The 50 best board games according to te Independent Newspaper from the UK.

"From family fun with old favourites to devilishly difficult number-crunching quizzes, Kate Watson-Smyth selects the table-top pastimes to while away those rainy days"

http://www.independent.co.uk/extras/indybest/outdoor-activit...

I've quoted some reviews of the games in question from BGG to contrast what the reporter has said.

Enjoy!

STRATEGY

The Indepedent Says:

"The joy of this is that the rules and aims are so simple that a seven-year-old can play, but the tricks are in the strategies employed to out-think your opponent, so it's fun for all ages and abilities. Basically, you have to surround the white discs and turn them black or vice versa. You never know who's going to win until the very end."

"Othello comes from that classic mould of abstract strategy games that offer limitless options and variable play. The game can be learned in 2 minutes but never be mastered. Highly appealing to those players that enjoy Chess, Checkers, Backgammon and other abstract games."

It is a classic abstract strategy game. It got inducted recently into the IAGO Hall of Fame. Considering how many knockoffs of it in the name of "Reversi" (different set of rules for the actual Reversi) are out there on the Web, that is a sign of something.

Othello was inducted into the Iago hall of fame? What did Desdemona think about that?

I had to look up the IAGO hall of fame just to make sure you weren't making a joke. The truth makes this comment that much greater.

Pictureka! Flipper Game

ALL THE FAMILY

The Independent Says:

"Another deceptively simple game that's great for all the family. It's surprisingly hard to spot the picture on the card and, no, you can't memorise the boards because the game allows for them to be swapped around and turned over at regular intervals. Updated this year to include a 3D penguin who throws the cards out for you to find."

BGG Says:

"This game is so awesome its unreviewed and un commented.

Blurb on the Back:

"Pictureka! Flipper is the instantly accessible, Penguin enabled, picture-hunting game, that pulls the whole family together with constantly engaging, edge-of-your-seat, frenetic fun. PICTUREKA! FLIPPER incorporates the same find it fast, find it first fun of PICTUREKA! Standing tall in the center of the table, the 3-D penguin frantically flips small game tiles from its rotating base in a circular pattern onto the game table. Players then race to try and find the wacky drawings on the tiles that match the “mission cards” before the penguin “quacks” and places more tiles on the table. Easy to learn and easy to play, PICTUREKA! FLIPPER offers zany fun for the entire family."

Snakes and Ladders barely passes as a game. The only lessons that can be learned from it are that you have to wait for your turn, and that random events determine the outcome of far too many games. I won't inflict this sort of rubbish on my two-year old; there are far better games from Haba that can teach either of those lessons and more besides.

No i love the old classics! They can be very beautiful boards... especially the older 'snakes and ladders'... hmmm... I would buy one right away if I could find one like this:

I can never really understand all the negativity that gets thrown at a lot of these old games?

Sure, I agree they don't really belong in a (Unresearched) 50 best games of all time list, "assuming" of course that you've got the "knowledge" of BGG behind you.

I know when I was about 7 I played Snakes and Ladders and while it wasn't exactly a ground breaking experience, there wasn't much else to compare it with? Monopoly? Scrabble? Othello? They all appear in my recollections of yesteryear and at the time served their purpose.

To say monopoly sucks etc. just seems pointless to me. I agree these games are dwarfed when trying to compare them to something like "Space Hulk" or "Agricola" but please try and think about these "Old" games in context.

Ahh, yes. This is a typical game of Snakes and Ladders I just can't understand. What is it with those snakes that makes them bad? If you step on their tail, you slide down them and end up at their head? I always feel I should land at the head, be devoured and end up at the tail, after I've passed through the digestive system. Possibly loosing a couple of turns in the meantime. But ending up at their head? They'd bite me and I'm dead.

