Limit 14. Can you do it?

It seems I am always trying to reduce the size of my game collection. I often try to create a list of 10 or 20 games that I would keep if I had to get rid of most of the collection. I usually end up picking abot 60 of them . So I tried a new exercise in list making using a combination of BGG Categories and Mechanics (of games which I like). So I made a list of 12. Why 12? Looking at my collection, which is stored on an average sized bookcase, it appeared that just about any 12 games would fit in 1 section of the bookcase. The list is now 14(not 12) because I can't proof read and used #'s 6 and 7 2x on my list(It has now been fixed). My list is below.
This Geeklist is a little brain game for those with good sized game collections or those who play a lot of games.
Please add your own lists using the following criteria:
1. Look at your collection and choose 1 game from the following combination of categories and mechanics that you would want to keep if all the other games had to go away
Abstract Srategy Game Area Control Game Bidding Game Bluffing Game Co- operative Game Deduction Game Dice Game Free Choice (Any game) Hand Management Racing Game Solo Game War Game Worker Placement 2 Player Game
2. Each game must have the category or mechanic listed on it's BGG page 3. Expansions count as part of the base game if they fit in 1 of the game boxes they came in. 4. The Solo Game category must have 1-or more players listed for #of players 5. 2 Player game must have 2-2 for # of players 6. The Free Choice category is open to any game. It can repeat a category or mechanic on the list, or any other not listed. 7. Please try to stick with the given categories and mechanics, otherwise it's just a "These are my favorite 12 games list"
Thanks for participating

Abstract Srategy Game: Ingenious (Travel Edition) - a Knizia classic and my wife loves it'
Area Control Game: Tikal - recently acquired but destined to become a favourite. Bidding Game: Ra - Knizia's (and anyone's) best auction game (though Taj Mahal is close behind). Bluffing Game: Palastgefluster - not sure it's really a bluffing game, but it is listed as such and it's a great little card game. Co- operative Game: Die Kutschfahrt zur Teufelsburg - another brilliant but tiny card game in which you have to figure out who is on your team. Deduction Game: Mr Jack - you could question whether this is really a deduction game, but either way it's great. Dice Game: Risk Express - simple as they come, but tons of fun. Free Choice (Any game): Tigris & Euphrates - my favourite board game, defies categorisation. Hand Management: Glory to Rome - the psychedelic version of Race for the Galaxy. Racing Game: Winner's Circle - Knizia again! More of a betting game, but a blast either way. Solo Game: Race for the Galaxy (+ The Gathering Storm) - I've only played it solo once and don't intend to do so again, but it fills the slot nicely. War Game: don't own any, what a Euro-wimp I am. Worker Placement: Agricola - the only choice I'm unhappy about. I don't like worker placement, and I'm bored of Agricola. The only WP game I love is Age of Empires III, but a friend owns it so I don't need to. 2 Player Game: Battle Line - simple rules but meaty gameplay, a classic Knizia trait.
This was an interesting exercise. I managed to get in most of my favourites, with only Power Grid and Chicago Express missing from my 9s. Besides Agricola, there's nothing I'd regret keeping. Six Knizias! I'd have really liked a Route/network Building category to be added.

Good idea for a Geeklist!
1. Abstract Srategy Game - Chess 2. Area Control Game - 1960: Making of a President 3. Bidding Game - Power Grid 4. Bluffing Game - Game of Thrones 5. Co- operative Game - Last Night on Earth: The Zombie Game 6. Deduction Game - Battle Star Galactica 7 Dice Game - Perudo 8. Free Choice (Any game) - Armchair Cricket 9. Hand Management - Android 10. Racing Game - Robo Rally 11. Solo Game - Arkham Horror 12. War Game - War of the Ring 13. Worker Placement - Agricola 14. 2 Player Game - Bloodbowl: Living Rulebook
I took a slightly different tack and added in a couple of games that made my list, but which I don't currently own. I figure that if I was cutting down my collection to 14, then I would have enough funds from getting rid of 100+ games to pick them up!

