Seriously though, I have been drawn in, resisted, investigated, checked reviews, links, comments and used a bit of common sense and realised that some of these games are not for our collection.

Then there are others that definitely belong in our collection - those I just need to convince my wife we need.

Finally there are those where I really don't know one way or the other, so I have gathered all the information I could find and hope to be able to make an informed decision at some point.

Our family:

Me - enjoys quick card games like Innovation, more meaty games like Puerto Rico and Troyes or long games like Merchant of Venus and Yedo
Wife - enjoys Innovation, Jet Set and Epic Resort
Step-son - age 14 - enjoys King of Tokyo, Saboteur and The World Cup Game
Step-daughter - age 12 - enjoys Dixit, Pickomino and Saboteur

NB: This process was previously split into 3 parts, but has now been consolidated here from Interesting games that I still need to research... and I need to convince my Wife....

Attraction: Rollercoaster theme.

Comments: Interesting theme with some cool mechanics. Build the coolest ride.

On your turn you play a card from your hand in order to build your ride. The faster you do so, the more pressure you put on the other players as the time-limit is influenced by other players.

I think this time aspect would kill it for us. The kids would stress out over it. Off the list for now.

Pros: Theme.
Cons: Time pressure.

Verdict: thumbsdown - wouldn't work as family game for us.

I am very interested in this game. It seems to add something different to the mix. It plays well with 2 players and each game feels different. In fact, were it not for 3 other 18xx titles on my shelf I would be all over this one.

Attraction: 18xx game that works for 2 players.

Comments: Same as above... then again, we already have 3 games in the genre that does the same. Early reports are good, the game is great to look at, though some report it actually hinders the gameplay.

Part of the attraction is the great looking graphics and the limited release, which is not always a sign of a game being something we will play.

I would be more inclined to consider this for our collection if we were more ardent 18xx players, but with 3 games played twice in total, I will give this a miss.

Hot: Campaign Manager 2008 & Twilight Struggle
Not:

Attraction: Interesting theme and in the vein of Twilight Struggle

Comments: A card driven game simulating the end of the Cold War incorporating political, social and economical aspects.

We don't play Twilight Struggle enough as it is, but perhaps this game will fill the same slot and get table time. I think this period might be more familiar and interesting to us as individuals as we lived through it. This is the overpowering reason why I have not discarded it yet, because based on our track record, it would never get played.

I have struck this off the list, because we NEVER play Twilight Struggle and therefore do not need another, similar game. If we ever get on to that game, I might look this one up.

Well, what do you know. My wife and I played a game of Twilight Struggle over the weekend and enjoyed it. We have talked about getting I Mille because the theme is more present for us.

Case re-opened!

Comments: We somewhat enjoyed Longships though the wind was at times frustrating. Only played it with 2. Harald does have some interesting ideas (Nice Weather) and this could be one of them.

Our gaming taste has changed over the past 3-4 months, certainly the last 4 weeks, and the novel theme is not enough to dive into this one. We want to focus on the many great games we have - though perhaps future buzz may change our minds.

Attraction: GeekBuzz created hype!

Comments: Quick card game that seems different. Four powers trying to create one state. Recruit leaders, invade locations, strike a deal with them or bring them into your own state - a new way to deal with cards.

There seems to be some production issues - though nothing major.

I am torn on this one - the game seems fresh and interesting. The comments on whether or not the factions are too similar are many both for and against. Is it full of theme or devoid of it?

We enjoy card games, but do we need one more? I think for now we will wait for the new edition and see what happens...

Attraction: Cover art!

Comments: Initially the cover art caught my attention. Judging from the early comments from GenCon this is a game that divides opinions as to whether the buzz is all artwork or if there is a game in it too.

Gameplay seems very simple from the video I saw. I want to dig deeper as early comments from some geekbuddies is more encouraging.

It seems this game has a following and enough decisions to make a game, though still I also see dissenting voices. Given that this game would fill a slot already filled with other games in our collection, I am passing on it.

Comments: I have heard so many good things about Brass, but that game plays from 3 and up. We owned Byzantium and Struggle of Empires without either of them seeing playing time, mainly due to best value at higher player counts.

How can you not like that... hope there is a great game there too.

I have now read through the rules and there are some interesting bits there, like how you can try to get market owners sent to prison and personally scoring points and resources on it.

That said, it seems like just another worker placement game with the only thing going for it being the setting and that is just not enough.

Attraction: Setting in ancient Greece.

