I have played a couple of Lloyd's games and wrote a review for one of them.

I found Lloyd most helpful when asking questions about his games.

And yes, he is prolific.

Does he ever visit BGG? When I first started into board gaming, he was one of the designers that seemed to have established "name brand recognition", so I tended to look for his games first when choosing one.

I'd heard quite a few things about him, some good and some the other, but have always been curious if he ever posts on BGG or has widespread interaction with the community.

Either way, great list

Short answer: no.

Long answer coming. I recently read an interview with him here, see question 3. A rough translation:

Quote:
How important is the internet for you to obtain information?

The Internet for information gathering has little meaning to me. I am old-fashioned in this respect. I love my books and enjoy the atmosphere of the libraries. Of course it's nice, flight tickets and shares with easy reach from the screen, but creative thematic studies of new games take place in a different environment, not in front of the screen.

Email is of course important, because it has become a modern communication standard. Everyone could always be reached. But this has not just advantages. In previous times people sent documents by mail. It took a few days, we had a couple of days to process and then everything went back by mail. Today I am getting an email with all the graphics for a new game and note that everything goes to print in the afternoon - in case I had suggestions. This creates unnecessary and unproductive urgency, and poses a challenge to the creative and artistic process.

Good games can not be developed during two calls or two emails. I need leisure time and peace to close my eyes and look into other worlds. It is important to resist the tyranny of short-term emergency - for more than 20 new games launched every year is not easy. I defend my time for long-term development work as best as I can - honestly, it has everything to do with internal discipline.

I have two jobs, one is filled with electronic media for the administrative tasks, the other is empty, and opens the doors to new worlds, game systems and materials. If I'm here, I'm not there, and vice versa. I also have a third "job", outdoor long walks between Windsor and Ascot, where I am uninterrupted and in peace to my heart with me talking and gesturing. The other hikers think I'm crazy ...

I think Berg's games are a bit of a mixed bag. The good Berg games (like Terrible Swift Sword and SPQR) are some of the best wargames ever done. However, he has had an equal number of dogs as well (like Campaign for North Africa and Nero). For that reason, I will almost always hold off on buying a Berg game until I've read some reviews first.

Culture is leisure, culture is spare time, including literature, theater etc., a complete separation from the usual life. It is a process of stepping down. And what do you find there? You find life again, but another life where the order has been created by you, and which has a sense. It does not bring anything material with it. All playful forms, like philosophy or matemathics, have certain characteristics, they have order, they have rhythm."

Berg did write it and I completely agree with him. Chadwick is a genius who often gets overlooked when discussing influential game designers. In the "golden age of wargaming" (the late 70's), Chadwick and GDW were among the best.

To me, there is a sameness to Bomba's designs - especially his east front stuff. That isn't necessarily a bad thing since it is pretty easy to go from one of his designs to another without having to read a lot of new rules.

Fun quote:
"There are many things that can be simulated in a game and no game that I am aware of handles all of the details of conflict at the same level of detail in a user entertaining manner. A good simulation is one that picks out the key variables with easy to implement systems that let the player(s) manipulate them within an historical context. Additionally, the historical outcome and decisions should in some manner be within the set of game outcomes. In the end all simulations are wrong, but some are useful and hopefully entertaining."
