Ok, so we've been playing Hive every time we go out to Sushi and I don't know if I can play it anymore. Don't get me wrong, it's a great game and I love it, but we've played the living tar out of it and we need something new. Here are the parameters for what makes a good restaurant game, feel free to add any games you think we might enjoy.

Scores are on a 1-5 scale with 5 being the highest.

Durability: Can be easily cleaned and holds up to wear and tear
Portability: Can fit in a pocket or purse
Real Estate: Doesn't take up too much room on the table, even after the food is served.
Time: Can be played in less than 15 minutes
Disturbance: Doesn't attract too much attention from the other customers (e.g. No Ca$h N Gun$ at Chili's)
Fun factor: Is this game actually fun?

This is similar to Bananagrams, but the actual rules are quite different. You can actually play Bananagrams with Snatch, or Snatch with Bananagrams. (They both are both also easily played with pilfered Scrabble tiles... just throw 'em in a ziplock.)

Durability: 5 Plastic pieces in a plastic tube. Rules so simple you'll never forget, so you can spill salsa on them.
Portability: 4 The tube is a cool way to store the game, but it might be a bit long for your wife's purse, depending on how big it is.
Real Estate: 3.5 Better than Bananagrams, but you still have to have room to build your words, plus the "tile pile", though you can also pull blindly out of the tube instead of a pile.
Time: 4 We usually finish before the food arrives..
Disturbance: 5 Letter tiles aren't that exciting. You probably won't get too many stares.
Fun factor: 5 if you like word games.

An excellent candidate as a restaurant game for all the reasons that Hive is, but even more portable. Also, it has pirates and monkeys and aliens and zombies and ninjas, so how can you go wrong?

Durability: 5 - square bakelite tiles, nice size
Portability: 5 - box only somewhat larger than a deck of cards
Real Estate: 4 - generally well contained
Time: 4 - right about ten or 15 minutes for a game
Disturbance: 4 - unusual looking but not bizarre or conspicuous
Fun factor: 3 - it took us a few plays to appreciate, but we really like it now

This is my wife's and my favorite restaurant table game, and when in its bag it fits in my pants pocket.

I think this is one of the best 2-person portable abstract games. The knock on this game at BGG is that it is "solved," but in my opinion it won't be solved by most mortal gamers.

I just remembered a game we used to play at Olive Garden: Cheese Chicken

You could play with just two people, but it works best with larger groups. I suppose you could play when dining alone for maximum awkwardness.

The "game" works like this: In restaurants like Olive Garden or Macaroni Grill where the server offers you Parmesan cheese (or other cheese or even pepper) they will generally continue to serve it until you let them know to stop. On each player's turn they see how long they can wait before they tell the server to stop. As the pile of tasty cheese grows, the awkwardness grows as well. Players can even use a stop watch to keep score. The player who holds out the longest before saying "stop," wins. The awkwardness can be increased further by pretending to suddenly notice that the server has been piling on mounds of cheese and then act upset that this absurdity was allowed to happen. Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee........

Ignore the actual game linked here. The game I have to share is one I created, I suppose.

Background:
My wife and I both are compulsive people watchers. In college we started meeting for lunch between our classes and would sit in the student union playing this.

Rules:
1) On person is "it."
2) A random stranger walks by.
3) The "it" person, after watching the stranger says aloud either, "yes," or "no."
4) The opponent either agrees or disagrees with the assessment.
5) Discussion follows as necessary until both players agree on either yes or no.
6) The game is played until a pre-determined number of agreements between the players occur without the need for discussion (we'd usually play until we had to go to class, but sometimes we'd place an arbitrary limit on it, such as fifteen agreements.)

So strategically, your goal is to predict and guess who your opponent will say yes to, and who they will say no to. This is not a sexual thing, btw, just to clarify. Except that rarely, and rather hysterically, it sometimes can be. And of course, that's what you're trying to figure out.

Winning: we always knew who won, the same way we knew that the other was right or wrong when they said yes or no. You could just as easily keep track of yes's and no's and create some arbitrary criteria. Often after a certain number of agreements occurs, there is a chance to switch the "it" person, and let them try, and you could also keep track of that, to declare a winner. But you don't really play this game to win, if that makes sense.

That's it. I know it sounds rather vague, but we always enjoyed the hell out of it, and sometimes still play it (airports, by the way, are the BEST.)

Durability: 5
Portability: 5

I personally prefer Ultimate Mastermind. But the more portable version on Mastermind is much better for traveling.

Durability: 4 - Short of spilling your drink in it you should be fine.
Portability: 5 - Little compartments to hold all your bits
Real Estate: 5 - Definatly a small foot print.
Time: 4 - definatly under 15 min a round, but how many rounds do you wanna play?
Disturbance: 4 - very discreet as far as games go.
Fun factor: 3 - Definatly not a "fun" game. But if your looking for a good puzzle your in luck

I'm going to go old school, and recommend you get yourselves a set of bones. One of the best domino games I've ever come across is called threes and fives. It gets the brain going quite well.

Durability: 5 I've spilt beer all over my set, several times, (at a UK pub) and they are still as good as new.

Portability: 5 If you can find a small set they don't take up much room.

Real Estate: 3-5 Again, if you can get a small set they don't take up too much table space.

Time:5 Depends on the game, but 3s & 5s wouldn't go past the 20 minute mark.

Disturbance: 5 Unless you like rowdy domino games I guess.

Fun factor: 5+ One of the things I love about dominoes is the fact there are sooooo many different games you can play with them. In fact, finding new games can be part of the fun.

Pizza Wars: a wargame in which you maneuver your armies (ingredients) to conquer other territories (slices), over an actual pizza.

Durability: 1 – but then you are supposed not to leave leftovers.
Portability: 3 – it does not fit a purse, but maybe you can get a doggie bag.
Real Estate: 5 – does not take up food room, the thing IS the food.
Time: 3 – properly played takes more than 15 minutes, but you usually play faster not to eat it cold.
Disturbance: 5 – people won't even notice you're playing. Well, maybe your mom could, and utter "stop playing with your food!"
Fun Factor: 4 – well, I had fun in writing this entry...
