No doubt those of you who have supported Games Workshop in the past by creating files for use with their games will have noticed they are all being deleted from BGG at the behest of their lawyers.

So here's a little paeon to the games that I spent many hours creating rules summaries and reference sheets for that are no longer available here. They're still at my personal site, but I don't imagine they'll be there for long.

No doubt they'll be more items on this list before long.

If you are interested in my opinion of this kind of activity, check out the latest entry on my blog at www.headlesshollow.com.

Yep, my rules summary for this one must have been affecting the GW bottom line ...

Indeed it has been affecting their bottom line!
Their lawyers/IP protection subcontractor just got more billable hours!

One of the problems with GW being a publicly traded company with a board full of non-understanders of the hobby market means that they feel obliged to jump on IP protection bandwagons with people who actually have a legitimate claim to be losing money from IP theft--MPAA, RIAA, etc. And we all know how sane they act...

What's especially boggling (and leaves me sure that it's a contractor out for more hours/fulfilling a global mandate to 'protect our IP,' as opposed to being done in-house) is that GW has been out of boardgames for AGES, and has proved that they're not interested in getting back into it, even resorting to licensing their best stuff to FF.

...go figure.

Indeed, in around 2000, we started to see the effects of a policy shift. The cartoony, family-fied imagery was dying away and being replaced with the darker, gritter imagery GW rose to fame with. The drift towards recruiting younger kids was reversed, and they moved back to the secondary-school age and above crowd, with more emphasis on the "veterans".

While at the same time giving the backhand to the veterans who don't "upgrade" every time. WOTC has had a simmilar attitude over the years. Though less overt than GW most of the time.

As a veteram, while I can se *an* argument for not changing the rules, I don't see a new MRB every four years and a new army book every six (ish) years, accompanied by a handful of minis to round things out, as being a major expense (around £1.25 a month to keep current) for my hobby.

Plus you don't *have* to upgrade. You could happily go and play earlier editions of you wanted. The only reaso to keep current is if you want to.

Neither company has treated its vetran players overwell in one way or another over the years and both from the exec level have had pretty dim views of vetran players from point to point. They just go about it diffrently.

The real jab comes mostly only if you do the Tournament play nigh exclusively, or the local group is fanatical about it. Or the local GW shop is enforcing company rule on whats allowed. Big factors depending on ones locale or outlook. Or minor factors for the same.

Been to two GW shops in wildly diffrent locales and ran into the same problem of enforcement of this very thing. Others I've talked with have had it either none at all, or to lesser degrees. And thats just in the US shops.

Back on topic:
We'll see more of these purges here and there no matter. And theres likely many we will just never know of.

The PC game is a great way to learn the game, since you can play against an easy AI controlled opponent just to get the feel of the game down. The online on the other hand is shake

Did they SELL the rights, or license them. Just like most game designers, they probably retained the copyrights and licensed their use. That way if the copyright is abandoned (OOP), they can clawback the copyright and reprint themselves or re-license.

Suffice to say:

They don't leave it up to FFG, they do it themselves.

Without FFG's knowledge.

So yea.... nothing changes with it being FFG's games, GW still acts like a bull in a china shop.

Their treatment of Warhammer Quest is the single stupidest thing Games Workshop has done throughout their history.

They promised expansions for many areas of the world - two were released. Check out how much they go for on Troll & Toad or EvilBay right now..

In their small minds, GW thought it was just a box set and wouldn't sell their minis according to their crack-cocaine business model.

How wrong they were! If I collected one of their armies, I would probably have bought a few hundred dollars worth of their miniatures by now. But NO, I had to get interested in Warhammer Quest! I picked up the game right near the end of its production life, and since then have collected 10,000+ points worth of Undead miniatures (now divvied into Vampire Counts & Tomb Kings), a huge Orc & Goblin army, and huge selection of Skaven, Dark Elf, and Chaos miniatures of every stripe. Plus I have tons of Mordheim miniatures because they make great adventurers.

So yeah, if they kept WHQ on the market I think they would've been able to have their crack and smoke it too. Stupid, and frustrating.

I have contributed to the excellent Warhammer Quest Museum wquest.free.fr and this stuff is not new. The owner of that site loves GW and their lawyers scared him into taking it down for a while even as GW game designers were giving the thumbs up. In the end, it is back up with ONLY custom works. Any actual rules or artwork cannot be allowed online.

Finally, if you want a good laugh, check out the Avatars of War website to see what the lawyers should REALLY be worried about - miniatures from a competitive company that clearly are meant to be used with their IPs. But since you cannot easily copyright the image of a dwarf with a mohawk they are going after their fans. Disgusting.

The Reason behind WHQ's demise, at least according to Fanatic Games is the fact that the Board sections can't be done in house, so the apparently make a loss. Make of that what you will.

