Seriously though, I have been drawn in, resisted, investigated, checked reviews, links, comments and used a bit of common sense and realised that some of these games are not for our collection.

Then there are others that definitely belong in our collection - those I just need to convince my wife we need.

Finally there are those where I really don't know one way or the other, so I have gathered all the information I could find and hope to be able to make an informed decision at some point.

Our family:

Me - enjoys quick card games like Innovation, more meaty games like Puerto Rico and Troyes or long games like Merchant of Venus and Yedo
Wife - enjoys Innovation, Jet Set and Epic Resort
Step-son - age 15 - enjoys King of Tokyo, Saboteur and The World Cup Game
Step-daughter - age 13 - enjoys Dixit, Pickomino and Saboteur

NB: This process was previously split into 3 parts, but has now been consolidated here from Interesting games that I still need to research... and I need to convince my Wife....

Not: Small World

Attraction: Civilization game in 90 minutes.

Comments: The box says 3--5 players, but the official 2 player variant is here already, making this game an interesting option for us. Develop your people, make discoveries, conquer the world or pray to the gods. It is all possible in Olympos.

Recently sat down and read the rules. Not wowed by a long shot. It felt somewhat similar to how I felt about Small World, rampaging across the board. I read comments on how the different technologies could work together and feel giddy, because it just sounds cool, but that is just one aspect. The rest of the game feels like a rush to acquire resources, save enough time to spend them and move on.

Perhaps we are not the target group here, the conflict aspect for sure is off-putting, even if the nature of it perhaps is different and you give and take instead of pulling down. Still, based on the rules (and the reviews) I will give this a miss.

Pros: Technology aspect.
Cons: Conflict, give-and-take aspect and overall feel.

Attraction: Uwe Rosenberg game.

Comments: Head of a monastery, Le Havre like but even better, rondel mechanic for resources - it all sounds good!

I really like the sound of this one and I am almost tempted to put it on auto-buy. Who am I kidding - info so far looks great and this is an auto-buy for us.

On second thought, reading the rules, the game does very little for me and we have come to realize that games like At the Gates of Loyang and Le Havre are just not for us. We will take a pass on this one.

Having read Jesse's review and watched the walkthrough I am more upbeat about this release. It seems to hit a lot of the right buttons for me - but, I can also see myself not playing this game because it is just not the kind of game we enjoy right now.

When/ if we return to this kind of games along the lines, then I will come back to this one.

Geekbuddy LOVE for this game is overwhelming, so I am putting it back on the list. The gameplay seems to be very different from what I initially expected. I am still eager to hear more and to get a feel for the play time. If it can be played in 90 minutes of less...

Pros: Everything available so far!
Cons: Just not our fancy at the moment.

Attraction: Theme.

Comments: Research for the BGG contest lead me to the game and I was intrigued.

It has a great theme and seems to reward continued plays. It features a great deal of direct interaction, which is not always a plus. The theme though is really enticing.

The base game is for 2 players only, expansions add extra players.

Furthermore, the game is only available in the US, so it will be expensive importing it...

I am not entirely convinced we will enjoy it, in fact I am leaning towards not. However, given I found a copy in Germany and a very good deal, I took a gamble and bought it.

Pros: Theme.
Cons: Direct interaction.

Attraction: Card management game with Roman theme.

Comments: Very little information available, but looks like a quick-playing card game with a bit of a twist. Will you, as part of the rebel army fighting the Romans do your best to beat them - or will you through intrigue join them.

I have now read the rules 3 times and while I do feel a slight interest in the game, it is not by a long stretch enough to make me want to pursue it. The game seems abstract by nature, though the theme is felt throughout.

I’ve never really had a bad experience with this game but, after some plays, you will notice a need to make some judgement calls and adjustments to keep the game in balance from time to time. Attraction: Civ-lite game allowing you to join in the epic struggle between Athens and Sparta.

Comments: This looks like a great 2 player civilization game. Designed for just 2 players, this could be a huge hit in our house. Previously print and play, now picked up by Asylum Games (Board Games), very firmly on my radar and almost straight to my buy list.

I have read the rules, which leaves me less enthusiastic about the game. It might be the translation, which made for a somewhat cumbersome English, but the game mechanics too did not bowl me over.

Still, I will wait and see for more info because the genre intrigues me.

Ok, so the designer chimed in and stated it is not a wargame as such. That is enough for me to move ahead. I just showed the video to my wife and she was interested in trying it out, so we will take a chance on this.