I like the idea for this list but I think you should have included a couple more categories (e.g., card game, party game). I say this not because "I want more games to keep!" but because your current list doesn't allow popular games such as Time's Up!, Traders of Genoa or even Puerto Rico. I realize any of these could be put in the "any game" category on your list, but I really feel the list should have at least one mechanic or category that captures at least the 2nd most popular game on the site without resorting to the wildcard option. Regardless, here is my list using the OP's ruleset:
Abstract Strategy - Chess Area Control - Carcassonne Bidding - Vegas Showdown Bluffing - Citadels Co-Op - Time's Up (I know this is not officially a co-op game but you are playing as a team, so I think it fits the definition) if not, then I would leave this one blank. Deduction - Scotland Yard Dice - Illuminati Pick ANY - Puerto Rico Hand Management - Acquire Racing - Daytona 500 Solo - NONE (I play games to play them with other people) War - Dune Worker Placement - Kingsburg 2-Player - Lost Cities

After some thought here we go:
Abstract Srategy Game: Hive Area Control Game: Samurai Bidding Game: Power Grid Bluffing Game: Heimlich & Co. Co- operative Game: Pandemic Deduction Game: Inkognito Dice Game: Can't Stop Free Choice (Any game): Silberzwerg Hand Management: Tigris and Euphretes Racing Game: Formula D Solo Game: Zombie in my pocket War Game: Shogun Worker Placement: Kingsburg 2 Player Game: Mr. Jack
Deciding between Kingsburg and Stone Age would be really tough as far as worker placement games go.

Hmmm, the most important 14 games in my collection do not fit these categories, so this one is real tough and a little cheaty...
1. Abstract Srategy Game - Steam (this one feels totally abstract to me, so I'll call it an abstract) 2. Area Control Game - Domaine (an enclosure game which is a type of area control) 3. Bidding Game - Siena 4. Bluffing Game - Cleopatra and the Society of Architects (man, you're even bluffing with yourself when the corruption starts working its power over you...) 5. Co- operative Game - Lord of the Rings 6. Deduction Game - Caylus (you have to try and deduce your opponent's strategy..) 7. Dice Game - Helden in der Unterwelt (a pick up and deliver fantasy game that uses dice.) 8. Free Choice (Any game) - Yspahan 9. Hand Management - San Juan (more properly a variable role selection game, but you also have to manage your hand...) 10. Racing Game - Gloria Mundi (under-rated race game with resource management as an added complexity) 11. Solo Game - Antiquity (okay, this is not a solo game, but since everyone is afraid to play it, I mostly just play against myself playing all the opponents' parts... so sad...) 12. War Game - Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization (well, you CAN wage wars in this game, though it's really a civ game...) 13. Worker Placement - A Castle for All Seasons 14. 2 Player Game - Backgammon
These are the real categories for me...
1. A Castle for All Seasons - simultaneous role selection 2. Caylus - worker placement/real estate development 3. Cleopatra and the Society of Architects - corruption mechanic/heavy chrome 4. Domaine - abstract area enclosure 5. Gloria Mundi - racing with resource management 6. Helden in der Unterwelt - fantasy/role playing 7. Lord of the Rings - cooperative 8. Roll Through the Ages: The Bronze Age - civ meets yahtzee dice game 9. San Juan - card game/variable role selection 10. Siena - social climbing/vastly under-rated 11. Steam - THE train game 12. Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization - civilization 13. Ticket to Ride: Europe - network building/family fare 14. Yspahan - area control/game with most interesting use of dice
The categories or selections might have to be added or changed after Omega Centauri (civ-ish sci fi) and Havana (card game/simultaneous role selection) get published, or after I get the chance to play Endeavor (expansionism category), or as I sit here thinking longingly of Antiquity (exploitation of the land resulting in death and pollution category) and Vinci (area control/slavery in games issue), oh and Railroad Tycoon (The OTHER train game)... and my spouse would sure miss Backgammon (old school category)...

I guess I suffer from having too many good games - I think I probably need 24 categories to keep me very very fat and happy in games...

This was a really helpful geeklist for me,even though I don't even own enough games to properly participate. Instead, I used this list to figure out which of the games I am interested in I should buy first so as not to overlap in categories too much.
First, I will attempt to fit my meager game collection into this list:
Abstract Srategy Game Quoridor Area Control Game Carcasonne: Hunters and Gatherers Bidding Game Lost Cities Bluffing Game B.S. (Normal deck of cards) Co- operative Game None Deduction Game Battle Line Dice Game Street Soccer Free Choice (Any game) Space Hulk Hand Management Magic: The Gathering Racing Game Survive! Last one to the boat gets eaten by a sea monster! Solo Game Go (I usually end up playing myself or replaying old games bc no one wants to play) War Game Wiz War (Title explicitly states this is a war game.) Worker Placement None 2 Player Space Hulk (Even newbies got bit by the bug.)
TO BUY:
Abstract Srategy Game Hive Area Control Game Chaos in the Old World Bidding Game For Sale Bluffing Game Bang!: the Bullet. Co- operative Game Pandemic Deduction Game Mr. Jack Dice Game Settlers of Catan Free Choice (Any game) LOTR: Confrontation Hand Management Glory to Rome Racing Game Ticket to Ride Solo Game Dungeon Twister 2 War Game Twilight Struggle Worker Placement Agricola 2 Player Game Blood Bowl
Thanks geeks!