Comments: 2 player game set in ancient Greece, people chasing lost temples.

It sounds great, interested to see how it plays and as a classical archaeology student I am looking forward to see how it handles the subject.

Plus, a 2 player game only...

Ok, just realised there was an overview video and not a happy camper following that. It seems very simple and has very little to do with what I thought (or hoped) it would be.

It seems I may have been too hasty in my judgement of this one... so, based on the below comments, I am re-opening it for further investigation.

I am both intrigued by and somewhat lukewarm by the RRT video. The theme does indeed seem to be stronger than anticipated, however, the potential for some long turns, well, turn me off a bit.

Geekbuddies on the Phoenix GCL list find the game ok, but nothing stellar. There is nothing wrong with that, except on a crowded shelf, it tends to get overlooked.

I am going to give this a miss. The game seems interesting but it is competing in a crowded place.

Pros: Setting and 2 player count.
Cons: Simple tile-laying game.

Attraction: THEME!

Comments: 500 BCE and 5 states compete for superiority in the region. Combines dice selection with city management, workers thrown in for good measure and inter-state war.

I have now had a chance to read the rules and don't feel compelled to own the game. The theme is interesting to me as a Roman history buff, but aside from that aspect I find nothing earth-shattering in it.

All the best though.

Pros:
Cons: No information - 2 player goodness?

Attraction: Sci-fi game creating quite the buzz!

Comments: Colonize the moon using dice, cards and worker placement. The buzz generated makes this sound like the must-have game of 2010, but is it truly that great!?

All the hype has sucked me in, including the Dice Tower review, but I am not convinced we will play this a lot - call it a feeling.

Feeling confirmed by the Enders review.

Pros: Sci-fi theme that plays in 1 hour, great comments on 2 player!
Cons: High level of interaction - not usually our cup of tea!

Attraction: Quick-playing card game.

Comments: Fooled at first as I thought it had to do with movie stars, but reading the description had me intrigued. I will look forward to more info and see if it will impress.

Using a mechanism similar to 7 Wonders the game seems light, but not a bad thing as such. One thing does deter me, which is the 2 player version, where you play a 4 player game with 2 virtual players. It just seems to be very cumbersome.

I am not convinced, despite the pretty graphics and the cheap price.

Pros: Quick and easy.
Cons: Cumbersome 2 player variant.

Verdict: thumbsdown - no stars for the 2 player variant.

Attraction: Low player count and theme.

Comments: Fishing seems to be the new hotness. This one is a game of pick-up and deliver, build the best networks, transport the high-value cargo and do it better than your competitors.

Very little information, but given the design is for low player counts, it does look interesting.

Reading a session review/ comment from UK Expo and the games goes right off the list. It seems to be a very light optimization game and nothing that makes me quiver.

Attraction: Novel theme.

Comments: We have enjoyed 2 out of the 3 Stefan Feld games we have played (In the Year of the Dragon and Roma) though we ended up selling both of them.

This game has an interesting theme and a number of interlocking options. Program robots or use them, seems simple, but then the forward planning and the multiple ways to score points (typical Stefan Feld point salad game...)...

I have been watching the RRT video (link below) and I have to admit it seems AP-prone. Off the bat I am leaning towards kicking the game to the curve, but there is still something about it that interests me, the theme mostly I suppose.

Of it goes, as I only seem to ever consider it when I am looking at the games on this list as opposed to other games here that are often at the front of my mind in discussions online and off, or when just contemplating games.

Pros: Theme
Cons: AP-prone

In Archipels, players are Renaissance European Powers competing in the exploration of a carribean archipelago.

How can you not get excited about this???

Now that I have read the rules, I am less enthused. The game looks very interesting and certainly thematic, but is the 2 player game any good and is it not just another worker placement game in a different setting?

I am getting the feeling from comments and geekbuddies that this is a great game - just not so much with just 2 players...

Well, you hold an opinion until you change it or something... My geekbuddy Michael has been raving about this game so when it popped up on Amazon for cheapish I jumped at it.

Pros: Theme.

Attraction: A Stonemaier Games game.

Comments: A first, a Stonemaier game not from Jamey Stegmaier but outside designers. Seems interesting and a great family game. A partnership game with tiles where you interact with the player to your left and right.

Interested in seeing the 2 player version, though likely to include dummy players(s)?

So, ultimately I ended up not backing this one. It competes in a crowded space on our shelves and for now we have no non-gamers to entice.
