Seriously though, I have been drawn in, resisted, investigated, checked reviews, links, comments and used a bit of common sense and realised that some of these games are not for our collection.

Then there are others that definitely belong in our collection - those I just need to convince my wife we need.

Finally there are those where I really don't know one way or the other, so I have gathered all the information I could find and hope to be able to make an informed decision at some point.

Our family:

Me - enjoys quick card games like Innovation, more meaty games like Puerto Rico and Troyes or long games like Merchant of Venus and Yedo
Wife - enjoys Innovation, Jet Set and Epic Resort
Step-son - age 14 - enjoys King of Tokyo, Saboteur and The World Cup Game
Step-daughter - age 12 - enjoys Dixit, Pickomino and Saboteur

NB: This process was previously split into 3 parts, but has now been consolidated here from Interesting games that I still need to research... and I need to convince my Wife....

Comments: Players prepare for the big ball, managing employees and their own affairs. Deck-building is all the vogue right now and in this game too.

Standard worker placement Euro? Looking forward to more information.

Read the rules and nothing stands out aside from the theme. So, not worker placement as such, instead it uses the deck building aspect. That said it just seems like something we have seen before, just dressed up in new clothes...

Attraction: THEME!

Comments: Civilization game playable in 90 minutes. Players build their empire and strive to take over the world in meager sailboats and canoes.

There seems to be ongoing playtesting going on in the forum, so we can listen in.

The game seems to have changed significantly. A European publisher is interested and work has been progressing on that front for an extended period of time. That is the good news.

The bad news is (for us and the game) that the designer has gone back to school (good for him) and that has put the design on the back-burner, where it seems to be stuck at the moment.

The designer seems very enthused about the new direction of the game so that is a plus - hopefully we all get to see it at some point.

Comments: I like the ancient theme and this one looks solid. A number of different mechanics seem to make for an interesting game.

Now that I have read the rules I am very intrigued by the ideas of the game. Players compete, but also by doing so, help each other, as goods traded at either end of the trade route can then be used by the other player to further their own ends.

I will have to see if I can get a copy...

I have been following this game for a while, the graphics are wonderful to my eyes and the game seems to be right up our alley. Given that the game will also ship from within the EU from the Kickstarter I owe it to Shem to back it.

Attraction: Cool graphics and interesting theme!

Comments: Economical tactical game where you are the manager of your own band and compete with other managers for fame and money. 5 different music styles, tend to the togetherness of your band and even sabotage other bands.

Comments on the game page indicate it may be very chaotic, but the designer is aware there could be issues with high interaction (screwage) and has given suggestions to this effect in article 5.

Pros: Excellent demo by the designer and great support on the forum.

Attraction: Sid Meier's Civilization!

Comments: Another conversion of the famous PC game. It looks awesome from the pictures and info released. Hopefully it can live up to the hype.

I am seriously in doubt about this game. The videos look great, the idea about the game entice me, the whole deal makes it look like something I want to sink my teeth into.

Then there are voices saying it is too restrictive - certain nations play the same way, multiple paths are not really so, they are restricted from early on. Still, I want to at least try the game, play it, but I cannot right now sanction a game of such conflicting emotions at this price...

I have had issues with the way military/ combat was handled based on reviews/ videos - those have been dispelled.

On a personal level I think we are not hooked on direct conflict. I think the game will lack (as mentioned in the comments) a very important dimension if we try to play without military conflict.

Pros: Everything!
Cons: How good will it be - and will it be great with 2?

Comments: Can you say THEME!!!

I know I will probably never play this game, but just reading the description makes my mouth water. Taking on the role of Chief of one of the many gangs profitting from the proscriptions during the terror reign of Sulla in 82 BC following the civil war.

Ok, coming to my senses, I will strike it off the list, but if I ever find the group for it I will be all over it.

I have read the rules and seen the cards, read the reviews and find it very interesting - but, the game is full of text, none of which my step-kids would be able to understand - at least not yet.

Attraction: The PC Game connection!

Comments: eXplore, eXpand, eXploit and eXterminate - Space Empires on the board, rich in theme, easy to get into, hard to master. One of those PC games I've always wanted to play and master, but never had the patience to sit down and learn.

I fear the same may hold true for the board game version. The board looks dull, but reading some of the comments of the designer gets my blood flowing... there is still hope.