"All in all, if you like Monopoly, you'll dig this, though it IS NOT MONOPOLY. If you want Monopoly, buy Monopoly; it's cheaper than this. If instead you'd like to manipulate it a little, maybe create some slightly different rules or themes, this kit makes it extremely easy to do. I'm working on my third kit, and designing it is as fun as playing it."

Monopoly Deal has earned a place in my games bag - it was very cheap, it's very short, and reasonably entertaining. But the original game? 2-3 hours of interminable tedium, the outcome of which is largely determined by luck, where the aim is to force other players to sit the game out by eliminating them.

This game is probably the single biggest reason why people in the UK *stop* playing games; because if it's the number 1 seller, it must be the best, right? But if this is as good as it gets, why play games at all?

Yeah - and with people who take their turns quickly.

And are wiling to negotiate.

I think what kills the fun of this game for many is that they play with people who don't understand that this is at least 50% a negotiation game! If you don't get into trades and deals, then it's mind-numbingly boring.

No its a real estate game with roll and move. We never trade. Also do not forget the Free parking rule. Thats important and almost always played.

I agree with the conclusion (that it's a good first game for wee ones), but think the assessment was poorly written. I don't think it helps at all with counting; you don't "have to bet on which two will win and lose" (we simply tried to guess which of the SIX would come in next); and it doesn't mention the chunky, easy-to-grasp shape of the snails that makes it appropriate for young hands.

It is really a very first game. Its so easy that 4 or 5 year olds might even get bored. Well it seems that seeing the other games "recommended" here are no brain burners either so it seems the list is for the mentally challenged or maybe "games for dumbsters".

I actually like this one. We simply wait till all but 1 snails have left the starting line, then we each put a guess on which snail will cross the line first. I'd agree that it does teach the concept of moving (not really counting), taking turns, etc. I still play this occasionally with my daughter, 5. It's not really a *game* in the sense of making meaningful decisions, but it's MUCH better than other "games" of this type like snakes/ladders, etc.

This used to happen to me all the time, until I came up with the perfect remedy...

Your remedy didn't work in our house so we went back to Trivial Pursuit.

I've only played once recently, can't remember the edition, but it favoured those who were luckiest. There was almost no knowledge involved.

Well people that want a remedy. Buy the game. I mean thrift it or borrow it.
Learn the cards by heart. You can easily learn 20 cards before you go to bed.

I'll guarentee you before a month has passed your friends won't play it or even suggest it when you are around.

It worked for me when I was thirteen

"Impression: Yuk.

I feel that this game is worse than the ordinary roll and move because of the dreaded memory mechanic. The memory games that I enjoy are ones that play fast and don’t require you to remember things for very long. This game relies so heavily on memory with players having to remember the locations of all the items over a long period of time. Although memory can be the great equalizer when playing games between adults and kids, there isn’t a need for that in this game because there is very little strategy. Your moves are all luck of the dice."

I am definitely in the minority in hating this game. So, I hope no one avoids it just because of me, but, good heavens, how I despise this game.

Roll the dice, count back and forth, back and forth to land on a tree, "let's see, maybe if I count this way.... no, let me try this way...." UG! Everyone's turn took forever.

Then, I head to the castle thinking I know where the Cinderella's slipper is and... "Oh, someone's changed the card!! I have to go back and start over, yay."

Whoops, sorry, I wasn't going to bad mouth this any more.....laugh

ah well, I guess we all have that one game that we can't take. This is absolutely the one for me.

"RISK:BALANCE OF POWER is a very good addition to the Risk series and one the designer, Rob Daviau, can be proud of. The two versions, various set-ups and different objectives mean a lot of replayability, and being for two players it could have considerably more appeal than other versions which only play at their best with four or five players. It deserves to be a success, and we think it will be."

Reportedly available in Canada, but Rob Daviau (designer) posted that he expected it to be released in several countries this year:

UK
Canada
Germany
Denmark
Norway
Mexico
Australia
Czech
Russia
Hungary
Switzerland
Malaysia

Reports are coming-in confirming this, but guess what? Not going to be released this year in the US... like Risk Express (even though I can go in a store and buy Scrabble Express, and Monopoly Express.... GRRRRR!!!).