Abstract Srategy Game--Hey, That's My Fish!
Area Control Game--Small World Bidding Game--Power Grid Bluffing Game--Liar's Dice Co- operative Game--Hokm Deduction Game--Werewolf Dice Game--Can't Stop Free Choice (Any game)--Bohnanza Hand Management--Hearts Racing Game--PitchCar Mini Solo Game--Race for the Galaxy War Game--Memoir '44 Worker Placement--Puerto Rico 2 Player Game--Dominion
So I cheated. I don't own some of them. But I'd pick those ones. And does PR count as worker placement? Does RftG count as solo? (because that's most of the way I play it. My family dislikes that game.)
And I know I have several traditional card games. I'd want all of those. I would need several decks of cards to survive for the rest of my life. And those would be the games I'd play.

1. Abstract Strategy = Hive.
2. Area Control = Carcassonne + Inns & Caths, Traders & Builders, River II, Abbey & Mayor, and Cult, Siege & Creativity. 3. Bidding = O Zoo Le Mio. 4. Bluffing = Chrononauts I suppose. Even though I haven't gotten around to playing it, I don't feel enamoured by my other games that fit. 5. Co- operative = Scotland Yard, though I'd probably buy Pandemic and keep that instead. 6. Deduction = Identity Crisis - fills the party void too. 7. Dice = Killer Bunnies and the Quest for the Magic Carrot, with all the expansions crammed in (I might need to reinforce the box). 8. Free Choice (Any) = Originally I chose Pick and Pack, but thinking about it I technically brought it for my fiancee, so I'll have Spinergy. 9. Hand Management = Ticket to Ride, and would try and cram in Nordic Countries and Switzerland if possible. 10. Racing = Ice Flow. 11. Solo = Ingenious. 12. War = Perikles, though I'd probably replace it with one of the Wings of War games. 13. Worker Placement = Don't have any, and there doesn't seem to be many games in this category. Oh well, this could give me an excuse to go out and buy Agricola or Stone Age. Hmm... 14. Two-Player = Carcassone the Castle.

This is a hard thing to do for me. I'm missing quite a couple of categories I like:
Economic game (my favorite category!) Route/network building game (another favorite!) Building/tile placement game Dexterity game
But I'll try anyway.
Abstract Strategy Game - Yinsh Area Control Game - Revolution: the dutch revolt Bidding Game - Funkenschlag (Power Grid) Bluffing Game - Dune Co- operative Game - Red November Deduction Game - Scripts & Scribes Dice Game - Tinners Trail (it has dice rolling, and my list needs more than one Wallace!) Free Choice (Any game) - Through the Ages (doesn't fit any of the given categories) Hand Management - Brass Racing Game - Pitch Car Solo Game - Agricola War Game - Nexus Ops is the only game besides Battlelore in this category I managed to play a lot (more than 10 times), but I like games like Friedrich/Hannibal/Twilight Struggle better) Worker Placement - not my favorite category. But Dungeon Lords fits nicely. 2 Player Game - 2 de Mayo
Amongst other favorites I'd be missing the rest of my Martin Wallace, Splotter and Vlaada Chvatil collection too much to be a happy game camper.

Methinks my collection is too small for this list!
1. Abstract Srategy Game: meh. n/a (Neuland is probably about as close as I can get.) 2. Area Control Game: Small World (though Vinci is on its way and likely to steal that spot) 3. Bidding Game: n/a (though I hope the new improved Goa will take this place one day) 4. Bluffing Game: n/a 5. Co- operative Game: Red November (no competition, only one I've got) 6. Deduction Game: n/a (though Mr. Jack is calling to me) 7 Dice Game: Settlers of Catan seriously, Yspahan (and seriously, if someone's got a good trade for me for Settlers + 5-6 player expansion + event deck, all barely used, let me know) 8. Free Choice (Any game): Caylus Magna Carta 9. Hand Management: Bohnanza (the kids would be heartbroken if I let this one go) 10. Racing Game: RoboRally 11. Solo Game: Busen Memo (It's the closest to the only solo 'game' I play (That's 'trying to remember things', you naughty git!), and it's about time it showed up on this list. No, I don't have it.) 12. War Game: BattleLore 13. Worker Placement: Agricola 14. 2 Player Game: Jambo