Pros: Civ-lite game designed for 2. Playable in less than 3 hours.

Attraction: Roman name.

Comments: So, we are engineers working together to build a magnificent city and it sounds like we have been here before in some form or other.

Now, where it becomes interesting is that your workers gain experience and thus become better at whatever job they do. The downside to this is that at some point they decide to retire, which will bring you victory points at the end of the game but you also have to keep them in retirement by paying them a pension.

It sounds similar in some ways to the aging mechanism in Village and I am eager to see how it works in practice here.

So, my initial thought was ok, interesting, then came the Spielwarenmesse video and it was meh... then came the Progress: Evolution of Technology Kickstarter and a look at the Rahdo video (game available as add-on.

His enthusiasm (while always great) was over the moon, so I decided to get them both.

Attraction: Different theme!

Comments: A very tight economic game set in the world of fashion.

Read the rules now and very discouraged. Theme seems to be well-integrated, but the game comes off very dry and very mathematical to me. It reminds me a little of Vinhos in that there are soo many aspects to juggle while trying to come out on top - thematic perhaps - but no fun for me.

Attraction: Great cover and situated in Italy!

Comments: Reading the rules I find nothing new, innovative or interesting. It has a great cover, but there is nothing else that entices me, nothing to make me WANT to play it.

I will give this one a miss.

Attraction: Name and theme.

Comments: I was lured in by the name and fascinated by the theme and subject matter at hand. You build a civilization based on the technologies you research and accomplish. The sole focus is to move up the technology tree, from ancient times to todays modern world.

Sounds like a fun, fast-paced card game. Execution is vital as it is a card game and the length of play listed (90 minutes) does much to dampen my enthusiasm. Hopefully those fears will be put to rest once we get closer to publication.

Kickstarted based on theme and the enthusiasm of Rahdo.

Pros: Theme.
Cons: Length.

Attraction: Historical setting.

Comments: A story of the promised lands, a battle between Hebrews and Heathen. Co-op and competitively, it sounds promising, though as always I am eager to learn more, especially about the 2 player aspect.

Thought the game was originally conceived as a 2 player game and turned into a 4 player game - and that does sound promising - I have decided the warfare aspect and the premise of the game itself, playing different states, is not something my wife would enjoy. Personally I was intrigued by the nation building aspect of it as I read the idea of farmers, merchants etc. though my feeling is it is more about getting what you want through warfare.

I might likely be proven wrong and aside from the videos by the designers there is very little information. Today I say no.

Pros: Historical setting.

Attraction: RPG playable with the kids!

Comments: Fantasy adventure that we might enjoy with the kids. It also seems it to be less fiddly than Return of the Heroes, though it can be a bit dry (Comment).

Cons: Will we get to play it?

Comments: It seems everybody is getting excited about this game as it seems to mark a return for Reiner Knizia to heavier games.

We have struggled a bit with his games as they have often been better with more than 2 and sometimes a bit abstract.

Mixed comments from geekbuddies on this one. Reading the rules did not get me excited about it either. Removing it from my list.

Attraction: Name and cover.

Comments: Card game set in ancient Roman times...

Nothing known about the game except cover and cardgame. Will be following this based on theme and name alone.

Early geekbuddy reports suggest run and don't look back. In a time when I have now been burned by theme alone, I will let this one go.

Pros: Theme.

Attraction: Theme!

Comments: Well, theme is the driving force behind this one. We have enjoyed playing CV, even with the kids, which shares a similar theme though with very different mechanics.

I like the look of the game and I think, as a game, it could work well for us and our regular gaming partners.

That said, I am on the fence about whether that is enough to buy it.

Watched the full Rahdo treatment, pondered it a few days and thought this was something we should at least try. It seems to give the same story-telling aspects of CV but a bigger hand in telling it.

Pros: Theme and story-telling.

Attraction: Puzzle aspect.

Comments: I am not sure I am phrasing the attraction properly. My wife enjoys those gem games where you have to match up the gems in long strings and clear them - scoring points in the process. I imagine this is along those lines - only with real people.

This is a tough one, my wife found the videos interesting, I found them not fun... and then I saw it on sale and thought it might be worth a gamble. I am very confident my wife will love it, which in turn will probably allow it to grow on me...

Pros: Different theme, family fun.
Cons: Pricey for chips...