Hasbro has some great game designers who seem to have some latitude on a ffew titles every year to make something interesting. The suits though, sstill don't get the gaming culture that is growing all the time ala the GGeek.

Finnish game of the year and plenty of other awards, but it tells more about the juries than the game. Then again, for general public this is a pretty good game. Everybody learns the rules in about five seconds and it's fun to play for a while. Anybody who has played an abstract game in the last decade or so will not miss anything by skipping this one...

"I can’t recommend this game. I really disliked it from the word go. I played several games and each one seemed more agonizing than the one before.
I am not a chess purist, but I found this game frustrating in the extreme even though I played and won a half-dozen times. I think the problem is that the cards just don’t allow any strategy at all to work. You can make moves that are completely nonsensical in real chess (based on hoping the other player can’t move the piece) and sometimes you can capture your opponents king (or lose your own) with ridiculous ease.
I don’t think the actual game does a good job of teaching chess since it allows those odd moves. I don’t think it is a good game in it’s own right either because it is too random. The most use I’ve gotten from it is letting my wife keep the cards in front of her as I’m trying to teach her chess so she can see how the pieces move."

"Backgammon is a very classic gambling game. If you approach it as a gambling game rather than a board game, I think you will get much more out of it. The key to the strategy element is the doubling cube. Without that, the strategy is very limited. Yes, there are options, considerations, risk/reward scenarios to run through your head. But, most of those are things that are not terribly complex and relatively easy for a player to get a handle on after several games. However, the doubling cube is something that takes a completely different level and type of strategy to master. This game is a staple, and one I will always pull out with certain friends, but it very rarely makes an appearance at game night."

Or alcohol.

Best game of Backgammon I ever played was when I was a college freshman "pre-functioning" before a school dance. My opponent was a friend's girlfriend, and we were so drunk/stoned that we couldn't remember which direction we were going or what color we were. We played for about three hours and missed the dance completely. The boyfriend didn't seem to mind at all.

Predictably, she later became student body president.

Predictably, I've rarely played since. Just can't hold my liquor that long anymore.

Not at all. This is a suicidal way to double.
You cannot offer the cube when you only have a small advantage. If you double with a small advantage, your opponent can take and cream you. In most situations, you need to be 2 to 1 to win the game in order to double (incorporating gammon chances). Owning the cube has value. You only need a 25% win chance (incorporating gammon chances) to take a double.

KrisVerbeeck wrote:

This makes sense if you are incorporating gammon chances. You may well be too strong to double if you gammon chances are high (and you are not playing with the Jacoby Rule or the cube is already at 2+).

I have stopped logging my plays against the GNU and 66-33 sounds about right for most situations (that's why I used the word edge over advantage; I should have explained it more)

There are also other reasons to offer the doubling cube...
Say you are in a match to 11 and you are trailing 10-6. You should offer the doubling cube right away.

Your opponent will accept it. And instead of a one point game you are playing a 2 point game.

Unique game that is truly cooperative. Not only is everybody working towards the same goal (as in most cooperative games), but everybody is working at the same time. This requires good communication, as players give and receive directions to try to build three towers. The timer is a little fast for my kids (about 45 seconds), but we substitute a longer timer for now.

Together with Orchard one of the best cooperative games for kids around.

Don't go looking for deep gameplay in both games. What you see here is kids working together. And both be happy when they succeed.

A great light game. Doesn't get much love here, but it's great for 2 to 4 players and each of those numbers make it a much different game. Not very many games can say that.

In saying that, I still want a game with a theme, so this one gets passed on a lot.

I highly recommend this sleeper-hit as a very fun twist on your traditional party trivia game."

An "Ass" is at best a donkey and at worst a butt. Putting aside the whole idea that "Some words shouldn't be said" (Which I also disagree with), I fail to see how this could possibly be one of them.