Its not so much GW takes a loss as the fact GW doesnt want anything done outside of their factories if its their sole project. The screwups with the new Space Hulk tiles may have reinforced that view since those were outsourced to a seperate company according to note.

Might also explain why they dont do board games anymore and why they keep liscensing games off to FFG.

What were the Screw ups with the Space Hulk tiles?

And yeah I agree about the whole encouraging you to buy more Minis bit. And if You do play WFB as well well once you have all those orcs/goblins/skaven/beastmen/undead griblies for WHQ you may as well buy some Character, war machine and monster minis and field yet another army (yeah like we wargamers need an excuse).

But yeah the bean counters who've taken control of the company don't get that and there is no way to prove that the box of 10 orcs you bought was for WHQ and not WFB...

As for the Lawyers Every now and then GW gets a bunch of rabid ones fresh out of law schools soon enough they will see how pointless it all is and settle down or get distracted suing real crooks ripping off GWs IP.

On the contrary, your rules summary apparently makes Games Workshop uncomfortable because it looks ever so much more professionally rendered and realized than they themselves might otherwise have come up with.

And I do wholeheartedly agree with ya that the sad thing is, if some of these games had been supported by the company instead of being abandoned, half-heartedly supported or merely left to wither on the vine, they would not only have made money out of them but also have nurtured ongoing perennial sales of them as well.

Games Workshop's over-the-top knee-jerk over-reactions remind me of somebody who suddenly upends the board right in the middle of a game, sending game pieces flying all over the place, and then walks off in a huff simply because he himself didn't create the player aids and scenarios for it. angry

Ugh. Would there even have been as much hype and interest in buying the 3rd edition if people hadn't been able to spend the last twenty years oooohing and aaaaahing over how cool the game looked and played or poring over myriad fan created pics and files online? That sort of stuff went a long way towards priming 3rd edition's customer base. How does GW expect to keep people interested in or hyped up for future re-releases of invisible games?

Sorry - I agree with Universal Head. This is just ammunition for Games Workshop, and will confirm to them that they have the high moral (and legal) ground ...

Still got the rules (if anyone wants) and was discussing last night giving it a lash with some moded up matchbox cars...

Also their ethic is pretty good. If anything buying more stuff off them might encourage the rest of GW to be Nicer...

No they changed the mechanics. Same game, just a new edition. Why are you defending FF's part in this. This purge coincides with GW selling the rights to reprint and update their back catalog. Am I the only one who puts 2 and 2 together?

I'm totally onboard with this-is-a-really-stupid-move-by-gw, but I assume in this and some of the other situations mentioned above that they just fired a legal shotgun at the situation and didn't concern themselves with one or the other game. I would go further by saying that most lawyers suck, but that would be mean.

Dammit. I spent ages trying to get up and running with this (I even got the rules book and a copy of Tyranid Attack on eBay) and nobody else seems to have any resources for it. As for offical GW support it just died without a trace after all of to articles in White Dwarf.

Why can't they:
a) Support their games
b) Stop interfering with people who are trying to support their games when they drop the ball.

Edit:
I just checked and my contents list is still up so at least that is something.

Games like this one make no sense in this purge. must be the scattershot effect mentioned above.

At least with Horus Heresy, Doom of the Eldar, Battle for Armageddon, Chaos Marauders and Chainsaw warrior you can trace it back to their deal FFG but as it doesn't include Any game with minis like this, spacehulk, WHQ and Blood Bowl why are they included. In fact having the rules and board for this circulating would help sell more 'Nids and Marines...

Now my family is fearful, and we're sleeping in the basement, worried that the Games Workshops thugs are going to do a drive-by.

Oh wait. Lawyers don't do that kinda thing. Their form of intimidation is far scarier...

I had been kinda considering Prophecy as a game to acquire, but then I played it a few months ago and decided it wasn't enough different than Talisman to bother getting into, considering I have a lot of the original Talisman expansions.

But now, NOW, I'm going to get Prophecy one of these days, and never look back...

Maybe Vlaada Chvátil (designer of Prophecy) should write a bit long gushy thank you letter to GW! LOL

Just checked, and I think the two files you still see (so far anyways) are older things I put together, that were then included in a "master list" of all the cards...

I could be wrong on this one, but weren't there pictures (maybe even files) for a nice fan made copy of this game? I kind of remember it because it was actually one that I thought was really well done and saw it in recent weeks. I might be confusing it with some other game though... either way, I don't have a way to check it... it'll be interesting to see if GW requests the removal of the 5 year old's fan made cards too

What's interesting about that is that I don't think Games Workshop owns the rights to this game. It appears Wham does, because there's supposed to be a new edition published by Z-Man Games, I believe.

