Seriously though, I have been drawn in, resisted, investigated, checked reviews, links, comments and used a bit of common sense and realised that some of these games are not for our collection.

Then there are others that definitely belong in our collection - those I just need to convince my wife we need.

Finally there are those where I really don't know one way or the other, so I have gathered all the information I could find and hope to be able to make an informed decision at some point.

Our family:

Me - enjoys quick card games like Innovation, more meaty games like Puerto Rico and Troyes or long games like Merchant of Venus and Yedo
Wife - enjoys Innovation, Jet Set and Epic Resort
Step-son - age 15 - enjoys King of Tokyo, Saboteur and The World Cup Game
Step-daughter - age 13 - enjoys Dixit, Pickomino and Saboteur

NB: This process was previously split into 3 parts, but has now been consolidated here from Interesting games that I still need to research... and I need to convince my Wife....

Attraction: City building theme.

Comments: Interesting write-up but very little information.

Game is now ready for release at Essen 2013 and looks great in terms of graphics. Eager to read more on the game itself. It does seem at first glance similar to other economic, engine building games though I am most likely wrong.

I finished reading the rules this evening and am sad to say there was nothing that moved me to place an order for the game. In fact I am striking it off the list. I will commend them for making a great offer on shipping though.

The game seems to be just another worker placement game with a different setting and I just could not get excited about it.

Pros: Graphics. Theme.
Cons: Just another worker placement game.

Comments: Deck building with a purpose...Powerful Mageknights battle for supremacy of the lands. I am not normally a fantasy guy, but the street cred of the designer and the awesome artwork makes it look interesting.

I look forward to reading reviews later on.

Having read a few reviews, I have been very taken with this game, even at the expense of comments on the quality of the components. In fact I have seemingly talked so much about it that my wife decided to give me a gift certificate for one copy of the game.

Interesting theme and mechanics. I look forward to seeing it develop.

Now I have had a peek at the German rules. Perhaps my rusty German is to blame, but I am not loving it. The game mechanics seemed simple. Hopefully the English rules will be available soon (I know people are working on it) and maybe it will change my view on the game.

Comments: Scratch that pirate itch.

I have been reading reviews and comments - perhaps it is not the game for us - I will need to re-consider before shelling out on the game, but currently leaning towards a thumbsdown - hopefully more reviews will allow me to make an informed decision.

Recent comments sway me towards the negative. I get the feeling the 2 player game is lacking something in comparison with the full ensemble. I have a feeling how we will play the game, in which case we have other options.

Update: I have a new gaming group and I think this might be right up our alley in that sense. Might even work with the missus - at least we will give it a try.

Pros: Great graphics, great theme, short play time (apr. 45/ player).
Cons: Gut feeling saying it might not be for us...

Attraction: Worker placement charm...

Comments: Well, it is the usual worker placement game it seems. What intrigued me was that there was more to it than just plant and harvest, feed and breed.

Plus, the 1st edition seems to be well regarded. Now, whether we need another worker placement game about farming is another matter.

Watching the RRT (link below) I was not wowed. It did not stand out, nor did it bomb. They are working on a 2 player variant, interesting to see where that leads, in order to tighten up the end-game at that count.

The 2 variants for 2 player games look interesting and the group pledge I was on for Denmark makes it very cheap. That said, I need to downsize and this one doesn't make it.

There is still very little information the game aside from the rules. Reading them and the one review has convinced me that it is not a game for me. Since it was first added to this list I think the setting and play time has been overtaken by Mage Knight Board Game and that is a game rarely played.

Comments: Tile-laying game featuring monsters. Players place tiles to build their own or opponents monsters. Make them big, but not too big or they will never be finished.

Perhaps too simple? Or one to play with the kids.

I have watched the demo from Essen and it is some boast, implied that of all his games Dominion is Donald X. Vaccarino's 2nd best game...

The game is very simple. It gas cute artwork. A killer is the fact you can place tiles on other players monsters/ minions. The kids don't like the destructive aspect of games like that. Sure, we could houserule it out, but that would take a lot of the fun out of it I think.

Attraction: Controlling ant colonies...