Emotional context is extremely important when it comes to insults and "offensive words." If my friend calls me a bastard and laughs, it's obvious that he means it ironically. If my friend calls me a bastard and glares, it's obvious that he's angry at me (A simplification, of course, but you get the idea). It isn't what you say, it's how you say it. I knew that by the age of seven, it's not a very difficult concept.

Over here the exact same term would 99% of the time be pronounced 'Smart Arse' even though the title says "Ass".

I guess it's just one of those sayings that's been run through a Chinese Whispers machine and hence the change in phrase over the other side of the pond. (Unless it's just me?)

I'm not convinced it would be correct for a child of 7 to be using the term Arse?

We shorten two player by removing the 1-3 tiles ahead of time. This helps, but there's still a great deal of passing. I rate this game a 6 with 2-3 players. With four players, it can be a seven.

To my wife, it really works for her. Nice tactile components, actual manipulation of the game board, and a puzzle-like component. It's here 10."

"Having played a few games of PXC:TBG, I've found it enjoyable enough, but not much of a challenge. A group of us were playing this at the CubeFest 06 event a few weeks ago, and had a fine old time mocking each other's lack of knowledge after a pint or two, but now the game feels a little limited as thanks to a few regular plays, especialy with bigger groups, we've now sped through most of the questions - hopefully Mind Candy will see fit to produce expansion question packs with some tougher challenges; perhaps even a set of simpler questions for a younger playing group? It certainly screams "after dinner game", as you can get one finished in well under an hour (even with 4 people playing), but for the first attempt at making a board game, Mind Candy have done pretty well."

It is possible to find someone, somewhere here on BGG, who has said nice things about almost all the games on the Independent's list. But then, there are people who continue to say nice things about Blair and Brown. The majority consensus is that the vast majority aren't worth the time it takes to get them down off the shelves, and would provide more satisfaction if they were used as cavity wall insulation.

I think most of y'all are overthinking this, honestly. It's not "THE" all-time, high-profile, expert's-opinion, Top 50. It's one list, from one lady (columnist, rather than reporter, I'd say -- somewhat different animal), expressing her opinion. And it's obviously aimed at a family audience.

It's an opinion. Like all those critic's top 10 lists, only she's presumably not passing herself off as an "expert", just a person who managed to find 50 games she thinks are worth having for certain segments of the population (under-eights, etc.) Some (old favourites) are clearly there for nostalgia value alone. This ain't the Golden Geek or the SdJ, and doesn't pretend to be, as far as I can see. I will agree there are some surprising omissions -- someone needs to invite her to a boardgame night and hit her with the standard Gateway list.

Hello Linda.

I apologise if this is patronising and you already know, but in the UK, The Independent is a well respected national newspaper. So it is read by a lot of people who will think it is "THE" all-time, high-profile, expert's-opinion, Top 50. Between you and me, we do know what's good and bad about the list. Most readers, especially of the paper edition, will have no idea nd will take it as gospel. Yes, really. In the UK, most folk only Monopoly, Scrabble and Cluedo and have absolutely no other terms of reference.

That's why we're pissed off. After the Essen article, it's a let-down.

Disappointing overall, but what would you expect?

To be fair, I've seen lists like this in the past many times and they do seem to be gradually getting better - Haba games, better party ones, decent abstracts and a mention of Carc and (the wrong) TtR. You're always going to get Chess, Snakes and Ladders etc on a list like this in any newspaper. It could be worse - and it usually is!

If he'd put just three or four of better, perhaps more themed games in this then we could have had no complaints...you have to be realistic about who will read any national newspaper and what sort of stuff they expect to find.

He might have drawn attention to something like Pompeii, Escape Atlantis, Forbidden Island or Memoir in here. Or perhaps something easy and quick like No Thanks, but without being delusional about the way the world is, you're never going to find Caylus, Struggle of Empires or Through the Ages in a list like that.