In 1983, I signed a contract with West End Games and all rights have long since reverted to me.

Yes send me stuff to post about MY game.

Meanwhile I quite agree that a game company is a fool to suppress fan support. Absolutely every time I play a new game, I go to the Geek (before playing if possible) for player aids, FAQs, rule corrections, and anything else of interest. The Geek is a board gamer's essential tool.

Thanks for the info, Tom!

This really illustrates the problem with GW's actions. Here they forced the removal of material based on non-existent rights to the underlying material. Indeed, there's every reason to believe that material that you. yourself, posted about the game could have been removed, as I don't see any indication that anyone involved ever checked to see who actually owned the rights!

I had this game back in the day, but I have no idea where it is now, possibly the attic. I remember it being great fun, but quite complex for the level of gamer I was then. It was the first game I played with Catan-style hexes I think. Now I've seen this I'll have to have a good search for it. Ahhh nostalgia, there's noting like it !!

I lost the new combat cards I made for DungeonQuest. I did several player aids so expect the others to disappear soon.

The reason I made them was my copy's cards were in bad shape. So thought others would enjoy having new cards too to replace worn copies.

Yes GW, you have saved the world as we know it. I'm sure those combat cards were going to kill a puppy or club a seal. yuk

This is the only GW game I currently own and have no interest in supporting them from now on. I do own the FFG edition of Talisman which now feels abit dirty...

And so that copy of Talisman should feel dirty, as the cash FFG made from that is what prompted them to snap up the rest of GWs back catalog, something which myself and a few other suspect led to this purge...

FFG is its own breed of problematic at times. They have pulled a few major screw-ups in the last year or two and really dont need GWs help for that. They did just fine on their own. But they certainly aren't part of the file purge nore GWs ongoing war on fan sites. That is a part of GWs treatment of fans that goes back at least a decade possibly a decade and a half.

You 'know for a fact'? Care to back that up? Not having a go but if I had a dollar for everyone online who 'Knew for a fact' I'd be a rich man.

And no I'm not disagreeing that GW's legal teams can be extra retarded at times. I've been a Warhammer and 40K player since 1994. I'm just annoyed that everyone seems to be giving FFG a free pass.

I suspect that what really happened was something in the middle. Maybe FFG pointed out that a lot of the stuff that GW was selling them the rights to was available online for free and that someone, i.e. the rights holders i.e. GW should do something about that if FFG was going to pny up good money. And of course GW's legal team responded in their usual over the top insane way.

If you have any inside information please clarify.

As for Dark Heresy, the work on that has been good although they are mostly just using the same freelancers that Black Industries were using via Green Ronnin.

But I'd have rather WFRP stayed in 'Limbo' than be violated into this dirty abomination crossbred with a boardgame and an MMORPG...

Sorry, I can't reveal my source for several reasons; you'll have to take my word for it (or don't, I care not). It is possible FFG mentioned it first, granted. However the fact remains that FFG don't police copyright for their non-GW games when it comes to summaries etc.

As for the new WFRP, I happen to like it, and I've been playing since the original book came out. It seems a shame that you'd rather have no WFRP at all for new players than have a game that doesn't fit with your personal opinion of what WFRP should be. In any case, it's a RPG; use 1st, 2nd or 3rd edition, whatever you prefer - there's plenty of source material available.

The fact is FFG had nothing to gain from it and they have all of zero say in GWs policies and would further damage their rep at the time if they had. GW makes the rules of this, not the other way around.

If you'd bothered to check you'd see the sweep was across the board and hit games from other companies that GW had no business "policing" for them. but more importantly the sweep was done by the BGG, not GW. GW asked for a handfull of items pertaining to their games be removed. Then they requested all infringing files be removed from anything of theirs and left the BGG virtually no time at all to do other than a massive sweep of everything.

FFG had zero to do with this. If the two initial files I know of that were part of the start of this mess, both were purely GW properties and from comments I can deduce the other two were too.

If you want to grind an axe against FFG. By all means please do. They more than deserve it. But This purge was not one of FFGs antics.

If you looked at other game companies of the time. It seemed inevitible.
TSR was starting its fall. White Wolf was rotting from within, Palladium wouldnt hit full swing crazy till the 90s. WOTC didnt hit the scene till the mid 90s but it took them a mere 5 or so years to go off the deep end too, then recover, then do it again.

Others mercifully folded before they could go insane. (Dont have any info on FASA and its attitude back then to fans.)

Aw!

I just found this game the other day, saw the cool files and thought I'd get them later. (._.)

Bad timing. I think it's ok for them to protect their copyrights and such, but files were pulled that didn't and that is just wrong. If people want to take the time to make a lost-in-the-toilet version of their game, then what's the harm?

