case, the 10 games used as measurements are all bland and uninteresting compared to the games in both of the results lists above.

But as I own pretty much all of the games from both results lists above, I suppose this fun excercise wasn't so much designed for me. Thanks anyway, though.

This seems to have pegged me in correctly really well (I was a minus sign all along on this one... a nice depressing fall into nothingness). A lot of my highly rated games were listed alongside others I haven't had the chance to play yet. Nice list and I'll have to give the new games I don't know a try. But if they go disasterously wrong, you shall bear my mighty wrath consisting of.... "Op, guess not... way off, next!".... so prepare yourself!

Funny, I'm an outlier too.

The problem for me is that I'd rather play Scrabble or Beyond Balderdash or Loopin Louie than any of the 10 games listed. In every instance (maybe 4 of the 5), I was answering "which of the two games would cause me the least suffering."

Of the games on this list, I'd only actually played Carcassonne and Catan, and I picked Catan. Even though I actually only did one of the entries, the +14 column is games I liked the look of! laugh
However, entry +15 didn't really work for me.

My recommended list contains extremes - several games I love, several games I hate.

The games to avoid list is a little bit closer, but has a few anomalies.

I'll have to take a look at one of the other result sets - I strongly dislike both T&E and Power Grid, so it was a coin flip on that one.

Well, I've already played a fair number from the left and liked/loved them, there are two on the right that I've played and liked but they are fillers and i do prefer longer games with the right crowd.

The ones i haven't played on the left are mostly war games but there's a few in there for me to try out

Interesting geek list!

While there were some tough choices, I ended up with -16, so as I understand it I should hate the games on the left...but it has a half-dozen of my favorites, including my #1 game! It also has several I hate. Go figure..

-16: But I don't like: Talisman 4th Edition, The Republic of Rome, Mare Nostrum, Tower of Babel, Fearsome Floors, Wings of War - Famous Aces

-16: But I like: The Princes of Florence, Amyitis, The Scepter of Zavandor, Yspahan, Notre Dame, Vinci, Kingsburg.

What does that mean?

Interesting, I've played 1 game on side I should like (which I did) and 2 games on side I should avoid (liked them OK) Otherwise, no games I love or play on these lists.

On the Left (which I'm supposed to like) I find several I enjoy, and a number of others I've been wanting to try out.

On The Right is two I have played a lot, Magic which is OK and Citadels which I like, a few I have just tried and found decent (Shogun and Ra) and mostly stuff I'm pretty sure is not my cup of tea.

So Yeah, list seemed correct for me.

Terrifically accurate! I was a -17 and this list is nearly completely spot-on of my highest rated games, games I own and want to play, or games I've looked at and marked as interested.

Of course, there are games on nearly all the lists that I am interested in and liked, but this list is almost completely a hit on every item.

Well done!

Wow, this is incredible! The left side reads like a list of my favorite games: (if you take out the TTR poison gulp ) Civ, TtA, Galaxy Truker, Space Alert, Battlestar Galactica, even Bridge! thumbsup

Those on the right I either haven't played, or tend to not like: Chess, Condottiere, Verrater, Clans. yuk

Very cool. I ended up here with a negative 19. For the most part this all looks spot on. Bravo John!

Only odd balls:

I actually like Brass a lot. The rest of the left side sucks plenty.

As for the ones I "like", I'm actually not a wargamer. But it does hit the Knizia classics:

Throught the Desert
Samurai
Ra
LotR Confrontation
Blue Moon (I actually don't like this one)
Carc: Castle
Battle Line
Lost Cities

And yea, I pretty much rank all those as top tier.

All the wargames on the list are meh to me though

A pretty good hit for me as well - I was a negative. All of the games on the right hand side that I have played I rate highly and I have played most of them as they have appealed to me. The majority of games on the left side I have not played as they didn't appeal - the exceptions 'Stone Age' and 'Through the Ages' both of which I enjoyed and 'Brass' which definitely appeals but I have not played.

Spooky.

Cosmic Encounter is on the left list twice! I suppose that means I should really really buy it.

Seriously, it fit pretty well. I love Space Alert, TI, Descent, Galaxy Trucker and Pandemic, and I'm thinking I should really like Railroad Tycoon, Stone Age, Battlestart Galactica, Roads and Boats, Cosmic Encounter, Shogun, StaCraft and Cosmic Encounter based on the reviews I have read.

I don't care much for Carcassonne, Doom, Ricochet Robots or Chess. However, I do like Lost Cities and Mahjong, so it was not entirely accurate. Nevertheless, I wholeheartedly appreciate the effort. Have some GG.

Of the ones recommended that I've played, I've rated 15, average rating 7.93.

Of the ones I should avoid that I've played, I've only rated 5, average rating 8.3. Of course with such a small sample it may not be representative.

The best way, I think, to empirically test this would be to generate the average rating I've given to the games I've rated for every single list and see if my own recommended list is significantly higher or if there's a trend as you get further from my "number." Unfortunately I'm not bored enough to do that yet.

From this comment you can probably tell what personality type I am.

Isn't this your result John? If so, looks like a bit of a mixed bag for you - you'd miss out on some of your faves on the right (LOTR:TC, WOTR, Shogun), and play some duds on the left (although on a whole the left appears to be the better side for you of the two).

Yes, this is my list, and excepting the LOTR themed games it does pretty well - I despise Taj Mahal, Through The Desert and Samurai. I do like Shogun, although it is cooling on me. And I much prefer Small World to Vinci. On the 'like (LH)' side, the best standout is Through The Ages, which I really dislike.

Oh well!

Lulz...every game that was suggested for me I either own, have owned, or is on my list of games to get already. It just confirmed what I already know; that I may play lighter fare with the family, but more often than not I'm pining for a long brain burner.

Well I'll be darned - it actually sorta works! I kinda like the games on the left, on average, more than the games on the right! Good job!

It didn't work for me. I've tried a goodly number of the games on the right and of those, they rate pretty low. So I'm not inclined to take the other recommendations.

I was secretly hoping Through the Ages would be the top one on this list. Just one more list/article convincing me I should pick it up, in spite of having no one to play it with and no time for it. cry

What happen if I love the games in both columns?

Am I a sort of mutant who should be incarcerated in a high security prison?

Nice job.

I had used your system and found that GO, which I have no interest playing, was on my recommend list. I then went back to 'tweak' the games I was supposed to like and came to a much better recommendation list. Now I know what games I should be liking! Thanks a lot for ths list.

My breakdown, for posterity: (+17)

Dislike: 7 (5 if you count all TtR variants as one game)
Interested: 11
Not interested: 7

Right (not recommended) column:
Dislike: 5
Interested: 1
Not interested: 28

Ending up in the right or left column is decided by the choice between carcassonne and catan. So if you cant decide on that one, the whole system falls flat.

Completely wrong. Yes, the choice between Carc and Catan determines which side you end up on, but as most people have understood, I could have given the choices in any order - PR vs Caylus could have been the first choice with the +14.5 or -14.5 result and the thing would work just the same, except that the same lists would have appeared in a different order on different sides - but you would still have got exactly the same 'try' and 'avoid' lists. The numbers are simply a tool for looking up the list item.