Comments: Players control ant colonies, trying to get ready for the coming winter. Explore, harvest, fight, dominate the world. A civilization game in a very different format.

Very little information, but the theme is certainly original, even if the mechanics may not be. The prototype shots do look very busy, so it will be interesting to see the final artwork.

Reading the session report and considering the theme, I am very interested in this game - I hope it does well.

We played it once online and though we enjoyed it we didn't feel the need to explore it further for now.

Pros: Theme.

Attraction: Templars theme.

Comments: I have a fascination with the Templars. In high-school I wrote a big history report on them. It is still early days, so I am looking forward to reading more about the game. Area movement and route building, hopefully the theme comes across.

Watched the video preview and seems to be very thematic but tells very little about the actual gameplay. My interest is dropping, if only because I have a hard time figuring out what the game wants to be and at what player count it will be best.

I am not sure what I expected. It turns out after reading the rules and comments from geekbuddies that it is not something I find enticing. Players play Knights to get relics and transport them to safe places across Europe when the roof comes in on the Templars.

Pros: Theme.
Cons: 2 player goodness?

Attraction: Civilization theme.

Comments: I had the opportunity to playtest this game but due to personal issues I never had the time to play it. Still, it goes to show how interested I am in the game and based on my reading of the rules, I have high hopes for it.

Reading the description makes it sound like Sid Meier's Civilization and though it has combat it seems to be about more than just that and in a way which does not involve one player pounding another.

I can't wait to see more as we get closer to release.

Have now read the final rules and still interested in the game. I am a little unsure about the 2 player game because it might run the risk of falling into predictable patterns though that would be our group-think rather than the game itself. That said, the rules do state that the 2 player game is more fierce - there will always be 1 winner and 1 loser in terms of events.

I like the ideas presented in the game and how they have mixed them together. Looking forward to seeing the game in action and reading a few reviews.

This game has been sitting on this list for a long time now. Comments have come and gone and I haven't felt the urge to explore the game further. There are voices for and against the 2 player game, as to be expected.

I am thinking the military aspect of the game would actually work to our favour, however, the game seems competitive and fierce. Plus, we are cutting back on those longer games...

Pros: Civilization card game.
Cons: 2 player goodness?

Attraction: Quick card game with theme.

Comments: I know this is an "old" game, but I stumbled upon it again today and decided to take a closer look. We enjoy Dominion, but rejected Kingdom Builder. A geek buddy said that if we enjoyed those games, he would recommend it... otherise not... not sure what to think now.

Ok, so the review on the 2 player game kills it for us.

I have way to many games, but I keep thinking about this game more often than not (maybe because I am still subscribed to the game page here on BGG).

Anyway, when a brand-new copy showed up locally I had to have it, just to get it off my mind - 2 player be damned.

Pros: Quick card game with variability.
Cons: We have a lot of card games.

Attraction: Post-Apocalyptic strategy game!

Comments: Tile-placement, hand-management, short playing time, great with 2 players!

Yet, there is something in my gut that tells me we will not get many plays out of it... and I was right. I showed my wife the Castelli review and she seemed very quiet. She then said there was too much to keep track of in her head to play well enough - and gave it a no, but thanks.

Pros: Cool theme, great execution.

Attraction: Theme.

Comments: Players control a scientist in the 17th century. Use your time to make discoveries and become famous in order to become the first president of the Royal Society.

I have read the rules twice now and must say that this is a very interesting game. Based on that and the theme I will already place it on my must-buy list.

Still waiting for the game to arrive in shops here in Europe...

I have seen the game a few places now at decent, though high-end prices. Reviews and comments are beginning to gnaw at my confidence in the game as a fit for us. Solely on theme I would get it. 2 player opinion is divided (though a small sample) and I have my doubts to the number of plays we might get from it.

Pros: Theme.
Cons: 2 player goodness? Long-term value?

Attraction: Economic game set in Japan.

Comments: Interesting sounding economic game set in Japan. I have nod had a great interest in the designers previous efforts, Madeira and Panamax, though some have praise for the former and the latter intrigues me, though not as a 2 player game.

I will keep an eye on this one.

The ratings are good, the reviews are good. I just don't feel for the theme and is lukewarm about the whole points-conversion thing.