Didn't realize this whole purge was in the works. Hoping that it leads to some releases at least. I know that I've been waiting for Necromunda terrain forever. Lost Patrol looks great and I'd like to see it in the (registered/copywrited) flesh.

EDIT: Killed the auto-smilie maker that messed with my Japanese-groove facey

I made an Excel Army List program for the Tau army. And I made it way sooner than I uploaded it here.

It was thrashed today surprise

I understand the reasoning here, as the program uses the Values and Names from the Tau Codex (though they stay hidden from view of the general populace).

But anyway, this is crap...

Oh no worries you can find a MUCH better game here AT-43. These guys seem to be really nice to work with and support a free army creator. Also the game is about 100 times better to play. And if you sell those crappy 40K minis before the market is flooded you can get some AT-43 armies real cheap in FFG's Holiday Sale.

http://store.fantasyflightgames.com/client/client_pages/sale...

Do yourself a favor and dump GWs mini selling machine.

Rackham is located in France. They are mainly a European company. FFG was selling them to North America and as you can see by the prices that they had they were dumping their stock because Rackham Entertainment is now the distributor of all Rackham games. They dumped the Metal Minis to some French Company now and are just doing AT-43 and Confrontation. AT-43 is very easy to learn and play. Confrontation adds some different types of game play but is still very close.

http://www.rackham-store.com/boutique/index.cfm is the online store for Rackham Prices are in Euros (which makes ordering from them VERY expensive in the US so we need to seek other online resellers like the FFG sale)

Biggest problem with Rackham is the very slow releases and updates. If you go to the AT-43 home page you will see the last update was November 7th. There has been a new army released since then and there is nothing on the site for it. They are still trying to get things worked out internally.

Still the game is 100x better then 40K and the minis come pre-painted (for those of us that want nice looking minis and don't have the time or the talent to paint a whole army) The way they are sold is exceptional. You buy a unit box and you get a whole unit that is ready to play. You by an attachment box and you get the special minis for the unit box. No guess work. Also most of the large minis come with terrain pieces. They are releasing 2000 point army boxes for around 70 dollars (US) and are available online for around 55 dollars (US). They also come with a tape measure, templates and dice and terrain. Plus all the minis and cards and accessories you would need.

There is a ABSOLUTELY Stunning FREE army creator program that not only updates daily (if you want) the army lists but also has the missions and a mission creator program built in and access to user created missions via download from the web and prints in standardized formats. Oh and the army creator is isn't going to be C&D'd anytime soon because Rackham isn't a group of a$$holes that don't care about the player base and only see dollar signs.

The entrys of the games here at BGG fall under an exeption to copyright called Fair Use. This is reserved for, among other things, review, comments & critisism. As long as BGG stay within this GW has no right to demand them removed.

Some of the work that is adressed may actually be original work and therefore not subject to copyright, rather the author of the new work actually ownes the copyright. GW might claim that it is derivative work but there need to be a substantial amount of the original in the new work for it to be derivative.

However, most fanbased work use the logos and graphics of the games they are made for and this is a trademark and might be a copyright issue.

WTF? Seriously, they're doing this? What is their friggin' problem? Do they really dislike their customers this much?

Sorry to see your fine work go away.

When I was a little boymeeple I loved everything GW put out. When I think back I loved it because it was, pretty much, the only tabletop gaming you could get your hands on in Denmark at that time. There was alot of other stuff but being a easily impressed junior, GW was better at pushing they stuff to kids by big displays, aggressive marketing and White Dwarf.

I yuk when thinking about how much money my parents gave me to spend on those products.

Im grateful of getting into 40k and Necromunda, but experiencing the way they fack with their loyal following mixed with backing of cut-throat capitalists shareholders who hold no regard of gamers, is simply heartbreaking!

Now[geekurl= http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/239/view/news/read/1...]GW is suing WAR MMO fan site[/geekurl]

Im officially never buying stuff from GW again or supporting them in any way!

I was in a mall last summer with a Games Workshop. I walked in. The man in black asked what I needed. I asked him where the boardgames were . He gave me this "yea, right" look like he'd been through this before. That was an entertaining way to spend a minute.

Simply look at their website nowadays (although I must admit it has been years since I was on myself). They removed all of their fluff and articles that were worth reading and simply left the buying part of the website. This infuriated me because it seemed so capitalistic. I would guess that this change happened around the same time as this list started, so I wonder if they were related.

I absolutely cannot stand GW anymore and the hundreds (possibly thousands) of dollars of merchandise that sits in my hobby room actually makes me angry to look at it. (OK, not hulk angry - more a disappointed concern over my poor purchases.)

Fortunately, age and experience have taught me to avoid GW and the same mistake will not be made again.

Actually, the articles are still there. their location is less than obvious, but they are still there.