The session reports were very interesting to read, but having read the rules I am fairly certain this is a game - albeit great - that will not work for us. The space theme just doesn't work for us. Give me ancient history any day and I will jump right in...

... ok, so we might not go for space, but we could go for a great game and the buzz around this one suggest the latter.

Attraction: 18xx in space?!?

Comments: Players run fledgling corporations trying to make it big in the Universe. Described as 18xx in space and co-designed by one of our favourite designers it looks interesting - despite the sci-fi theme.

Reading the "preview" and the session report and I am lukewarm on this one now. It looks like an interesting game, just not our type.

Pros: 18xx in space.
Cons: Sci-fi theme.

Price: $59.99

Attraction: City building theme.

Comments: From Ted Alspach of AoS fame comes a city building game. Basically a tile-laying game where you place hex tiles and strive to make your borough the best in town.

Read the rules and cannot see the magic or anything that makes it stand out compared with other games in our collection.

That should probably have read "Skimmed the rules...". Now that I have read the rules properly (inspired by comments on the geek) I have put this up into serious consideration.

Watching the Spiel'12 demo and the game is getting hotter by the minute. Love the statement that 2 player games can be played in less than 30 minutes by players familiar with the game.

Showed my wife the demo and she said 2 minutes in to get it... a Spiel copy has turned up on the local trade market, so I snapped it up.

Pros: City building with many strategies.

Attraction: City building theme.

Comments: Build a city and score at the right time. Use role cards to gain special abilities for the round. Score benchmarks through the use of these roles. Most benchmarks win.

There are a lot of city building type games coming out within the next 6 months. It is difficult to pick between them, even if they are different in mechanics and execution. I don't think I need to get them all, though you never know.

I read the rules and feel confident this is not a game for us.

Attraction: The NAME!

Comments: Take a trip back to the 1950's and enjoy the cocktail culture? I have no idea what this game is about but the name is intriguing and I want to know more.

Fantastic artwork, though still unsure if I will back it. Aside from the artwork I am not super psyched about the game. It seems interesting enough, but only so...

So, ultimately I decided against backing it. My wife watched the RRT video with me and was positive but the gameplay itself did not hook me. That and the high $-cost made it an expensive purchase (though thumbsup for shipping from the EU).

In a different time and place I probably would have gone for it because of the theme and artwork.

Attraction: Pandas...

Comments: Growing bamboo to feed a big Panda... this is new - and yet another worker placement game. Will be interesting to see if there is anything new in this one other than the theme.

I have read the rules now and the game is moving up on my wishlist. It seems a bit light but with a theme that seems well incorporated with the mechanics. I am moving this one up, though pricing will be a consideration.

Pros: Cool theme and Ghost Stories designer
Cons: Yet another worker placement game?

Attraction: Geekbuddy buzz.

Comments: A game that is raved about for the beauty of it and one that geekbuddies and gamers alike seem to praise. Playable in under an hour, though abstract, and a great medium game.

It was reprinted in a French/ German version last year and is language independent.

Well, as Kingdom Builder proved, my wife and I can do abstracts.

Pros: 2 player goodness, great looking.

Attraction: The name of the game caught my eye.

Comments: A dice and card game about collecting gemstones in Tanzania. I find the photos available intriguing so I am looking forward to seeing more of the game as we move forward.

According to the designer it is currently part of a design contest so I imagine it will take a while before that happens.

To be released in October. Price seems very competitive and skimming the rules it seems like a fun game. Unfortunately getting the game onto my table will prove too much for the time beeing.

Will keep an eye on it if it manages to hit European retail.

Possible to get alongside Shipwrights of the North Sea in the Kickstarter.

Attraction: Donald X. Vaccarino w/ time-travel theme.

Comments: We enjoy Dominion, though probably more with more players and Kingdom Builder, so it warrants a look whenever something pops up from Donald X. Vaccarino.

I am not sure how to describe the game but it plays quick and sounds interesting. Comments in various threads are encouraging, including this one.

St0ckpile wrote:
This game is so so good. Easily one of the best games of 2014. I could see it outranking Dominion if it gets the production and reception it deserves.

I am really on the fence on this one. Part of me wants to kick it to the curve, given its mediocre components and so-so reviews/ comments. On the other hand I really want it to work.

Geekbuddies are mainly lukewarm at best about the game and given its price point in Denmark, I will most likely not pick it up.

I saw this for sale locally and passed on it. Getting a meh feeling on this one, so going to strike it off the list.
